This film gets off a neat start, beginning as a pseudo-documentary about the warehouse where the male protagonists (two heavy duty truck drivers) work; the rest of the film is more routine as far as road movies go but with a few surprises in store. There are some particularly intense points at which their truck seems at risk of falling off the side of steep cliffs, while the anecdotes (and bad kangaroo jokes) that the trio share are sometimes amusing.

On an expenses-paid (by the government) cruise but burdened by an extensive itinerary including prescribed bedtimes and cooking and cleaning left up to them, this could perhaps be read as an attack on the government maintaining control over its citizens even when on vacation, never providing a break. What else the film has to offer beyond this satire is unclear though, though there is a weird game that gives a whole new meaning to "spooning".

While there is a lot of melodrama at hand here, the dreamlike quality of the project makes it hard to pass up. From surreal flashbacks that plant trees inside apartment buildings, to window silhouettes illuminated by bright white light, to indeed shots in the rain as per the title, this is an incredibly good-looking film. Dusa Pockaj is also excellent in the lead female role balancing many insecurities that lead to her tragic and unhappy love life.

I could have chosen Ples v dežju for the first round of WC... but I decided to expand the knowledge of Slovenian cinema on this forum beyond a single damn film.

Absurd. There's a killer mermaid at a nazi concentration camp housed on an island. There was some gorgeous scenery, but that was the best of it. But they did make a really timely "I Know What You Did Last Summer" reference... almost 20 years later.

As a TV reporting team intrusively grill train passengers caught riding without a ticket, this Romanian drama begins well, but then soon turns into a romance between one of the reporters and one of the interviewees. While the pair have chemistry, the film is far more interesting when looking at the reporting side of things - filming a dog at a beach without permission for a television commercial; faking interest in interviewing a dolphin trainer, etc.

While the grim situation is pretty tragic and the film does its best to highlight the plight of women in (or more so, after) war, the highly theatrical treatment here feels entirely wrong. The overly poetic dialogue constantly comes across as unnatural and Katharine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave both act like they are in a stage play in which they have to make a lot of noise in order to be heard - but Geneviève Bujold is interesting as Cassandra.

This film is heavily invested in the sense of awe and mystery that the sea brings for a bunch of kids who steal a car to drive there, while surprises come as they find "water" (actually vodka), spare adult-sized clothes in the car and so on. The film awkwardly wedges conflict into the narrative though with the boys vying for the attention of the sole girl with some on-the-nose symbolism, but whenever it look at the kids longing for the sea it rarely missteps.

This is a hard film to become emotionally invested in at first as it keeps chopping and changing between three or four seemingly unrelated tales. As the stories begin to converge though, things become increasingly more engaging. Alas, while most of the tales connect up well, the most intriguing one - involving a bedridden man whose wife (and primary carer) unexpectedly dies - feels somewhat incongruent. Still, this is reasonably interesting stuff.

Two tales of Romanians trying to get rich quick are paralleled in this comedy. A middle aged tale is pretty good with shades of I, Daniel Blake as two men fall victim to a scam when using a computer for the first time. A youth tale is pretty silly though, involving a teenager who buys a raffle ticket and inexplicably uses a false name, leading to him spending the whole film trying to track down a man with the right surname to pretend to be his father.

This was the debut feature of Nae Caranfil, who would later go on to write and direct the amazing Philanthropy; by comparison, this is far less funny with less sharp satirical targets and less eccentric characters. This is written as something more serious than outright humorous though, and there are some potent bits and pieces as the trio look towards uncertain futures. Decent insight into military training too and how most of them still act like kids.

Courtship between two prospective couples (one adolescent; the other in their twenties) is paralleled in this curious film set in Ancient Greece. The youths are fascinating to watch whenever on screen; their story comes with lots of elongated silences and longing looks and stares in which body language communicates all, and the film is well worth a look for their plot alone. The adult actors are okay, but their plot is nothing extraordinary.

Thanks for the stats as always, and good to hear about the increased participation, though I should point out that you seem to have missed this post by Mario that would place him above me in the leader-board.

I don't know. I would have expected Greece to have a cake walk this challenge. Almost half those Romanian viewings are from myself alone. Soon I will have seen more Romanian films than shugs. tehe

A question though: would you be able to add a fourth "Country Leader?" column to the leader-board, like blocho does with his challenges? And no, I'm not just asking because I want to boast about how much I have seen from Romania (ahem); I'm interested in seeing how others are going at a glance. Or maybe you could do this just where the leader has seen 10 or more films if you don't want to clog up the leaderboard. I don't know. No idea how messy this would look with all of Mario's leads.

Oh, and since you know that I am going to ask it, do you know if any films have been seen 3 or more times in this Challenge?

Wow. Right from the opening scene in which the title character is attacked in her sleep, this is a living, breathing nightmare that never lets up as we go inside the mental headspace of a scared woman. From silhouettes of strangers peeking in her windows, to ominous messages passed under her front door, to her inability to get through to certain bureaucratic services on the phone, the film feel like pure and undiluted Kafkaesque paranoia.

10. Domestic (2012) Romania

An anthology movie of sorts with some tales more interesting than others. The first is arguably the best, involving a young girl whose parents pay her to slaughter a hen for dinner; in fact, most of the other episodes drag. The choice to shoot the film with mostly long takes is iffy at best; it is absolutely painful to watch a young boy sit for minutes on end at a Christmas lunch, upset over a rabbit being killed for their meal. A film to test your patience.

And with that, I'm now in the unexpected situation where both the best and worst films that I have seen in 2020 are from Romania.
Fast-forward two and half weeks later, and I can now say that both the best and worst films that I have seen in 2020 are from Greece.

A horror-themed gothic melodrama. Shot on location in Romania with baroque sets and atmospheric lighting, the film certainly looks decent; as a narrative tough, it brings little new to the table and the protagonist's constant mournful narration quickly tires. The treatment here is also pretty close to soap opera, and while this is curious as a precursor to Twilight and the like, the action is consequently limited and the horror even more so.

Second Third Stats & Update

Through the first ~2/3 of the Balkans challenge this month, we have 16 so far (+5) and are always looking for more. Mario and sol are duking it out for first place
Thanks for the stats as always, and good to hear about the increased participation, though I should point out that you seem to have missed this post by Mario that would place him above me in the leader-board.

Country stats aren't too surprising...
- 33: Romania
- 29: Greece

Thanks for pointing out the scoring error - I had gotten that post you mentioned, but had copy/paste errors on a couple others. My spreadsheet now matches Mario's last post.

Fair point, too, on the country stats. I just wasn't at all surprised which two countries popped up as #1 and #2.

Let me think on the added column... if I can automate it, I will.

And my text-based storing of films is not ideal to answer your question, so I haven't tried (especially with multiple languages). Best I can see is that Barierata, Infinite Football, and Variola Vera have been watched twice. Nothing three times.

Mostly shot from inside a moving van, this is a remarkably intense motion picture focused on a small town youth who is hired to drive a mysterious package into the city. Nothing especially remarkable happens during the first 30 minutes, but then an unexpected event around a third of the way in gives an entirely new edge to the friends' journey, making it more of a paranoia-ridden thriller than the amiable road movie that it initially seems to be.

I need some soap for this GreeceShow
1. Infinite Football (2018, Romania)
2. One Fine Day (1962, Yugoslavia)
3. Wild Growth (1963, Yugoslavia)
4. Nymph (2014, Serbia)
5. The Show Must Go On (2010, Croatia) [double]
This film is about a reality show competition where six couples are locked in a bunker for six months, do reality show things, and are subsequently eliminated. Except WW3 breaks out. And they are locked in there to keep the show going for a sense of normalcy for everyone in Croatia. But it's more about the people on the outside and what they have to do to survive in a world that's crumbling around them. Really interesting film and paced quite well, maintaining interest and action for its 80m run time and building tension throughout. Really enjoyable.

Also finally added a second person to the Croatia leaderboard (or will when I update it).

OK time to get this out there. Intended to put more into this challenge but looks like I'm not, oh well. Concentrating almost entirely on earlier Greek cinema.

1. Alexis Zorbas / Zorba the Greek (Michael Cacoyannis, 1964, GREECE)

Started with this because it happened to be on TCM, and it sort of got me off on the wrong foot with Cacoyannis; I think I might have liked this a little more had I watched it after the others I've now seen, as this came off as really misogynist and ugly to me, when the three earlier films that I saw later appear if not overtly feminist then at least highly critical of the macho stupid behavior we see on display throughout this film. Then again I think this is sort of trying to have it both ways - clearly not on the side of what happens to the widow played by Irene Papas, but also very willing to forgive the many trespasses of the over-the-top title character, played with the usual gusto by who else but Anthony Quinn. I generally like Quinn a lot but I really couldn't take Zorba, and Alan Bates' character is too weak and too willing to be led on by this guy to be sympathetic either. Which leaves the several mistreated women, some of whom seem to deserve more even in the context of this fictional film, to my mind. Plus it's WAY too fucking long. Still it looks nice, the music's good, and Papas and the Oscar winning Lila Kedrova leave big impressions in small roles.

2. Dafnis Hai Hloi / Daphnis and Chloe (Orestis Laskos, 1931, GREECE)

I don't use "dated" as a perjorative very often but it probably applies here. This is a really dull silent retelling of a 2000-year-old Greek novel, with a storyline that's been used, adapted, critiqued, etc, over and over through the centuries - I felt I knew it certainly - about a Romeo/Juliet type thwarted love, where the boy can't marry the girl because she's poor, she can't marry him for the same reason, but they both find out that of course they have special parentage, the Gods smile on them, etc. Notable for being an early film with nude scenes but that's the extent of the interest - extremely stagy and wooden acting and storytelling throughout.

3. Prosopa lismonimena / Forgotten Faces (Yorgos Tzavellas, 1946, GREECE)

This started out well, with a sort of noirish feel at first as a no-account loser comes back to Athens after years in America and seeks out an old flame - but though there are some interesting crime (blackmail) elements throughout, overall the film is overwhelmed by melodrama which to my taste really hurts the central story of the middle-aged woman trying both to reunite with her daughter - who doesn't know her, being given up to her father when she was young while mother was cast out - and get away from the clutches of the "old flame" turned irredeemable monster. Not bad but feels a bit unsure of what it wants to be.

4. Magiki polis / Magic City (Nikos Koundouros, 1954, GREECE)

Another crime story, this one posits the "Magic City" as both a big amusement arcade, and of course the magical city of Athens - the downtown, shiny, expensive city which the characters on the margins can only dream about. Our main character Kosmas owns a truck, a rare thing, by which he makes his living as a hauler, and is torn between working with shady importers, likely smugglers, and trying to be honest but maybe lose the vehicle to the bank - and also torn between two women, the good girl and the whore basically. Familiar story but well told and with a pretty good chase sequence at the end.

5. Stella (Michael Cacoyannis, 1955, GREECE)

Also a good girl / bad girl story, or so it seems at first, with two singers - good girl Anetta and bad girl Stella (Melina Mercouri in a star-making role) vying for the attentions of nice guy Alekos - but Anetta can't catch his eye, and Stella can, but wants to remain her own woman. What I liked the most about this is how Stella goes from seeming to be a catty, slutty bitch at first to a real independent, proto-feminist heroine over the course of the film, which makes the last act when things turn sour with her new and more glamorous love quite powerful and poignant. This was where I first noticed Cacoyannis' repeated visual motif of a long shot with the two main character separated at ends of the frame, portending something final, or tragic, or violent - I think this recurs in all three of the 50s films I watched in a similar manner near the end.

6. Istoria mias kalpikis liras / The Counterfeit Coin (Yorgos Tzavellas, 1955, GREECE)

While the first segment in this roundelay film about a counterfeit gold sovereign (presented often in gold tint in an otherwise b/w film), in which we meet the maker of the coin and those who influenced him in it's creation, does go on a bit, overall I found this pretty delightful, if fairly typical in it's messages that money doesn't buy happiness, that people are more important than possessions, etc. The story about the beggar and the hooker is the most amusing, the one about the girl (Elli Lambeti, an incredible presence here and in the two Cacoyannis films she made over the next couple of years) from a rich family who marries the poor and uncompromising painter is the most emotionally resonant.

7. O drakos / The Ogre of Athens (Nikos Koundouros, 1956, GREECE)

The best film I've seen so far in this challenge, this is a mistaken identity story that again has some noir-like characteristics - in fact it's listed as noir in some sources - but is ultimately a tragedy of the powerless and lonely just wanting a little slice of the pie and being denied even that. The "ogre" or "dragon" is apparently a powerful criminal - we never see him, but we do see a meek little bank clerk who looks just like him, and who takes a short ride to hell because of this mistake. What I liked most about this was that it's quite easy to imagine that there is no real "dragon", that he's just a story made up by the cops, or by the criminals, for political ends; and I liked the element of fooling oneself, as our man gets a taste of being the big man, knows it's going to go wrong, but... a moth to the flame. This is hard to describe, it's a film of expressions and emotions on faces and shadows, but it's memorable enough to warrant a place in my mind and a return trip some day.

8. To koritsi me ta mavra / A Girl in Black (Michael Cacoyannis, 1956, GREECE)

Elli Lambeti

is the title girl in black, pursued relentlessly by numerous macho assholes in her small town, while her brother rages against their mother, a widow who is unwilling to stay celibate and alone in their decaying old mansion. But an Athenian writer comes to stay a week, and everything changes for the whole village, and the macho assholes get a certain quite unforeseen comeuppance. The tragedy that forms the third part of this film seems a little contrived and movie-ish in a way, but it's well executed and doesn't diminish too much the power of the story overall, of women's powerlessness and good men's weakness.

9. To teleftaio psemma / A Matter of Dignity (Michael Cacoyannis, 1958, GREECE)

Lambeti is back, this time as a rich Athenian girl set to marry a much richer man, but falling in love with a middle class antiques dealer. Or so the one-line writeup would say - there's a lot more here as we soon find that Lamberti's family isn't as wealthy as they pretend to be, and -- a nice reversal of the bitch-turned-heroine in Stella - Lamberti's Chloe turns out to be not so much better than the rich snobs that she pretends to despise at the beginning of the film. Like the previous director-actress pairing this has a tragic denouement that's a little over-the-top, but the emotional last scene works quite well regardless.

A bizarre Greek reworking of Otto Preminger's Laura, which may be better appreciated with the classic fresh in mind. Still the film leaves an indelible impact as the PI protagonist is caught in a strange power play between a woman and a girl hired to play her daughter. Shot in stark black and white, the imagery is very out-there and boundary-pushing, making for an elaborate cautionary tale for the dangers of probing too far in search of someone.
