This British comedy benefits from an intriguing heist premise, but never quite capitalises on it as one of the complications is a change of jail warden. This results in a ton of non-heist related shenanigans as the trio clash with the new warden and play pranks on him like setting off an explosion in the prison quarry. Things improve a little bit as the heist eventually works its way back into focus, but even then this is a bit of a middling effort with none of the three main players in especially good form - including an overly and oddly subdued Peter Sellers. Wilfrid Hyde-White offers great support though.

With its portrait of African American prisoners exploited by corrupt wardens who entice them to bash each other up in illegal boxing matches, Penitentiary has acquired an understandable following, but there is little to it beyond this paradigm. A significant stretch consists solely of boxing fights interspersed with non-graphic copulation scenes. Floyd 'Wildcat' Chatman has several strong moments here though as an ageing prisoner and mentor.

A challenge so obscure you probably haven't heard of it.Show
1. Whitney Cummings: Can I Touch It? (2019, 4 checks)
2. Death of a President (2006, 306 Checks)
3. Bill Hicks: Relentless (1992, 290 checks)
4. Bill Hicks: Revelations (1993, 284 checks)
5. Special When Lit (2009, 73 checks)
"6-12. The Eighties (2016, 7 eps. x 18 checks)
The Eighties: Raised on Television (2016)
The Eighties: The Reagan Revolution (2016)
The Eighties: The Fight Against AIDS (2016)
The Eighties: Tear Down This Wall (2016)
The Eighties: The Tech Boom (2016)
The Eighties: Greed is Good (2016)
The Eighties: Video Killed the Radio Star (2016)"
13. Meet the Patels (2014, 169 Checks)
14-16. Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery (2017, 3 eps. x 2 checks)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: Sex, Lies, and Missing Interns (2017)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: The Predator in the Park (2017)
Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery: He Called himself Phoenix (2017)

I watched this because I remember the media oversaturation about the case, but I didn't really remember the conclusion. And it turns out there was a ton I didn't remember, and more twists and turns in the case than a maze. For those who don't know/remember, Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old Washington DC intern, went missing from her apartment and was eventually found dead. The prime suspect was US Congressman Gary Condit. I found it pretty interesting because of the story and my memory/interest in it, but it's a run-of-the-mill crime documentary otherwise.

06. 1.5* - The Hustle by Chris Addison (2019 - USA) -- 128 checks (I'll just turn this into the failed blockbuster challenge)
A poor and lifeless comedy that fails to be funny, smart and/or witty. Wilson is her charming self, but the rest of the cast is extremely stiff and boring. Chris Addison isn't much of a director and the writing is predictable, with hardly any jokes landing. The Southern France vibe gives the film some charm, but that's the only nice thing I have to say about this one.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks
Fine coming of age drama, where two girls learn how to balance their individual and social personas. There's also a strong focus on digital communication, but since that is so ubiquitous nowadays it doesn't really make a big impression any more. There are plenty of similar dramas, but Ichikawa's direction does give it some added flair.

02. 1.5* - The Fate of Lee Khan [Ying Chun Ge Zhi Fengbo] by King Hu (1973 - Taiwan) -- 58 checks
A lesser entry in King Hu's oeuvre. It's clear by now that he loves remote inns, but without some decent fight choreography and with a strong focus on a storyline that fails to excite, it takes way too long to get going. It's all a little disappointing, especially since Hu has some decent entries in his oeuvre that predate this one by several years.

03. 2.0* - Project Ithaca by Nicholas Humphries (2019 - Canada) -- 7 checks
Solid concept, but the execution is pretty poor and Project Ithaca often feels like a collage of other films. Some mediocre performances, boring characters and rather basic special effects make it needlessly hard to get into the film and ultimately there isn't all that much to keep you interested. This is mediocre genre filler for fans only.

04. 2.5* - And Everything Is Going Fine by Steven Soderbergh (2010 - USA) -- 319 checks
Nice doc on Spalding Gray, though maybe a little too focused on his work and monologues. While they are primarily stories about himself and his family, Gray literally explains their poetic foundation, which makes them less fit for a documentary. Even so, a decent portrait of a man with an interesting life and fine career.

05. 3.5* - Brightburn by David Yarovesky (2019 - USA) -- 289 checks (seriously though - this had a wide release?)
A pretty amusing, evil take on Superman. The horror beats are surprisingly effective while the superhero nonsense clearly takes a back seat. It's a shame the film isn't mean-spirited enough, though the ending does its best to add some extra grit to the film. A welcome variation on some tired old tropes, but the execution lacked that extra bit of spice.

Hi and thanks for hosting, maxwell. This isn't a challenge that gets me overly excited if I'm being honest (effort of verifying check counts and the fact that many of my viewings in any given month will probably be eligible) but I'll play along and note down what obscurities I see throughout the month.

1. 'Dancing at Lughnasa' / 1998, Pat O'Connor / 6 or 6.5/10 / 144 checks
2. 'Life's a Breeze' / 2013, Lance Daly / 6 or 6.5/10 / 45 checks
3. 'A Disconnected Rhythm' / 2014, Shimmy Marcus / 7/10 / 1 check
4. 'Gold' / 2014, Niall Heery / 6/10 / 30 checks
5. 'You're Ugly Too' / 2015, Mark Noonan / 7/10 / 22 checks
6. 'A Date for Mad Mary' / 2016, Darren Thornton / 9/10 / 55 checks
7. 'South' / 2016, Gerard Walsh / 7/10 / 1 check
8. 'Soulsmith' / 2017, Kevin Henry / 6/10 / 1 check
9. 'Metal Heart' / 2018, Hugh O'Conor / 6 or 6.5/10 / 2 checks
That's all, folks!

05. Age of Consent, by Michael Powell (1969) 7/10 191 Checks

06. Baron Prasil, by Karel Zeman (1962) 7,5/10 310 Checks

A lot of fantasy and imagination in the depiction of this story. The rythm is too slow, however, and the music is bland...

07. 1.0* - Enter the Anime by Alex Burunova (2019 - USA/Japan) -- 7 checks
If you really want to know more about anime, I'm sure there must be better docs than this one. It's really just an ad in disguise, touting a couple of Netflix animes while treating Japan like some kind of alien world. The narration is irritating, the topics are mind boggling and 60 minutes is way too short, even for an introduction in to the world of Japanese animation.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks

06. 1.5* - The Hustle by Chris Addison (2019 - USA) -- 128 checks (I'll just turn this into the failed blockbuster challenge)

Back from 5 weeks in the Philippines, where I only watched one movie. So rested-up and ready to watch a few obscure ones.
You're back! I was hoping you were going to come defend your title...
We'll see how well I'll do. The others of the crazy Norwegian gang have started hard. Going to be tough to keep that pace up with the rest of them, but catching-up nicely after starting the challenge 4 days late.

Image

11. Transient Lady (1935, Edward Buzzell) - 2nd check - 4/10
--- To me Transient Lady (1935) built a solid foundation of wrongful imprisonment and small town lynch mob mentality, but they fumble it with one of the weakest court cases on film, and a almost as poor plea for a innocent man's life as the town gets angry. Shame, for there was a lot going for this with the rumor mill and general village weirdness.

Image

12. Tsuchi [Earth] (1939, Tomu Uchida) - 32nd check - 6/10
--- The available print has a lot of issues. That doesn't stop Tsuchi [Earth] (1939) from becoming a enriching experience. No doubting it would have been even greater if all the footage had been present and in better shape, but there is such a growing intensity in this creation, that one gets sucked in for this story of family and soil.

Image

13. Retour à l'aube [She Returned at Dawn] (1938, Henri Decoin) - 5th check - 6/10
--- A sweet naive country girl goes to the big city for the first time to collect a little inheritance. The story is simple and plays out exactly as you'd expect. I mean that in a positive way, for this was captured in style. Sure, a little slow at times, but you know Danielle Darrieux will get into trouble sooner or later experiencing the night life, and it's a slow tease until it escalates for a satisfying trauma for the poor little thing.

Image

14. Le récif de corail [Coral Reefs] (1939, Maurice Gleize) - 4th check - 5/10
--- It's Jean Gabin & Michèle Morgan reunited after the super success of Le quai des brumes [Port of Shadows] (1938). Can't say Le récif de corail [Coral Reefs] (1939) was nearly as good, but you still had two damaged souls finding each other while running away from troubles. A little more chill this time around, and not as haunting, but it's still a Gabin picture and that's worth a good deal.

Image

15. Come Closer, Folks (1936, D. Ross Lederman) - 1st check - 3/10
--- Fast talking conman comedy where James Dunn and his fellow bullshitters fit right in. However, I didn't feel the plot worked. Lives totally on the professionals delivering the material than the material itself, and unfortunately, this time, that was not enough.

Image

16. Disbarred (1939, Robert Florey) - 1st check - 4/10
--- Otto Kruger might have been 3rd billed, but he was the star of this crooked scheme. Any time he can be a nasty devil he'll outside anybody, and here he can do just that defending criminals by dishonest means, even when he's been Disbarred (1939). Throw-away production, but Kruger makes something out of it.

Image

17. Million Dollar Legs (1939, Nick Grinde & Edward Dmytryk) - 5th check - 3/10
--- Oddly, I don't think the title Million Dollar Legs (1939) was in reference to it's star Betty Grable. At least not in the movie, but I'm sure in publicity and peoples minds it was. It basically became her nickname. She didn't really get anything important to do in this college movie anyway, as the boys, and especially rich-man's-son John Hartley, took center stage with their ambitions in sports. Not exactly a good one with it's half hearted and clichéd plot, but the boys were lively.

Image

18. She Married a Cop (1939, Sidney Salkow) - 3rd check - 4/10
--- By all accounts a throw-away romance picture from Republic, but the inclusion of cartoon making and a Jean Parker on form, makes She Married a Cop (1939) a little more likable. The cop being Phil Regan, a singing cop at that. He was okay, but no screen magnet. He was better as the fat cartoon pig in the movie!

Image

19. Due milioni per un sorriso (1939, Carlo Borghesio & Mario Soldati) - 1st check - 4/10
--- The usual light Italian formula. Here a aging rich man want to relive his youth through sponsoring a film about it, trying to recreate a past love. Felt cheerful, but also not a deep experience. Just simple, pleasing and forgettable.

Image

20. Zwei Herzen im Dreiviertel-Takt [Two Hearts in Waltz Time] (1930, Géza von Bolváry) - 3rd check - 5/10
--- Almost an endless song session where Willi Forst twists us around his little finger. For a early German musical it's surprisingly durable. Not 100% my thing, but it's jolly enough not to sour.

Image

21. Ils étaient neuf célibataires [Nine Bachelors] (1939, Sacha Guitry) - 14th check - 8/10
--- Sacha Guitry at his most delightful! With a lot of help from his nine wonderful bachelors.

Image

22. Marie-Martine (1943, Albert Valentin) - 2nd check - 7/10
--- Marie-Martine (1943) is more a interesting drama than a thrilling one. The way it's told in flashbacks, you go the wrong way, backwards, to find out what happened in the life of this poor girl. Part of the brief director spell for writer Albert Valentin, showing yet another quality output. This guy had something going on, and he deserves bigger exposure.

Image

23. The Queen's Corgi (2019, Vincent Kesteloot & Ben Stassen) - 46th check - 4/10
--- Needed something for the whole family, and cute dogs wins them over. I'm a cat person, so not loving this all the way. But it possessed enough of that cuteness to fulfill it's purpose. Plus, Trump gets bit in the balls.

Image

24. The Great Victor Herbert (1939, Andrew L. Stone) - 5th check - 4/10
--- Fictional events of the life of composer Victor Herbert, where he ends up being over-shadowed by clichéd Hollywood love story between Allan Jones & Mary Martin who performers his already (by 1943) out-of-fashioned songs. Got 3 Oscar nominations, because the Oscars love these biographical releases, but it honestly didn't deserve any of them. It's a very forgettable experience, and is probable only worth it if you know who Susanna Foster is, and want to see her screen debut.

Image

25. Society Smugglers (1939, Joe May) - 1st check - 4/10
--- Undercover lovers trying to bust down a diamond smuggling gang. Routine as it gets, but fun enough. Helps that it's the girl that's always in the danger zone, while Preston Foster is sort of a dick.

Image

26. The Arkansas Traveler (1938, Alfred Santell) - 1st check - 4/10
--- To me The Arkansas Traveler (1938) felt like Bob Burns trying to cover the void left by Will Rogers. This folksy character trying his best to solve people's problems while stumping a lot. He doesn't nearly have the same charms as Rogers, but there is something gullible about it.

Image

27. Opened by Mistake (1940, George Archainbaud) - 1st check - 3/10
--- A man finds a corpse in a trunk and this was all they came up with....?

Image

28. Ma! He's Making Eyes at Me (1940, Harold D. Schuster) - 2nd click - 3/10
--- I found the whole publicity gimmick more creepy that funny. At least the girl was allowed to marry the one she loved in the end. Otherwise a pretty lame idea with one of two giggly moments.

Image

29. Bombay Clipper (1942, John Rawlins) - 1st check - 4/10
--- A minor crime flick, which was at least enjoyable in all it's predictability. William Gargan can deliver these types of roles in his sleep and there was bubbling suspense going on. Nothing too spectacular, though.

Image

30. Gert and Daisy's Weekend (1942, Maclean Rogers) - 1st check - 3/10
--- If you can stand two cackling old birds drivel on without saying much worth a laugh, you are in for.... something. A British cheapie starring Elsie Waters & Doris Waters, sisters of Jack Warner (of Dixon of Dock Green tv-series fame), tries to be utterly silly, and it is. Simply not of the funny kind.

SpoilerShow

2. The Footloose Heiress (1937, William Clemens) - 7th checks - 4/10

Yeah, it wasn't me. albajos is the one working hard to retain the title. Last year's <400 Checks Challenge was the one I burned-out on after a week. I still ended up on 11th place. We'll see if I can last more than a week this year around.

You're back! I was hoping you were going to come defend your title...
We'll see how well I'll do. The others of the crazy Norwegian gang have started hard.
And isn't it another one of those crazy norwegians who have the "title"?

Or is it the side challenge which rewards titles?
Blarg.

I remembered two things when I glanced at last year's spreadsheet - 140 won it, and PUNQ was at the top of my table. Turns out that was the bonus challenge table, and 140 was albajos' total. Oy. I need to stop talking about things from memory. :circle:

08. 3.5* - Rim of the World by McG (2019 - USA) -- 158 checks
McG isn't very shy about his inspiration here, at the same time all these influences are just that: influences. Rim of the World is a film that is primarily focused on being as fun and amusing as possible. Be damned plot, background story and consistency. This is probably not the most popular approach, but it sure is my preferred one for nonsensical films like this.

SpoilerShow
01. 3.5* - How to Become Myself [Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata] by Jun Ichikawa (2007 - Japan) -- 28 checks

06. 1.5* - The Hustle by Chris Addison (2019 - USA) -- 128 checks (I'll just turn this into the failed blockbuster challenge)

07. 1.0* - Enter the Anime by Alex Burunova (2019 - USA/Japan) -- 7 checks

28. 84C MoPic (1989) 139 checks
Very naturalistic, raw-feeling faux-documentary following an Army unit in Vietnam. Really only held back by some stilted acting and line reads in places.

Image
29. Kidô senshi Gandamu a.k.a. Mobile Suit Gundam I (1981) 71 checks
It was only natural after finishing Gundam Origin to just lead straight into the original Gundam series that started it all. Rather than watch the TV series though, I opted to watch the summary movies that the director actually preferred where he removed things he felt were unnecessary or didn't fit from the original story and added new footage in places. Despite the original's obviously dated animation, it still has a solid storyline with real stakes to it and holds up pretty well all these years later. Looking forward to the second and third movies.

Image
30. The Three Musketeers (1921) 133 checks
Fairbanks, in the kind of role he was born for, offers up a light, entertaining adaptation of the Dumas novel. It was actually neat to see the original version that The Three Must-Go-Theres (1923) pretty much directly parodied. I kinda want to go back and watch it again to see what references I missed the first time.

Image
31. The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) 389 checks
While Leslie Howard seems well suited to the Pimpernel role, I feel like the movie spends too much time with his foppish alter-ego and not enough on the dashing vigilante. Probably the most interesting thing about it is the Clark Kent/Lois Lane-like relationship dynamic with his wife.

Image
32. Cisco Pike (1972) 144 checks
Kris Kristofferson is a drug dealer attempting to give up the game at the insistence of his lady Karen Black. But Gene Hackman, a sketchy cop, pulls him back in, forcing him make one last big push in just a week. This is actually a pretty solid movie with Kristofferson especially pulling off the lead role pretty effortlessly.

Week 1(ish) Stats and Challenge Update

Users
Through the 1st week of August, we've had 33 participants in the <400 Challenge (hell yeah!), and we'd love to have even more! The "crazy Norwegian gang" is well-represented in the top five; albajos leads the way with 52(?!?), with 72allinncallme (34), flavo5000 (32), jdidaco (30), and PUNQ (30) rounding out the top five. No one else is over 20 watches this month. The average participant has 11.09 points, and would rank 10th.

Leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Side Challenge: Ultra Obscurity
Through the 1st week of August, we have some clear models of obscurity chasing. PUNQ is our most obscure film watcher, followed by albajos, jdidaco, ororama, and frbrown.

Side challenge leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Short Talk About Shorts
I track challenge data in a weird way, but it works for me. Each film/episode watched gets a row in my spreadsheet; so I track the title, year, and who watched it (and ICM checks, like for this challenge). But shorts weird things up - each short gets a row, but doesn't count for a full point. So one metric I find interesting is the number of rows vs. the number of points. The Mystery/etc. challenge last month had 1537 points and 1558 rows; a different of only 21 (1.37% more rows than points). This challenge, which is a lot more friendly to shorts, has 366 points and 406 rows; a difference of 40 (10.93% more rows than points).

I'll report this out each week - any questions/additional stats requests, let me know.

Years
Films watched so far have ranged from 1915 to 2019, covering 92 unique years in film. 2016 is the most-watched year with 20 watches, followed by 2017 with 15 watches and 2018/1939 with 14 watches each. Our most recent year with zero watches is 1999, followed by 1958. Here's a list of watch count by decade:

Decades List
Decade Count
1910 1
1920 12
1930 36
1940 22
1950 17
1960 52
1970 42
1980 32
1990 30
2000 39
2010 122

Spoiler Tag of the Week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winner is hurluberlu for "<3 <4<><>" for encapsulating exactly what I think would happen if an emoticon and an HTML pun had a baby that had a stroke. Congrats! :whistling:

07. Dying at Grace, by Allan King (2003) 7,5/10 148 Checks

An interesting and tough documentary, where we follow a few people in their final stage of cancer...Enlightening, emotiolly moving, and thought-provoking.

08. Nightmares, by Joseph Sargent (1983) 5/10 125 Checks

I'm probably too indulgent to this movie, as most stories are rather corny... But I enjoyed the eghties time capsule effect, as well as the final story, which is poorly executed, while good at the same time.

Total : 1043 checks for 8 films...

A zany comedy that is unpredictable in the best possible way. Neither protagonist is very pleasant, but they both noticeably have beating human hearts. Crispin Glover's sadness over his dead cat comes across most strikingly in a wacky dream sequence with water skiing and giant platform shoes (see above) that eventually morphs into a nightmare. Howard Hesseman's feelings of frustration and failure due to a recent divorce are also poignant.
