In the Mood for LoveShow
1. Yesterday (2019)
2. The Ugly Truth (2009)

3. This Means War (2012)

Image

It is nearly impossible to root for either male lead here as they constantly invade the privacy of the woman who they are competing for by misusing CIA resources. Tom Hardy does at least come off as earnest with his interest in her - which is more than one can say about Chris Pine, who pretty much blackmails her into a first date in the first place. Hardy and Pine certainly bounce off each other quite well though - and there is a rad paintball scene.

4. Who You Think I Am (2019)

Image

Aided by a fake Facebook profile, a middle aged lecturer begins an online romance with a photographer half her age in this French drama that questions whether their romance can be real if he fell in love with a difference face. The final 45 minutes are weaker than the first hour, with an overly fanciful stretch and too many twists and turns that detract from the central romance. The filmmakers certainly find a perfect note to end things on though.

3. A Guy Named Joe (Victor Fleming, 1943) 6.5/10 ... I'm not quite sure what motivated the early 1940s fascination with movies about people in the afterlife semi-interacting with people who were still alive (Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Heaven Can Wait). Pure speculation, but maybe something to do with the war? In my view, by far the best of this niche trend was A Matter of Life and Death.

1. Yesterday (2019)
2. The Ugly Truth (2009)
3. This Means War (2012)
4. Who You Think I Am (2019)

5. Melody / S.W.A.L.K (1971)

Image

With some lovely songs by the Bee Gees a nice turn by newcomer Tracy Hyde, this comedy is certainly pleasant enough to sit through, but the whole thing feels rather aimless until the romantic leads begin to bond - and that is more than halfway in. Some have described the film as 'cute', but this would more aptly apply were the characters half their age and more naïve to the ways of the world. The ending is admittedly quite charming though.

6. Underground (1928)

Image

This was one of the first movies that the legendary Anthony Asquith directed, and from low camera angles that reveal actual ceilings (over a decade before Citizen Kane), to silhouette shots, to an amazing bit in which an actor directly punches into the camera (see above), the film looks great. The story though is a bit tepid. It begins okay, but the plot quickly descends into high stakes melodrama. Seeing a 1920s London Underground is cool though.

1. Bell Book and Candle (Richard Quine, 1958) - 7/10
Kim Novak is so incredibly beautiful in this one.
2. Murder Mystery (Kyle Newacheck, 2019) - 5/10
Fun enough for a mystery comedy, but ultimately average and forgettable.

Boo. First Die Hard, now this... :circle: :cowbow:

Seriously though, I get it. The mood and central relationship in that film were just spot on for me - it's like I'd felt every single bit of that before. But if you don't connect with it like that, I totally see your reaction.

01. The Captive, by Cecil B. DeMille (1915) 7,5/10

Some very interesting and strong moments.

02. Secretary, by Rufus Shainberg (2002) 7,5/10

A very unusual romantic comedy, with an healthy approach to SM gaming.

Imdb's own definition

Should contain numerous inter-related scenes of a character and their personal life with emphasis on emotional attachment or involvement with other characters, especially those characterized by a high level of purity and devotion.

(if this does not describe the movie wholly, but only certain scenes or a subplot, then it should be submitted as a keyword instead)

So Stranger Than Fiction which I saw today isn't really and I wont count it. But I use the same definition for some of the shorts and obscure movies that are missing the neccessary updates so I'll guess I'll get even.

I haven't seen Another Year, so can't answer for that one
