Re: UK/Ireland Challenge (Official August 2019)
Hi guys, not taking part but I have seen many. The reviews here are good and very good in some cases. Instead of just listing a brief review at least of each film can be useful to others.
14. The Spirit of '45 (Ken Loach, 2013)
15. The Sheltering Sky (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1990)

Depressing but insightful regarding a common male attitude. I found it disturbing that he kept referring to women as "it," then realized why I had been thinking serial killer-The Silence of the Lambs.

This follow-up to Those Magnificent Men has much of the same cast and crew but new characters and a new race (this time by car). While easy to watch alone and apart from the original, this is not particularly great stuff. The film improves on its predecessor by getting to the race quicker and giving the hilarious Terry-Thomas a bigger role. Very few other characters are very interesting or appealing though and the sped-up footage is grating.

4. Jabberwocky (1977, Terry Gilliam): 6.0 - Terry Gilliam first non-Python movie was a disappointment. It's not funny enough for a comedy, but also doesn't work as a pure medieval adventure fantasy movie.
5. Mona Lisa (1986, Neil Jordan): 7.2 - Decent character movie disguised as a gangster movie with the always great Bob Hoskins in the lead.
6. Cul-de-sac (1966, Roman Polanski): 8.0 - In contrast to Jabberwocky this does work on multiple level simultaneous; it has enough suspense to work as thriller, but at the same time the eccentricity of it make it also work as a black comedy, while the surreal mis-en-scene and the setting also give it some elements of a gothic horror.

If you're the sort of person who likes going to formal dinner parties filled with strangers, where the conversation revolves around sentimentality, opera, and paeans to hospitality, then this is the movie for you. To be fair, the final 15 minutes of this movie, which shows the aftermath of the dinner party, is far more interesting and touching than what precedes it. I haven't read the Joyce story that was the source material, but I can imagine that it could be wonderful.
17. The Great White Silence (Herbert Ponting, 1924)
Well, there are definitely some deficits in this movie when it comes to filmmaking ...

- For one, it's very, very heavy on intertitles. My guess is that more than half of the runtime is intertitles. As such, it feels a lot more like a travelogue than a coherent movie.
- There's a 25-minute gull/penguin section in the middle. And while we all love penguins, it runs on a bit long.
- Also, Ponting did not accompany the actual journey to the pole, so the final 30 minutes or so is mostly excerpts from Scott's diary and previously filmed scenes of men pushing a sled or sleeping in a tent.
- And then there's the whole scene with the black cat, which is certainly not amusing now and even in the 1920s wasn't amusing for a lot of people.

There are some startlingly beautiful images. I suppose many of us have seen modern images of the Antarctic over the years, so the appeal here lies in how the imagery hints at the preternatural, the exotic, the unknown, and the sublime. Someone with a Romantic temperament can't help but see these images as an expression of Romanticism. As I watched, I tried to imagine the mentality of one of these explorers. The Antarctic is just as remote and dangerous now as it was then, but in the 1910s, it was sometimes literally off the map. The men of the Scott expedition saw places no one had ever seen, and this voyage into the unknown implies all the fascination and fear that accompany a trip to new realms. When I watched the pod of killer whales, I suddenly felt the mystery of the sea, a repose of giant and strange monsters. The irony is that the Scott expedition was partially a scientific expedition, and to record the expedition Ponting is using a camera, one of the great tools of knowledge. Even as the voyage engages with romanticism and the unknown, it clarifies the mysterious and eliminates the unknown. It carries the mark of knowledge and reason.

It is obvious that the teen marriage here will be a bumpy learning curve, but the film is boosted by a subplot involving the husband's best friend who becomes closer to him as his marriage crumbles. A closeted homosexual, the film casts ambiguity over whether the husband is aware that his friend is gay, willfully ignorant or naive. The husband is more sympathetic than the wife, but he has so much going on that it is hard to resent the imbalance.

December Challenge:
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

7. Jamaica Inn (1939): 7.5 - Often regarded as one of the lower tier Hitchcock, but I found this last British movie from Hitchcock very enjoyable. With its 19th century setting and oddbal gang of cutthroats it feels more like a swashbuckler than a Hitchcokian thriller. With a delightful overacting Laughton.
8. Paddington (2014): 7.0 - cute and enjoyable
9. North Sea Hijack [Ffolkes] (1979): 7.0 - decent and enjoyable old-school action thriller with Anthony Perkins as the bad guy holding offshore oil rigs ransom and Roger Moore as the eccentric genius there to stop them. And also starring James Mason and Michael Parks.

Trouble brewing beneath a calm, jovial exterior in Abrahamson's 'What Richard Did'; Jack Reynor in one of his breakthrough roles as the promising South Dublin rugby player whose fit of rage threatens his mapped-out future; the ambience of well-to-do surrounds is recognisably evoked and the mood and acting take over the screen to compelling effect:

31. 'The Krays' / 1990, Peter Medak / 8/10 / UK

35. 'We Are Moving: Memories of Miss Moriarty' / 2016, Claire Dix / 7/10 / Ireland
''On the 6th of April 1968, an outstanding event in the history of Irish music took place. A gathering was held of all the uilleann pipers in Ireland and Britain at Bettystown in County Meath. This was the first time ever such a gathering of uilleann pipers was held and, indeed, it was the first and greatest gathering of Irish musicians since the great Harpers Festival in Belfast in 1792.''
''I see in this symposium the beginning of a movement that will snowball and lead to a genuine and widespread revival of the Irish bagpipes. I can also foresee that there is an enormous amount of work to be done, in this generation and in generations to come.''
Two quotes in voiceover that open Aláin Mac Gabhann's interesting if talking heads-dominated look at NPU and their fostering of uilleann piping over recent decades.

The book (by E. Nesbitt) was a childhood favorite; we used to read it aloud every summer at my grandfather's summer cottage. I was wary of watching the movie because it centers on the father, who is rarely seen in the book. But, having seen it, I can see why they took the liberties they did - it's much less filmable then some of Nesbitt's other books. And it does capture the spirit well enough.

One of the book's delightsShow
is the narrative voice: "One of us is telling the story, but I won't say who. Perhaps you may guess, but I bet you don't." .... "Now if Oswald had been in a book, he would have put his arm around his little sister and mingled his tears with hers; as it was, he told her to dry up and stop snivelling."

If not a patch on the best of the British comedy series, this pioneer Carry On film makes for decent viewing when considered on its own. There are some particularly funny moments involving a newlywed recruit who constantly has trouble explaining his situation to others. The camerawork is quite innovative too with a remarkable pullback along a countertop (twice). The plot is very fragmented and episodic, but this is okay fun while it lasts.

One of the weaker Carry On movies, this entry carries over most of the lively cast from the first film, yet confines them to hospital beds, leading to the occasional good dialogue exchange but very few elaborate gag scenes. It is not until the final 15 minutes that the comedy properly kicks in gear as the patients sneak out of their beds, but by then it is a little late to care. Wilfrid Hyde-White and Leslie Phillips make nice cast additions though.

Less episodic and with more plot than the previous entries, this still stacks up as the best of the first three Carry Ons. The performances are energetic all round and the central dynamic is interesting with the students here trying to sabotage their headmaster's chance of a promotion elsewhere, only to inadvertently impress the outsiders visiting their school. The wordplay is better here than the elaborate practical jokes, but this is amusing stuff.

22. The Grass Is Greener (1960)

While Cary Grant being so calm about his wife's infidelity here never clicks, it is refreshingly different how he chooses to toy with the extramarital lovers in a very prim English manner, rather than fight it out. This approach does, however, lead to the film being dialogue-heavy, with not even the occasional bit of innovative Day/Hudson split screen really enlivening the material. The movie also carries on for far too long after a duel highlight.
