There are several striking images and an iconic villain design in Maleficent here, but the title character is very passive and barely has any personality with very little spoken dialogue. Her prince is only slightly less passive, and while there is something refreshing in how the surrogate aunts (fairies) are mostly responsible for saving the day, they are also the ones who allow the protagonist to be kidnapped. Quite watchable but not really my thing.

39. Tobor the Great (1954)
This turned out to be a very kid-oriented film with an easily predictable plot and light peril that wasn't terribly satisfying. The robot design is an amusingly kitsch style though with it's carrot like eyes and bulbous head that bears a striking resemblance in some ways to Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet and B9 from Lost in Space (both from the same designer Robert Kinoshita who contrary to popular belief did not work on this film). I have to wonder if Kinoshita took inspiration from this movie when designing those though.

One of the funniest actors of the 1940s, Askey was sadly a little past his prime by the time of this film, and while he does have a very amusing bit early on as he manages to distract an elderly magistrate, the scene mostly works due to Robb Wilton's baffled reactions as the magistrate in question. As for the rest of the film, the brightest parts come whenever Danny Ross is on screen as an accident-prone love interest for Askey's daughter (not oft enough).

Hilarious in the previous year's The Good Humor Man, it is curious to see Jack Carson cast in a very different role as a sneaky and conniving character and the film gets off to a solid start with Carson trying to con street customers with fake miracle soap. The subsequent wrestling match fixing stuff is a lot less funny though and there is way too much time spent on Carson and his colleagues futilely trying to wear an honest wrestling champ down.

12. Umberto D. (1952)
13. The Big Combo (1955)
14. Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959)
15. The Sharkfighters (1956)
Supposedly based on a true story, this is about a Navy program to develop a shark repellent. Interestingly, this is the first American film to be shot entirely in Cuba. And there were some nice shots of Cuba and the waters, but it's a mediocre movie otherwise.

16. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
This was all over the place... from what might be the best non-Busby-Berkeley dance sequence I've seen to some really terribly cringey scenes. Overall good and enjoyable.

Kinoshita films usually fall a bit flat for me, but this one's better than some. The film concerns the troubles that ensue when a married couple live separately for the summer so that the ambitious husband can rent his house to his boss as a summer residence. It wanders around some, but there was enough to keep my attention.

Simmering on top of the lake as a narration pours out of Sonja reading out the first draft of her husband Bernhard’s occult novel, writer/director Kare Bergstrom & cinematographer Ragnar Sorensen cloud the lake with eerie Gothic Horror smoke on the water, going far-back in order to cover the screen in the isolated forest, where beams of lights across the cabin dwellers cast a ripple of the reflecting horror lit in misty superimposed images. Swimming towards Bernhard’s novel, Bergstrom takes it out of the lake and into a Old Dark House atmosphere, where the confined large cabin setting is surrounded by excellent rustling outdoor sound effects, and wide, tightly-held corner shots light the cabin fever.

Based on lead actor Andre Bjerke (great as the slow-burn Mork) own novel,Bergstrom’s adaptation delightfully carves into Norwegian wood thumbnail sketches of the tensions each group member brings to the cabin, with Liljan being given given a enticing, ghostly figure quality which the others in the cabin can’t get too close to. Paging from Bernhard writing his novel to the story itself unfolding, Bergstrom merrily plays on the mythical element of Gothic Horror cinema, with a book-ending which rationalizes the occult myths which came out from the lake of the dead.

I actually recently saw an episode of Twilight Zone with the same basic premise as this terrible movie (S5E18 "Black Leather Jackets") minus the killer space lobster and uh, gotta say Twilight Zone did it better in only 20 minutes.

Surprisingly brutal and lurid for the time period it was produced, this was a pretty decent speculative fiction version of the Jack the Ripper killings.

For a film built on the singular joke of Jerry Lewis being an utterly incompetent soldier, this is a surprisingly entertaining affair with Robert Strauss (of Stalag 17 fame) well cast as a no-nonsense sergeant who ends up liking and promoting Lewis further and further thanks to happy accidents making Lewis appear adept. The scenes without Strauss are not nearly as dynamic though, but an under-the-table train scene is certainly well-timed and funny.

32. The Big Country (1958) 7.0/10
33. Shree 420 (1958). The story of an youngster who thought the whole world belongs to him, because he had a government diploma. He meets a beautiful, intelligent women who for unknown reasons falls in love with this guy who does not learn from any one mistakes he makes. He's like everybody is wrong and he's right, the new messiah. He makes some highly despicable decisions, rendering him, one could say, an asshole. His girlfriend, a truly great person, running a school for poor children, seems to be unhealthily attracted by this bad boy attitude. In the end, she even uses the typical excuse, that it's all society faults that he became a low-life criminal of the worst sort (in reality, from scene to scene, we see members of this society helping this bum without expecting anything in return). The rich are all depicted as evil crooks, which is quite childish. I pity the Indian audience who thought this is an adequate way to deal with social problems, and I'm heartbroken to say that I'm not surprised that they are were they are now (Not that they as individuals deserve it).

There's no happy end.
But the production values for this 50s bollywood movie are fantastic and the songs are lovable, cinematography is good. 6.8/10

The idea here has decent comedic potential and an awkward dinner where two ladies meet (unaware of that they have both won the same part) is great, but the film does not generally go for laughs. Instead, there are lots of musical numbers, some of which just lead to the characters sitting down to sing! The clear highlight is O'Connor singing a "bounce right back" song with a group of kids while performing similar acrobatics to Singin' in the Rain.

Man, this had the most obvious undercover snitch I think I've ever seen in a movie. Every time the gang goes over a new plan, he IMMEDIATELY is like, 'I need to go to the other room for a minute'.

This really pales against Jumping Jacks, M&L's other 1952 comedy, not to mention their subsequent Frank Tashlin films. There are amusing bits and pieces (Jerry's stare back; a sinking submarine; a kooky boxing match), but the plot is extremely episodic with the flow of the film further interrupted by providing way too many opportunities for Dino to sing. It is also a shame to see Robert Strauss -- so effective in Jumping Jacks -- wasted here.

Capra always gets to me, and this was no exception.

10. H-8... by Nikola Tanhofer (1958) 9/10

A great movie, with masterful character building and a discreet mastery of camera movements and editing. Quite an intense story, too... This will join my 500<400 list next time.

Not the Martin & Lewis comedy, this was Peggy Mount's first leading role and she certainly plays the part with gusto. Unfortunately, she is never once likeable and with her constant shouting and complaining, her act tires quickly (Mount would fare much better in Ladies Who Do seven years later). The supporting players here certainly do fine though, with Gordon Jackson solid as a nervous sailor and Geoffrey Keen getting a nice turn towards the end.

FTV:12:Raggare! (1959)(Sweden.) 9.

Image

Hanging in the back seat as the guys drive round for some cherries to pop, writer/director Olle Hellbom picks a rough and ready Punk Noir atmosphere off from the streets, gathering all the rebellious youth in a cramped cafe that Hellbom pans the camera across the cafe, capturing the cramped, pent-up tension between each gang. Rocking Bibban between Roffe and Lasse, Hellbom rides them out to a shattering doom-laden final ride with excellent, drenched in shadow close-ups of Bibban eyeing her transformation from pretty young thing into a drained Femme Fatale, being seated next to the rogue, ruthless youthfulness of Roffe being pelted with lines of white lights unzipping each of his rough edges.

Unbuckling all the gangs hanging outside the cafe working on their cars/bikes, the screenplay by Hellbom superbly kicks-starts the troubled relationship between Roffe and Bibban with the spike of the youthful rebellion frustrations of the era, as Roffe hits out at anyone who tries to put limits on him, and becomes growing abusive over Bibban saying no. Wonderfully contrasting the abrasiveness of Roffe, Hellbom gives the growing bond between Bibban and Lasse a sweet teenage innocence, sparkling in the crisp dialogue between the pair in car rides, driving towards love, before being taken by Roffe off the tracks. Hit by rocks of those who want to knock her down,Christina Schollin gives a outstanding Femme Fatale performance as Bibban, thanks to Schollin wearing a flirting, knife-edge rebellion streak, with a underlying romantic warmth for Lasse, away from the wild one.
