16. China. Qi Huan Zhi Lv / Super Me, by Zhang Chong (2019) 5/10

Some nice ideas, but also a very messy plot, and a poorly directed picture overall...

17. United Kingdom. Theater of Blood, by Douglas Hickox (1973) 7,5/10

Vincent Price certainly seems to have fun in this hilarious comedy... I did too...

18. Russia. Papa, sdokhni / Why don't you just die ? by Kirill Sokolov (2018) 8,5/10

Great direction, a comical tone, but also an interesting undertone and a remarkable precision.

19. Latvia. Koirat eivät käytä housuja / Dogs don't wear pants, by J.-P. Valkeapää (2019) 7/10

An unusual love story, or mutual self-destruction, in the world of of BDSM.

16. Autumn Sonata (Sweden, 1978)
Of all the Bergman movies I have seen, this is the most emotionally draining, more so than Cries and Whispers or Wild Strawberries. A master class in familial recrimination, it feels very much apiece with the themes that Bergman spent his career exploring. That it break no new ground for him does not detract from its power. In any other hands, the emotions would curdle into farce or bathos. The success of the movie is built on the acting, especially that of Liv Ullman, who has an outburst here of such pain and resentment that I have never seen anything comparable. That the scene remains genuine rather than histrionic is testament to her talent.

Very loosely based on the Marquis de Sade's time in prison, this black comedy features cover-up conspiracies, jail breaks and stolen goods, while our humble protagonist simply wants to write his infamous, obscene stories in peace. He also has frequent conversations with his animatronic manhood. The film never quite amounts to the thoughtful baser urges/deeper intelligence dichotomy that it attempts to be, but this is zany and engaging stuff.

Artificial intelligence's evolution is debated here. The film is divided into distinct sections that vary in effectiveness, with robot art being the least interesting. The driver-less cars section is awesome though with curious intricacies (A.I. programmed to protect human life might kill its driver to save pedestrians), the sex robots is fun and some parts are simply funny, like the cut to a stuck robot vacuum cleaner after talk about robots taking over.

17. Parasite (South Korea, 2019)
My parents both hated this movie, which was reason enough for me to see it. So let me state at the outset, that I decided several years ago to leave behind the old good/bad paradigm when it comes to movies. My new paradigm is interesting/uninteresting, and this movie certainly kept my interest. All that being said, I can't help but think that there's a lot less here than meets the eye, and it seems apiece with Bong's other work, especially Snowpiercer. I've watched Snowpiercer three times, mostly because I like action movies and I like post-apocalyptic movies, but also because the movie left me feeling adrift the first couple of times I saw it. It's a testament to Bong's ability to enmesh sociopolitical elements in his work that it took me three viewings to feel like I have a grip on what he's saying in that movie, which is not much. At heart, Bong is a satirist and a purveyor of dark comedy, and in its invocation of class struggle, Snowpiercer ultimately becomes not a metaphorical statement about social class but rather a satire of movies that make metaphorical statements about social class. Bong's politics and beliefs are opaque, and while I respect an artist who feels that revealing too much lessens the impact of his work, sometimes an artist simply has little to say. In Snowpiercer and Parasite, I think Bong is doing something worse--he's deploying the idiom of social critique for empty amusement. Parasite, as the title suggests, should be a Hegelian movie. The parasitism of the poor on the rich and the rich on the poor perfectly encapsulates the dynamics of the master-slave dialectic. But good luck finding anything so meaningful in this movie. Instead, all we get is a panoply of class strife signifiers arrayed around a domestic thriller. It was all mildly interesting.

This Oscar nominated documentary looks at local rangers who work to conserve Congo's gorilla population while their country is ravished by foreign corporations with vested interests. The film benefits from some beautiful sunsets, misty mountain vistas and aerial shots that sweep over the African nation; the agenda, however, is a little all over the place (the gorillas actually do not feature very much) but a curious insight into Congo's history.
