Uh hm.... Well, if you're gonna go out, there are worse ways, I'd imagine...
Surely you can say something nicer about the film that likely inspired Tom Six to make The Human Centipede. :folded: Also watched it earlier this month and thought that it played out like a Cronenberg body horror film minus the horror.
Actually it did hold me in silence wondering what the final orifices to be plugged would be beyond the mouth.. .

55. The Bitch (1979) UK 41 checks [triple]
The "sequel" (following a suppoerting character from The Stud), but this never get out of Pulp Fiction territory. Rich people having orgies.
56-58. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1990) UK 56 checks (2 checks on every episode) [triple]
Lesbian in an extremely christian conservative family.
59. Up the Chastity Belt (1972) UK 11 checks [double]
I do have Up Pompeii (both the movie and TV series) on DVD, so I might see those later this month. But diesn't really find Frankie Howerd all that funny.
60. Confessions of a Window Cleaner (1974) UK 56 checks [triple]
61. Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975) UK 28 checks [double]
62. Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) UK 27 checks [double]
There's one family starring in all these movies, every one is switched with the new plot. So the strangest thing is when someone plays different roles in two movies when they are canonical in sequence. At the end they even mention what the next will be about. In this last one he mentions plumbers but there were no more movies. But the Adventures- movies which was made in the same period made a Plumber movie the next year instead.
63. Adventures of a Plumber's Mate (1978) UK 18 checks [double]
64. Adventures of a Private Eye (1977) UK 18 checks [double]
Same actor and director, but not really sequels.
65. Secrets of a Door-to-Door Salesman (1973) UK 2 checks [double]
It was never a Secrets- series. Probably a good thing, Adventures, Confessions, Carry On and Up were more than enough.

Netflix doing a Mallick? Surprising! Somehow this got quite a few watchers from MovieMeter and they voted it into their all time top 1000.

10. 0.5* - The Mind's Eye by Jan Nickman (1990 - USA) -- 159 checks
A collection of short segments that explores the possibilities of computer animation. Not only has this film aged terribly, the lack of aesthetic appeal and the horrendous soundtrack make things infinitely worse. It might have turned some heads back in the day, but apart from historic relevance there's really no reason to watch this one in our day and age.

11. 2.0* - The Pied Piper of Hamelin [Krysar] by Jirí Barta (1986 - Czechoslovakia/West Germany) -- 236 checks
The woodcut stop-motion look is quite unique, but that's about the only thing that makes this animation worth watching. The plot is stale, the animation and camera work are very limited and the music is disappointing. It's a shame Barta wasn't able to create something more appealing from all this, because the potential was clearly there.

12. 3.5* - Nekrotronic by Kiah Roache-Turner (2019 - Australia) -- 11 checks
Amusing mix of comedy, horror and sci-fi that felt like the next, logical step for director Roache-Turner. Think Pokemon meets Ghostbusters. The film has some pacing issues and the acting is rather poor (even veterans like Bellucci seem to have trouble finding the right tone), but there's plenty of fun to be had and that's clearly what the makers were after.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks
Fine coming of age drama, where two girls learn how to balance their individual and social personas. There's also a strong focus on digital communication, but since that is so ubiquitous nowadays it doesn't really make a big impression any more. There are plenty of similar dramas, but Ichikawa's direction does give it some added flair.

02. 1.5* - The Fate of Lee Khan [Ying Chun Ge Zhi Fengbo] by King Hu (1973 - Taiwan) -- 58 checks
A lesser entry in King Hu's oeuvre. It's clear by now that he loves remote inns, but without some decent fight choreography and with a strong focus on a storyline that fails to excite, it takes way too long to get going. It's all a little disappointing, especially since Hu has some decent entries in his oeuvre that predate this one by several years.

03. 2.0* - Project Ithaca by Nicholas Humphries (2019 - Canada) -- 7 checks
Solid concept, but the execution is pretty poor and Project Ithaca often feels like a collage of other films. Some mediocre performances, boring characters and rather basic special effects make it needlessly hard to get into the film and ultimately there isn't all that much to keep you interested. This is mediocre genre filler for fans only.

04. 2.5* - And Everything Is Going Fine by Steven Soderbergh (2010 - USA) -- 319 checks
Nice doc on Spalding Gray, though maybe a little too focused on his work and monologues. While they are primarily stories about himself and his family, Gray literally explains their poetic foundation, which makes them less fit for a documentary. Even so, a decent portrait of a man with an interesting life and fine career.

05. 3.5* - Brightburn by David Yarovesky (2019 - USA) -- 289 checks (seriously though - this had a wide release?)
A pretty amusing, evil take on Superman. The horror beats are surprisingly effective while the superhero nonsense clearly takes a back seat. It's a shame the film isn't mean-spirited enough, though the ending does its best to add some extra grit to the film. A welcome variation on some tired old tropes, but the execution lacked that extra bit of spice.

06. 1.5* - The Hustle by Chris Addison (2019 - USA) -- 128 checks (I'll just turn this into the failed blockbuster challenge)
A poor and lifeless comedy that fails to be funny, smart and/or witty. Wilson is her charming self, but the rest of the cast is extremely stiff and boring. Chris Addison isn't much of a director and the writing is predictable, with hardly any jokes landing. The Southern France vibe gives the film some charm, but that's the only nice thing I have to say about this one.

07. 1.0* - Enter the Anime by Alex Burunova (2019 - USA/Japan) -- 7 checks
If you really want to know more about anime, I'm sure there must be better docs than this one. It's really just an ad in disguise, touting a couple of Netflix animes while treating Japan like some kind of alien world. The narration is irritating, the topics are mind boggling and 60 minutes is way too short, even for an introduction in to the world of Japanese animation.

08. 3.5* - Rim of the World by McG (2019 - USA) -- 158 checks
McG isn't very shy about his inspiration here, at the same time all these influences are just that: influences. Rim of the World is a film that is primarily focused on being as fun and amusing as possible. Be damned plot, background story and consistency. This is probably not the most popular approach, but it sure is my preferred one for nonsensical films like this.

09. 3.5* - Crawl by Alexandre Aja (2019 - USA) -- 165 checks
A surprisingly effective croc-chiller from Alexandre Aja. Not really a big fan of this particular niche, but Aja managed to make it tense and exciting. Crawl is little more than a neat little genre film, warts and all, but if you manage to look past the leaps of logic then there's a lot of fun to be had here. Not a must-see, but horror fans are sure to have a good time.

6. Heroic Purgatory 1970 (178 checks)...hard to follow, but spellbinding. Added it to my <400 list.

Uh, I've watched two episodes of Showtime's "The Loudest Voice" mini-series during August...do those count? The issue is extra-tricky because ICM had no page for this mini-series until I added it myself. Then I added pages for the individual episodes too. Except that I don't want to check off the individual episodes. Just the overall series. And IMDb doesn't have runtimes for either the series or its episodes. Ugh.

So....

7. The Loudest Voice: 2015 2019 (1 check) [the episodes were approximately 49 minutes apiece]
8. The Loudest Voice: 2016 2019 (1 check)

3. Peterloo 2018 (100 checks)
4. Hit So Hard 2011 (55 checks)
5. The Muse 2014 (2 checks) + Fortune Cookie 1991 (68 checks) + Beyond the Line of Duty 1942 (26 checks) [14 min + 32 min + 22 min...I don't know if I carry over those extra 8 min or what]

4. No Name on the Bullet (1959) 158 checks

5. The League of Gentlemen (1960) 381 checks

6. Peterloo (2018) 103 checks

7. Hi-Life (1998) 11 checks
Hi-Life Bar and Grill is a bar and restaurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where I've lived for most of my life. I've been there maybe six times and walked past it hundreds of times. But it was not until last week, when I met a friend for dinner there, that I noticed a poster on the back wall for a movie called Hi-Life. I thought at first it might be a fake poster, just something promotional for the bar, but sure enough it is a real movie that is partly set in the actual Hi-Life. And it was available on amazon so I decided to watch it despite only having 10 checks and a bad imdb rating. It's OK! It reminded me a lot of the underrated Dinner Rush in being a New York restaurant/bar-based ensemble comedy/drama/crime movie that takes place in a single night. And it features a pretty noteworthy array of actors for a completely forgotten movie: Daryl Hannah, Eric Stoltz, Campbell Scott, Charles Durning, Dean Cameron (who I recognized from his guest spot on It's Always Sunny), and the first credited movie role for a very young Michael Pitt. There are some genuine laughs here, but I admit the main appeal for me was seeing the neighborhood of my youth, an Upper West Side I far prefer to the one that exists now.

8. They Might Be Giants (1971) 367 checks
A frustrated professional woman is slowly drawn into a folie a deux by a man driven to delusion by his grief. The movie is supposed to be romantic and comedic (and there are a few laughs), but I thought it quite sad. And boring.

48. Chunhyangdyun (2000) 245 checks
Beautiful and sad story but the constantly singing narration took some time to get used to.

Image
49. Kagerô-za (1981) 78 checks
Very appropriately bizarre Seijun Suzuki flick that I'm honestly not even sure what the hell was happening half the time. Yet it was strangely compelling to watch anyway,

Image
50. Love at First Bite (1979) 257 checks
"Creatures of the night... SHUT UP!" Man, this was a silly ass movie. George Hamilton chews some major scenery as the Count courting a woman of less than pure repute while a descendent of Van Helsing seeks to cockblock in the most final way possible.

Image
51. Fedora (1978) 335 checks
This story, directed by Billy Wilder, beginning with a death and focusing on an aging actress can't help but be compared to Wilder's masterpiece Sunset Boulevard but just doesn't hold up. The movie gets bogged down in endless exposition, especially once the whole scheme is revealed, and really has little emotional payoff. Not one of Wilder's better movies...

Image
52. Bad Black (2016) 19 checks
Wakaliwood 4EVA! This story of an ex-pat doctor turned murderous mercenary pursing the thief Black after training with a small child named Wesley Snipes is pretty damned amazing. From the same folks that brought you Who Killed Captain Alex, Bad Black offers up the same extreme low budget lunacy with our old friend the video joker in tow.

Image
53a. Pigs! (1965) 10 checks
53b. Crystallization (1974) 9 checks
53c. The Perils of Priscilla (1969) 11 checks
A trio of shorts from Carroll Ballard, the director of The Black Stallion, offers some smaller scale animal and nature stories that are worth watching for fans of such things. Crystallization in particular offers up some spectacular visuals spawned from nature to an appropriately electric soundtrack that I would recommend to fans of experimental cinema.

Image
53d. España 68 (El hoy es malo pero el mañana es mío) (1968) 16 checks
Honestly, I just find it really hard to get into these regional political documentaries that seem to populate the Amos Vogel list.

Image
54. Rigoletto (1946) 5 checks
I feel like my last post might've been a little dismissive of opera, so I decided to give it a fair shake. My conclusion? Yea, I just really don't like opera. The singing is not my cup of tea, and the acting, especially of the jester, was incredibly overwrought. The storyline in general was also ultimately quite depressing. I'm honestly kind of surprised a movie readily available online and on an official list has so few checks though.

Image
55. Manborg (2011) 226 checks
"The human spirit will never be obsolete!" Manborg is amazing. This is an awesome movie to watch with a group, like a slightly more toned down Kung Fury with an even lower budget and twice the runtime. It is legitimately funny and endearing if a little gimmicky.

Image
56. The Face of Marble (1946) 31 checks
This was kind of an offbeat Frankenstein-meets-voodoo shenanigans plot with a love triangle thrown in. It's workman-like and watchable but nothing amazing.

8. The Loudest Voice: 2016 2019 (1 check)

...or not.
Yep - you're good. We're using the check count for the entire series, so what you reported is exactly right.

Yeah, I think it's because it's boring and only film-ish. Mostly just a recording of a stage opera.

Incidentally, my ICM claim to fame is that I was the first to check that film. It's my only official "first to check" film. (Anyone is free to bow before my amazingness. :P )

If faithful to its source novel, this film spins a coincidence heavy story that does not quite have enough charm to make up for it. A big problem is the wordy first half - so jam-packed with title cards that the experience is more like reading a picture book. The title cards ease off a bit towards the end, but even then, the filmmaking approach is hardly innovative, a few choice high camera angles aside. There are a few thrills towards the middle though.

23. Dickshark (2016, 6 Checks)
I've been on a shark movie kick, and when I found this interestingly-titled film, I had to go for it. And yeah - exactly what it sounds like. A penis-enlargement experiment goes awry, and a guy's penis mutates into a shark. Obviously, this is a problem, culminating in his girlfriend shooting the dickshark off him and flushing it down the toilet. Then they try to capture the dickshark. This could have been a fun 80-minute movie, but it's a 170 minute uncut mess. The first 15 minutes or so were funny with some clever low-budget jokes, but the rest of the film alternated between long lingering shots of female genitals, dickshark attacks, and semi-scientific ramblings of the director.

I'm sure it's better, but that's still too long.

I liked Ken Burn's The Vietnam War, it's probably the best left-liberal critique of the war. I voted all episodes in the range of 6-8/10. However there are some things I didn't like: There's no analysis of which banks and enterprises profited from the war and how the presidents and staff were connected with which Wall Street firms and how these networks influenced policy. It can be surmised somewhat when we are told that key persons knew the War made no sense yet started it and carried it on. it also portrays Eisenhower and Kennedy as person who acted according to their ideology when their opportunism seems evident to me.
Also it partly glorifies US soldiers and needlessly ridicules the more radical part of the anti-war movement. It doesn't condemn the military-industrial complex per se, only its most vile outgrowths. It mostly neglects the welfare-walfare component of the US system, only a brief segment deals superficially with Johnson supporting King and the civil rights movement. I would also have welcomed it if the doc explored how Western state-capitalist colonialism drove "underdeveloped" countries toward communism.
As I didn't know anything about the Vietnam War before, I found it formidably informative and watching it was extremely rewarding for me. Notwithstanding the cautions of the last paragraph, I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the war.

I'm with you on a fair amount of that - your first paragraph sounds like stuff I'd like to know more about, but I think that would have to be a separate doc/miniseries. Good stuff there, I just think it was beyond the scope of the series.

I didn't get a lot of glorification of US soldiers. I liked having some of the personal stories of people in the war sprinkled in, as it helped bring an emotional connection to the series, rather than a rote reflection of facts. I actually thought the series was quite fair towards soldiers, telling some "heroic" stories as well as some terrible stories of atrocities, and largely portraying the masses as faceless cogs in a machine being poorly run by people in power. And I didn't mind the critique of the anti-war movement. Some of the other stuff you mention would also be cool to see a doc on.

I liked the series overall, and found it to be the most informative one I've seen about the progression of the war and how the battles and years fit into US culture in the 60s and 70s. So many more intricate piece can (and should) be examined, but this is a great start.

10. Édouard et Caroline (Jacques Becker, 1951) 8/10 103 checks ... Overall, an excellent French comedy, taking us through a series of ridiculous situations mostly set at a society party. My only complaint is that the ending seemed a tad disjointed from the rest of the film. But I can definitely see why Kubrick and Cahiers were fans.
