The <400 BlowsShow
1. In the Soup (1992) 355 checks
2. Patti Rocks (1988) 17 checks

3. Who You Think I Am (2019) 13 checks

Aided by a fake Facebook profile, a middle aged lecturer begins an online romance with a photographer half her age in this French drama that questions whether their romance can be real if he fell in love with a difference face. The final 45 minutes are weaker than the first hour, with an overly fanciful stretch and too many twists and turns that detract from the central romance. The filmmakers certainly find a perfect note to end things on though.

6. Dead along the way (Ire 16) [1st ch] - double
I have a couple of young Irish friends who I know would be laughing their heads off - I was more restrained but it was a fun black comedy.

In the future, could you please spoiler the viewings you've already posted? I copy anything that looks like new viewings into my spreadsheet where I keep scores and track stats, and that would really help me not duplicate the things I record.

Incidentally, isn't there any rule about recent movies that are <400 more because they're new than because they're obscure?

Only on the official lists, as there is little point adding The Lion King (2019) to that list on premiere date

For this challenge it doesn't matter, we wont be stuck with your choices for a year

1. In the Soup (1992) 355 checks
2. Patti Rocks (1988) 17 checks
3. Who You Think I Am (2019) 13 checks

4. Melody / S.W.A.L.K (1971) 69 checks

Image

With some lovely songs by the Bee Gees a nice turn by newcomer Tracy Hyde, this comedy is certainly pleasant enough to sit through, but the whole thing feels rather aimless until the romantic leads begin to bond - and that is more than halfway in. Some have described the film as 'cute', but this would more aptly apply were the characters half their age and more naïve to the ways of the world. The ending is admittedly quite charming though.

5. Underground (1928) 123 checks

Image

This was one of the first movies that the legendary Anthony Asquith directed, and from low camera angles that reveal actual ceilings (over a decade before Citizen Kane), to silhouette shots, to an amazing bit in which an actor directly punches into the camera (see above), the film looks great. The story though is a bit tepid. It begins okay, but the plot quickly descends into high stakes melodrama. Seeing a 1920s London Underground is cool though.

7a. Bon Voyage (1944) 323 checks
7b. Aventure malgache (1944) 277 checks
7c. The Fighting Generation (1944) 44 checks
Alfred Hitchcock's war propaganda films, while certain not on the level of even his middle tier films, are still breezily entertaining and easily better than some of his early stodgy British work like The Skins Game or Juno & the Paycock. Of the two, I think I prefer Bon Voyage but both aren't bad. Probably for Hitchcock completists only though.

8. Theeviravaathi: The Terrorist (1998) 242 checks
Well acted film about a woman contemplating performing a terrorist act. While it comes off heavy-handed at times, especially in its soundtrack and ending, it also has more nuance than I would've expected, making it worth a watch.

Training with Hinako basically features the titular character working out while talking to the screen and wearing very little clothing. Bathtime with Hinako is what it sounds like. You take a bath with her. A friend stops by way too late to prevent pervy stuff from going on. Sleeping with Hinako is probably the most unsettling of the three. You literally spend nearly an hour just watching her sleep. She wakes up to get a midnight snack at one point and she has a couple dreams... Just... wtf...

11. Lord Love a Duck (1966) 225 checks
Very 60's flick with Roddy McDowell in a kind of reverse manic pixie dream girl role. It's actually pretty funny in places but probably a little too scattered to be great.

Image
12. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin IV: Eve of Destiny (2016) 3 checks
The 4th film finds the story developing the protagonist more and the machinations leading up the big war that lasts the first two seasons and change of the main UC Gundam series. Continues to be very well done but is starting to lean more heavily into the space opera tone of the main series.

Image
13. Varieté (1925) 365 checks
While the plot of a love triangle at a circus didn't do a whole lot for me, Emil Jannings gives a great performance and it's very well made with some German Expressionist touches.

Image
14. The Octagon (1980) 357 checks
Similar to some other Chuck Norris flicks of the time in that not a lot happens for most of the movie but it ends with a pretty cool action sequence (once they get to the OCTAGON that is).

Image
15. Le grand amour (1969) 281 checks
This Pierre Etaix film is pretty funny and reminds me of Harold Lloyd meets Woody Allen on an acid trip or something.

Image
16. Twice-Told Tales (1965) 135 checks
Vincent Price offers up another AIP anthology flick, this time ditching Poe in favor of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Unfortunately it also isn't as memorable or lurid as Price's best Poe work either. The first two segments are pretty solid but the House of Seven Gables seems to suffer from trying to cram too much into a short story (why wasn't this just a full length movie on its own?). As a result, the climax feels rushed and yet also feels like the only time that tale comes alive also.

There was a full-length adaptation of The House of the Seven Gables in 1940 ... with Vincent Price as the lead! It's pretty good (https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/the ... en+gables/).

And it's on youtube:

03. 2.0* - Project Ithaca by Nicholas Humphries (2019 - Canada) -- 7 checks
Solid concept, but the execution is pretty poor and Project Ithaca often feels like a collage of other films. Some mediocre performances, boring characters and rather basic special effects make it needlessly hard to get into the film and ultimately there isn't all that much to keep you interested. This is mediocre genre filler for fans only.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks
Fine coming of age drama, where two girls learn how to balance their individual and social personas. There's also a strong focus on digital communication, but since that is so ubiquitous nowadays it doesn't really make a big impression any more. There are plenty of similar dramas, but Ichikawa's direction does give it some added flair.

02. 1.5* - The Fate of Lee Khan [Ying Chun Ge Zhi Fengbo] by King Hu (1973 - Taiwan) -- 58 checks
A lesser entry in King Hu's oeuvre. It's clear by now that he loves remote inns, but without some decent fight choreography and with a strong focus on a storyline that fails to excite, it takes way too long to get going. It's all a little disappointing, especially since Hu has some decent entries in his oeuvre that predate this one by several years.

01. La bête lumineuse, by Pierre Perrault (1982) 6/10 108 Checks

I'm not too fond of direct cinema, yet this film has an interesting approach to group dynamics, while telling us of a hunting trip in the Canadian woods...

02. The Captive, by Ceil B. DeMille (1915) 7,5/10 7 Checks

A love story during wartime. Some very cute and stressful moments. I really enjoyed it.

03. The Wonderland, by Keiichi Hara (2019) 7/10 4 Checks

Beautiful animation and artwork. I thought the plot was a little too classic and simple, though...

04. Crawl, by Alexandre Aja (2019) 4/10 150 Checks

A horror film that's not interested in realism, to the point of absurdity. The fast pacing makes it fun, but overall stupid as well...

Well alright then. :) This just makes the existence of its truncated version in Twice Told Tales even more baffling. I'll add this to my watchlist though so I can compare. Thanks for the heads up!

If not as strong as Norman Wisdom's earlier The Square Peg, this benefits greatly from the recasting of co-star Edward Chapman in another mentor role. There are also innovative point-of-view shots from a speeding gurney and madcap stunts on moving vehicles. As Wisdom gets frozen at one point, conducts dental surgery earlier etc, the film sometimes feels like a collection of skits loosely strung together, but it certainly ends on a thoughtful note.

This is a documentary about the history of pinball machines. Really, your enjoyment of this doc will be in direct proportion to your interest in pinball machines. It's a very conventional doc with a host of characters who love pinball - so if that's your thing, go for it.

Of course, Wife wins with the comment: "I have never loved you more than when you didn't ask me to watch that with you."
