A screenshot from Barrandov Studio's elegant 1933 proto-noir of an apartment murder and murkiness involving well-to-do local figures; eye-catching in its use of sound and its capturing of expressive faces in close-up and with an interesting array of characters stepping on toes during the investigative probings of Jindřich Plachta's moustachioed detective:

This thriller has been called everything from a daytime noir to a 3:10 to Yuma style western; Lee J. Cobb is excellent whatever the case as a highly intimidating mobster, unnerving and unsettling everyone around him even when handcuffed. The overall film though is not quite as strong as his performance. Richard Widmark as the lawyer protagonist has some intriguing baggage, but it all feels like a distraction from the Cobb central plot.

102. A Simple Favor (2018)
List: None but it follows the noir template in classic fashion with Anna Kendrick as the Marlowe-esque character who is plunged into a twisty mystery spurred on by Blake Lively's femme fatale, her best friend, who goes missing one day with no explanation. Kendrick's investigations lead her down a rabbit hole that dredges up mysterious pasts, murder and intrigue. The only real major break from noir tradition is in its devilish but bubbly sense of humor (at one point Kendrick even uses Diabolique as a verb which I thought was pretty damn funny).

A police procedural noir with some noteworthy elements (a deaf-mute wife; a youthful, pre-fame Robert Loggia) but this is a generally dialogue-heavy affair that never goes anywhere particularly interesting. Youth gangs are grilled, detectives go undercover as reporters and actual reporters try to get juicy scoops, but amidst all this there are no especially engaging characters to follow around. Good 'and life goes on' end credits scene though.

40. City of Industry (John Irvin, 1997)
Day 19 - A Break from the Darkness

Day 20 - Lawrence Tierney Two-Pack

41. Bodyguard (Richard Fleischer, 1948)

I've gotten to be a big fan of Fleischer over the past decade; he was certainly always a director for hire, not generally being involved - or at least not credited - with writing or producing him films, and he did nearly every kind of feature imaginable over a four-decade career, and he doesn't have a hugely recognizable style. And yet, there's something about the economy and no-nonsense character to most of his work that sticks out; they are in the end commercial films that do their jobs well and that don't fuck around with any artsy nonsense; perhaps something we could use more of today. This is his fourth feature, his first that can be called noir, made for RKO's B unit, and Tierney stars as Mike Carter, a hot-headed cop who gets in trouble at the beginning of the film, and while on suspension (or permanent suspension; it's not entirely spelled out) starts to investigate a suspicious death at a meat-packing plant, all while being framed for a murder himself. Nothing special overall but nicely suspenseful and packing lots of plot and action into an hour.

42. The Hoodlum (Max Nosseck, 1951)

Another low-budget programmer running just over an hour, this one offers Tierney in a more typical role as an incorrigible criminal - the film makes a distinction here between "hoodlum" as a street tough, starting out an amateur, and "gangster" as the more professional, organized type. Not sure if this was ever a common usage, but whatever. Anyway Tierney is Vincent Lubeck, son of immigrants, who has just spent years in the pen and is paroled for his mother's sake, against the wishes of the warden, and who proceeds to ruin the lives of everyone around him and himself in short order when he first seduces his brother's fiancee, driving her to something desperate, then gets involved in an armored car robbery. This is a pretty silly movie overall with many plot holes and an extreme lack of realism, but it's made enjoyable through Tierney's over the top performance and some pretty hyperbolic dialogue on the part of some of the other characters as well; the mother's last message to Vincent is particularly intense.

Day 21 - The Most Boring Cop in the World

43. Footsteps in the Night (Jean Yarbrough, 1957)

Bill Elliott was one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood history, appearing in 277 features according to IMDb - many of them in starring roles, typically westerns. I've seen at least a dozen of his better-known films, stuff like Scarface where he usually had smaller parts. I knew the face and voice for sure but I can't say I remembered him as a presence, and if this performance is typical, I can see why. Here he plays the dullest, most droning cop I've ever seen on film, with a warm buttermilk voice that you just want to snooze to. The films as a whole isn't bad, it's a mistaken identity crime pic with an inveterate gambler (Douglas Dick) on the run from the cops after his next-door neighbor who he was heard quarreling with ends up dead in his apartment. It's another hour-long cheapie, this time from Allied Artists, so there isn't a whole lot of room for much outside of the basic plot, but it's well done and the actors apart from Elliott are lively enough.

Very similar to The Innocents, this spooky mystery-thriller was director Lewis Allen's follow-up to The Uninvited and it is an equally as atmospheric an affair with great locations, low/limited lighting and much ambiguity as to what exactly is going on between mysterious phone calls and night visitors. The narrative is not quite as satisfying this time round and the ending and romance are weak, but the parts that work here are breathtaking.

Day 22 - A Respite from the Night

Day 23 - 4 films for 4 hours for the 40s

44. The Madonna's Secret (William Thiele, 1946)

Pretentious European painter Francis Lederer is accused of killing his models and dumping them in the water - over multiple years and countries - but the plucky sister of one of his alleged victims decides to help the cops by posing as a fresh new model and getting info, despite the terrible risks. This isn't bad and it throws a couple of red herrings out there, but the reveal at the end struck me as pretty silly and not really credible.

45. The Spider (Robert D. Webb, 1945)

Another ex-cop turned P.I., now murder suspect story - I feel like that's been a theme this year, but maybe it's just such a common noir theme in general that I'm getting confused. Anyway seems like when there's a murder, it's always the private dick who's first in line as a suspect for the gung-ho cops, though to be fair in this case the first murder victim is in fact the P.I.'s partner, who didn't have such a good reputation. She was supposed to give our man (Richard Conte in his first noir role, after several G.I. parts) some information for his client (Faye Marlowe) involving the disappearance of her sister, but ends up whacked for her troubles, so who's behind it? Conte, with the occasional help of helper (lackey is more like it) Mantan Moreland has to find out. Pretty good; Moreland's role is perhaps a little less offensive than usual, but also not as funny as usual.

46. The Lady Confesses (Sam Newfield, 1945)

When an estranged wife shows up after 7 years to keep Hugh Beaumont from marrying his new love Mary Beth Hughes - and then winds up dead, with Beaumont the prime suspect - girlfriend Hughes decides to clear her fiancee's name and solve the mystery herself. A rare (but certainly not unique) noir with a female protagonist, this is a nicely put together murder piece with a surprising yet fairly well foreshadowed conclusion, set mostly in the world of nightclubs where a guy named Lucky (Edmund MacDonald, who sounds rather like Marlon Brando at times) runs the place and seems shady enough to be the real bad guy. But watch out for Beaumont, not playing anything close to Ward Cleaver here.

47. Behind Green Lights (Otto Brower, 1946)

The opening post-title page tells us this is going to be a "day in the life of a big city police department" so I was looking forward to a documentary-style police procedural, but such is not really the case - this is really just a typical murder story with a bit more focus on the cops than average. But it's reasonably well done, with Carole Landis as the prime suspect in the murder of a sleazy muckraker who may have been blackmailing her with info on her father who is running for office. William Gargan is the lieutenant in charge of the investigation, which starts when the murder victim rolls up, dead, in a car right onto the sidewalk in front of the department. This also features noir and western stalwart John Ireland in just his second role, a rather thankless detective part, and it's got a bit more humor, has a bit lighter touch than most films tagged as noir, but the cast is nice and it's as pleasant an hour as any in this batch.

1. Brute Force (1947)
2. 5 Against the House (1955)
3. Shock Corridor (1963)
4. Pickup on South Street (1953)
5. Little Caesar (1931)
6. The Long Goodbye (1973)
7. Whispering Footsteps (1943)
8. Lady in the Death House (1944)
9. Strangers in the Night (1944)

11. The Mark of the Whistler (1944)

14. Voice of the Whistler (1945)
15. Scarlet Street (1945)
16. The Hoodlum (1951)
17. Footsteps in the Night (1957)
18. Point Blank (1967)
A good, not great, late noir with Lee Marvin trying to get back his money. Cool shots of Alcatraz, and some decently suspenseful moments, but it didn't quite draw me in the way I wish it would have.

19. Inner Sanctum (1948)
Yawn.

So which version did you prefer? :D
Although I gave the same rating and think both have their points of interest, I slightly prefer, in this case, the softcore version. They had a decent budget to recreate the 40s with considerable style and gusto, a fine cast of performers both with and without their clothes on, and even an engaging Chandler-esque story to go along, so that, when the sex breaks in, the plot progression and narrative interest gets interrupted and the whole thing loses in suspense and urgency (in the X-rated version). I would recommend to watch both though… :D

The premise is intriguing here with things only growing more interesting as a sly twin brother emerges after the titular murder in the dark. It is almost halfway in though before the incident even occurs though and while writer-director Hugo Haas is excellent balancing a double role in which he becomes an increasingly taunting presence, the film is burdened by loud musical cues for all its key dramatic moments and an oddly comical ending.

I think I'd agree with that assessment. The most surprising thing to me about this movie is that the plot is surprisingly engaging, and it definitely works better in the the non-X version that has extra scenes of dialogue to flesh out the characters.

FTV:13:Mad Detective (2007)8

Image

Introducing the audience to Bun's ability to visually see other peoples inner personalities as "ghosts" in a all-in manner, the screenplay by Kin-Yee Au, and co-director Ka-Fai Wai refreshingly avoids offering any dry origin for Bun's supernatural power, instead brilliantly feeding it into the fractured state of Noir loner Bun, whose focus in seeing these ghosts becomes blurred by the breakdown of his marriage, causing Bun to create a imaginary version of his wife. Being able to display the true image of suspects on the inside, the writers wonderfully twist the Neo-Noir path Bun takes inside out, via having to dig himself deep into sighting the spirit of fellow cop Wong, igniting paranoia in corrupt police as Bun digs closer to the truth, leading to a a wonderfully bitter ending where the true image of what took place is altered.

Made under the Hong Kong indie film studio he has co-founded, ( a rarity since the Handover) directing auteur Johnnie To & cinematographer Siu-Keung Cheng continue to expand upon the dopplegangers and mistrust themes of To's works. Reflecting Bun seeing multiple versions of the same person in dazzlingly stylised reflecting shots gazing at the various personalities confronting him, cut with razor sharp editing by Tina Baz to above shots viewing the grim reality on the ground. Bringing sanity out of the madness of the detective with a blistering smoked warehouse final, To recoils the action with a ice cool, Neo-Noir atmosphere, dicing Bun's investigating with a steamed, clinical dark blue, which To brilliantly cracks on surrealist flourishes mirroring Bun's degrading sanity. Detecting a role written with him in mind,Ching Wan Lau gives a excellent turn as Bun, thanks to Lau balancing a Noir precession in solving the case, with a increasingly weakened grip on reality for the mad detective.

FTV:14:Detective Story (2007) 10.

Whilst the homoerotic element in his works is here limited to being painted on the rather Camp psychotic nutter, (who has the cackle of psychos from the peak era of Gialli) here directing auteur Takashi Miike reunites with occasional cinematographer collaborator Kazunari Tanaka to crystallize other recurring motifs, with the visceral edges of Giallo and Neo-Noir. Serving up a fresh mug of gore in the opening scene, Miike cleverly pulls back the pulpy thrill from his gore scenes of the past, to instead drill into the psychological chill with a bleak atmosphere spread on pitch black colours lining the walls of long tracking shots backed by the fantastic Industrial hum from Miike’s regular composer Koji Endo.

Dabbing in the ultra-stylisation of the Giallo in the build up to the toured victims being followed by long first-person tracking shots,Miike brilliantly contrasts the murder set pieces with a brittle bones Neo-Noir atmosphere, utterly drained of any primary colours in expertly framed long wide-shots on the investigators surrounded by a grey, sterile world, where they must find the brush strokes of the killer. One of only 7 credits they have, (the last was in 2010) the screenplay by Tsutomu Shirado makes it a huge shame Shirado has not gotten more work, with Shirado corkscrewing slow-burn thrills on the Neo-Noir loners having to go outside the business management style of the police in order to unmask the wonderfully strange origin roots to the killings, which Shirado pulls up with flamboyant flashbacks to the beginnings of the masked killer painting the front cover to this detective story yellow.
