I'll play, but I'm not going to change my viewing habits for the challenge. But 80 of my last 100 checks are <400 anyway.

1. Eric Clapton: A Life in 12 Bars 2017 (37 checks)

Since it'll pass 400 checks within a day or two, let me just insert a random gripe about how crummy the new Tarantino film is.
How about that? The last five shorts I watched are all <400 and add up to exactly 60 minutes.

2. Elli (2016) + Deep Red (2012) + The Tickle King (2017) + 33/77: Keine Donau (1977) + Porgu (1983) total checks: 124

Hmm, shame we're doing this in August, will be on vacation for a week or two.
Also slightly odd there's no exception rule for more recent films. It's not that hard to get <400 entries if you're watching 2019 films.

01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks
Fine coming of age drama, where two girls learn how to balance their individual and social personas. There's also a strong focus on digital communication, but since that is so ubiquitous nowadays it doesn't really make a big impression any more. There are plenty of similar dramas, but Ichikawa's direction does give it some added flair.

02. 1.5* - The Fate of Lee Khan [Ying Chun Ge Zhi Fengbo] by King Hu (1973 - Taiwan) -- 58 checks
A lesser entry in King Hu's oeuvre. It's clear by now that he loves remote inns, but without some decent fight choreography and with a strong focus on a storyline that fails to excite, it takes way too long to get going. It's all a little disappointing, especially since Hu has some decent entries in his oeuvre that predate this one by several years.

1. The Return of Count Yorga (1971) 65 Checks
With this one, I'm back at platinum on They Shoot Zombies! Woo!

Image
2. Guava Island (2019) 195 Checks
This was an odd bird, a kind of Childish Gambino music movie featuring Donald Glover as a musician (a real stretch, yea?) who's putting on a festival on a small politically repressed island. Vibrant but pretty brief.

Image
3. Romeo and Juliet (1954) 325 Checks
A pretty by-the-numbers version of the play done in a typical Hollywood fashion of the time. It's fine if you are a Shakespeare nut, but there's nothing new that will convert those looking for something fresh.

Image
4. The Last Performance (1927) 69 Checks
A pretty middling silent melodrama involving a magician, a love triangle and murder that's elevated by the great Conrad Veldt in a part he could play in his sleep.

Image
5. An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn (2018) 117 Checks
From Jim Hoskins of The Greasy Strangler comes another bizarre ass, Napoleon Dynamite meets Tim & Eric joint with an absolutely STACKED cast featuring the likes of Craig Robinson, Jermaine Clement, Aubrey Plaza, Matthew Berry and Emile Hirsch. I found it pretty fascinating to watch despite (or maybe because of) the intentionally terrible histronics and dialogue and he bangin' synth score which was also a highlight of The Greasy Strangler.

Image
6. Kidou senshi Gandamu: The Origin III - Akatsuki no houki (2016) 3 Checks
Gundam: Origin is a series of direct-to-video films that tell the origins (of course) of the main protagonist Amuro Ray (although he doesn't even get mentioned until the third movie) and to a greater extent the main antagonist Char. These films have very high production values for an OVA (basically a direct-to-video anime in Japan) and are very well-written regardless of your interest in giant robots fighting an interstellar war. Much of the story thus far has been very character-driven and involving sinister political machinations. Also while a knowledge of the original Gundam series enhances the viewing experience of these movies, I'd still say they are pretty great even if you had no prior knowledge.

Neither protagonist is especially likeable in this road trip movie, conversing like horny teenagers despite being well into their thirties. The chemistry between them is undeniable though and the film is even a bit of a testament to friendship as the pair gradually become best mates again very quickly despite initial friction over how long it has been since they have seen one another. Their trip also does not quite go to plan with some character growth.

A challenge so obscure you probably haven't heard of it.Show
1. Whitney Cummings: Can I Touch It? (2019, 4 checks)
2. Death of a President (2006, 306 Checks)
Rewatch. I was shocked to learn this was a double (UK-made). This is fucking fantastic. It's a fictional documentary about the assassination of President Bush and the search to find the assassin. But it's not about the assassination of the president - it's about the rampant Islamophobia in the US and what it can lead to. It has the look and feel of a quality documentary, blending real archival footage with (fictional) interviews. Good tension build throughout the doc and never boring. Honestly, this is one of (if not the) best films about the USA zeitgeist in the mid-to-late 2000s (and to a slightly different extent, today) that I've seen.

Same here. There was a reason and we talked about it in some other thread, but I already forgot, just like I'll soon completely forget about this movie. I watched it a month ago. Rated it low, but not that low, just like you. 4/10

I rarely open challenge-threads, because I don't bother participating, but this seemed fun enough to join. But then I see the leading user has seen 22 titles in two days. Jeez, is that normal? Anyway, I've seen 5 titles in the first two days, but only one has less than 400 checks.

Same thing, but with John Byner the driving force bwhind the TV series Bizarre which was done with much of the same humor. The fact that adults used to do party games for laughs just seem odd in 2019.

3. 3rd Night (2017) - 3 Checks
Slow and uneventful home invasion movie. There is a small twist, but nothing too exciting about this film.
SpoilerShow
1. Headless (2014) - 2 Checks
2. Julie's Smile (2013) - 1 Check
3. 3rd Night (2017) - 3 Checks

4. Poitin (1978) - 7 Checks

I wanted to watch this for the Around the World challenge as it's the first film in the Irish Gaelic language but I never got round to it. It wasn't bad.

23. Intermezzo (1936) Sweden 2 official lists 163 checks [double]
24. Kona fer í stríð (2018) Iceland | France | Ukraine 167 checks
25. Hologram Man (1995) USA 18 checks
26. The Christmas Tree (1991) USA | Brazil 10 checks
The most despicable person in any christmas special, maybe in any special at all.
27. The Sex and Violence Family Hour (1983) USA 3 checks
Skit show with Jim Carrey, 21. Trying to do Monty Python/Benny Hill but raunchier. Result: Not funny.
28. Party Games for Adults Only (1984) USA 1 check
Same thing, but with John Byner the driving force bwhind the TV series Bizarre which was done with much of the same humor. The fact that adults used to do party games for laughs just seem odd in 2019.
29. Wheeler (1975) USA 10 checks
Linnea Quigley was also part of that Byner special, so doing 2 in a row; this movies is actually her debut. Not really noteworty for any other reason.
30. Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare (1987) Canada 1 official list 164 checks
31. Rocktober Blood (1984) USA 31 checks
32. Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984) USA 30 checks
Rock beat scissors. All these 3 has some great set pieces but overall terrible plots. One extra applause Roctober which has a singer that deserves a much better movie.
33. Gentlemen's Relish (2001) UK 6 checks [triple]
34. The Secret Policeman's Ball (1979) UK 20 checks [double]
2x Billy Connolly. SPB also have John Cleese just to be sure that they are two different people.
Have you really seen 34 movies in three days? I'm kind of concerned. I hope you're still eating and sleeping.

5. Flashback (1969) - 17 Checks

Not sure why I had this one on my watchlist but it's one where it's rating doesn't match with what I watched. 5/10 from me.

I haven't done the math on all of alba's viewings, but The Christmas Tree at least is only 43 minutes long - so he might not be spending quite as long glued to the screen at it seems.
