37. Strange Days (1995, Kathryn Bigelow): 5.8 - Overal this should have been trimmed into a tighter plot under 2hrs at least, now it's over long and over-stuffed. The action scenes are good, though, so are the POV bits. Ralph Fiennes is cool and a good enough actor to also convey some depth to his character. Bassett does a good job also. Juliette Lewis is annoying. - BC#2 Miranda Warning

This documentary has drawn some criticism since it excuses the victim's parents who allowed her abuse to go on, yet the focus of the film is how trusting they were and how the 1970s were such a different time. It make you wonder if something like this could still happen today. The project also benefits from superb home video style reenactments throughout that perfectly illustrate all the insecurities and emotions that the interviewees share.

30. Crime Wave (André de Toth, 1953) (re-watch)

TCM. Came for the Eddie Muller intro, stayed for the whole film. I must have watched this pretty early in my noir aficionado-dom, probably around 2005-6 or so. And probably on VHS, on my old 27" analog TV, else I probably would have remembered the amazing photography (by Bert Glennon) and use of Los Angeles locations; this has a greater veneer of authenticity than just about any film of the era I can remember actually - apart from the apartment of hapless ex-con Steve Lacey, who is being pulled into a new racket by a trio of recent prison escapees, even the interiors here are mostly real locations, and the variety of street scenes and shots of the cityscape and surrounding mountains is tremendous. Don't know how Thom Andersen missed this one when putting together Los Angeles Plays Itself, but perhaps it wasn't as widely available at the time or he hadn't seen it. Anyway while the story is familiar enough, everything else about this is tremendous - the locations give de Toth, one of the masters of creating filmic space on sets, something new to play with, and he's got one of the best casts ever assembled for a low budget crime picture in that era - Sterling Hayden as the cop in charge who chews toothpicks and speaks a mile a minute in the snappiest of aphorisms, Ted de Corsia and Charles Buchinsky (you may know him as Charles Bronson) as the two main hoods, Jay Novello as the sleazy doctor, Dub Taylor in a bit as the gas station attendant at the beginning, and Timothy Carey, unbilled in one of his earliest roles as the lowest of the henchmen. Perhaps Gene Nelson (mostly a musical star) and Phyllis Kirk are a little bland as the ex-con trying to go straight and his wife, but in this case I think that works to the benefit of the film, as we see how being the all-American whitebread couple really isn't going to save you from the dark noir labyrinth, no matter how hard you try; Hayden says as much in his last little speech to the couple. Really one of the all-time great low budget crime films of any era, and more evidence for me that de Toth is right up there with Richard Fleischer as one of the most underrated masters of American genre films.

31. Hollywood Vice Squad (Penelope Spheeris, 1986)

This is for the most part a cheesy exploitation film, typical of it's era; as you'd expect from this director there's lots of music, and it's reasonably well used, and it's got a good second-tier star cast including Ronny Cox, Frank Gorshin, Leon Isaac Kennedy and Carrie Fisher - the main reason I saw this, she was probably my first celebrity crush. Anyway you basically have two teams of vice squad cops in two unrelated stories (weird - you'd expect they'd come together in some fashion at the end): Fisher and her team are trying to bust a pornography director who they think might be using underaged performers and coercion/violence, and the other team that includes Kennedy and Cec Verrell is going after Gorshin's prostitution business. Really nice use of Los Angeles locations, definitely has some of both the grungy parts of the city and the shallow glitz on display, but ultimately rather boring, without enough of those exploitative elements like nudity or violence to really stand out.

32. Guncrazy (Tamra Davis, 1992)

Been too long since I've seen Joseph H. Lewis' cult classic Gun Crazy (1950) to be able to say if there's anything beyond the title as a real inspiration here; to me this is more reminiscent of other girls-on-the-run with/without bad boys flicks of the same period like The Legend of Billie Jean from a few years earlier, or Freeway which came a few years later. So part of the rural-set or road-movie branch of the neo-noir movement? Anyway, regardless of where this fits in genre-wise, it's pretty mediocre and dull. Drew Barrymore is a teenager in an awful little town living in a trailer with the abusive boyfriend of her absent mother, who writes to a convict (the utterly bland James Le Gros) as part of a school pen-pal project. When he saves a guard's life, he's paroled on the condition of getting a job with preacher/mechanic Billy Drago but things soon turn dark of course and the couple is on the run with several bodies behind them. There seems to be a clear intent to make some statements about good and evil and what a person's "soul" is compared to what their actions show - the town is called Hell and the preacher's sermons on the subject, etc, but it doesn't add up to anything deeper than a petri dish in the end. Drew's pretty sexy and I always like Drago but that's not nearly enough to make this really worthwhile.

33. Tees Maar Khan (Farah Khan, 2010)

OK so this one has a 2.5 rating on IMDb - perfect for the low ratings challenge in a few months if you're reading this. And that's where it belongs; while I trust IMDb ratings for contemporary Bollywood films even less than I do for most films, sometimes they're on the money. This is an absolutely unbearable crime-comedy about India's most notorious criminal (the name is the title) planning a train robbery in some small town dump while pretending to make a movie starring his girlfriend and one of India's biggest stars who he's suckered into believing will be up for an Oscar for it. This is obviously trying to satirize Bollywood but it's so broad and frenetic (a positive in some ways - it's only just over 2 hours long) that the jokes all fall flat or just zip by too quickly, at least for someone who's not that in up on the industry. But given the across-the-board hatred for this film it seems even Indians who love their pop films aren't impressed. This fits almost every negative stereotype most of us probably have about Bollywood - I mean this picture pretty much says it all

Image

The whole film ultimately seems thrown together just to showcase the very repetitive music and the mugging and sexy dancing respectively of stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. Oh and there's some rather irritating gay stereotyping going on though at the end of the film it's not clear if it's meant to be positive or negative - it comes across poorly to me but I get the sense that the filmmakers might have thought they were being progressive. Anyway, complete garbage.

Far from your average rape/revenge movie, a group of victims form a support group here and decide to kidnap and surgically castrate repeat rapists. This is a very angry movie, and while the anger at a legal system that lets men off the hook too easily only works if you really believe that the system is that corrupt, all of the anger aimed at the dismissive male relatives of rape victims resonates. Lots of creative and stylish editing throughout too.

And that's it for me. A surprising strong end to the Challenge. Thanks for hosting, blocho. B) Of course, the real crime here is probably yet to come when all the self-isolating participants submit tons of viewings over the next few hours and kick me out of the top five. <_<

38. Ronin (1998, John Frankenheimer) (rewatch): 8.0 > 8.2 - Last but not least, in fact the best of them all, is this late career highlight from Frankenheimer: a top notch heist movie with amazing car chases, great action, witty dialogues and a stellar cast. The plot has plenty double crosses and twists, but not so much it spoils the effectiveness of the basic simple "protagonist has to get MacGuffin" premise. - BC#1 Computer Crimes

The Crime Challenge, sadly, is now over. Please make any final submissions in the next day. I'll probably post final results sometime on April 3.

Thanks to all who participated. It's been fun.

48-57. Better Call Saul (2.6 seasons, 26 episodes, 1217 minutes)
This month sucked me very deep into Breaking Bad land, and the ride has been great. I'm really not a TV person generally, which means that I've never actually watched a spin-off series before (unless you count The Simpsons), but my understanding is that spin-off series almost always suck. So what a surprise Better Call Saul has been, though perhaps it shouldn't have been given its focus on the two best non-lead characters from Breaking Bad and the heavy involvement of Breaking Bad directors/producers/writers. What's really enjoyable is that those two characters, Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill (aka Saul Goodman) and Jonathan Bank's Mike Ehrmantraut, had been a bit one-dimensional in Breaking Bad. In this series, they become truly fascinating and compelling characters, with both actors showing they can handle the dramatic parts just as well as the comedic bits.

Here are the episodes for some of the bonus challenges:
1.1 - "Uno" - Closing Statement
1.2 - "Mijo" - Trial
1.3 - "Nacho" - Embezzlement
1.4 - "Hero" - Bribery
2.8 - "Fifi" - Fraud

It was just about the most unbearable film I've seen in the last month, and March had it's share of crap - some of it much, much longer. I was tired and fairly drunk by the end of it but I just had to watch something afterward to cleanse the palate. I've only really liked one S. Coppola film and I've seen them all except for Marie Antoinette which I have the feeling won't be much better than this. Oh, looks like she co-directed a production of La Traviata also; I'd watch that but given how rarely I watch opera or music performances, can't say it'd happen except by chance.

Final Summary

The Crime Challenge, much like the lives of so many of our favorite cinematic criminals, has ended. And though we've all learned from the movies that crime doesn't pay (except when it definitely does), I think the Crime Challenge has paid off handsomely. It's been a lot of fun to host, and I thank all participants. For complete results, check the OP.

Main Challenge
We finished with 30 participants who earned a cumulative total of 790 points. That works out to a mean score of 26.3 points and a median of 21 points. AB537 won the main challenge with 67 points, followed by flavo5000 (61 points), blocho (57), jdidaco (48), and sol (47).

Bonus Challenge #1: Crime Wave
Maxwelldeux was the only person to complete this bonus challenge, finishing with 24 crimes, an unparalleled crime spree. Flavo5000 was right behind with 23 crimes, while Lonewolf2003 was a bit further back with 20 crimes. If I had guessed before the challenge began what would be the most common crime, I would have said murder, theft, or assault. But it was actually attempted murder that was most common, having been committed 13 times. It seems we're all better at attempting murder rather than getting the deed done. Tax evasion was the least common crime, as there were only three acts of evasion. It's not a particularly cinematic crime, after all.

Bonus Challenge #2: Law and Order
Maxwelldeux was the only person to complete this bonus challenge, finishing with 15 points. I can't imagine what would happen if Max the cop met Max the criminal. Blocho was second with 10 points, followed by ororama and Chris Reynolds with 8 points each. Police brutality and police interrogation were the most common categories, each occurring 8 times (it turns out the cops and the criminals are sometimes the same). Testimony was the least common category, happening only once.

Bonus Challenge #3: Blocho's Crime Block
Mochard was the only person to complete this challenge, watching all six movies. Shugs, the only other participant, saw one movie. Next time, perhaps, I'll pick less obscure movies.
