2020 Challenge Series and Awards

Welcome to the 2020 Official Challenge Series!

This is a fun and friendly competition based on the official challenges for 2020. Everyone is encouraged to participate as much (or as little) as they wish. We'll have an overall challenge competition for this year, as well as several awards you can earn along the way based on your participation in challenges. The overarching goal of this is to have fun and encourage everyone to expand their film knowledge by participating in the various official challenges.

There are a few changes from last year (details below). The first major change is to eliminate the custom writing, and report tables for folks to peruse at their leisure. The second major change is to drop some of the redundant awards that can be gleaned from the OP. If you have questions on the awards, just ask. Discussion thread.

How Does It Work?

Very simply, earn points by participating in challenges. Points are based on your rank for the challenge, and totaled across all challenges you've participated in. (Full details of the scoring can be found in the Official Challenges Leaderboard.) In addition, there will be various awards you can earn along the way for achieving certain milestones. Other advice:
  • Record your watches that fit each challenge, even if it's only 1 or 2
  • Scoring tends to reward breadth; 5 watches each in 3 challenges tends to be better than 15 watches in a single challenge
  • Pay attention to films that count for multiple challenges
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
Awards

Yes - there will be awards! Awards are based on participation in the challenges this year and achieving various milestones along the way. Just keep participating in challenges, and it's likely you'll earn quite a few of these along the way. Here are the awards:
  • Participation (AKA the "Christopher Lee") Award: How many challenges did you participate in*? Awarded in six levels, for participating in 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36 challenges.
    *5 films/challenge counts as participation.
  • X/X (AKA the "Beautiful Mind") Award: Awarded for watching X movies in X official challenges. There are 36 potential levels with this badge. Every challenge participant will earn at least the 1/1 level. But if you want to earn the highest level, you'd have to watch at least 36 movies in all 36 official challenges.
  • Top 5 Performance (AKA the "Oscar Nominees") Award: For placing in the top 5 of a challenge. Level up each time you achieve this (Max 36).
  • Obsessed Much? (AKA the "Adrian Monk") Award: For reaching the given threshold in a challenge. Level up each time you exceed the threshold (Max 36). Lower threshold: 36 watches in a single challenge. Upper threshold: 100 watches in a single challenge.
  • Triple/Double (AKA "Space Jam") Awards: Watch the most triples in a month? Award. Most doubles in a month? Another award. Level up to 12. Note: This is an "opt-in" award/challenge - to qualify, you must post your doubles and triples in The Triple Challenge - 2020 thread. No thresholds on this one.

2020's X/X Awards

Image

This award is for those people who have watched X movies for X official challenges. The first level is easy to obtain - every challenge participant will have watched at least 1 film for 1 official challenge. But each subsequent level is harder to achieve - Level Two is 2 films in each of 2 official challenges, Level Three is 3 films in each of 3 official challenges, Level Ten is 10 films watched in each of 10 official challenges, and so on.

This is my personal favorite award. It's hard to achieve some of those higher levels, and it's only going to get more interesting as the year goes on. Level 3 is the maximum possible award currently.

And there I was planning to ping you on Monday if you hadn't gotten around to this yet. tehe It looks like this new approach is a lot less work for you (without the individual write-ups, etc), so I think this is indeed the best way going forward. Something interesting though, which might be a first - none of the January Challenge winners are in the top 10 on the leaderboard.

Oh, and let me just momentarily bask in the glory while quoting...

This is quite a bit less work. By ignoring "levels" and avoiding call attention to people who actually moved up in favor of the "change" column, it'll be a lot more streamlined going forward, for sure.

And yeah, this is the breadth vs. depth issue. The tie at 13th place is really telling - psychotronicbeatnik, who had one of the all-time best single challenge performances of all time, is tied with ororama, who has less than 20% of psycho's total, but did it in three challenges. :circle:

Breadth indeed; I knew full well that I was the only user who got to 36 in three challenges by spreading my viewings across them in January. I had no idea that I was one of only two who had achieved more than one "Level 36" in January (and no, that's not going to happen this month, maybe not in any of the February Challenges, but I'll see what I can squeeze in).

Looking forward to the update for February. Please sing out if you need any help throwing things together. I'm back at work on Monday since the government here is adamant that schools will remain open no matter what, but nothing much else is open or viable with all the Covid-19 stuff, so I am pretty free this weekend if you need any help or assistance.

Honestly, I'm probably not going to have time/energy - life is... different now, and I need to focus efforts on things that will keep my wife and I a) alive, and b) employed.

Thanks, max. I'm a bit slow when it comes to excel, however, I finished inputting all of the data for the African Challenge and everything looks okay, so once I get around to entering the data for the other two busier challenges, I should be hopefully able to get something up here. :circle:

Hope everything's going for you and your wife. I guess I'm lucky to be an "essential services" field that will remain open even if the country technically goes into lockdown (sounds crazy but true). I have no idea how bad things are in Seattle, but here's to hoping that things improve some time soon. :)

 I wish was better at Excel. I've managed to update the leaderboard for the end of February by changing the data in max's first sheet then doing a "Refresh All" in the second sheet. Doing such a refresh in the other sheets doesn't change the data though, so I haven't been able to update any of the other awards (though stuff like Oscar nominations I could do manually at a pinch). Anyway, here's the leaderboard for the first two months of 2020:

How wonderful. jdidaco has exactly the same number of films watched and average ranking and has even won a challenge but is still trailing sol by 1 point. This scoring system is awesome :woot:

O yeah, thanks sol for taking over for now

Yeah, I noticed that. It doesn't matter much anyway since flavo is set to overtake both of us this month. :o (D:)

It didn't take me that long to enter in all the data (less than 90 minutes) so I can definitely keep doing this while maxwelldeux has other stuff going on. Not looking forward to November though when I might have to input data from the Horror Challenge. Hopefully things will smooth out for max by then!

I'll see what I can do with the rest of the awards. If max can point me in the right direction in terms of what is not working, I might be able to post the rest. If I'm doing things manually though, I think the only thing that I will be able to track without onerous extra work is Oscar Nominees.

Yay the scoring system!

On the spreadsheet, a couple things:
- Copying/pasting is your friend - as is the function "Text to Columns" on the Data tab in Excel (if you want to improve Excel skills, that's where I'd start) and will reduce the time you spend entering data.
- And I actually think things are working in the spreadsheet... the reason you didn't see things update in the other tabs is because a) when you hit "Refresh" on one table, they all update since they're all linked to the same data, and b) everything else is formula-based, so those numbers update automatically as new data are included. Go to the X-X tab and see if columns B-G have a 1 in them next to your name - if they do, all is well and you're updated.

You've actually done the hard part - most of the rest is just copying/pasting. For example, for OscarNom, copy columns A:C, paste them (as values) in K:M, sort by L (i.e., "Current") Descending, and you're ready to go - copy the table code in columns O:U and paste it on the forum (you may have to copy that table down a few extra rows). As a final step, copy columns K:M and paste them in F:H (this sets you up for next time, as the formula in column C looks in column G for that person's prior score). [The process is pretty similar for the other sheets; only Triple-Double is manual.]

That said, PM me with other questions. (and thanks for taking the lead on this!) :worship:

If it's not too much trouble sol, could you also post the rankings for just the three challenges in February. Pretty please :shifty:

Yeah, I don't know if I can. As in, I'm not sure how to do that without ruining the formula set-up in max's spreadsheet.

For the record, I am currently in a back-and-forth PM swap with max at the moment, sending him screenshots of the parts of the spreadsheet that I'm not sure about. Maybe I should hand this over to someone with better Excel skills than me (shugs comes to mind, but I wouldn't want to pressure him into it). Or maybe max can do all the rest if he has the free time since I have done the hard yakka of entering in the new data. But similarly, I don't want to pressure him.

If I can't figure out this Excel stuff, I'll post the Oscar nominees at least within 48 hours.

I have zero Excel skills. I use some scripts I wrote to generate challenge stats. I'll take a look at max's spreadsheet to see if I can code something up quick this week.

Haven't heard back from max in a while. This is the latest file including data added for February if anybody wishes to take a whirl at generating the other awards:

2020's X/X Awards

Image

This award is for those people who have watched X movies for X official challenges. The first level is easy to obtain - every challenge participant will have watched at least 1 film for 1 official challenge. But each subsequent level is harder to achieve - Level Two is 2 films in each of 2 official challenges, Level Three is 3 films in each of 3 official challenges, Level Ten is 10 films watched in each of 10 official challenges, and so on.

This is max's personal favorite favourite award. It's hard to achieve some of those higher levels, and it's only going to get more interesting as the year goes on. Level 6 is the maximum possible award currently.

According to max's spreadsheet, you only saw 3 films for the Balkans Challenge.

The Participation Award for 2020 is for participants who have seen 5+ films in a given challenge (see the paragraph I copy and pasted from max above).

Hmm. I'll investigate this tomorrow after work (and correct it manually if need be). Yes, I still have to go to work in this time of mass self-isolation. :/

Sorry, I can't do this.

Max has private messaged me with a possible fix to the problem with yourself and albajos but I really can't give any attention to this right now. It is getting more stressful by the day rocking up to work during this pandemic, especially given the shortages of hand santizer/soap and the impossibility of doing my job while remaining the recommended distance of 1.5m away from others.

April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Here's the leaderboard for the first three months of 2020. If I get some time later, I'll try to figure out again how to generate the other awards too, but at least I can post this relatively easily and in good time.

Thanks sol! I'm not doing any challenges this month so it looks like i will probably drop out of the top 20, maybe even the top 25. Oh well.

Do you think you could work your magic on the overall leader board as well? I don't think that's been updated for at least the last two months.
