The symbolism is on-the-nose here with her seizures coming as the devout religious protagonist begins to experiment with drugs and alcohol and as she begins a lesbian love affair, yet this is still highly engaging stuff with much moody music and a pitch perfect performance by Eili Harboe as the fragile protagonist. There is also the suggestion of something supernatural afoot that that turns this into much more than just another jab at strict religion.

Unfortunately, albajos has not been updating the first post. Since I enjoy some stats and an estimate of the current standings, I took the liberty of putting everything into the table below. Perhaps someone finds interest in this as well. I apologize if this somehow angers or annoys someone. Two entries consisted of shorts from multiple countries: I awarded the point to the country that contributed the majority of runtime.
Thank you! Enjoyable stats!

Silje Reinåmo is excellent here as a mysterious, wide-eyed woman whose movements and reactions seem more animalistic than human. The film also does well conveying her back story only in mere bits and pieces as audio recordings are found and played. Where the film ultimately ends up heading is less interesting than the build-up with a lot of familiarity to how things end up going down. For the most part though, this is a nice unusual horror film.

This bizarre slice-of-life comedy plays out like a series of episodes rather than a cohesive narrative with occasional amusement in one brother interrupting the other on the toilet, or the pair arguing over crosswords. The sudden arrival of an estranged son (with a strange egg fetish) almost adds some direction to the material, but he is never developed beyond his quirks, such as making noises like a hen. The pleasant enough but a bit aimless.

FTV:8:Sin Alley (1957) (Denmark.) 8.

Image

Keeping Sven Gyldmark’s slithering score limited to short bursts, co-directors Palle Kjærulff-Schmidt & Robert Saaskin are joined by cinematographer Rudolf Frederiksen in walking ahead of the French New Wave by a few years in their expert use of a realist soundtrack, filling the moments of silence from Anton walking down side-streets weighing up his options with lone cars passing by and mutterings of folks chatting outside pubs.

Visualising the precise audio design, the directors bring the refined stylisation of Film Noir and Melodrama out in the restrained tracking camera moves following Anton and the lads on the other side of the draped in long shadows tracks, and clipped panning shots in the bar where guys go for their pick-up. Walking in the clouds with Anton to a thinly-veiled Noir guise ending, the screenplay by Kjærulff-Schmidt brilliantly twists the high drama of teen rebellion movies and the loner state of Film Noir, into a fairly frank take on homosexuality. Dropping the young, innocent Anton (played by a great, fresh face Ib Mossin) into mixing with the “wrong crowd” turning tricks, and learning how to hustle older clients. Whilst he has a girlfriend, the fatalistic dialogue Anton has plays on the double meaning of a Film Noir loner looking into the abyss, and of someone, who in the post-WWII era, is found by the cops to be a impressionable youth, who has fallen for the wrong crowd, when taking a walk on the wild side.

As a narrative, this does not offer much new or exciting: lying to friends, cheating on boyfriends, bitchy colleagues - it has all been done before. The film has quite a bit of heart to it too though with Lisa Teige sympathetic the whole way through even as her lies grow more complex, hurtful and out of control. The dance battles are intriguing too, though the film does not always feel like it does the dances justice by seldom focusing on the footwork.

I can do that, yes. Originally I planned to post the leaderboard in ten days or so again if albajos has not turned up again by then, but I guess there is no harm in doing so more regularly. :)

Hey, Trav - if you are reading this, are you able to re-post and update that leaderboard every 2 or 3 days while albajos is absent? Great work. :poshclap:
I can do that, yes. Originally I planned to post the leaderboard in ten days or so again if albajos has not turned up again by then, but I guess there is no harm in doing so more regularly. :)
A good idea would be to ask me first, so that we don't do double the work.

FTV:9:Tilbury (1987) (Iceland.) 8.

Image

Clearly not holding anything back for this TV Movie with a tasty eyeful of boobage within the opening minutes, co-writer/(with Þorarinn Eldjarn) director Vioar Vikingsson & cinematographer Orn Sveinsson milk gloopy splatter horror of a spewing, wonderfully large clawed monster into a bucket of Folk Horror. The second of two Horror films Vikingsson would make for TV channel RUV, (the other is Draugasaga (1985)) Vikingsson melts a eerie Horror atmosphere on on WWII barricades, darting the camera on the dance floor where Audun finds women in a seizure state, and swinging the camera high to take Audun back to his dream childhood memories.

Not credited with the role on IMDb,Kristjan Franklin Magnus (future star of the superb Nordic Noir TV series Trapped) gives a terrific turn as Audun, thanks to Magnus digging under Audun hard skin from the army, to unveil curiosity of the odd shape he sees moving at night. Churning the Icelandic folklore Tilberi onto TV, the screenplay by Vikingsson and Eldjarn cross-stitch the rustic Folk Horror details of the creature, with a enticing mystery of Audun slipping pass all those who want to keep the town secret safe, in order to drain the Tillbury.

This deliberately paced drama benefits from a terrific lead performance by Johannes Brost, but it never really feels like it goes anywhere. It is certainly not a tale of someone trying to rationalise his crime and personal ethics a la Crimes and Misdemeanors, nor is it a tale of a man's guilt gradually getting the better of him a la The Informer. There are many memorable moments though - e.g. Brost bathing in blue discotheque lights to the title song.

Hi morrison! Glad to see you back to the challenges this month, very much enjoying your progress in the Nordic one. Yes, Grede's legendary 'Hugo och Josefin' is indeed a lovely film, with the world of painful discoveries, solitudes and sorrows seen through the imaginative eyes of two very special children; a film of little mementos and exhilarating insights, gorgeously photographed.
