33. The Brainwashing of My Dad (2015) 39 checks
I'm not going to get overly political here but I will say that I am totally on-board with like 90% of the message of this movie (and really the only thing I don't necessarily agree with is its implication that the left doesn't employ any such tactics themselves).

Image
34. Kaze no tairiku a.k.a. The Weathering Continent (1992) 16 checks
It has some interesting ideas but feels overly rushed with little character development. I do like the Japanese folklore blender of concepts it throws out at times though.

Image
35. The Clairvoyant (1935) 53 checks
This one feels very creaky at times with a pretty anti-climactic courtroom sequence at the end that feels suited to a very different kind of movie.

Image
36. Kidô senshi Gandamu II: Ai senshihen a.k.a. Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow (1981) 64 checks
While the pacing of the second Gundam summary movie isn't quite as good as the first with it's origins as episodic television coming off a little more obviously, it still has some great moments in it with some thrilling battle sequences and tragic deaths. The end definitely feels like a middle movie though, just kind of petering out and waiting on the big finale to get going.

Image
37. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) 22 checks
For a PG-13 movie, this one actually had some pretty solid, scary sequences in it and would make a good introduction to horror flicks for a tween to early teen that want to get their feet wet without diving headfirst into Hostel or Martyrs right off the bat. It does have some story problems and overly convenient plot contrivances to manifest some of the titular scary stories but overall it was still a pretty watchable spook flick for the whole family!

Yeah, I quite enjoyed that doc; it did a nice job at documenting (pun somewhat intended) how our opinions and views are shaped by what we choose to consume and where we get it. I see so much of that in my in-laws, who get their news from Fox News at the "liberal" end and other increasingly right-wing sources (e.g., Breitbart, Alex Jones).

@jeroeno: Congrats on the bronze!

A challenge so obscure you probably haven't heard of it.Show
1. Whitney Cummings: Can I Touch It? (2019, 4 checks)
2. Death of a President (2006, 306 Checks)
3. Bill Hicks: Relentless (1992, 290 checks)
4. Bill Hicks: Revelations (1993, 284 checks)
5. Special When Lit (2009, 73 checks)
"6-12. The Eighties (2016, 7 eps. x 18 checks)
The Eighties: Raised on Television (2016)
The Eighties: The Reagan Revolution (2016)
The Eighties: The Fight Against AIDS (2016)
The Eighties: Tear Down This Wall (2016)
The Eighties: The Tech Boom (2016)
The Eighties: Greed is Good (2016)
The Eighties: Video Killed the Radio Star (2016)"
13. Meet the Patels (2014, 169 Checks)
"14-16. Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery (2017, 3 eps. x 2 checks)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: Sex, Lies, and Missing Interns (2017)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: The Predator in the Park (2017)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: He Called himself Phoenix (2017)"
17. Fyre Fraud (2019, 279 Checks)
Watched both this and the Netflix version (Fyre) back-to-back, and they're both worthwhile, but Fraud is the only one that counts here. Anyway, this one focuses on the fraud aspect of the Fyre Festival and the shitty things the CEO did. I definitely felt bad for a lot of the workers who didn't get paid and were hurt by the fraud, but I didn't feel bad for anyone who attended. Certainly did nothing to change my hatred of social media.

18-19: Annecy Shorts (136m):
Monsieur Tete (1959, 204 Checks, 13m)
Repete (1995, 321 Checks, 8m)
Hen, His Wife (1990, 270 Checks, 13m)
La demoiselle et le violoncelliste (1965, 278 Checks, 9m)
The Lion and the Song (1959, 212 Checks, 16m)
Great (1975, 208 Checks, 25m)
Hotel E (1992, 222 Checks, 28m)
Egged On (1926, 317 Checks, 24m)

And this is my platinum on this list. I was near the end and nothing stood out, though Egged On was kinda cool to see cars come out of eggs. Onto new lists...

Image

This resembles Yellow Submarine more than anything else with psychedelic song sequences set to vivid colours - and an absolutely wild sequence in which magical fruit and vegetables try to slaughter the hippo and a young boy who he befriends. The film is beset by some inconsistencies in terms of whether the hippo can understand human language or not and it is a little sappy, but the zany sound effects and visuals constantly enliven things.

09. Daikanbu - burai / Outlaw Gangster VIP 2, by Keiichi Ozawa (1968) 7/10 18 Checks

It's produced like a serial, but this Yakuza series is quite enjoyable, the production values are pretty good...

38. Covek nije tica a.k.a. Man is not a Bird (1965) 206 checks
Dusan Makavejev's first film starts out in a much more traditional way than many of his later much more surreal films but by the end, his bizarre sensibilities are coming to fruition. I honestly had trouble staying focus on the movie in the first half but it picks up.

Image
39. The Dark Side to Love a.k.a. Gretta (1984) 7 checks
This is the full-length film version of the suicide club segment of Night Train to Terror (which Vinegar Syndrome so graciously included as an extra on their blu-ray release of Night Train). While the Night Train segment comes off weird enough out of context, the full movie is somehow even weirder, involving an upstanding guy who falls for Gretta, a porn actress cum cabaret performer who pulls him into the suicide club shenanigans only to fake her death and change her sex and name for reasons beyond me. One final trip to the suicide club with a wrecking ball game is all it takes to get over her.

40. Ådalen 31 (1969) 194 checks
A very slow-paced film based on a true story about a workers strike that culminates in several people being shot and killed, Adalen 31 is well-made but honestly not really my cup of tea.

09. 3.5* - Crawl by Alexandre Aja (2019 - USA) -- 165 checks
A surprisingly effective croc-chiller from Alexandre Aja. Not really a big fan of this particular niche, but Aja managed to make it tense and exciting. Crawl is little more than a neat little genre film, warts and all, but if you manage to look past the leaps of logic then there's a lot of fun to be had here. Not a must-see, but horror fans are sure to have a good time.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks
Fine coming of age drama, where two girls learn how to balance their individual and social personas. There's also a strong focus on digital communication, but since that is so ubiquitous nowadays it doesn't really make a big impression any more. There are plenty of similar dramas, but Ichikawa's direction does give it some added flair.

02. 1.5* - The Fate of Lee Khan [Ying Chun Ge Zhi Fengbo] by King Hu (1973 - Taiwan) -- 58 checks
A lesser entry in King Hu's oeuvre. It's clear by now that he loves remote inns, but without some decent fight choreography and with a strong focus on a storyline that fails to excite, it takes way too long to get going. It's all a little disappointing, especially since Hu has some decent entries in his oeuvre that predate this one by several years.

03. 2.0* - Project Ithaca by Nicholas Humphries (2019 - Canada) -- 7 checks
Solid concept, but the execution is pretty poor and Project Ithaca often feels like a collage of other films. Some mediocre performances, boring characters and rather basic special effects make it needlessly hard to get into the film and ultimately there isn't all that much to keep you interested. This is mediocre genre filler for fans only.

04. 2.5* - And Everything Is Going Fine by Steven Soderbergh (2010 - USA) -- 319 checks
Nice doc on Spalding Gray, though maybe a little too focused on his work and monologues. While they are primarily stories about himself and his family, Gray literally explains their poetic foundation, which makes them less fit for a documentary. Even so, a decent portrait of a man with an interesting life and fine career.

05. 3.5* - Brightburn by David Yarovesky (2019 - USA) -- 289 checks (seriously though - this had a wide release?)
A pretty amusing, evil take on Superman. The horror beats are surprisingly effective while the superhero nonsense clearly takes a back seat. It's a shame the film isn't mean-spirited enough, though the ending does its best to add some extra grit to the film. A welcome variation on some tired old tropes, but the execution lacked that extra bit of spice.

06. 1.5* - The Hustle by Chris Addison (2019 - USA) -- 128 checks (I'll just turn this into the failed blockbuster challenge)
A poor and lifeless comedy that fails to be funny, smart and/or witty. Wilson is her charming self, but the rest of the cast is extremely stiff and boring. Chris Addison isn't much of a director and the writing is predictable, with hardly any jokes landing. The Southern France vibe gives the film some charm, but that's the only nice thing I have to say about this one.

07. 1.0* - Enter the Anime by Alex Burunova (2019 - USA/Japan) -- 7 checks
If you really want to know more about anime, I'm sure there must be better docs than this one. It's really just an ad in disguise, touting a couple of Netflix animes while treating Japan like some kind of alien world. The narration is irritating, the topics are mind boggling and 60 minutes is way too short, even for an introduction in to the world of Japanese animation.

08. 3.5* - Rim of the World by McG (2019 - USA) -- 158 checks
McG isn't very shy about his inspiration here, at the same time all these influences are just that: influences. Rim of the World is a film that is primarily focused on being as fun and amusing as possible. Be damned plot, background story and consistency. This is probably not the most popular approach, but it sure is my preferred one for nonsensical films like this.

20. 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012, 242 Checks)
21. The Last Man on the Moon (2014, 141 Checks)
This is documentary about Eugene Cernan, the last person to walk on the moon. It takes you through the history of Nasa and his involvement and how he related to various missions. Nice historical perspective and some great photography included. If you're interested in space and the moon landings, it's worth watching. On Netflix.

22. Erotic Survivor (2001, 8 Checks)
From the director The Erotic Witch Project, one of ICM's few official adult films, comes this gem, an erotic parody of the reality TV series Survivor. Honestly, this was hilarious. I actually watched the first season of Survivor, and this film was a remarkably good parody of it. There was the guy in Survivor who walked around naked all the time; one of the girls walked around naked all the time in this film. Survivor has random stupid games that don't matter; this film had randomer stupider games that don't matter. Survivor liked to play up the drama between the more conservative people and those less inhibited; this movie it to a more ridiculous level (i.e., the really Christian guy named "Christian" and the woman who worked as a censor at the censorship office). The random confessionals. The over-the-top host. It all worked. And sprinkle in sex scenes that mock porn parodies and are still in the spirit of Survivor (I mean, of COURSE there was a lesbian orgy scene in a mud pit), and you have a funny erotica film. By no means good, but an enjoyable diversion.

The first half of this horror-comedy is very low stakes without much sense of urgency or impending danger regarding a zombie plague. Things pick up well in the second half though as a sweet romance blossoms between an undead cheerleader and the loner protagonist who is unaware of her condition. The film also features a chic send-up of Michael Jackson's Thriller video set to a similarly catchy song (see above) and the makeup effects are solid.

This documentary depicts the final two weeks in the life of a death row inmate. While the topic is harrowing, the way convicted Edward Earl Johnson remains cool and calm throughout is very interesting with lots of lucid conversations filmed during his final days. The documentarians also interview the prison staff and obtain curious opinions about the death penalty as well as Johnson's innocence/guilt. If a tad biased, the approach really resonates.

41. Seven Servants (1996) 17 checks
Uh hm.... Well, if you're gonna go out, there are worse ways, I'd imagine...

Image
42. Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) 11 checks
"Can you say deadly neuro-toxicity?" My kid wanted to go see this yesterday, so I did the 'good parent' thing and steeled myself for a garbage movie. Honestly though, it wasn't bad. Legitimately amusing in places with some fairly clever jokes playing off the conventions of the TV series, Dora moves at a brisk pace offering a kind of Indiana Jones-lite for the tween set. Isabella Moner, from the ersatz Mickey Mouse Club-esque Nickelodeon TV stable, is pretty perfectly cast as the relentlessly positive, bubbly Dora and Benecio Del Toro seems to be enjoying hamming it up as Swiper. Yea, it has fart and poo jokes for the kids, but really, you could do a lot worse if your kid is wanting to go to the movies this weekend.

Image
43. Todd Barry: Spicy Honey (2017) 44 checks
I've always enjoyed Todd Barry's low-key faux-braggadocio persona and this stand up delivers more in the same style.

Image
44. The Exile (1931) 59 checks
This very early talkie melodrama featuring a primarily African American cast, while certainly of historical significance and value, just doesn't hold up very well as a narrative with a hackneyed script and some fairly poor acting.

Image
45. Kidô senshi Gandamu III: Meguriai sorahen a.k.a. Mobile Suit Gundam III: Place in the Encounter (1982) 57 checks
The big finale of the original Mobile Suit Gundam that kicked off the whole 40 year shebang, it offers a fittingly climactic battle with loved ones lost and an intense (but not final) confrontation between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. I am definitely interested in continuing on to the next series (Zeta Gundam) but will probably take a break for a little while after the 6 Origin movies and then the following three 2.5 hour original Gundam movies.

Image
46. The Grass Is Greener (1960) 339 checks
A light frisky marital shenanigans comedy with Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum from the legendary Stanley Donen. Like a lot of these types of comedies, it's fun while it lasts with some zippy, amusing dialogue but doesn't leave a lasting impression.

Image
47. One Night of Love (1934) 162 checks
I really had trouble getting into this 'Star Is Born at the Opera' type story. I mean, part of it is that I find it really hard to get into most Opera I've heard but it also just felt like a tired plot (which really probably wasn't all that tired at the time).

This Chinese science fiction venture benefits from an imaginative premise and intriguing pseudoscience. There are some truly spectacular shots - most notably, Jupiter sucking up the atmosphere of Earth as it passes by - and the moody, pulsating score is a plus. The sci-fi content is sadly often sidelined here though as mushy melodrama involving an estranged father is worked in. There are also a lot of big budget action sequences that feel mindless.

Surely you can say something nicer about the film that likely inspired Tom Six to make The Human Centipede. :folded: Also watched it earlier this month and thought that it played out like a Cronenberg body horror film minus the horror.

Sounds like the worst thing you could say about any movie
