2020 Challenges: Preliminary Poll #1

#1

Post by sol » October 2nd, 2019, 7:31 am

For the past three and a half weeks, we been discussing ideas for the 2020 Official Challenge Schedule.

The thread on this topic can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4522

In around one week's time, I will be releasing a poll for us to choose which challenge option should make the 2020 lineup. In the meantime, it is necessary for us to narrow down the dozens of genre and theme challenges proposed in order that the final poll is not too cumbersome.

On this thread, you can vote on which proposed genre/subgenre options you would like to see progress to the final poll on October 9.

NOTE: Not all genre/subgenres will be listed here since the 2019 non-permanent challenge ideas are automatically carried over to the October 9 poll.

For more information, please read the thread that I have linked to above. Just to clarify, this is a poll, not a discussion thread for ideas (that's now closed). This thread can, however, be used to clarify information regarding the ideas being voted on. And no, you don't have to vote for exactly seven options; you can vote for less. Please only vote for challenge ideas that you consider to be worthwhile for our forum to run!

Just a thought, if no one posts in these poll threads, it might be a good idea to bump them every now and again to make them more salient.

I voted for Action, Comedy, Sports, Crime and Animation. I like some ideas but 90% of martial arts films count for Action, zombie and Giallo can go with Horror and Space/Time Travel is Sci-Fi to me.

last bump: I backed animation, coming of age, crime, giallo, historical, space/time travel, and transit (which I assume means flicks taking place primarily on a conveyance)...

Preliminary Poll Results

As per last year, I will be using the total number of votes for each option to decide which ideas will progress the final poll.

On the Challenge Ideas Discussion Thread, we talked about choosing around 20 of these suggestions to progress to the final poll.

If we take all the options with 14 votes or more (indicated in blue) this would give up 21 ideas.

This to me seems like a balanced number since there are already another 22 ideas up for vote in the final poll (all 2019 options have been automatically nominated).

I am, however, happy to take feedback on this because we could instead promote all ideas with 13 votes or more. This would allow 24 ideas to progress.

I don't think it would be a great idea to let ideas progress that accumulated support from fewer than 12 or 13 board members since it will make the final poll massive. Also, it's best if participants are voting for options that actually stand a decent chance of making the cut.

I will wait at least another 18 hours before I open the final poll in order that I can take feedback on whether we should be letting all options with 13 votes or all options with 14 votes progress to the final poll.

This is how all of the genre/theme suggestions performed:

21 - Animation
21 - Comedy
19 - Run the Director (watch 3+ films per director)
18 - 1960s
18 - 1970s
18 - Blaxploitation/African American
17 - 1980s
17 - LGBTIQ+/Queer
16 - 1990s
16 - Action
16 - Cult/Grindhouse/Drive-In
16 - Shorts
15 - Degrees of Separation
15 - Giallo/Slasher
15 - Martial Arts
15 - Musical
14 - 1000<400
14 - Criterion/Masters of Cinema
14 - Doubling the Canon
14 - Re-watch
14 - Sport Movies

13 - Coming of Age
13 - Crime
13 - Space & Time Travel
12 - Historical
12 - One film from each year
12 - Spirituality/Religion
11 - French Language Cinema
11 - One film from each iCM List
10 - Counterculture films
10 - Movies from 2020
10 - New Hollywood, 1967-79
10 - Single Critic Official Lists
10 - Transit
10 - UNESCO Memory List
9 - Based on a novel
9 - Biopic
9 - Christmas/New Year's Movies
9 - Parodies & Remakes
9 - Prison
9 - Stand-Up/Live Performance
9 - Starring children
8 - Forum Lists
8 - Independent Cinema
8 - Indigenous Narratives
8 - Labor movement/workers' rights
8 - Minority Narratives
8 - Samurai
7 - Immigrant Experience
7 - String of movie titles
6 - Disabilities
5 - Zombie
4 - Royalty

What do you guys think? Should we let all options with 13+ votes or all options with 14+ votes progress to the final poll?

I wasn't an initial voter, but I'll slip in my rec anyway: include the 13s, all three of them are sweet.

Not that I'm positive I'll even get back to doing the challenges at all, mind you. I might just spend the next year rollerblading to Chile, after learning how to rollerblade.

So far I count:

- 4 votes in favour of letting 21 options (those that achieved 14+ votes) progress to the next stage

- 3 votes in favour of letting 24 options (those that achieved 13+ votes) progress to the next stage

- 1 vote for okay either way

I won't release the final poll until around 3:00am GMT, so you still have around 90 minutes left if you haven't weighed in on this yet and you want to.

(P.S: I'm not including my own vote in the count -- and I will only include it in the event of a tie)

My vote would be 24 options move on; better chance to get rid of those damned decades challenges. [/StepsOffSoapbox]

I hear ya but it looks like we might be in a minority since most of the decades are in the top ten most voted.

I personally don't care on 13 or 14 votes. Coming of Age could be a neat one but Space/Time Travel seems unnecessary since we already made scifi/fantasy permanent.

I agree that Space/Time Travel seems redundant, but Sci/Fi/Fantasy does not have a permanent spot so please vote for it if you want to see it repeat next year. Here's the ones that dare permanent for 2020 (from sol's latest poll):

Note: <400 Checks, Documentary, Film Noir and Horror will be automatically included in next year's schedule.

Oh yea, I didn't mean permanent. I just meant it was auto carried over.
