The set-up feels overly exaggerated here with James Franco doing and saying all the wrong things at all the wrong times; the trajectory of the tale is pretty obvious from the get-go too. Everything kind of works though thanks to the honesty and energy that Franco brings to the part; a la Pineapple Express, he nails complete oblivion to how uncomfortable he makes others feel. His mini-mansion has some quite amusing gadgetry and art too.

13. Heavy Trip (2018) - 4.5/10

Apparently I'm in the minority here: Rotten Tomatoes has this in the 90's. i definitely found it charming, and the cast warmly likeable (is that a thing...warmly likeable?), but about 2/3 of the way through the film, it went from fun and occasionally hilarious, to outright absurd and frankly lame. Some will find it fun from this point forward, in the vein of a Bill and Ted's or Wayne's World etc., but I found the Satan jokes became predictable and stale and, again, the plot too ridiculous to feel anything genuine by that point. Oh well, wanted to like this.

A homeschooled woman meets a mysterious stranger and questions everything.

Does it belong on a list? I wouldn't be surprised to see it on a list. It's a not quite my cup of tea, but I can recognize that it's a really well made and really well acted movie.

With shrill vocal mannerisms throughout, Charlie Day is thoroughly dislikeable as the weakling here, and despite having a doting daughter and a passion for words, it is too easy to sympathise with Ice Cube's desire to punch him in the face. Ice Cube fares better in a role written with ample ambiguity and unpredictability, but the whole thing feels incredibly silly and unrealistic (teachers constantly swearing at and in front of kids). Some fun pranks though.

The plot bears several similarities to The Hangover, written by the same team, yet also manages to be its own thing with the two friends finding out darker and darker things about their drunk friend in during a quest to get him back home. At the same time, the film looks at how friends drift apart after high school and so on. All of this thoughtfulness gets a little lot amid much of the crudity and implausible plot points, but this was fairly fun.

A relatively fun murder mystery. It is not as funny as it could have been, but I was thoroughly engaged throughout, especially as the plot became increasingly complex and twisted as it progressed. I have no idea what is up with Daniel Craig's accent or whether it was meant to just be funny, but given something as petty as that is the biggest thing that I would hold against the film (implausibility aside), it is safe to say that I really liked this.

51. Big City Blues -- LeRoy, 1932.
52. Frozen II -- Buck & Lee, 2019.

The Big Shakedown just squeaked in before Hays Code rules took effect, so there are a few racy bits near the beginning. Bette Davis does a lot with a ho-hum "supportive girlfriend" part, but virtually disappears during much of the film's second half for disappointing reasons.

Gargantua was a dumb, goofy Godzilla competitor that looked like it came from the Syfy Channel, although I will concede that Adam Baldwin seemed to give his part more effort than one would expect. Still awful, and the "beasts" looked ridiculous. It was rated something like 2.8 - 3.0 on IMDb.

Ne nous fâchons pas was a fun Lino Ventura gangster comedy.

Buck Benny Rides Again puts Jack Benny on a dude ranch, pretending that he's a cowboy extraordinaire. I can check off yet another film in my quest to see all of Ward Bond's appearances. ;-)

The Strange Door has a delightfully nasty Charles Laughton and a sad Boris Karloff in a gothic thriller, but it all just falls kind of flat in the end -- the script is pretty silly, and the younger leading characters just can't pull it off.

Kierion is a Greek political thriller -- a leftist journalist is arrested on suspicion of murdering an American colleague. It's not bad....reminds me of a lesser Costa-Gavras.

I loooooooove Satyajit Ray and I looooooove detective stories, so Joi Baba Felunath is right up my alley, but it's mostly for Ray completists. Entertaining, but not one of his best works.

Little was stupid. It was sort of a combination of Big meets Scrooged (minus the holiday aspect), with the notable departure being that it starred an African-American woman (and mostly African-American cast). It still wasn't a good movie.

I neraida kai to palikari was a very silly comedy/musical variant on a Romeo & Juliet story.

Raspad, I recommend, particularly to anyone interested in Chernobyl, especially to those who admired the HBO miniseries -- this Ukrainian film made not long after the actual disaster is a very worthy precursor.

Les Lyonnais was an okay gang thriller; an older gangster-turned-straight is pulled back into the life when his childhood friend and crime ally runs afoul of the law and other criminals.

The Beast of Hollow Mountain was a low-budget, mostly-Mexican sci fi / horror story....and a western! Not a great film, but I like to watch all sorts of westerns, and the Mexican scenery made for a change.

Big City Blues was a cute pre-Code film about a small town heir who runs into trouble (and the wonderful Joan Blondell) in New York City.

Frozen II was not as good as its predecessor, but it was still some very beautiful animation with a more up-to-date/worthy message for would-be princesses and princes than many Disney precursors. Parents be warned: my kids have been singing and humming songs from it ever since they saw it.

21. Hidden Fear (André De Toth, 1957)
22. City of Industry (John Irvin, 1997)
23. Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019) (cinema)

Reading a few comments here, and a couple of ecstatic reviews elsewhere, notably Richard Brody's piece in The New Yorker I wonder not so much if we saw different films, but how we focused on the different elements here. Or perhaps more precisely, how some seem to feel the the elements mesh together well, and that some of the obvious flaws (in my opinion) like the risible science on display in nearly every scene, are insignificant or not even flaws at all. OK, I get it - it's going for some melding of Kubrick-Tarkovsky mysticism-sense-of-awe, maybe a little Malick in there too. But it's still very much embedded in the framework of a genre piece, it's got action sequences, and it's got technical/space stuff, and it's got a plot out of a hundred, no a thousand bad action movies from the past 40 years (has the Famous Man gone crazy and is he trying to Destroy the World? Only One Man can Save Us!!!). It just didn't gel for me, and I couldn't forgive Brad Pitt jumping through space using a piece of a ship as protection from meteors, and I couldn't forgive the extreme dullness of his voiceover throughout. I'll never complain about Harrison Ford's narration in Blade Runner again.

24. Cheongchun / Plum Blossom (Kwak Ji-kyoon, 2000)

The only film from Bae Doona's first decade in film that I hadn't seen, and I definitely didn't save the best for last, as this is a totally lame and dull melodrama about a couple of boys finishing high school and starting college (a couple of years go by) and their efforts to lose their virginity and perhaps find true love. Siu-in, the more sensitive kid, falls hopelessly in love with a teacher in high school and though he tries to forget her with other women, can't - if you've seen a lot of Korean cinema of this type you may guess where his trajectory will lead him, while Ja-hyo is more overtly macho and aggressive but finds his cynical sex-yes love-no exterior cracking when he meets nurse Nam-ok (Bae Doona). Nothing will surprise most people here, (apart from a larger amount of nudity than I expected for this kind of film from S Korea) and I found both guys pretty tiresome, but Bae is just great as usual, and brings real life and fun into this whenever she's on screen. Have to say that Bae is right up there with Emma Stone for me in that she always, or nearly always, makes anything worth watching - but unfortunately both have pretty mediocre filmographies apart from just a couple of all-time favorites.

25. Ko-ri-a / As One (Moon Hyeon-seong, 2012)

This could be the most cliched film I've ever seen that I still managed to (grudgingly) like. It's every damn inspirational sports drama story there is, this time with the added politics of the first North-South cooperation on any international stage since the partition. It's the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships in Chiba, Japan, and the two Koreas team up to best the hated Chinese! Who will win? What personal dramas will develop? How will the rival coaches of the teams make friends (hint: alcohol). The only "novelty" here is that the story is about female athletes, and that it's about ping-pong, and I guess that might make it vaguely more interesting for the sports-film enthusiasts out there. Me, I watched it solely for Bae Doona, here playing the top NK champion, very severe and humorless at first - of course the ice will eventually break and she will eventually make friends with her SK counterpart (Ha Ji-won) dontcha know. But somehow despite the obviousness of it all, and the propagandistic elements (anti-China as well as anti-North), at the end it was kind of moving, thanks mostly the the fairly believable growing friendship between the two stars. I wouldn't strongly recommend it or anything but it certainly ended up being more tolerable than I expected. Music is incredibly sappy and obvious throughout.

26. In-lyu-myeol-mang-bo-go-seo / Doomsday Book (Yim Pil-sung/Kim Jee-woon, 2012)

Another just OK movie, this one is a three-part film, with the first and last directed by Yim and the middle by the much more famous KIm, giving us three end-of-the-world scenarios. The first is a pretty standard zombie apocalypse story, though it seems (perhaps) to be trying to say something about consumption and meat eating in particular, and there's a vague religion (Christian) angle, but these elements aren't really developed. Notable for featuring director Bong Joon-ho in a supporting role. The second and by and large most successful element concerns a robot who may have attained nirvana as the reincarnation of the Buddha - thus perhaps obviating the need for man, and the third involves a little girl who somehow apparently orders a giant billiard ball online, which years later comes to destroy earth. This was kind of fun if silly and, like the first element, offers little explanation for anything; Bae Doona appears in the last 10 minutes as the grown-up girl. Overall, some interesting ideas, but all pretty half-assed in execution.

Occasional touches highlight that John Ford was behind the camera here, including a magnificent tracking shot that sweeps along a dinner table at a boarding house. For the most part though, this is a lifeless affair. The egocentric protagonist is obnoxious and while the supporting characters are interesting (failed vaudeville and theatre performers), they receive close to no screen time. It is also seldom funny and feels unfinished at 57 minutes.

Dickens' classic novel brought to life.

Does it belong on a list? Ehh.... no. It's fantastic period piece. This adaptation has some great performances by Christopher Plummer, Nathan Lane, Alan Cummings, Jamie Bell, etc.. But I just could not stand Charlie Hunnam in the titular role. What a miscast.

This silent comedy has an adequate premise, but it is also a bit complex for a movie clocking in at less than one hour with neither the romance nor the revolution given sufficient focus. The laughs are also scattered, though the energetic stuntwork (climbing trees and so on) admittedly adds some zest. Certainly, this is lot more tolerable than the film's meager IMDb rating would suggest, though it is no Freedonia/Duck Soup political satire.

These bundles grow very quickly when not in a posting mood. Here are 30 more, some 5 days worth of viewing. Will focus more on the Noir stuff from 1945 the rest of the month before I do the last 20 or so films I have left from 1944.

111. Gypsy Wildcat (1944, Roy William Neill) - 6/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Gypsy Wildcat (1944) is one of those forgotten Technicolor adventures from the war years. I can understand if people find this gypsy affair corny, but I found this Jon Hall Errol Flynn replacement quite fun. Good action, sneaky plot and stunning to look at. The wedding delay was stretched out comically long, but you had Nigel Bruce bumbling fool messing up the ceremony so I took it in good humor. There wasn't exactly many films like this made during those years, so for me it was a welcome experience.

112. Marine Raiders (1944, Harold D. Schuster) - 4/10
--- Marine Raiders (1944) was going to be a very average war movie no matter how much pepper they used in the stew.

113. The Navy Way (1944, William Berke) - 4/10
--- More clowning in the Navy with a little boxing thrown in. Very typical filler for the war years.

114. They Came to a City (1944, Basil Dearden) - 5/10
--- Here is something a little more artistic from Ealing. Adapting J.B. Priestley's play for the big screen. Ramblings of hope during the dark years with minimal dreamy sets. I couldn't make up my mind if I loved it or hated it, soI'll just say I appreciated the attempt and leave it at that.

115. Of One Blood (1944, Spencer Williams) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Stated out with a nice atmosphere, but it quickly turned out to be the usual crappy production all-black movies consisted of back then. Nothing raw to make up for it's shortcoming either.

116. Pardon My Rhythm (1944, Felix E. Feist) - 4/10
--- Didn't possess much except for that youthful energy to make it a up-beat musical. At least it featured the always adorable Gloria Jean as it's poster child.

117. One Body Too Many (1944, Frank McDonald) - 5/10
--- I was engaged half-way though. Hey, it had Bela Lugosi and Jack Haley as relief and it built-up it's mystery quite nicely. Unfortunately they fumbled the final acts, making a mess of the foundation they'd made for this "old dark house" murder mystery. Did still enjoy it.

118. The Hour Before the Dawn (1944, Frank Tuttle) - 5/10
--- The film starts with W. Somerset Maugham's signature, giving a sense of prestige. And then enter Veronica Lake as a caricature Nazi spy with a bad German accent, which sent her career spinning on a downward spiral. Sure, she was known as a vixen, but a Nazi that unsympathetic did her no favors, and in all honest exposed her as an actress. The story itself was alright, a okay war-time film. There just wasn't anything extraordinary about it apart from the trainwreck casting of Lake.

119. My Pal Wolf (1944, Alfred L. Werker) - 5/10
--- It's a adorable little girl and a dog. You know, a Lassie type movie, except with a dog that came before her in Grey Shadow for his retirement feature. A perfectly fine family movie without it being anything super special.

120. Swing Hostess (1944, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- There really was a lot of small and pointless musicals being made during thee war years. They are so light that that you can barely breath because the material is so thin. Swing Hostess (1944) is very fine example of one of those, and I won't waste another breath on this.

121. The Town Went Wild (1944, Ralph Murphy) - 4/10
--- A underwhelming farewell to Freddie Bartholomew's career. Made by a independent production company who got distribution through what was left of poverty row, that in itself is not a quality sign. What was a sign of quality was the supporting cast. They somehow managed to get Edward Everett Horton for this, along with Maude Eburne and several other well-liked Hollywood faces. And that was the saving grace for me. Otherwise, it was very easy to see Bartholomew's appeal vanishing as he turned adult.

122. A Fig Leaf for Eve (1944, Don Brodie) - 3/10
--- Jan Wiley in a very basic lost-heiress story. They try to spice it with some "exotic" dancing, but even that was tame as hell.

123. Bees in Paradise (1944, Val Guest) - 5/10
--- British musical with a touch of naughty. Enjoyment consists on how well you can stand Arthur Askey and sexual innuendo, though those two might not go hand-in-hand in a natural way.

124. Babes on Swing Street (1944, Edward C. Lilley) - 4/10
--- I'm really overdosing on these light musicals, but at least this one had veteran comedians to divert us from the pointless musical numbers they fill this stuff with.

125. Nabonga (1944, Sam Newfield) - 4/10
--- One of the few times Sam Newfield managed to film Buster Crabbe without making him look like a complete schmuck. Might still be a stinking jumble drama, but at least the hero looked handsome and rugged. Though, not as rugged as the man in ape costume. Believe me, there are much worse jungle movies out there, which says a lot about the state of Hollywood's poverty row in those days.

126. One Exciting Night (1944, Walter Forde) - 4/10
--- Slightly loose plot, but it ended up being mildly enjoyable. I was a bit worried that all the singing was going to turn me off the experience for me, but the tones for Vera Lynn was soothing enough.

127. Cobra Woman (1944, Robert Siodmak) - 6/10
--- I'm actually enjoying these not so acclaimed adventure films starring Maria Montez & Jon Hall. A nice break from what was the norm in 1944. The action here was a bit sparse, but they really kicked in a gear for the finish. The film was always gorgeous to look at, and you had characters like Sabu & Lon Chaney Jr. mixed in, so there was a lot to get thrilled about. Effective war-time escapism.

128. The Monster Maker (1944, Sam Newfield) - 4/10
--- Considering this was handled by low-class director Sam Newfield, I was impressed by some aspects of this horror film. Don't get me wrong, it's as super cheapy, but I liked J. Carrol Naish creepy character and they actually did a good job with the make-up of the sick Ralph Morgan. Let's just say The Monster Maker (1944) was better than expected, though that's setting a very low bar.

129. My Buddy (1944, Steve Sekely) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Noble idea, but for me My Buddy (1944) didn't engage much. Takes a solders return and shows the trouble that might face someone returning to civilian life, which turns this one into a part-gangster drama. But not in any essential way.

130. Roger Touhy, Gangster (1944, Robert Florey) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Roger Touhy, Gangster (1944) gives off the feel "they sure don't make 'em like they used to" about the gangster genre. A bleak attempt at one, and you can't help but think this would have been several times better had it been made a decade earlier. But it has some cool bits and some likable actors in there, so you'll get through it alright. Just a very average outing.

131. Dixie Jamboree (1944, Christy Cabanne) - 4/10
--- The plot is a nifty little riverboat take on the bootleg stories, but unfortunately it was limited how much they got out of it. Instead the most intriguing thing about this poverty row production was the amount of former well-known players in Hollywood the managed to hire for this small release. Sure, they were all on a downward spiral, but I will always love me some Guy Kibbee & Charles Butterworth. On the bad guy side they had such reliable guys as Lyle Talbot & Frank Jenks to liven things up. And the girl in the middle of it all was Frances Langford. All usually above this level of production, but things were changing rapidly in Hollywood during these years. They certainly made this watchable.

132. In Society (1944, Jean Yarbrough & Erle C. Kenton) - 6/10
--- Felt I had seen most of these gags in Laurel & Hardy movies, but that's perfectly fine with me for I absolutely love Laurel & Hardy, and Abbott & Costello are almost as good! They certainly brings a livelier time!

133. Men on Her Mind (1944, Wallace Fox) - 3/10
--- Mary Beth Hughes in a tired story of a girl and ambitions, with many men coming in her way. A bore on a tight budget.

134. The Contender (1944, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- A working dad/boxer gets into woman trouble. Sam Newfield matching Buster Crabbe with Arline Judge & Julie Gibson for what became a unoriginal and tame affair.

135. Klaus (2019, Sergio Pablos) - 7/10
--- Surprisingly high-quality Santa tale! Perfect for the season.

136. Youth Runs Wild (1944, Mark Robson) - 2/10
--- A moralistic afterthought for the forgotten youth of the war years. Lame.

137. The Missing Juror (1944, Budd Boetticher) - 5/10
--- A little poor in star-power and finesse, but it does have a rich revenge story and that'll easily carry B-picture like this. Enjoyable hunt.

138. Address Unknown (1944, William Cameron Menzies) - 6/10
--- German family living in the US moves back to Nazi Germany and feel the effects of that "wise" decision. Paul Lukas basically plays a coward who gets what's coming to him. While a little hollow and uneven in the build-up, there are some powerful scenes along the way before a real strong finale! That was such a quality ending, both visually and story wise and it's worth seeing regardless of this not being among the top anti-Nazi movies out there. Touch of brilliance.

139. One Mysterious Night (1944, Budd Boetticher) - 4/10
--- The play between Boston Blackie and the Police got a little too silly, and almost in the way of the actual plot. That did mean a fun entry in the franchise, just not one to take too serious. Only a bit of quick fun.

140. The Falcon in San Francisco (1945, Joseph H. Lewis) - 5/10
--- The 1945 entry of The Falcon series starring Tom Conway. A smooth Tom Conway, who makes a rather tumbling mystery a lot smoother. Involves a child and mysterious people and deaths around her. Not sure the plot made that much sense, but at least it made or a few twists and turns.

A surprisingly good cast for how terrible this ended up being. A guy shows up in a small town looking for someone... things happen and the cops think he's holding up a liquor store and holding people hostage, even though he's not. It actually has a cool premise, but ends up being all over the place. It seems to come from the "let's throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" school of directing.

16. Les 5 gentlemen maudits, by Julien Duvivier (1931) 8/10

A nice, atmospheric movie, with great shots of the Marocco of the 1930's...

17. La belle époque, by Nicolas Bedos (2019) 8,5/10

A beautiful film. I love the story and how it is used in the film. Of course having Daniel Auteuil and Fanny Ardent amont the actors can't hurt...

18. J'ai perdu mon corps, by Jeremy Clapin (2019) 7,5/10

Great animated film, with an innovative approach. Too bad the ending is so weak, though.

19. Les éblouis, by Sarah Suco (2019) 4/10

Good subject, bad direction...

20. Kundo: min-ran-eui si-dae, by Yun Jong-bin (2014) 7/10

An "Eastern" under the influence (Sergio Leone, obviously). A lot of action, not a lot of originality... Enjoyable nonetheless.
They wouldn't recommend it, but... (15)Show

With a precocious young girl and mysterious male protagonist, the parallels to Leon: The Professional are striking, yet this lacks the emotional oomph of the Luc Besson film since there are only a couple of brief scenes dedicated to the pair bonding before she is kidnapped - and she is mostly a supporting player thence on. This is a pretty gripping film though, especially as the violence turns graphic and brutal. Some of the stunts are pretty amazing too.

5. Heartstone (2016)

6. Blood Money (1933)

7. Wonderstruck (2017)
This is a movie steeped in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the neighborhood where I grew up. A significant portion takes place at the American Museum of Natural History, the scene of many of my childhood sojourns. And a scene was filmed in the used bookstore (Westsider Books) a few blocks from where I grew up. It was a real kick to see a movie that was filmed in that bookstore, widely loved in the neighborhood, and yet on its last legs because of financial conditions (https://bit.ly/2KTOjsU), just like every good thing that once populated the Upper West Side.

All that being said, this movie sucked. The story was shallow, meandering, and predictable. The acting was mediocre. The sound design ... oh gosh, I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie that made me repeatedly think about how many bad decisions were made about the sound. And with that, I regret to say that Todd Haynes is now on my dead-to-me list. Barring unusual circumstances, I will no longer see any of his movies. He joins Roman Polanski and Woody Allen on that list. But those directors at least once made great movies. They're on the list because I haven't seen them make anything good in at least 30 years. Haynes on the other hand, has never made a movie that I didn't think was a failure. He's zero-for-four in my book: Far from Heaven, I'm Not There, Carol, and Wonderstruck. The closest comparison I can think of is George Clooney, who is zero-for-five, and certainly belongs on my dead-to-me list, but he keeps making movies that seem specifically designed to excite my interest (historical movies about esoteric topics/episodes).

8. A Late Quartet (2012)
There is an inner conflict in this movie. The conflict is between, on one hand, the talent of the actors and the love the filmmakers clearly have for the world of chamber music, and the sheer melodrama of the story on the other hand. As much of a joy as it is to see great actors at work, the story is ultimately self-defeating. Adult life is messy, even in the rarefied circles of classical musicians, but is it this messy? And what should I make of the ridiculous ending, in which most of the conflicts are resolved, disingenuously, within a few seconds?
