We need more of thisShow
1. American Factory (2019)
2. The Virgin Suicides (1999, Sofia Coppola)
3. Gilmore Girls: I Solemnly Swear (2003, Carla McClosky)
4. Kathleen Madigan: Bothering Jesus (2016, Lorene Machado/Kathleen Madigan)

10. Gilmore Girls: The Big One (2003, Jamie Babbit)
11. Making a Murderer Part 2: A Legal Miracle (2018, , Moira Demos/Laura Ricciardi)

17. Heir to an Execution (2004, Ivy Meeropol)
18. Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop (2015, Erin Lee Carr)
More comments in the Crime thread, but I'm really digging Erin Lee Carr as a director - she does documentary work, and she's rapidly approaching making my favorite directors list (I'm one feature short on her). This was very good (7/10), Mommy Dead and Dearest is really good (8/10), and she also directed my favorite episode of Dirty Money. Worth checking her stuff out, and I *think* everything she's directed would count for both this and the Crime challenge.

Hi, Maxwell--I saw Mommy Dead and Dearest--it was terrific. What a crazy story. I'll watch The Case of the Cannibal Cop also. I could be wrong, but it seems like women directors are very willing to tackle stories of child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual abuse. These are topics they don't shy away from. I don't think society allows men to really explore or tell their experiences as much, but they need to also.

It really was good! Cannibal Cop wasn't quite as good, IMHO, but explored a much more complex issue, and actually made you feel a little empathy for this cop. Blurring the line between free speech and conspiracy is hard, but it was really interesting to watch, especially given that the stories were about kidnapping, torturing, and eating women, told by a female director. But I finished her directorial filmography tonight... so stay tuned.

20. I Love You, Now Die: The Defense (2019, Erin Lee Carr)
21. At the Heart of Gold (2019, Erin Lee Carr)

OK. I had to finish out her directorial films tonight, and she might be the first director for whom I've ever sought out to do this. She'll be on my favorite directors list next year for sure (currently, she'd rank in the low-40s for me, based on my rating methods).

Both Thought Crimes and I Love You, Now Die tackled really complex and nuanced subjects, and she seemed to take an objective approach to them and not shy away from the tough calls made in the US justice system. Both of these really made you think about the cases and form your own opinions (which I can attest to, because my wife and I got into an argument over one of them). Mommy Dearest (not watched for this challenge by me) was just a fascinating story that required a skilled storyteller to relay it in a consumable way.

At the Heart of Gold was in many respects an easier story to tell (I mean, no ethical or reasonable person is pro child porn or pro sexual abuse), but (I'd argue) a tougher directorial project. The decades-long sexual abuse by Larry Nassar is awful (understatement of the year) - no doubt, but conveying that is easy. What's hard is conveying it in a way that doesn't overwhelm or put off the viewer. Weirdly, I might draw a parallel to Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams - the story in both cases is SO compelling that the job of the director is largely to just get out of the way, and in both cases I'd argue that was successful. But what I really appreciated in Heart of Gold was the climax of the film. [It's a well-known outcome so I'm not spoiling it.] 156 victims read impact statements in court. You could make a fairly successful doc about nothing but that. But Carr's skill here was in telling the story so you felt the emotional impact, but had relief while ultimately feeling the necessary catharsis. Yes, you heard several victim impact statements in the doc - but they were broken up with facts and details to provide you some emotional relief so you didn't get overwhelmed with crying. And you felt the catharsis - you felt it while watching Nassar cry at one of his victims describing the abuse he inflicted, and you DEFINITELY felt it during the sentencing.

Overall, I'd say Erin Lee Carr is the discovery of the month for me. Now let's get her to direct more things so I can watch them. :circle:

In a sort of dry run for A Star is Born later that decade, Fredric March is excellent here as a fragile alcoholic. Sylvia Sidney also does what she can, but it is a far less juicy part that often has her passively watching on as March becomes flirtatious and irresponsible as his drinking resumes. The ending does not really work either with the overall film never quite feeling like it ever hits the depths of addiction a la The Lost Weekend or Bigger Than Life.

20. I Love You, Now Die: The Defense (2019, Erin Lee Carr)

OK. I had to finish out her directorial films tonight, and she might be the first director for whom I've ever sought out to do this. She'll be on my favorite directors list next year for sure (currently, she'd rank in the low-40s for me, based on my rating methods).
I had the same reaction.

LOL, I told everyone about this documentary when I saw it [IRL] and got really crazy looks. Anyway, I loved Cannibal Cop. Was bizarre, but that's okay with me.

Overall, I'd say Erin Lee Carr is the discovery of the month for me. Now let's get her to direct more things so I can watch them. :circle:
These films sound pretty interesting. I already had Mommy Dead and Dearest watchlisted for the iCMFF, but the others sound pretty cool too.

Keen on shooting a porno, a lesbian filmmaker goes on a road trip across Argentina for inspiration in this self-aware meta-movie. There are some amusing moments as the characters talk about what would and would not work in a porno while essentially being a porno themselves with lots of graphic sexual activity. Alas, the characters are lifeless while the side scenes (an unloving husband; an oblivious mother) feel jarringly-tacked on.

A film about the debate over whether to divide British India into two countries (India and Pakistan) upon independence and where to draw the borders. It is a fairly engaging topic with millions of refugees created by dividing the land into separate Islamic and Hindu states and the sectioning of an East Pakistan (the area now known as Bangladesh). A lot of this is oddly sidelined though for a romance between locals and the viceroy arguing with his wife.

Boasting an unfaltering European accent, Jack Black provides what is perhaps his most dynamic performance after Bernie here as he constantly charms and reassures everyone who he cons, even the agent sent to investigate him. The film's choice to play things for laughs never quite works though, with the curious ambiguities regarding the protagonist (how much he realised the wrongfulness of his actions) undercut by the comedy treatment.

I've been putting off watching Amer for over a year because I wasn't that crazy about most of Cattet and Forzani's short films, but this was probably my favorite first time viewing of the month, until I saw Wanda.

There is less for John Malkovich to work with here as an older and more confident Tom Ripley, but he still turns in a solid performance, if one that stands in Matt Damon's shadow. The film benefits from a great Ennio Morricone score that sometimes seems to taunt the characters, and there are many intense moments throughout - particularly a train ride in which everything seems to go wrong. Maybe inferior The American Friend but still pretty good.

I'm a big fan of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley books, and of her books in general. She and Ripley have been well-served by the movies (Purple Noon is another one that is definitely worth checking out), with each of them playing to different strengths. Ripley's Game is my favorite. Malkovich is absolutely perfect as Ripley - forever plotting and amoral and self-centered to the core. What perfect casting - although Highsmith herself once said that Alain Delon was her image of Tom Ripley even before he was cast in Purple Noon.

I'm sure you know about Strangers on a Train, but Claude Chabrol's adaptation of Cry of the Owl from 1987 is also very worthwhile. Possibly a masterpiece.

Oh yes - I have seen (and liked) Purple Noon, but Minghella's film is still my favourite of the bunch. Young Tom Ripley is such a fascinating character to me and I really dug the personal identity quagmires that Matt Damon as the character found himself in, running back and forth while pretending to be other people, almost drowning in all of his manipulations, etc.

Have not seen Cry of the Owl, but Strangers on a Train is my 4th favourite Hitch film after the obvious three (Vertigo, Rear Window, Psycho).

Kathy Bates certainly gives it her all as Jay Leno's agent, yet the focus of this film constantly feels misplaced, with Bates receiving more screen time than either of the comedians as the film focuses less on the personalities of Leno and David Letterman and more on all the studio execs and agents arguing over contracts behind the scenes. The approach is understandable though as the film seems to argue that Leno and Letterman were just pawns.
