Which Challenges would you like to see run in 2020?

by sol
On this thread you'll be able to vote on which challenge ideas you would like to see run next year.

For the moment, we have decided to experiment with a preset schedule for the country/region challenges, so this poll is only about determining the remaining genre and theme challenge options for 2020.

Note: <400 Checks, Documentary, Film Noir and Horror will be automatically included in next year's schedule.

This poll will remaining open for 30 days, closing on the second Saturday in November at around 3:15am GMT.

The option "crime films" implies that there will defenitely NOT be any television in that challenge right?

It's entirely up to whoever is hosting.

I merely used the term "films" because I thought that it made the genre less confusing. I did the same with Sports Movies in the hope of making it clear that the challenge is not about watching live sports. I suppose in the same spirit I wouldn't recommend watching "Police Ten 7" for a Crime Challenge.

That's something that we can discuss in November... if it ends up being an issue.

Keep in mind that while there are tons of ties at the moment, there might be only one or two (or less) by the end of the poll once everybody has had a say. Last year we had 40+ participants; with a few new users, the total might be even higher this year.

Great job of streamlining this whole process, sol. This seems like it will create a solid challenge list (along with the changes to handling countries).

I do have one question - why was Mystery/Suspense/Thriller split into two challenges in the voting for next year? My apologies if this is a redundant question but I do not recall seeing any discussion on this.

Again, great job, sol, and everyone else who has participated in shaping this.

It was two different challenges last time too, but got merged because of a tie, iirc.

Did I miss something? We're not having separate votes for theme challenges and genre challenges?

Yeah. That was decided in the previous preparation topic. Because we aren't voting on country/region challenges any more. And because the distinction is some times difficult to make. For some it's hard to say if they belong to theme or genre. Also one poll is easier than two.

Usually very late in the year. Most polls are run because they haven't been run in a while, so it's limited what should be decided.

I voted for a full contingent of options but some of the ones I would most like to see do well for next year are Musicals, Directed by Women, Westerns and DtC Nominees. The two middle ones should waltz into the line-up with little difficulty. Not overly hopeful about the chances of my other two favourites at this stage. We live in hope though!

I kinda feel like we should have a decade challenge every month, I really dig those.

And maybe instead of a Cult/Grindhouse/Drive In one, maybe focus on one of the massive lists like Psychotronic or Film Fanatic.

interesting tie going right now that is almost certain to change over the next two weeks... I count 8 tied for the bottom slot right now (and only 2 can make it):
50s
60s
coming of age
cult/grindhouse
degrees of separation
LGBTIQ
musical
shorts

...curious to see how pans out.

Out of those, I'd particularly love the 1950s and Musicals. Shorts and LGBT are two I also voted for so some faves of mine are certainly going to fall by the wayside. Pity!

Also, I'm rather taken aback to see that Space and Time Travel is performing so well. I would tend to agree with sentiments expressed by others that it is potentially something of a redundant concept and quite easily covered by Sci-Fi/Fantasy (which I did vote for).

Well, my first count was 11 votes, so it if it is the same for others they might fill up the remaining votes with things they wouldn't mind seeing. With SF/Fantasy leading it seems reasonable that some tier 2/tier 3 votes end up with Space and Time as the whole genre is popular.

We could probably divided SF/F into 5 and all would be in. SF, Fantasy, Time Travel, Aliens, Surrealism etc etc

I actually voted for Space and Time Travel instead of Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I love Sci-Fi but in particular time travel films and I'm not really a fan of Fantasy films as much but if Sci-Fi is in then yeah not really need the Space and Time Travel. I just thought it would be nice to see everyone's time travel films in one place - there will be some I haven't seen.

Maybe there could be a bonus challenge in the Sci-Fi one (if it makes it) where you can count the different subgenres or mini goals etc..

There are more topics that are redundant and covered easily by other other topics also, f.e. Martial arts by action. Some people, like myself, would like more specific challenges instead of broad ones. Personally I’m kind of disappointed with the results so far with all the usual broad challenges winning again.

Yes, I suppose the specific challenges do have an appeal. I didn't mean to come across as dismissive of those who voted for them.

I suppose it's inevitable that the broader in scope challenges will win out as many will see the more specific options as being absorbable into the wider ones. I don't really see the appeal of an action challenge, to be honest. I think it would have made more sense to group that with Adventure to make an Action and Adventure Challenge. I would probably have voted for such an option.

I suppose there can always be fine-tuning around such things, and personal preference plays its part as well!

I can see both sides to this too, but in general the broader ones have more appeal (although I do keep voting for a Samurai challenge which could easily be absorbed into the Japanese challenge which i also would be voting for if it wasn't going to be every other year now). I was far more interested in a repeat of this year's Mystery/Suspense/Thriller amalgamation than I am in seeing them split off individually the way they were in the voting. But the majority will rule out, I'll just pick and choose and be grateful for months when nothing appeals so I can do my own thing.

As does Action/Adventure and possibly some others too.

On the other hand, I would not want to be in sol's shoes right now and I don't mean my comments as a criticism of how this poll is being run. As peeps said earlier, it will be interesting to see how things shake out.

While these discussions are interesting, I don't think that they actually have much relevancy at the moment.

The poll still has more than three weeks left to run. Let's leave the poll to run its course and discuss things once all the results finally come in. :)

The only challenges, except for the countries/regions I'm quite excited for are the DtCs and Silents (would prefer Silent Films over Silent Era though, even though the semantically difference only leaves out a few films).

I also voted for several of the decades, as it is a great way to get new recommendations. (Typically don't join in for genre challenges).

It is listed at the top of the page:
Challenges: Horror, TSPDT, Latin America + Caribbean, 2020 schedule
I don't think there is a need to state the deadline since it's quite visible as soon as you open the thread - "Poll runs till November 9th, 2019 etc". It's a bit different to polls like 500<400 where the deadline needs to be stated since it isn't the first thing that you see upon clicking on this thread.

I have no idea if everybody who is interested has voted yet or not. We can discuss shortening the voting period next year. The idea of having it open for a month was in order to ensure maximum opportunity for everyone who wants to have a say to have that say.
