A documentary about three young men struggling to accept that they are no longer kids despite "not feeling like a grownup". It is a decent philosophical quandary, but I found the execution to be rambling and unfocused, jumping randomly between the trio. There are some heartbreaking moments (the director making his mother cry) but I found none of the three guys to be particularly enticing even if their sense of arrested development resonates.

As per Noah Baumbach norm, the script here has memorable lines and Greta Gerwig is curious, constantly perturbed by everyone pointing out the age difference between her and her stepsister to-be who she thinks is of the same generation. There is also a really intense bar scene in which we find out that she may not be as nice as she seems. Trouble is, nobody else is that likeable and the film feels populated by shrill and whiny (if eloquent) persons.

35. Hour of the Star (1985) TSPDT #1735

Image

Playing a socially awkward yet cheerful character, Marcelia Cartaxo is well cast here, but it is hard to say what exactly the film is about. She does not really change much throughout and the final couple of scenes make her whole journey seem a little pointless. The film does have its scattered beautiful moments though (Cartaxo picked up by a prospective boyfriend and gently swung through the air) but I found her more disgusting than pitiful myself.

A behind-the-scene style ballet company drama from Robert Altman, filmed like a Frederick Wiseman documentary, observing at a distance and with all conversations feeling like the camera eavesdropping. The film feels weak though whenever it follows Neve Campbell's character outside of the ballet world since she is never really developed beyond plot function, but the ballet acts are a marvel to look at with much cool lighting and choreography.

01. Terra em Transe, by Glauber Rocha (1967) 7/10

It's hard when 2 of my favorite challenges happen at the same time. Well, I managed to watch this one film... Hopefully one or two more before it's over.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Man, I don't know if I just didn't get, but I really didn't care for this overlong movie. Nothing resonated with me personally and I just didn't like the boy or any of the main characters. I know it's supposed to be a political satire, but I guess I just don't understand 1940s German/Polish politics and culture enough to get it. Oh well.
