Fifth viewing of Bergman's masterpiece for me. I wrote something lengthy on Letterboxd, but suffice it to say that each repeat viewing of the film makes me see the Bishop as less and less of an outright evil character and more of a sad, lonely old man. I also forgot how prominent Hamlet features in the film with a distinct parallel to Halmet's father and the ghost of Alexander's own father. Got to love those haunting shots of his father roaming.

As for the first episode of Quicksand, it is not really enough to make me interested in checking out the rest of the miniseries. The episode seems to point towards her being innocent of the crime and we are treated to a lot of flashbacks to try to establish her relationship to the victims, but none of these flashbacks (lots of yacht-riding) are particularly compelling and at this stage I am not really interested if she did or did not kill them and/or why.

Bergman's least favourite of his films, this thriller is from far removed from his famous meditative work, but stylistically it has a lot of interest. Erik Nordgren's score is atmospheric and Gunnar Fischer's cinematography is exquisite with the influence of American noir heavily felt in the high contrast compositions and moody shots of characters only partially illuminated by window blinds. Too bad about the messy plot and lifeless characters though.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

FTV:13:The Monitor (2011) (Norway) 9

Image

For what is currently the last film he has made, writer/director Pal Sletaune reunites with cinematographer John Andreas Andersen, and builds upon the visual stylisation they had started in Next Door (2005-also reviewed.) Keeping Anna and Anders behind closed doors, Sletaune and Anderson house the duo in a claustrophobic, nerve- shredding Thriller atmosphere, pulled up in long,cornered-off takes pushing Anna and Anders sanity to the corner of the room. When allowing a guest in, Sletaune monitors them increasing the anxiety on Anna and the viewer, via a delicate framing of each person crossing Anna's personal space in up-tight close-shots.

Continuing on the unsettling ambiguous turn taken with the Next Door (2005),the screenplay by Sletaune grips the fragile mental state of Anna and Anders by closing them in with conversations on what horrors they have tried to escape from by moving to the flat. Whilst the coda has a odd up-beat note, Sletaune twists it into a tragic note, thanks to the screams Anna picks up on her baby monitor, striking at the mixed signals Anna sends out on what is reality. Spending most of the film with just one other person, Vetle Qvenild Werring gives a terrific turn as Anders, whose bratty side Werring cuts down to fear over his mum sinking deeper into the flat. After her Millennium trilogy co-star Michael Nyqvist had worked with Sletaune on Next Door, Noomi Rapace locks the door and gives a nail-biting performance as Anna, whose bruised mental state Rapace casts across her face with a on-edge fear over losing everything, pinned by Rapace with a curiosity for Anna to learn what the sounds are coming from the monitor.

While a 'return home' framing device does not add a lot to the story here, this becomes quite compelling as the flashbacks begin and we see the tension between father and son. Holger Löwenadler is very effective as the father who mocks and scorns his son but who at same time is coping with the fact that he is slowly going blind. All of the gradual blindness and father/son dynamics are a lot more interesting than the eventual love triangle though.

This Swedish documentary is propelled by a compelling thesis and the film is very intriguing at first as it goes into Hitler's own failures as a painter, his love of Wagner's music and his reluctance to destroy Greece for the significance of its ancient architecture. As the film wears on though, it becomes a far more conventional Nazism documentary. The near monotone narration - at least in the available English language version - does not help either.

While the languid pacing and limited jump scares distinguish this from the average Hollywood horror film, the basic tale is quite familiar and the whole idea of a girl turning into a werewolf to mirror puberty and sexual maturation has been done better elsewhere before. There are certainly several effective moments though, from her near transformation in a bathroom before interrupted by a knock, to hair suddenly sprouting on her back.

This behind-the-scenes Dogville documentary takes its title from the fact that Lars had a video confession booth installed on the set to allow his actors to vent about their frustrations while making the film. While the video confessions only form a small part of the documentary, this is still interesting with an intimate look at Lars von Trier himself and all his insecurities and telling his actors not to look through the imaginary walls of the set and so on.

FTV:15:Thale (2012) (Norway.) 6.

Image

Placing the telling of this tale in a isolated setting mostly with just three people, writer/cinematographer/ director Aleksander Nordaas (who filmed all the interior scenes in his basement) brushes away the chance to lay the foundation for a enchanting atmosphere, by having Leo vomit all over the opening credits. Instead of going into Elvis’s battle with cancer through the dialogue or keeping it to one vomiting scene which fully captures the horrific agony , Nordaas instead tries to express it visually, via Elvis and Leo regularly vomiting, which becomes a barrier to the character drama. Playing snippets of old tapes from the main setting, Nordaas records a enticing mysterious Horror atmosphere from stylishly splintered over saturated glimpses into the origins of Thale.

Based upon the Nordic folklore Hulder creatures, the screenplay by Nordaas wonderfully artefacts from the crime scene where Thale is found to bring the mythical creatures into a modern setting, as Elvis and Leo unearth Sci-Fi government conspiracy-style old recordings, notes and rusting machinery. Not saying one line of dialogue, Silje Reinamo gives a magical turn in the title role, via expressing in her closed-off body language anxiety over trusting Elvis and Leo,which Reinamo gradually shakes off with her tail, to turn the page on the tale of Thale.

FTV:16:Sensuous Sorceress (1970) (Sweden.) 7.

Image

Whilst sadly having visible signs of cuts made with hard edits, (the only version around is 76 minutes, not the 99 minutes this site lists.) co-writer/(with Inge Ivarson) director Torgny Wickman is still thankfully able to sow a erotic-charged Horror atmosphere from Hedvig’s hypnotic naked dance moves, and bedside wide-shots of Sven taking his partner to a possessed climax. Breaking a cross and chucking it on a fire (press those buttons Torgny!) Wickman flexes the erotic with delightfully kitsch horror shocks, from Hedvig openly sowing her next voodoo doll in front of everyone (!) to slam-dunk zoom-ins on the latest killed victim, all firmly held together with a disembodied arm crawling across the house.

Entering the house looking all prim and proper, fittie Anita Sanders gives a great vibrant turn as Anna, whose increasing fear over if what she sees in the house is real, is worn by Sanders with a growing ease of Anna letting her hair down round Hedvig. Keeping Anna and Sven (and the viewer) in her grasp the moment they enter the home, raunchy Solveig Andersson gives a wickedly hot-wire turn as Hedvig, cackling with glee when stabbing her latest voodoo doll, and seductively swaying round the house to get all under her trance,as Hedvig is gazed on by 1000 eyes.

Much here is best left unspoiled, but suffice it to say Max von Sydow is excellent as the title character, playing a physically demanding role with zest and it becomes easy to sympathise with his actions, heinous as they are. The way he manages to inadvertently drive others insane is pretty neat too and the film has an amazingly eerie score from Henry Mancini. The jokey ending is a bit of a disappointment though and bits and pieces strain credibility.

This is a hard film to get invested at first in with over an hour spent on police procedural drama with more dialogue than atmosphere. Things take a curious turn in the final 45 minutes though as - per the title - a sniper starts shooting at cops from the top of a building. With tracking shots and nifty editing, this final stretch is riveting, especially as children and bystanders appear in danger, and it is easy to recommend the film for this alone.

FTV:17:Trollhunter (2010) (Norway.)8.

Image

Taking a sly editing of a real life comment shown at the end and expanding it to the fantastical, the screenplay by writer/director Andre Ovredal treads on the Found Footage genre with a humorous streak, from the folk tale charm Ovredal gives the lone troll hunter Hans (played with a fantastic deadpan seriousness by Otto Jespersen) travelling round the wilderness countryside taking care of troll outbreaks.

Bringing the folklore tales of trolls into the modern world with a surprising thoughtful message about humans actually being the ones who have done the most damage via destruction of troll habitat, Ovredal merrily plays on fairy tales such as Three Billy Goats Gruff, and in outsider film maker Thomas and his crew’s initial sceptic view being changed as they and the audience are taught by Hans more about his trade.

Filmed in the forests and mountains of Western Norway, the CGI effects director Ovredal & cinematographer Hallvard Braein bring the trolls to life with is spectacular, with flash lights at night reflecting on the hairs on the trolls and frosty wide-shots nailing the scale in height between humans and trolls. Splattering Thomas and the film crew with the aftermath of Hans latest kill,Ovredal and Braein bring a wildlife-style documentary atmosphere to the Found Footage genre,in shaky zoom-ins on catching unexpected sightings and jolts when Thomas changes the camera to night vision during a long night of troll hunting.

The story is no great shakes here and the constant poetic title cards about how the bad guy sails "dishonestly" soon tire. What the film really gets right though is the outskirts setting with a daunting river in between the island and the mainland. The locations are simply breathtaking, captured in a range of long distance and medium shots, while the river reacting to wind and other weather factors is photographed in stunning detail.

This film benefits from some stunning snowy landscapes and the middle section of the tale is suspenseful as the young protagonist navigates the antagonists through dangerous mountainous terrain. It takes a long time though for the film to reach this point with a love interest and other dull characters thrown in. The mystical stuff near the end does not quite click either, but damn are those guiding sequences ever so amazingly well filmed.
