This indie documentary looks at genetically modified foods and questions whether they are doing more harm than good. It is a curious topic, but director Jeremy Seifert makes the film too much about his children with an overload of home video footage and some ridiculous set pieces like running with his kids through a GM cornfield in head-to-toe protective gear. The secrecy and lack of transparency with big corporations is interesting though.

114. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2003)
This is actually a pretty touching story in places of a homeless guy who takes befriends a flock of parrots in San Francisco. It's both adorable and a little heartbreaking in places. I would heartily recommend it for animal lovers for sure.

Image
115. Mondo Freudo (1966)
One of many mondo flicks from the 60's, this one amps up the luridness by focusing on the sex trades. So we get glimpses of "private clubs", "art shows", strip clubs, prostitution and others in such exotic locales as New York, London, Tijuana and of course Las Vegas. While it seems on the surface that this has no educational value, it is actually a little interesting to learn about the various laws regarding public nudity and sex work and how go-getting entrepreneurs find creative ways to circumvent the laws.

ImageImage
116a. Hanoi, martes 13 (1968)
116b. Piedra sobre piedra (1970)
A pair of essay films from Santiago Alvarez, the first basically is footage filmed and spliced together in Hanoi, North Vietnam on Dec. 13, 1967 and is essentially communist propaganda. The second is a very short doc showing the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. Santiago Alvarez in general isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but he does have an interesting taste for excellent music and a novel editing style that presages music videos by a decade.

116c. Ulysse (1983)
Another peculiar but somehow delightful Agnes Varda doc, this one focuses on a photo she took years ago or a naked man standing on a beach looking toward the sea near a boy and a dead goat. She basically wants to understand why she is so fascinated with this photo and seeks out the parties involved to get their takes on it. I almost always find Varda films to be very engaging compared to many of her peers in the French New Wave yet she never seems to get the credit deserved that others such as Godard (who I find mostly insufferable) and Truffaut (who I generally like but feels a little over-praised in comparison). Watch Varda, folks! Love life!

Had you already been avoiding GMOs or now are you planning to avoid GMOs? Just wondering. I have been avoiding GMOs for about 3 years now and this documentary was preaching to the choir a little bit, but I thought it was important.

What are your takeaways from this one? I haven't seen it, but I read some stories about the case as it unfolded. I'm a free speech sympathizer and a near absolutist when it comes to self-ownership (including right to die), so my biases should be obvious.

117. I Like to Hurt People (1985)
A doc following the wrestler The Sheik and his penchant for sensationalist violence back in the halcyon days of professional wrestling. It's all very silly but there's still a certain bit of nostalgia to see guys like Andre the Giant and Jake the Snake in action.

Image
118. Sex and Death to the Age 14 (1982)
A filming of the first monologue Spaulding Gray wrote, it's easy to see even in his very first one why he was such a force for insight and entertainment. It's an often hilarious and even poignant story of his coming of age learning of sex through a series of awkward situations that shows why Gray is a master of the spoken word.

Image
119. Scream Greats, Vol. 1: Tom Savini, Master of Horror Effects (1986)
Good ol' Tom Savini. Here's a profile of him doin' his thang once again. Although since he's the focus, it goes into more detail on the man himself than several docs I've seen this month that primarily showcased some of his effects work including his childhood as well as his acting career and even his experiences directing. It's a solid watch for horror fans.

Image
120. Mondo Bizarro (1966)
Another seedy mondo flick, this one is similar to Mondo Freudo (and including on the same disc appropriately) showcasing sleaze and nastiness around the world (although that's debatable...). Also like Mondo Freudo, some of this footage seems to obviously be staged (especially the dressing room footage at the beginning... that Arab sex slave auction looks pretty suspect too...). With these mondo movies, you pretty much know whether you're going to enjoy them or not.

Image
121. Xianshi shi guoqu de weilai a.k.a. Disorder (2009)
According to IMDB, this footage was captured by various people on the scene of various incidents including traffic problems (animals on the highway?) and horrifyingly a baby left on the side of the road (onlookers debate whether to just leave it there...). I found it to be more anxiety-inducing than anything else to be honest.

Marketed as "The Sustainability Secret", this documentary looks at the benefits of veganism from an economical and environmental rather than ethical point-of-view. Many of the ideas are fascinating, such as that all the grain used to feed livestock around the world would be enough to feed every human on the planet. I found the film most intriguing as a conspiracy theory piece though and I didn't feel like this angle was that well fleshed out.

23-24. I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter (2019) 8/10 HBO has this split up into 2 episodes. I can change it to counting as one if necessary.
What are your takeaways from this one? I haven't seen it, but I read some stories about the case as it unfolded. I'm a free speech sympathizer and a near absolutist when it comes to self-ownership (including right to die), so my biases should be obvious.
blocho & maxwell, this was a very interesting piece. I recommend Erin Lee Carr's other films too. I just got done watching At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal (2019) and two years ago, I saw two completely riveting films: Mommy Dead and Dearest and Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop.

Obviously, if someone texts someone telling them to kill themselves, it's not okay. There were a lot of details, including the person who told her boyfriend to kill himself was only 17 at the time; the boyfriend was 18. Also, both teens were on meds which could have conflicted with their sanity. The boyfriend had been suicidal. The girlfriend thought she was "helping" him à la Michael Haneke's Amour. Also, the girlfriend used her boyfriend's suicide to get people to sympathize with her and she was really loving all the attention she was getting.

It was not very straightforward in terms of how the girlfriend should have been punished. However, she received a light sentence and is serving now. Also, she was just denied parole, but will get out soon enough.

Those details are scratching the surface. People have had very different reactions when presented with the complete details of the case.

Be careful with this one. Some of the stats referenced are unverified and even blatantly contradicted by most major studies.

I don't remember the filmmakers putting their children in it, but I agree that it's annoying. I think that was the weak link in Lauren Greenfield's documentary Generation Wealth which should have had nothing to do with her family.

You've been watching a lot of documentaries about food and sustainability and everything. I recommend Melanie Laurent's documentary DEMAIN aka TOMORROW if you haven't seen it, because its argument for veganism is pretty comprehensive. I saw it before I was vegan and was not ready to go in that direction, but it did convince me to give up red meat.

Examples are welcome. :D

Dairy screws me up personally and I found this documentary helpful for confirming my belief that humans don't need cow milk (milk from another species).

Be careful with this one. Some of the stats referenced are unverified and even blatantly contradicted by most major studies.
Examples are welcome. :D

Dairy screws me up personally and I found this documentary helpful for confirming my belief that humans don't need cow milk (milk from another species).
From what little I understand, 50 thousand years ago no humans had the ability to digest cow milk. It was something that evolved as different groups of people domesticated cows, and even today there are many populations where it is unusual or absent.

That is an interesting way of looking at it, but a huge part of the population is lactose intolerant and I keep reading stories about how dairy farms are going bankrupt. It's probably true that some people handle dairy better than others, but also causes a lot of congestion and people usually do better without it.

Well, I try to take all information with a grain of salt in any documentaries that I view, but it was refreshing to see a veganism argument that didn't focus on how "we are all earthlings".

I have... but I think that's more coincidental than a deliberate trend (Cowspiracy was an Official List documentary available on Netflix).

For what it is worth, I have gone with minimal dairy and without red meat for around five years myself. With the dairy, my body does seem to have trouble digesting it, and I am better off without it, but it is hard to avoid altogether (prepackaged sandwiches have butter, etc). With red meat, the W.H.O.'s classification of it as a Class 1 Carcinogen made me raise an eyebrow. I wasn't eating a lot of red meat even then, so it was just a matter of cutting beef out of my diet. Now I can't stand the taste. I tried to eat one of the plant-made burgers sold around here with imitation meat and I could barely finish it since it tasted so strongly of beef.

Locals from both Greenland and Tuvalu are interviewed in this documentary about rising sea levels. While far apart, both places are affected by climate change, with the melting ice in northwestern Greenland forcing residents to move south, while the coastlines of Tuvalu begin to disappear. With lots of lengthy title cards (zero voiceover narration), this is not always that captivating, but the insight into the culture and lifestyles of both places is great.

Be careful with this one. Some of the stats referenced are unverified and even blatantly contradicted by most major studies.
Examples are welcome. :D

Dairy screws me up personally and I found this documentary helpful for confirming my belief that humans don't need cow milk (milk from another species).
This post sums up a couple of the more glaring ones: https://www.quora.com/Fact-check-on-the ... misleading

As far as me personally, I do eat some dairy but as I get older I do notice that my body doesn't process it as well as it used to. I also rarely (no pun intended...) eat red meat since it seems to aggravate my stomach sometimes. I'm not necessarily opposed to this type of message of restricting dairy and red meat usage. My problem is when a doc twists the facts to support a claim that is just blatantly misleading.

91-94. Broken (s1, e1-4) (2019)
This is a Netflix anthology docuseries about broken systems. There was the episode on make-up fraud, which annoyed me because a) stop following "influencers", and b) stop buying shitty fake make-up. There was the episode on the vaping industry, which annoyed me because I'm incredulous at just how stupid people are, not thinking nicotine is in these products. There was the episode on "killer dressers", which annoyed me because at some point, people have to take the responsibility for shit in their own house. There was the episode on on the recycling sham, which annoyed me because it had very little new in it. All the episodes had some good information and I definitely learned stuff from each of them, they just all kinda failed to really get me excited and care about things.

95. Mommy Dead and Dearest (2017)
Watched this based on Allison's recommendation, and I'm glad I did. Weird story of Munchhausen by proxy and murder. Great tension build and a fascinating story. And edited together quite well. Very solid and definitely recommended.

20. Pearl Jam Twenty (2011)

Made to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Pearl Jam, Cameron Crowe's enthusiasm for the Seattle group's music comes across well here, but he struggles a bit to make the film more than just talking heads and concert footage. We get some offbeat anecdotes (memorabilia, including coffee cups; see above) and the band's history of drummers is amusingly portrayed in the style of a silent comedy, but this still felt pretty generic to me.

122. Impossible Dreamers (2016)
This one follows various senior citizen athletes and how they feel revitalized by focusing on fitness and competition. It's fine but pretty standard, more like a series of high-level profiles than an in-depth character study. I think it would have fared better if it had followed someone training, showing their fitness regime day to day and then showing them competing in a big event, something to make it a little more personal.

123. Tokyo-Ga (1985)
Wim Wenders directs a doc about Ozu including interviews with one of Ozu's go-to actors Chishû Ryû and Ozu's long-time cinematographer Chishû Ryû. It paints an interesting portrait of Ozu as a very pragmatic director who knew exactly what he wanted. The interviews and behind-the-scenes footage is intercut with Wenders exploring Japan and showing its culture in an attempt to show where Ozu got his inspiration. It doesn't entirely work all together but was interesting regardless.

124. Staub (2007)
Is a documentary about dust just one step from a doc about watching paint dry? But I jest (kind of...). Honestly it made me paranoid more than anything. I just wanted to stop breathing while I was watching it...

125. Black Hand Strawman: The History of Organized Crime in Kansas City (2009)
A fairly long and fairly dry but still somewhat interesting and thorough history of the mob in Kansas City. I live about three hours from there and had no idea of its sordid past. Since much of the source material is comprised of documents, newspaper clippings, archival mug shots and the like, most of the doc is essentially a series of old stills with a droning narration over them. It does have occasional interviews with historians and others to break it up a little though. Overall, if you are a big crime history buff, it's probably worth a watch.

125. Amsterdam Global Village (1996)
I would probably slot this 4-hour doc into the "city symphony" category although honestly much of it's run time is given to odd minutiae that doesn't really give me much of a picture of what Amsterdam is like as a city. Stray close-ups of random objects, people fucking and dancing... I dunno. I just didn't get much of a sense for why this needed to exist. Maybe it plays better as an experimental film than as a doc?
