This is a 9 hour "slow TV" documentary with no sound except ambient music performed by live musicians (not shown). A guy walks around various neighborhoods and popular tourist spots in Tokyo, backwards and away from the single camera, while people stream by. The genius of the whole thing is that they take this film and play it in reverse, so it looks like he is walking forward towards the camera while everyone and everything else is moving backwards. It's not deep, it doesn't make interesting social commentary, etc. But it is still interesting to watch and was a great choice for me to have on while I worked on tedious red tape. I was also chagrined to discover that there is no entry on ICM for it, so I cannot even check this after spending all day watching it.

57. The Movies that Made Us: Home Alone (2019)
Watched this in honor of OldAle's Home Alone review in the holiday thread. Available on Netflix - kinda fun to see the behind-the-scenes doc on a classic.

Zoophilia is the subject of this indie documentary that is unfortunately never as fascinating as one might expect. It is halfway in before the film really gets interesting as it introduces the death of a man while performing a sexual act with a horse, and even then much of the material feels repetitive as 'zoo' individuals continue to talk about feel isolated and shunned. The documentary does well drumming up sympathy for these lonely men though.

I didn't get a chance to comment before, but that's a weird happenstance of "I have no idea why, but I own that" for me here. I think I picked it up because I thought it would annoy my then girlfriend, but we ended up watching it together. Anyway, weird people and weird doc - this was 10+ years ago now, but I remember being surprised at just how sympathetic they made the men. If nothing else, it made me think about the subject from a different angle.

Toys cool. Star Wars awesome. Documentaries amazing. This particular one? UNDERWHELMING. It was the quality of a decent college lecture - fun topic, but horrific execution.

59. Are All Men Pedophiles? (2013, Netherlands)
Rewatch, and one that's stuck with me in the back of my mind for several years. It raises some interesting issues, but lacks the detailed evidence that would make it easier to buy into. I think it stays on the correct side of the "Is this TOO creepy?" line, but definitely approaches it.

60. Imminent Threat (2015)
Mass surveillance bad. Boring doc until the last 5 minutes where they seemed to do an imitation of Guy Maddin doing a wordless abstract short.

D'oh! Wrote these reviews up yesterday but forgot to post them.

ImageImageImage
93a. The Scanners Way: Creating the Special Effects in 'Scanners' (2014)
93b. Love Beyond the Grave: A Look at Return of the Living Dead III (2011)
93c. Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights: Behind the Scenes (2018)
93d. Too Much Horror Business: The Kirk Hammett Collection (2012)
Another chunk of horror-related featurettes. The Scanners Way and Love Beyond the Grave are both solid 20min. behind the scenes shorts. The Scanners Way in particular really digs into the effects work in a big way and would be quite useful for those looking to get into the SFX business or those who are big fans of practical effects. The RoftLDIII doc also has some interesting 'making of' stories, particularly the one regarding the homeless guy they made a zombie who's junk kept falling out while shooting. I've always wanted to go to Universal Studios for the Halloween Horror Nights and this short only reinforces that. It just looks like a lot of fun. And apparently Kirk Hammett of Metallica is basically just a huge horror dork who happens to be able to play guitar well, so that's kinda neat in a cheesy way.

Image
94. The Secret Glory (2001)
Richard Stanley brings us an experimental doc about an odd guy in 1930's Germany who becomes obsessed with finding the Holy Grail and ends up inadvertently becoming a Nazi SS Officer. It's a an interesting story told in a very bizarre, borderline abrasive but somehow fitting way courtesy of the man who brought us the insanity of Dust Devil.

Image
95. Burma VJ: Reporter i et lukket land a.k.a. Reporting from a Closed Country (2008)
Very good and very intense doc featuring primarily footage shot by underground reporters during the military regime of Myanmar, showing the demonstrations of the people protesting the government and the violent fallout. The very act of filming this is in and of itself a violation of federal law, so the reporters are putting themselves in danger to get the word out about what was happening in their country in the hopes of third party intervention. It is quite a fearless bit of filmmaking with the images telling a powerful story. Films like The Square and this are some of the more interesting political docs I've seen just because they mostly eschew talking heads in favor of filming the history itself in action.

I think this video sums up how I felt watching this (which took me four separate sittings to get through):

97. Milestones (1975)
This hybrid film that's part real life/part scripted was a very interesting and surprisingly engaging watch despite the 3.5 hour run time. It touches on so many different people from various walks of life trying to figure out their place in a post-summer of love world where the Vietnam War is winding down and you can feel that some of the people who had previously found meaning in railing against the system now doesn't quite know what to do with themselves. It actually feels very much in the same vein as some of Richard Linklater's films like Slacker and Waking Life where it's just living with these folks for a little while to try to understand a little of what makes them tick. I'm actually surprised this isn't more well known.

98. Perverse Preachers, Fascist Fundamentalists and Kristian Kiddie Kooks (1991)
Here we have a collage film in the vein of The Atomic Cafe comprised of clips from TV shows, archival news footage and other various analog ephemera that built an absurdist and deeply cynical portrait of Christianity via media. I believe Zontar Video, the publisher of it, had some kind of affiliation with the Church of Sub Genius, that mock religion founded back in the late 70's, which is certainly not surprising. While it was at times actually really funny with some real WTF moments, at over two hours it also could've used some tightening up in the editing room. Many of the clips run on far too long. Do I really need to see 20 minutes of Captain Hook (a guy who had a severe motorcycle accident and lost an arm and leg then found Jesus), the Christian pirate who "hooks children" onto God, performing a bizarre autopsy, hanging out with rapping puppets and making Jesus walk the plank? I mean... yea, absolutely. But there are other things that could've used some editing down is all I'm sayin'.

99. Long Live the New Flesh: The Films of David Cronenberg (1987)
David Cronenberg's career is profiled with interviews from the man himself, Martin Scorsese, Stephen King and others. It's a solid doc on Cronenberg's early more overtly body horror films, ending with The Fly (given the doc's release date). While it seems like this would make the doc feel dated, it actually makes a nice bookend on a particular phase in his career. After the fly, Cronenberg's films would start to become less visceral and more cerebral in nature, exploring deformations of the mind more than the body with films like Dead Ringers and Crash (although not totally devoid of bodily scarring either...).

Image
100. Earthlings (2005)
It's a very nausea-inducing, PETA-like doc depicting in graphic detail the various ways in which the agriculture industry slaughters animals with narration by Joaquin Phoenix and soundtrack by Moby. Based on that definition, I imagine you can determine what level of 'insufferable' this doc will be to you.

Image
101. The White Darkness (2002)
This was a pretty interesting doc from Richard Stanley on modern Vodou (voodoo) practices in Haiti. It features interviews with various practitioners explaining what they believe and debunking some misconceptions about what it is. It also features actual displays of religious rites which, aside from the goat slaughter, is really not radically different than what you would see in a more excitable Pentecostal church in the US. I'd say check this one out if you are interested in other cultures and religions. It's quite informative.

62. One Child Nation (2019)
Directed by Nanfu Wang, this is all about the one-child policy in China and how that was actually implemented. Forced sterilizations, forced "adoption", fines, etc. Shocking stuff, but a little underwhelming as far as the story goes.

63. The Bomb (2016)
A more experimental doc, it's sorta like a film student saw Koyaanisqatsi and thought "I can do better." Images of nuclear weapons with a music soundtrack. Not bad, but when you have the bar set at Koyaanisqatsi, it's hard not to be disappointed.

64. 9/11: Phone Calls from the Towers (2009)
About the last messages people left to their loved ones on 9/11. Meh.

65-67. Don't F**k With Cats (2019)
New Netflix docuseries. I'm going to spoiler my comments because ANIMAL CRUELTY WARNING:
SpoilerShow
This is a true crime doc about someone who posted a video online of themselves killing some kittens. And the people on FB who vowed to track down this person. And teh subsequent videos posted, including a videotaped murder. As far as a true crime doc, it was quite good - nice build of tension and good use of a linear timeline so you felt like you were learning along with the people. It just wasn't exactly a relaxing docuseries for someone recovering from a cold.

But as far as a casual watch, know that they have several of the animal cruelty clips shown in the doc, as well as ample discussion of said animal cruelty. I definitely had to look away several times. And pick up my cat against her will.

It's worth a watch, just know what you're getting yourself into before starting. Don't be like me.

A bit late to the party. It has been a stressful and infuriating month on my side, yet one also surprising and extremely rewarding...

Thanks for hosting, Coryn!

14. Zoo (2007)

Human sexuality is an interesting thing. I would be curious to see more paraphilia documentaries this month, though there don't seem to be tons out there because, I guess, it's a bit hard to get financing to shoot a documentary about, for example, sexual attraction to plants. I guess it's also a bit difficult to fashion a feature length presentation about such a topic, which I thought was one of the issues with Zoo. A little too much repetition, but yep, the documentary made me feel sad for these unfortunate men who feel closer to animals than other human beings (in multiple ways).

You might be interested in "Are All Men Pedophiles?" on Amazon Prime. It's not exactly a "good" documentary, but it does raise some interesting points surrounding the attraction to younger people. Like it draws a very clear distinction between attraction to pre-pubescent teens and post-pubescent teens. If nothing else, it makes you think about human sexuality in a different way.

There's also this doc I came across yesterday looking through this Strange But True Documentaries list on ICM that seems like it'd be in the same wheelhouse:
Married to the Eiffel Tower (2008)
I haven't watched it yet but it apparently profiles women who have an attraction to large physical objects.

102. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (2017)
Basically a doc editing together the behind-the-scenes footage captured during the making of the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon with new interviews with people involved, primarily Jim Carrey himself. So a couple of conclusions I can draw from this: 1. Jim Carrey is out of his f--king mind (which I already knew but re-affirmations are always nice). 2. He's also kind of an asshole. Still, Chris Smith of American Movie knows how to put together a doc on oddball disasters and still draw some pathos out of it, and some of the most interesting parts of the movie are when Carrey is just reflecting on his life and talking about why he does what he does.

Image
103. Sound City (2013)
The first hour of this doc is a retrospective on the famous Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, CA and it's impact on the music industry. The last section basically is an extended jam session with Dave Grohl (who purchased the Sound City soundboard when it went out of business) and many of the original Sound City artists like Stevie Nicks and Rick Springfield for another round of recording on the board that launched their careers. If you are a music fan, this is definitely one to check out.

Image
104. 78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene (2017)
I have to hand it to this doc for it's laser focus. While it does cover more than just the Psycho Shower Scene, it does primarily stay on task, breaking down the scene frame by frame and speaking with many different people in the industry and people involved in the film about how it was done and its impact. I'm not sure I'd recommend this to a casual film fan based on its specificity although this does do a great job of really illustrating why that scene is such an iconic piece of cinema to the point that Hitchcock really built the film around it.

Image
105. Lebensläufe a.k.a. Biographies (1981)
Very similar in theme to 7 Up (although this one actually started filming 3 years prior), basically follows a group of students in a small village over a 20-year period. It most like 28 Up, ending with where they all are in their mid-20's, seeing who has children, what their careers are and other life moments. One difference between this and the 7 Up series I noticed was that the documentarians seem to kind of be dicks. One girl they kept calling fat. They intentionally ask questions trying to piss off the interviewees to get a rise out of them. And then they ponder on why these people don't seem to like talking to them or don't bother to inform them of important milestones like getting married or having kids. I wonder why... <_< I will say, if you have enjoyed the 7 Up series, you will most likely find a lot to like here as well.

Artificial intelligence's evolution is debated here. The film is divided into distinct sections that vary in effectiveness, with robot art being the least interesting. The driver-less cars section is awesome though with curious intricacies (A.I. programmed to protect human life might kill its driver to save pedestrians), the sex robots is fun and some parts are simply funny, like the cut to a stuck robot vacuum cleaner after talk about robots taking over.

This Oscar nominated documentary looks at local rangers who work to conserve Congo's gorilla population while their country is ravished by foreign corporations with vested interests. The film benefits from some beautiful sunsets, misty mountain vistas and aerial shots that sweep over the African nation; the agenda, however, is a little all over the place (the gorillas actually do not feature very much) but a curious insight into Congo's history.

68. Over the Limit (2017, Poland)
This a behind the scenes doc of the training and coaching of the young woman who won the gold medal for rhythmic gymnastics at the 2016 Olympics. She was so meek and her coaches so mean, but she was so good. Amazing with a hula hoop. You really feel sorry for her.

69. Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas (2017)
This was pretty fun... all about the Jewish connection to Christmas, focusing primarily on the Jewish songwriters. Awesome info to learn this time of year.

70. Overdose (2010)
About the financial crisis and how we are apparently doing the same thing. Or something.

71. VHS Massacre: Cult Films and the Decline of Physical Media (2015)
This was a lot of fun, talking about physical media and the weird stuff you find on there. They weren't so hot on torrenting, but did appreciate the fact that it does get wider distribution.

72. Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's the Fantastic Four (2014)
This was a really cool story... and one that explains a whole lot about Arrested Development S4. It's about the making of Fantastic Four (from the MCU) in 1993... by Roger Corman. A ridiculous story of why the movie came about, how it got killed, and how there's a bootleg of it floating around. Pretty fun and weird trip through some of the ins and outs of film.

73. Out of Print (2014)
This is a doc about the New Beverly Theater in LA and how it focuses on classic and independent film, and uses this as a way to talk about the decline 35mm print. Very cool cast of characters, all film lovers.

74. Monster Madness: The Golden Age of the Horror Film (2014)
Talks about the classic monster movies (e.g., Dracula) in a way drier than a university lecture.

75. Birth of the Living Dead (2013)
About the making of Night of the Living Dead. Fun to see Romero talking about his film.

76. VHS Revolution (2017)
Another doc about VHS.

77. At the Drive-In (2017)
This is a story of a Drive-In. They show some cool stuff. But got pretty slow.

106. Le tombeau d'Alexandre a.k.a. The Last Bolshevik (1993)
Another from Chris Marker, this one is about a near-forgotten Russian filmmaker from the 1920's named Aleksandr Medvedkin who, despite his love and devotion to Communism, was repeatedly subjected to his films being shelved due to his more radically method of storytelling in his films as compared to the more straightforward propaganda of Eisenstein and other peers of the time. It's quite interesting and is not only a history of this filmmaker but also really about Stalin's reign as a whole and how brutal it all was.

107-109a. Box Art: The Stories Behind the Covers S1E1-8 (2018)
This is one I had contributed to on Kickstarter a couple years ago and just got the blu-ray in earlier this week that was part of my reward tier. It's from the director of Nintendo Quest and is a celebration of video game box art with a focus on older games where box art was critical to selling the game. It has interviews with luminaries in the industry like Al Lowe as well as game critics, collectors and most importantly several of the original designers of some of the more iconic box art. Overall I liked it although I think if it's missing anything, it would be an international point of view. There is some discussion of international box art but no actual Japanese or European artists are interviewed which would've been neat if included. Regardless, it was still a fun watch.

Image
109b. LBJ (1968)
Another one of those political collage essay docs, this one basically criticizing 60's America. I dug the soundtrack.

Image
110. Moana w/ Sound (1926)
Another of Robert Flaherty's ethnographic "documentaries" (in quotes because with Flaherty it's hard to tell what's real and what's staged), this one follows the day-to-day of some natives in Samoa as they go about their daily lives. In 1975, Flaherty's daughter actually returned to the village and recorded sounds and dialogue to sync up with the film to bring it to life. Apparently Flaherty had wished he could bring back the singing which he felt was beautiful and with the sound version, we can now hear it. The sound is actually synced up quote well given it was recorded 50 years later and certainly adds to the film.

Image
111. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005) REWATCH
I had already seen this one a couple years ago but my wife was curious about what the deal was with Enron, so I threw this on to get her some edumakation on the subject. It's still a frustrating and sickening watch to see unfiltered greed and power run amok on a large scale.

Image
112. The Old Quarry and Other Haunted Places of Central New York (2006)
Pretty much what it sounds like. It features people telling stories of haunted locations around upstate New York with some creaky ghost hunting footage (don't whisper folks... it could taint the evidence on this cassette recorder!). It was ok to pass the time but isn't gonna be garnering a rewatch from me any time soon.

Image
113. Il pianeta azzurro a.k.a. The Blue Planet (1982)
A sort of experiential doc that moves languidly with the ebb and flow of life itself on both a macro and micro scale. It's reminiscent of films like Microcosmos and Koyaanisqatsi but with a more natural feel to it. It was a pretty relaxing film to watch and at times quite beautiful.

This is a doc about life on the film festival circuit, as told by filmmaker trying to get his film accepted on the festival circuit. Not a great doc from a technical standpoint, but this talked quite a bit about the politics and ins and outs of getting into various film festivals, and I have to say that I learned a ton from it. I found it pretty interesting.

79-84. Sex, Censorship, and the Silver Screen (1996)
The title is pretty obvious, but this was a 6-part documentary about sex and censorship in film, starting with (roughly) the May-Irwin Kiss and continuing through Basic Instinct. Really interesting, talking about sex in silent cinema, a full two episodes on the Hays code, and then a couple on the after effects. Everything I knew about sex and censorship in film (some, but not much) was included, but tons more. Really interesting watch and definitely recommended.
