6. Beloved (1998) - 8/10 - Not having read the novel probably helped with this one, found it to be a very evocative exploration of the massive American (but not only American) trauma of slavery. I do think there are enough supernatural elements here to count as Fantasy, but I guess that's debatable.
7. Tenki no ko (2019) - 5/10 - Your Name with super-bland characters and a very muddled environmental message. Beautiful animation though.

15. Trancers (Charles Band, 1984) (re-watch)
16. Trancers II (Charles Band, 1991)
17. Trancers III (C. Courtney Joyner, 1992)
18. The Last Sentinel (Jesse V. Johnson, 2007)

This is on a 4-movie 2-disc el cheapo set that I've had for years - probably got it for $2 at Goodwill, I'm sure I never would have paid full price for it. I watched one of the others a year or two ago and it was among the very worst modern SF films I've seen, so I had no expectations going into this. Well, I can at least say it's not as bad as that film, or plenty of other crap I've seen in the digital era, but it's not good either. It stars martial artist Don "The Dragon" Wilson, who was a 2nd tier action star in the late 80s and 90s - same period as Seagal, Van Damme, etc, but this is the first film I've seen him in as lead despite a fair interest in action crap of 25 years ago; I guess I never got as low on the totem pole as he was. Anyway, he's not that bad - wooden, but he's supposed to be here as a sort of cyborg, last of his kind man-weapon fighting off even more inhuman cyborgs, with the help of the all-human Katee Sackhoff, who's also perfectly OK. Problem is the script is inane, it's a terribly boring and repetitive and highly derivative "what if AI takes over" post-apocalypse scenario, and it's very cheap and ugly. Shocked to find that this was filmed in 35, it has all the hallmarks of early and low-grade digital. Maybe just a poor transfer. Anyway, it's not irredeemably bad but not anywhere close to good either.

19. Deja Vu (Tony Scott, 2006)

I've metamorphosed from a T Scott hater into a T Scott -- well, fan is too strong. Into someone tolerant of his work and able to enjoy some of his less stupid crap, I guess. This one is enjoyable overall even if it is pretty damn stupid. It starts out with Denzel Washington investigating a ferry explosion in the harbor of New Orleans that we know immediately and he knows pretty quickly was deliberate, and eventually it turns into a time-travel gimmick with him trying to figure out how to save the boat and in particular one passenger who is of course a totally gorgeous babe (Paula Patton). It's reasonably entertaining, and I can tolerate Scott's visuals better than Michael Bay's at least, though he does have the same obsession with a constantly moving camera even when it's silly and even damaging to making visual sense of a scene; but the time travel stuff is just utterly stupid, par for the course I suppose. It also suffers from one of my major pet peeves - they make a big deal out of setting it in NOLA, several references to Katrina, they obviously shot most of the exteriors there, but not one fucking member of the principal cast is from the South and they don't even bother to try any accents at all. Why not set it in LA if you're going to be so lazy?

20. The Andromeda Strain (Robert Wise, 1971) (re-watch)

I'm sure it's been 15-20 years since I last saw this scientists-trying-to-stop-a-killer-virus-from-space epic - I think I'd seen it twice before - and I remembered it fondly, but this really didn't live up to the memories. That first sentence is really all you need to know - satellite crashes to earth, kills most everybody in a small desert town, and top scientists are flown in from around the country to a top-secret underground lab, equipped with it's own nuclear destruct mechanism which trust me will come into the plot later. Not only reminiscent of Gog which I wrote about above but several other stop-the-epidemic films from the previous couple of decades, notably 1965's The Satan Bug. This suffers from taking too long to get going - too much mumbo-jumbo about contamination and all the various steps the scientists have to go through before getting down to work at the lowest level of the bunker, and from a rather bland, if competent cast, but it's overall still fairly exciting and the production design is nice.

21. Riders to the Stars (Richard Carlson/Herbert Strock, 1954)

Actor Carlson's first film as director - he also co-stars as the rather asinine member of a group of prospective astronaut/scientists recruited to give the ol' USA a leg up on those damn Commies - though this is fairly light on the anti-red rhetoric. This develops a romance and some nice camaraderie early on, with the bored future spacemen sitting around waiting to see which ones will get picked, but the fairly pitiful effects (even for this period - though the film is in color, so you'd think there'd be a budget for them) and the predictable ending really bring it down. Meh.

22. The Land Unknown (Virgil W. Vogel, 1957)

It's worthwhile to read the trivia bout this - apparently it was originally going to be in color, and be handled by Jack Arnold, a bigger-name SF director, but studio politics or finances got in the way and it was made on the cheap in b/w - but still in Cinemascope, a somewhat unusual combination - by the lesser name Vogel. I didn't know that before I watched it, but I could sense at times that there was a "bigger" film here than what we get to see - the sets and matte paintings in this fairly typical lost world story, set in an unknown warm valley in Antarctica, are pretty top-flight actually, and it's got a decent cast, with Henry Brandon as the bitter explorer trapped alone for years in the antideluvian world the standout. There's nothing new here really for anyone familiar with this sort of thing, but it's reasonably well done.

23. The Monster That Challenged the World (Arnold Laven, 1957)

Another giant monster movie. This time it's a big mollusk - looks like a giant larva actually - living in the Salton Sea in California, which kills a couple of military guys in a boat and then spreads terror through --- well, mostly a couple of canals and a scientist's lab. The use of real locations adds a lot to this, it's a part of the southwest we don't see too often in film and of course most SF films from this period are primarily studio-bound, and Hans Conreid in a rare "straight" role as the main scientist is a lot of fun to watch. I didn't know he could play non-comedic roles but he's solid, as is Tim Holt - looking much more than 15 years older than his Magnificent Ambersons self - as the main army guy in charge. Better than average monster movie from this era for sure.

My favorite Jonathan Demme film. I actually had read the novel, not long before I saw the film in the cinema, and I loved it - saw it twice. Oprah should've had some nominations that year, maybe her career would have gone in a different direction, oh well. And yeah, it could count as fantasy, or horror.

17. Our Man Flint (Mann, 1966)
Interesting how several aspects of the plot of this sixties Bond parody/homage/rip-off was lifted for the first Austin Powers movie. Some great psychadelic production design, but suffers from weak humour plus sluggish direction and editing that don't really deliver exciting action.

This horror film benefits from an intriguing premise with some mystery as to what exactly the robbers are up to. Alas, the film's title spells out most of what is going on (the working title of Supermarket would have been a lot more effective). The project also goes for gooey effects as opposed to playing up the ambiguity as to whether the robbers know what they are doing or are simply delusional. The twist ending is foreshadowed from a mile away too.

This film does well early on juxtaposing different events depending on whether or not she then catches her boyfriend cheating on her. The novelty wears out quite quickly though and with her happiness in both timelines dependent on the men who she is with and nothing else, the potential for more is striking. John Hannah is charming and a melancholic Gwyneth Paltrow is effective in the lead, but this is more sentimental than thoughtful stuff.

This venture changes things up with a female protagonist and less macho supporting characters. While these changes are refreshing, the film cannot quite compare to Carpenter's version (or even the 1951 original). The best thing about the 1982 film was a sense of mistrust with constant uncertainty of who is the thing. There is a very intense scene in which the scientists inspect each other's fillings, but this is mostly a series of alien attacks.

Far better than one might expect for a third entry in a horror franchise, this loose sequel actually begins similarly to Cube with its characters awakening in a strange jungle with no memory of how they got there. There is also a creepy part early on in which one victim's cries for help are still heard after he is mercy-killed. The film is a bit uneven after its strong opening, but intriguing ethical questions arise - is it better "to be human" or just "alive" etc.

39. Contamination (1980, Luigi Cozzi): 6.8 - This movie about alien eggs contaminating people, who explode afterwards, is clearly heavenly influenced by Alien. It gets its strength mostly from being a simple story told in a brisk pace, which make this enjoyable enough to distract from its lesser aspects.
40. Alien 2 - Sulla terra [Alien 2: On Earth] (1980, Ciro Ippolito): 4.0 - Where the previous movies was just influenced by Alien, this one has the balls to proclaim itself an (unofficial) sequel (like Fulci did with Zombi 2). Unfortunate it waste way too much time on inconsequential scenes till it gets to the monster. And even then the bad parts outnumber the good.... or rather the still poor, but slightly enjoyable, ones. Kudos tho for shooting it mostly on location in a cave.
41. 2019 - Dopo la caduta di New York [2019 - After the Fall of New York] (1983, Sergio Martino): 7.5 - This mash-up of influences of Mad Max 2 and Escape from New York is an Italian scifi B-movie well-done. The lower budget still shows, mostly in the clear cheap location shootings. But it is highly enjoyable and does what it has to do very well.
42-47. The Mandalorian - Season 1 (2019): 8.2

23. The Monster That Challenged the World (Arnold Laven, 1957)
24. Star Trek - Original Series - s1 ep1 "The Man Trap"
25. Star Trek - Original Series - s1 ep2 "Charlie X"
26. Star Trek - Original Series - s1 ep3 "Where No Man Has Gone Before"

Re-watches, though it's been many, many years since I've seen any of these, and watching them now in HD is almost like a first-time viewing. This show did not exactly start off at the top - one thing I noticed (not being at all a serious fan and not having read up on the show really) is how they play around with the cast early one; Kirk and Spock are the only reliable members of the crew in every episode, with McCoy missing in episode 3, no Scotty until that episode, no Sulu in episode 1. Maybe Uhuru is in all of them but she has minimal screen time. They also play around with uniform colors - Spock is in the command colors in episode 3, science/medical in the other two, and the command color varies between an ugly green and an orangish brown. Lots of other little details that they played around with also, but the cast - always the most important and effective element in this series - is really what I miss.

As to the stories - well, I find most ST episodes fairly mediocre in that area, and these three are particularly lackluster. The first involves a salt-eating monster that can take the shape of anybody, and the second and third are both about men who become all-powerful godlike beings that threaten the enterprise, though they are defeated in very different ways. The show was at it's best when it was more human-scaled and less gimmicky and in these early episodes it's playing more to the high-concept ideas that rarely come across well.

27. The Stone Tape (Peter Sasdy, 1972)

Like the much more famous Quatermass films and TV serials from writer Nigel Kneale, this low-budget TV movie combines horror and science fiction elements in a very interesting way, bringing to the fore psychic resonance and ESP powers in some ways similar to what we see in Quatermass and the Pit. It's a really solid film overall, though I think it comes down a bit in the ending, and it's refreshing to have a female lead (Jane Asher, really good here) in a genre film from this era who isn't just a pretty face - in fact she's the computer programmer for the group - and who is in fact the most competent and most correct in her assessments of the ghostly presence haunting an old manor where a technical team is trying to create some kind of new recording medium to compete with the Japanese (hence the "stone tape" title). Not as good as the last Quatermass film but to my taste as good as or better than the first two. Now I have to get around to watching the serials.

28. Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (Gerry Lively, 2005)

Not often that a sequel gets a rating 3 points higher from me than the original film; unfortunately in this case the original is godawful and rated a 2. Still, this is *almost* worth watching, at least for D&D fans who want a film that actually gets a lot of the action and rules "right". Bruce Payne is the only returning cast member from the first film, as the bad guy Damodar again, and it's a welcome return though I don't recall if the character is really the same in anything other than name. Once again there's a big ol' dragon that threatens a town and we have a small group that have to perform a quest to get something that will defeat it, yadda yadda yadda. It's at least slightly involving, the acting for the most part is... OK... and the plotting isn't bad; where it really falls down is in the FX and production desigin - the film had a budget only a quarter of the first film's already low (for this kind of film) $40-50 million, and the CGI dragons and other monsters are really pitiful here. Oh well, it took me back to my gaming days in a way that the first film didn't, and I give it a little credit for that.

29. Tenki no ko / Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai, 2019) (cinema)

There were moments that I really loved, and there wasn't much that I disliked, but this latest fantasy-romance doesn't come close to the level of Kimi no na wa. It's too cluttered and focused on characters away from the main couple for a 2-hour film I think; there are moments where I wondered if he hadn't planned a much longer, sprawling epic sort of work with even more of the environmental concerns and more of the Sunshine Girl mythology. That might be something really special. As it is, I liked it - I dig everything I've seen from Shinkai and his particular romanticism/sentimentality fits in well with my own - but I didn't love it.

30. The Cosmic Man (Herbert S. Greene, 1959)

Super-cheap reworking of The Day the Earth Stood Still. An impenetrable and immovable egg-like ship appears in a canyon after being seen flying all over the place at 50 miles per second (!), and scientist Bruce Bennett among others goes to investigate. Soon there are strange sightings of a shadowy figure around the nearby town, and an odd heavily wrapped-up man (John Carradine) takes a room at the lodge run by the attractive widow who has a crippled science-obsessed son. Is he The Cosmic Man? Is he up to help humanity, or destroy it! You'll figure it out more quickly than the film will tell you I"m sure, but the message remains a good one and Bennett and Carradine - and Carradine's voice especially - make this moderately enjoyable. Interesting note: at one point the alien is called a "cosmonaut" - this was 2 years before Yuri Gagarin's first flight, and I wonder how commonly that term was known in the USA at the time?

If you haven't already, make you leave some time to watch Night of the Demon (1980) a.k.a. the one where Bigfoot rips a guys dick off!
That one was already on my watchlist but I'll move it higher up and make more of an effort to see it just for that. Have you seen Search For the Beast? It has some gratuitous definitely non-PC footage of Bigfoot "doing" a woman from behind that is wonderfully ridiculous.

FTV:3:The Gamma People (1956) 8

Thanks to JD for rec.

Stranding Wilson and Meade in a small country which they can't figure it how they arrived, appears not to be on a map, and is impossible to leave, co-writer/(with Robert Aldrich/Louis Pollock and John W. Gossage) director John Gilling & cinematographer Ted Moore touch on the eerie, isolating Sci-Fi atmosphere of the 60's The Prisoner TV show, thanks to stylish wide-shots scanning the sparsely populated village/country, where shops that serve no purpose (such as a telegraph shop) are open and pretending to do business.

Giving Meade and Wilson a warm welcome in John Box's surreal, exotic art design, Gilling wonderfully runs into the direction he would later take with Plague of the Zombies, in the leader of the country having a brainwashed, zombie gang to do his bidding, with Gilling treading on a Horror atmosphere in frantic tracking shots following the zombies sniffing out suspicious locals in the woods like hounds. Targeting gamma rays at the inner workings of the country, the writers brilliantly twist allegorical Sci-Fi of everyone fearing to speak out in a Eastern European-style country, with a unsettling, seeping chill from Meade (a debonair Leslie Phillips) and Wilson (a great, agitated Paul Douglas) finding the locals trying to normalise the situation, leading to Wilson and Meade taking on the Gamma People.

With its utterly ridiculous plot and even more ridiculous computer graphics, this is by no means a great motion picture, yet the film is made very watchable by a lively Russell Crowe at his utmost energetic. Whether it be somersaulting wherever possible or greedily eating glass to regenerate, Crowe gives an unrestrained and over-the-top performance that is mesmerising to view; he even get his own Saturday Night Fever spoof at one point.

Hm... I haven't seen that one but it sounds like The Geek which is an actual bigfoot rape porno from the '70s. Although I still haven't worked up the nerve to watch that one yet either...

Anyone interested in a fan-made Legend of Zelda film that plays like a LARPing session of community college theater students with fake British accents and a Goron that just a big guy with dirt on his face? Yea, pretty much everyone, right? But seriously, I'm gonna have to put this one below the fan-made MegaMan film, but it's still surprisingly competent despite all the budget and talent issues.

On a cinematic level, this is certainly fairly well done with spirited choreography, memorably grisly revenge scenes and some great bits in which Brandon Lee gets to taunt his victims to-be, occasionally hanging from the roof. Beneath the technical prowess though, this feel like a run-of-mill vigilante film through and through, only lacking the gradual transformation to vigilante of something like Death Wish and ridiculous Joker style makeup.

28. Chopping Mall (1986)

Curiously released only months before RoboCop, this horror film plays out like a feature length version of the board room meeting in which the ED-209 goes haywire. While its satire is not quite a sharp as RoboCop's, the film treats the idea with a lot of deliciously dark humour; "smoking's bad for your health" comes in a cutaway after a janitor is left frying by a robot on the floor. Alas, 90% of the film is just teenagers trying to blow robots up.
Don't ask why/how, but I just realized that, in Chopping Mall, Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov reprised their roles as the Blands, which they established in Eating Raoul (and that's a much better film than Chopping Mall, sol, if you haven't seen it, though I prob need to rewatch CM).
