I read somebody somewhere compare this to a film by John Cassavetes, and the comparison makes sense as this feels more like a down-to-earth human drama than a documentary in the traditional sense - an "actuality drama" indeed. I can't say that I totally enjoyed all of the copious scenes of the pair bickering, but the gradual downwards spiral of the strained relationship was interesting, or at least the way it was edited together here.

And that's it for me this year. Thanks for hosting, Coryn!

105. The Movies that Made Us: Dirty Dancing (2019)
There was a lot more history to this film than I was aware of. Like how it was produced by a direct-to-VHS company and how hard it was to cast Swayze. Fun to see this and see the locations where it was shot. Wife loves this movie, so this doc was the one she was most interested in.

106-115. Making a Murderer S1 (2015)
Rewatch - I just discovered there was a season 2, so I figured I would rewatch season 1 before diving into the new stuff. I watch a fair number of crime docuseries and have been pretty disappointed by this. Too much focus on legal minutiae, not enough on the surrounding context.

116-117. Time: The Kalief Browder Story e1-2 (2017)
These are the first two episodes of a 6-part miniseries. About a young man sent to Riker's Island (notorious tough prison) without a trial for 3 years, simply because he couldn't afford bail. Interesting so far, and I'm very curious to see more.

Depending on how the day shakes out, I may have more. Not sure what, if anything, I'll end up watching. Regardless, thanks for hosting, Coryn!

149-152. Eurotika! E1-12 (1999)
A fun and informative series on European sexploitation and horror films, each episode focusing on a different theme or director. We have directors like Jess Franco, Jose Larraz, Max Pecas, Michael Reeves, Jean Rollin and Jose Benazeraf profiled as well as episodes on cult actresses, French adult films, Italian horror and more. I dug this one quite a bit.
That sounds cool - have you seen Sex, Censorship, and the Silver Screen? 6-part miniseries about sex in American cinema history. Pretty interesting and informative...
I haven't yet but it's one ive got on my hard drive. I'll definitely get around to it at some point though.

118. Mondo Topless (1966)
After watching the "Sex, Censorship, and the Silver Screen" docuseries earlier this month, I was curious to visit one of the Mondo-series nudie cuties they mentioned in the docuseries. And this was the first one I stumbled across. It's filled with boobs. It's loosely a documentary, mostly with voice-over narration of the topless scene in San Francisco, then talks about the topless scene in other cities and Europe, ostensibly by voice-overs from the women dancing topless on screen. I understand the appeal of it at the time, but this did not age well. It's just boobs.

119. The Movies that Made Us: Ghostbusters (2019)
Well, this did answer the question of why I liked the sequel better - better graphics. The production was so rushed that most of the effects scenes were the first takes, simply because of timing. Turned out pretty fun to see, but this episode wasn't as good as the other ones in this series.

My last post of the challenge! I always look forward to this one and this month was no different. Thanks Coryn for hosting!

Also to echo Roger's sentiments, for anyone in Australia, stay safe folks.

153. In Search of Bigfoot (1976)
I am continually impressed with cryptozoologists and their search for various mythological creatures, the tenacity and excitement at finding even the most circumstantial of crumbs of evidence to support their claims. That's how watching this movie feels. For much of its run time, it plays out more like an extended nature video of hikers in the Pacific northwest, only occasionally stopping to study a suspicious footprint or meticulously baggie and send off a mysterious hair found in the wild. It's more interesting as a character study really of the lead researcher and his intensity for the subject that he treats deadly serious.

Image
154. The Killing of America (1981)
A doc about death in and of America, it covers serial killers, assassinations and everything in between with quite graphic actual footage of murders and interviews with serial killers on their reasons and methods. It's all incredibly bleak but also fascinating and intense in a way. If you have the blu-ray of this, I definitely suggest watching the uncut, much longer Japanese version which has nearly 30 minutes of extra footage.

Image
155. Satanis: The Devil's Mass (1970)
156a. Sex Ritual of the Occult (1970)
156b. British Black Mass (1963)
Santis bills itself as a doc about and endorsed by the Church of Satan, featuring interviews with Anton Lavey himself. While philosophically the Church of Satan's beliefs actually seem well reasoned and not terribly radical at the end of the day (it's about openness, acceptance and being who you are unfettered from the rules of society basically according various members), their message is diluted with a barrage of silliness as it films their various rituals of naked women writhing on pyres, ritualistic chanting, etc. all lorded over by a guy in a dime store devil costume. In classic Something Weird fashion though, it's a schlocky good time to watch anyway. Also in Something Weird fashion, the DVD I have of this had several shorts. British Black Mass is apparently an excerpt from the mondo Ecco and features legendary actor George Sanders describing a satanic black mass. He really must've needed a paycheck at this point... Sex ritual of the Occult is another mondo-esque 30-minute short with some kind of "expert" describing various occult sex rituals (as if the title didn't give it away) with of course it all just being an excuse to show lots of skin. I'm afraid there's nothing educational there folks...

Image
156c. Sunken Dreams: William "Coin" Harvey & Monte Ne, Arkansas (2009)
This is a locally produced doc on the now flooded resort town of Monte Ne and the eccentric that founded it. William Harvey was a weird dude that believed the world was ending or something so after building up Monte Ne as a resort, he felt moved to build a giant pyramid (although he died before building more than just the foundation of it). The town was eventually flooded after the White River was dammed up to make Beaver Lake, creating an interesting scuba venture to explore a sunken town in the middle of the Ozark mountains.

Image
157. Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988)
A very good doc on the legendary jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. It showcases how amazing and eccentric/troubled he was in equal measure. It goes without saying that the glimpses at Monk playing in more private moments to friends and in the studio while recording are electric as well.

Image
158. Far from Poland (1984)
While this is on the surface about the Polish labor rights movement, in the tradition of films like Sherman's March it is also a doc about the filmmaker Jill Godmillow and her angst at not being able to go to Poland and film the movement firsthand, instead relying on archival footage, narration and re-enactments to convey the story. It's fine but also like other self-reflective docs can get a little annoying at how vain it can come across at times.

15. Into the Inferno (2016)

Volcanoes, Gregorian chanting, a narrator with a soft German accent: We're in Herzog territory! Returning to ground that he's covered before in La Soufriere and Encounters at the End of the World, Herzog ventures again into the world of vulcanology. As usual, his intentions cross the boundaries between the human, the natural, and the mystical. We get many beautiful shots of craters and lava flows, along with encounters with paleontologists in Ethiopia and cargo cultists in Vanuatu. We also get this: "I'm the only one in filmmaking who is clinically sane." That's right--according to Herzog in this movie, every filmmaker in the world other than Herzog is insane.

OP states:

Last edited by Coryn on January 2nd, 2020, 3:58 pm, edited 17 times in total.

So I would say you should either:

(a) Assume that the data is correct and get ahead with wrapping up the 2019 Challenge Olympics; or
(b) Diffuse responsibility and ask for someone to send Coryn a private message

Looks like it’s only missing cinephage’s last post/movie.

I'm sorry. I'm usually late in my final posts, as I don't log regularly enough. I'm so far away from the top that I don't really care whether it's included or not, it shouldn't change much.
I understand my last entry was made after the end date, and would accept it entirely if you decided to ignore it for its being out of delay. I enjoyed your hosting this challenge, and wouldn't want to add extra work because of my lack of diligence, i'm only a casual internaut, I guess... So feel free to do as you prefer.

In any case thanks for hosting, it was fun and I needed the push to watch more docs...

Not at all, I just didn't check the post after the end date and that's why I missed it. If I never missed a deadline I'd have the right to ignore the post but that's not the case. Thanks for taking part :)
