This follow-up to Those Magnificent Men has much of the same cast and crew but new characters and a new race (this time by car). While easy to watch alone and apart from the original, this is not particularly great stuff. The film improves on its predecessor by getting to the race quicker and giving the hilarious Terry-Thomas a bigger role. Very few other characters are very interesting or appealing though and the sped-up footage is grating.

It is obvious that the teen marriage here will be a bumpy learning curve, but the film is boosted by a subplot involving the husband's best friend who becomes closer to him as his marriage crumbles. A closeted homosexual, the film casts ambiguity over whether the husband is aware that his friend is gay, willfully ignorant or naive. The husband is more sympathetic than the wife, but he has so much going on that it is hard to resent the imbalance.

It took me years to hunt down renaldo and clara back in college when i was really getting into dylan. the last days before everything was on kg, youtube, etc. traded a guy a copy of an uncirculating elliott smith show for a copy of r & c. what a bummer to watch that sprawling mess. dylan at his peak, greatest tour in music, and it was incomprehensible and so dull outside the performances.

My first Abbott and Costello film, this was their first big one and it met (but did not exceed) my expectations. The wordplay banter was great, but Costello was so much funnier and livelier than Abbott. The film also has dull love triangle involving three bland supporting characters and the plot comes to a standstill for most of the musical numbers. 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B' rocks though, and the film amused me while it lasted.

The plot is a little shaky here, but this is a frequently funny film with Costello once again in fine form. His verbal blunders as a waiter are hilarious and his later scared stuff is great with everybody else thinking he is imagining things. The morphing rooms set design is excellent too, the camerawork is quite atmospheric and Costello has a lovely ditzy dance routine. The film also features more engaging supporting characters than Buck Privates.

I liked Ken Burn's The Vietnam War, it's probably the best left-liberal critique of the war. I voted all episodes in the range of 6-8/10. However there are some things I didn't like: There's no analysis of which banks and enterprises profited from the war and how the presidents and staff were connected with which Wall Street firms and how these networks influenced policy. It can be surmised somewhat when we are told that key persons knew the War made no sense yet started it and carried it on. it also portrays Eisenhower and Kennedy as person who acted according to their ideology when their opportunism seems evident to me.
Also it partly glorifies US soldiers and needlessly ridicules the more radical part of the anti-war movement. It doesn't condemn the military-industrial complex per se, only its most vile outgrowths. It mostly neglects the welfare-walfare component of the US system, only a brief segment deals superficially with Johnson supporting King and the civil rights movement. I would also have welcomed it if the doc explored how Western state-capitalist colonialism drove "underdeveloped" countries toward communism.
As I didn't know anything about the Vietnam War before, I found it formidably informative and watching it was extremely rewarding for me. Notwithstanding the cautions of the last paragraph, I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the war.

I'm with you on a fair amount of that - your first paragraph sounds like stuff I'd like to know more about, but I think that would have to be a separate doc/miniseries. Good stuff there, I just think it was beyond the scope of the series.

I didn't get a lot of glorification of US soldiers. I liked having some of the personal stories of people in the war sprinkled in, as it helped bring an emotional connection to the series, rather than a rote reflection of facts. I actually thought the series was quite fair towards soldiers, telling some "heroic" stories as well as some terrible stories of atrocities, and largely portraying the masses as faceless cogs in a machine being poorly run by people in power. And I didn't mind the critique of the anti-war movement. Some of the other stuff you mention would also be cool to see a doc on.

I liked the series overall, and found it to be the most informative one I've seen about the progression of the war and how the battles and years fit into US culture in the 60s and 70s. So many more intricate piece can (and should) be examined, but this is a great start.

Yes, there certainly were dubious people hopping on the anti-war band-waggon in the later years when it became popular.It’s just that the doc doesn’t really say what was wrong with part of the anti-war movement. Just that they said kinda nasty things
and weren‘t liked by the middle class.

This was an interesting one. A mayor of a town fakes his death to avoid confrontation with Spanish invaders that are planning to move through the town. With the mayor in hiding, the women of the town band together to bone down on the soldiers to keep them placated enough not to kill everyone. It's uh... a pretty progressive story to say the least with a fairly light tone for much of the runtime. Good movie.

This one was a rewatch, having first seen it on Sci-fi channel's Saturday Anime block back in the late 90's. What's funny is the youtube rip I watched of this was actually pulled from a VHS copy of the actual Saturday Anime airing of it. So I watched the EXACT same version I saw over twenty years ago with commercials and everything. While it starts off in a very cliched way, I thought it actually held up pretty decently with a twist at the end that I still remember even though it's pretty much straight out of about a half dozen Twilight zone episodes.

Man... The only reason I watched this is that it was a DVD I've had sitting in my watch stack forever. Decided to final put it in to see if it was any good. And honestly? Meh... Definitely bloated with a close to 4 hour runtime through the four episodes, it's the story of an Irish woman and her various travails in life and love. The acting is actually quite good with the movie seeming to be most notable for having an early Colin Farrell performance. I feel like my mom would enjoy this.

I can definitely see why Criterion included this as an extra on the blu-ray of 8 1/2. It's certainly a very self-indulgent Fellini but suggested if you like things like 8 1/2 or Roma.


68. The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) 126 checks
This is like the movie equivalent of a molotov cocktail. It's fiery, unapologetic, has a VERY strong point-of-view but definitely comes across as intentionally polarizing to the detriment of more robust characterization. The story involves a black man who is recruited into the FBI as a token so a senator can gain more black votes. Unfortunately for them, he uses the skills he gains in his stint in the FBI to incite a revolution. All white people are evil and horribly racist. Nearly all black people who have dissenting opinions are killed. The movie pulls no punches on what its views are.

I don't know about you, but Nintendo Quest made me wanna go out and find rare Nintendo games.

I mean, I don't want to spend the money on rare ones, but I definitely want to go out and get more of the commons. Like stop by pawn shops and pick some up (and hope I get lucky).
