Image

Rather than a Bonnie and Clyde pastiche, River of Grass is about two characters who think that they are like Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway and embark on a series of adventures that are actually pretty mundane. Watching this play out is less interesting than discussing it though. Neither protagonist is very likeable and the persistent voice-over narration from the woman tends to only spell out her every emotion. Strong ending though.

This one is from the list of modern female Japanese directors that psychotronicbeatnik posted a few days ago, and it was a delightful find! Its quirky, easy-going message of enjoying the small things in live away from the hustle & bustle of modern living is a particularly relevant one with what's going on out there these days. I'm going to have to look into more movies on that list.

Certainly there is quite a bit to like in the filmmakers not shying away from showing the women at their most intimate; the film also benefits from a terrific turn by Patricia Charbonneau as the younger woman who is open about her sexuality despite some disapproval. Helen Shaver is less interesting as the other woman though and the romance almost seems to come out of nowhere, without any of the telling looks and stares of something like Carol.

P.S.: I love the coincidental aesthetics of my latest movie viewings, thanks largely to this challenge:

22. The Daughters of Fire (2018, Albertina Carri)
I definitely needed the Mubi take on this in order to appreciate it, as it's a boring story with undeveloped characters. BUT - I really liked it and how it subverted the "male gaze" and focused on women who actually seem to enjoy each other. Tons of symbolism to unpack and a really fascinating treatment of sex and sexuality. My wife, who spent quite a bit of time in grad school studying porn, sex, and sexuality from a feminist perspective, watched it with me and absolutely LOVED it and what it brought to the table.

23. Obvious Child (2014, Gillian Robespierre)
A pretty solid story that actually shows the positive aspects of abortion. Quite a few funny moments in there.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell is excellent throughout here as she is forced to reevaluate what is right and wrong, witnessing her father's infidelity and suffocated by her mother's superstitions that lead to her and her siblings being forcibly housebound. The film often feels uneven as it darts between the various older characters, but with lots of stylishly done visions, black and white nightmares and so on in the mix, the whole thing is appropriately dreamy.

Best known for netting Maggie Gyllenhaal a Golden Globe nomination in its day, she lives up to hype, remaining sympathetic throughout despite a number of character flaws that quickly become evident. Ryan Simpkins (excellent in Arcadia) is well cast as her very young daughter too, navigating confusing times and mixed messages from Gyllenhaal's brother's wife who has been raising her. They could have done with more scenes together though.

I thought I'd work in one more block of anime before the end of the month.

Image
84-87a. Ristorante Paradiso E1-11 (Mitsuko Kase, 2009)

Image
87b. Blue Spring Ride OVA E1 (Ai Yoshimura, 2014)
88a. Blue Spring Ride OVA E2 (Ai Yoshimura, 2014)

Image
88b. Rakusho! Hyper Doll E1-2 (Makoto Moriwaki, 1995)

Image
89. Water (Deepa Mehta, 2005)

Image
90. Blue Steel (Kathryn Bigelow, 1989)

Image
91. The Oracle (Roberta Findlay, 1985)

Image
92. Deadly Dreams (Kristine Peterson, 1988)

One thing I've enjoyed about this challenge in particular is the sheer breath of types of movies that fall into the theme which just proves that women are capable of making pretty much every kind of film that men are, from tense thrillers to schlocky horror to contemplative dramas. Really the biggest blindspot this challenge has is the period from roughly the 1930s through 1960s. Yes, there are exceptions like Ida Lupino (which reminds me I should try to squeeze one of hers in before the end of the month) but certainly the Hollywood system had issues with inclusion much more so than now.

This is like a blend of Hiroshima, mon Amour and Last Year at Marienbad with luscious, slow-moving camerawork that glides across rooms, though it stands in the shadow of those Resnais masterworks. The actors are given little to do with their characters only developed in what the off-screen commentators say, while the film lacks the otherworldly mysteriousness of Resnais. It succeeds though in capturing their boredom and purposelessness.

Emily Lloyd is okay in the lead role here, but after such extreme bitterness early on, she gets on her father's side far too easily and nothing early on signals the criminal mastermind that she proves to be. The film's best asset is a sympathetic Peter Falk as her father who genuinely wants to reconnect with his kid; the supporting cast also boasts some big names but they are given little to do. The film is sometimes clever but rarely all that funny.

Also known as The Convincer, this crime thriller follows a conniving insurance salesman whose scheme to steal a client's valuable violin backfires. The final 20 minutes are interesting as more is revealed about the plot than what is obvious and Greg Kinnear's talks about how to con clients into insurance are fascinating, but he is never charming enough to root for and the film's attempted black comedy vibe suffers from too few quirky side characters.

As Good As Any Man...no, BetterShow
1. Talaash (Reema Kagti, 2012)
2. Siesta (Mary Lambert, 1987) (re-watch)
3. Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (Cathy Yan, 2020) (cinema)

4-5. Star Trek: Picard 3 episodes 44+43+42=129 minutes

a) Episode 1 "Remembrance" (Hanelle M. Culpepper, 2020)
b) Episode 2 "Maps and Legends" (Hanelle M. Culpepper, 2020)
c) Episode 3 "The End is the Beginning" (Hanelle M. Culpepper, 2020)

6. Portrait de la jeune fille en feu / Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma, 2019) (cinema)
7. Naissance des pieuvres / Water Lilies (Céline Sciamma, 2007)
8. Talvar / Guilty (Meghna Gulzar, 2015)
9. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Episode 2 - "The Dying Detective" (Sarah Hellings, 1994)
10. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Episode 4 - "The Red Circle" (Sarah Hellings, 1994)
11. Blue Steel (Kathryn Bigelow, 1990) (re-watch)
12. Wanda (Barbara Loden, 1970)
13. Street Corner (Muriel Box, 1953)
14. Eyewitness (Muriel Box, 1956)
15. Mi vida loca (Allison Anders, 1993)
16. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Episode 6 - "The Cardboard Box" (Sarah Hellings, 1994)
17. Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (Mira Nair, 1996, USA/INDIA /UK/Japan/Germany)
18. Subway in the Sky (Muriel Box, 1959)

The third, last, and least of Box's crime-noir dramas in the 50s, this has a semi-promising start as we witness a murder on the edge of a military facility, and the criminal escapes... switch to Van Johnson, who might be that criminal, a US military doctor (Van Johnson) in Berlin, who invades an apartment owned by his estranged wife only to find out that she's lent it out to a singer (Hildegard Knef) who he compels to hide him as the military police move in. Of course there are twists and turns to the story involving the wife, her son, etc, and it's reasonably fast-paced and not poorly made really, but the cheapness of the production in this case do hurt it a bit (all done in the UK on soundstages, this is never for a moment believable as taking place in Berlin) and Van Johnson just really isn't cut out for this kind of role. Meh.

19. Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché (Pamela B. Green, 2018)

TCM. Nicely done documentary, narrated by Jody Foster, about the very long (94+ years) life and cinematic times of the world's first female director, who never achieved the renown in her own lifetime that she should have, but who clearly has an importance on the level of the Lumières and Georges Méliès, the only significant French filmmakers who were also working as early as 1896 when she started making films while a secretary to Léon Gaumont. This is a fairly conventional doc overall, and suffers to a certain extent from near-hagiography, and it doesn't really give us enough evidence of Guy's artistic qualities, though it certainly makes the case well for her historical importance. And it definitely offers plenty of valuable information to those, like me, who haven't read a lot about her or seen other documentaries dealing with her. I wish the vast number of brief talking heads clips, particularly those with contemporary figures, i.e. Scorsese, Varda, could have been instead replaced with a smaller number of longer interviews, but all the historical interviews with Varda herself, her daughter, etc, were priceless.

20. The Ocean Waif (Alice Guy, 1916)

TCM. Short feature about the titular "waif" (Doris Kenyon), who takes refuge in a "haunted" house being leased by handsome writer Carlyle Blackwood, in an effort to escape her would-be rapist stepfather who she lives with and serves in squalor. This does a good job showing Guy's "be natural" dictum as regards the acting, overall - Kenyon in particular seems a little more real than most of her contemporaries (i.e. the Gishes and Mary Pickford) in their early films - and it's really nicely shot, though in the end it doesn't really add up to anything special. At this point it's Guy's later shorts from her French period, particularly her travelogues (1905's Espagne for example) that impress me the most, though I still have much to see.

21. Star Trek: Picard - Episode 6 "The Impossible Box" (Maja Vrvilo, 2020)
22. Star Trek: Picard - Episode 8 "Broken Pieces" (Maja Vrvilo, 2020)

I'm already forgetting these just a few days after seeing them. Don't know what to say about this series other than IT SUCKS honestly; I will say that despite the large number of producers, writers, and directors over the 10 episodes, it's fairly consistent in it's storytelling, so there's that. And a few of the actors - Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine and Santiago Cabrera as Captain Rios - manage to rise above the dreck to some extent, but that's about it. I'm glad the last episode has a proper ending - no cliffhanger till next year - because this is where I step off.

Made up to look homely and unfeminine, this is hardly Reese Witherspoon's finest performance. Her character also has a far too obvious arc, but she gets some great lines though which she delivers in a perfectly deadpan manner. There are also some very zany scenes in the mix; most notably a group of senior citizens cheering on as their bus is commandeered in a highway pursuit. More madness like this and less height jokes would have been great.
