This round's on me, folks!

Doubling the Canon Nominations Challenge

Goal
Watch as many Doubling the Canon Nominees as you can from 1 April 2020 to 30 April 2020.

Rules
- Each feature film (over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- 60 minutes of short films counts as one entry.
- Episodes of miniseries follow the standard 40/60 rule.
- Rewatches are allowed and good for the soul.
- Please include year of release when listing your viewings.

Stats & Formatting:
- Title (year) is the preferred format
- For Miniseries episodes, please use "Series Title: Episode Title" as the title
- New posts are preferred over edited posts

List of Eligible Films:
Doubling the Canon Nominees - ICM list
Doubling the Canon Nominees - IMDB list

That's it. If it's not on that list, it's not eligible for this challenge.

BONUS GAME: Promote Your DtC Nominees!

This is an unofficial side game with its own rules to allow you to promote your (or others') DtC Nominees. I would encourage everyone to play along as much as they are willing/able to do so to help view/promote our forum folk's favorites.

Bonus Game Rules:
- To play, you must participate in the Official challenge. To participate, you must watch and record at least one film in the thread.
- You are allowed to "promote" one of your DtC nominees - it gets listed in the OP and becomes a film eligible for the bonus game.
- If you watch 5 other people's films for the bonus game, you can "promote" another film.
- If 5 4 other people watch your film for the bonus game, you can "promote" another film.
- No watching your own nominees for the bonus game (they, of course, count for the official challenge).
- Shorts and miniseries all count the same for the bonus challenge - use strategy when choosing what to promote.
- Post an ICM link to your film along with the name of the film you're promoting.

A couple tips:
- Post early, so your film has more of a chance to be seen
- Post your first film promotion along with your first watch for the challenge

nice. I'm at 208 but that's probably not accurate; there are a few I've seen that I need to check. Overzealously shooting for 333/1333, more likely 275.

Currently at 439/1333, I will definitely participate. I have a watchlist of 80 titles, but I will probably end up having watched 20 of those, I'm afraid (especially with a Fassbinder mini-series in the midst).

Still, I will do my best...

I'm in, will do an overlap with the 50s challenge early on, and then, when I hit my 25 mark there go all in for DtC.

I'll be in. I never actually participate in the nomination process itself but I always dig the variety on offer here.

It starts! First in. :D

1. One Day in September (1999)

Image

This is a well-researched and informative documentary, full of fascinating archive footage, illustrative animated sequences and intriguing interviews with a surviving terrorist. The presentation nevertheless leaves a little bit to be desired. Kevin Macdonald and his team always seem most interested in Germany's response and how they were ill-prepared rather than the Israeli-Palestinian stuff. All the rock/pop music was also a bit odd at times.

I dont understand how something can **NOT** be on the 2020 nominee list, but it is currently on the "Doubling the Canon" official list.

1. Bitter Victory (1957)
2. Higanbana (1958)

Thanks for hosting funky! Looking forward to working my way through everyone's nominations.

1. Happy Feet (2006)
2. Cockfighter (1974)

I kicked off the challenge last night with an unintentional double bill about birds. First up was Happy Feet, a fairly innocuous children's animated film from George Miller of Mad Max fame. It starts to get a little interesting when it ramps up the tension with a rather blunt ecological message but the singing and dancing penguins get tiresome pretty quickly.

Next up was Cockfighter, a DTC revote that is also competing in the World Cup. If you can look past the barbaric clips of chickens ripping shreds out of each other there is a half decent film here. Warren Oates is convincing as a self-imposed mute who makes a pact not to speak until he wins the coveted Cockfighter of the year award and there are a handful of comic moments that really connect.

My pick for the bonus challenge is The Queen of Spades as nominated for DTC by Mauries. I was planning on picking this for England in the WC if I had progressed to a later stage so it seems fitting to get a chance to promote it here instead. It's a supernatural tale based on a gripping Russian short story and Martin Scorsese ushered in its restoration a few years back as he is a big fan of the film. I have nominated it for DTC previously but it didn't make the cut, maybe if some more people give it a shot it could stand a better chance this time round.

Half allegory, half dark tale of corruption and extortion in modern Russia. Slow, but the direction is very interesting.

Does anyone happen to have any insight as to what Kim Ki-Young's fascination with this particular story line is? He made pretty much this same movie at least three times (Hanyo 1960 and Hwanyeo '82).

Thanks though for giving the film a shot. :) I will always continue to champion Rolf de Heer as our best filmmaker even if I can't get others on board...

1. One Day in September (1999)

2. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)

This won James Dunn a well-deserved Oscar for playing an alcoholic father as more than just a stereotype, yet it is Peggy Ann Garner as his daughter who totally owns the film with her varied facial expressions, frequently pensive looks and genuine warmth between herself and Dunn. Dunn is absent for a quite stretch though and all the scenes that focus on characters other than Dunn and Garner are a lot less interesting, but this is very engaging stuff.

Posting my first watch now to make sure I don't forget and therefore get my Bonus Game movie up early.

1. Rapsodia satanica (1917) - 7/10

Bonus Game:
Córki dancingu (2015)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/corki+dancingu/

Also, any chance of getting the bonus movies in a list. If I get a chance to watch one I don't want to have to go searching through all the posts to see the options available to me.

This is mostly just a series of comedic swordfights and daring stunts but it is fairly entertaining if lacking as a narrative. At its best, Linder fools a guard into thinking that he has disappeared by shadowing the guard's every move in perfect synchrony. This is a difficult film to properly evaluate though given that no complete version reportedly still exists. What can be made out is of interest though if never as hilarious as Seven Years Bad Luck.

It is a fun enough idea at first as the camp counselors here are depicted as even more immature than their kids. It soon becomes obvious that this is the only dynamic driving the whole film though - and the kids oddly receive far less screen time than the adults. The film does at least treat homosexuality with respect, though gee, the filmmakers seem to do everything possible to ridicule the camp's psychologically scarred Vietnam War veteran cook.
