It is over thirty minutes in before a drug deal goes awry here and the plot really warms up, and while Mads Mikkelsen is fun as a goofy best friend who injures himself kickboxing in the streets, much of the first third of the movie is just spent on idle conversation between the pair. The film manages to conclude one a stellar final shot though and the final ten minutes boast all the wondrous neon that Nicolas Winding Refn is now best known for.

Well, at least these movies have Åland as a filming site or as a keyword in IMDb. Hovewer, I'm not sure whether it alone suffices to make all of these "cinema of the Åland Islands". Åland is an autonomous, mainly Swedish-speaking archipelago province of Finland, and the country of origin of these movies is Finland (sometimes others too). But I have no idea which of the films have Åland-based funding or key film makers, for example, in case you consider that as an important criterion.

The only available film is this: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9498590/

Long ago I've found a torrent at Kickass, dunno if it's still available. The Pelago Film company is located in its capital, Mariehamn, so it's none of the 'only location' thing.

Barely related to the first Pusher movie and generally the better for it, this sequel follows the experiences of Mads Mikkelsen's goofy sidekick from the original as he similarly gets in over his head in criminal activities. This entry has a higher dosage of neon, some great estranged father/son dynamics and Mikkelsen actually achieves distinct character growth as he gradually comes to accept that it might have fathered a child out of wedlock.

Filmed with deliberately little in the way of sets and props, this is not the easiest film to get into at first; as the plot turns darker and more sinister though, the lack of traditional sets actually enhances the proceedings, highlighting the complicity of the town in her mistreatment as a vulnerable outsider. Nicole Kidman is solid throughout and while the storybook style narration varies in effectiveness, it provides an appropriately fable-like air.

Icelandic musician Jónsi wakes up after a big party at his place and decides to sing and play various tunes rather than clean up in this brief feature that plays out as more of an extended music video than anything else. His songs are certainly pleasant to listen to and there are some cool shots of him reflected and distorted in light globes while playing, but this is generally not a very cinematic experience, so one's mileage will without doubt vary.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

This is a curious attempt to make a realistic vigilante movie; the protagonist has to get himself back into shape before he can exact his revenge and the best part of an hour is spent on personal training and reconnaissance before any substantial action occurs, which makes the action even more brutal when it finally happens. The film has some scripting issues, but I like this decently enough and the unusual-sounding music score is perfectly pensive.

Argh. (D:) Okay, I won't count my chickens yet and I'll try to add a few more Icelandic films to my (already massive) watchlist for the month.

The snowy locations are simply breathtaking here, especially the titular palace full of icicles and seeming hidden passageways. Just as striking are the constant close-ups of the actresses with facial expressions rather than dialogue driving this account of awkwardness and an unspoken bond between two lonely teens. Line Storesund really carries the film with her eyes alone; every emotion is felt through her glances, stares and longing looks. Top stuff.

The whole thing is a little silly and inconsistent in terms of what our young superhero here can and cannot do, but this comedy is made with oodles of energy and there are several genuinely funny moments in the mix, the best of which is probably his dad's nonchalance towards everything sticking to his hands at breakfast. The film unfortunately does not quite get enough mileage though out of his most fascinating superpower: urinating acid.

1. Edvard Munch (1974, Peter Watkins): 8.0 - This unconventional biographical movie about the painter Edvard Munch is a high point of Watkins filmed documentary style in which he reconstructs events on film using non-professional actors. What is even more memorable is the editing; the movie constantly intercuts between timelines, with the same shots coming back frequently at different moments in the film. This continuously intercutting accentuates how a few key experiences formed Munch as a person and an artist. Regarding the later the movie highlights the influence of Munch personal emotions on his art (instead of artistic influences as is common in art history), which is excellently conveyed through the constant intercutting to those formative key events while painting. What might be even more remarkable is how the movie successfully balances these two contrasting uses of time; the chronological retelling of events and the constant shifting between timelines. Through this balance it succeeds in showing both the social political climate in late 19th century North-West Europe as well as the personal emotional live of Munch.

This documentary follows the creators The Pirate Bay (TPB) as they are taken to court. The behind-the-scenes shots of the website's infrastructure are fascinating; same goes for the history of the website as a personal project that gradually grew into something bigger. Alas, while the documentary is clearly designed to exonerate those behind TPB, a several excuses are thrown up with the film never delving quite deep enough into any of them.

FTV:10:Lake of the Dead (1958) (Norway) 8.

Image

Simmering on top of the lake as a narration pours out of Sonja reading out the first draft of her husband Bernhard’s occult novel, writer/director Kare Bergstrom & cinematographer Ragnar Sorensen cloud the lake with eerie Gothic Horror smoke on the water, going far-back in order to cover the screen in the isolated forest, where beams of lights across the cabin dwellers cast a ripple of the reflecting horror lit in misty superimposed images. Swimming towards Bernhard’s novel, Bergstrom takes it out of the lake and into a Old Dark House atmosphere, where the confined large cabin setting is surrounded by excellent rustling outdoor sound effects, and wide, tightly-held corner shots light the cabin fever.

Based on lead actor Andre Bjerke (great as the slow-burn Mork) own novel,Bergstrom’s adaptation delightfully carves into Norwegian wood thumbnail sketches of the tensions each group member brings to the cabin, with Liljan being given given a enticing, ghostly figure quality which the others in the cabin can’t get too close to. Paging from Bernhard writing his novel to the story itself unfolding, Bergstrom merrily plays on the mythical element of Gothic Horror cinema, with a book-ending which rationalizes the occult myths which came out from the lake of the dead.
