1. China Moon (1994) 5.5/10 Romance/noir - Not the most stunning in terms of acting or story, but it’s passable.
2. Maldeamores (2007) Drama, Romance, Comedy 5.5/10 Most of the situations portrayed were the absurdities of love or the annoyances that prevent love from occurring.
3. I've Always Loved You (1946) 3.5/10 Among Borzage’s worst.
4. Change of Heart (1934) 6/10 Starts off very blah, but then Janet Gaynor elevates it to another level toward the end.

9. The Midnight Hour (1985)

Image

The first half of this horror-comedy is very low stakes without much sense of urgency or impending danger regarding a zombie plague. Things pick up well in the second half though as a sweet romance blossoms between an undead cheerleader and the loner protagonist who is unaware of her condition. The film also features a chic send-up of Michael Jackson's Thriller video set to a similarly catchy song (see above) and the makeup effects are solid.

I love my wifeShow
1. Meet the Patels (2014)
2. Explorers (1985)
3. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960, Karel Reisz)
4. Bedtime Stories (2008)
5. About a Boy (2002)
6. Always Be My Maybe (2019)
I really wanted to like it more - but it just came across as "fair." It's a romantic comedy, and doesn't hide that - Wife was flipping me shit for laughing at all the rom-com cliches they hit. Honestly, it was a mediocre romance and a really good comedy that just didn't quite mesh. When they went for funny, it was really funny. But the rest of the plotting and story and dialogue was all meh. Keanu Reeves was pretty awesome, though.

3. He's Just Not That Into You (Ken Kwapis, 2009) - 5.5/10
Liked the chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Scarlett Johansson, the rest was pretty meh. Ginnifer Goodwin's character must be the dumbest character I've seen in a movie.

4. The Fortune (Mike Nichols, 1975) - 4/10
Mike Nichols is one of my favourite directors, but even he (and the star power of the cast) can't save this mess of a script. :(

If faithful to its source novel, this film spins a coincidence heavy story that does not quite have enough charm to make up for it. A big problem is the wordy first half - so jam-packed with title cards that the experience is more like reading a picture book. The title cards ease off a bit towards the end, but even then, the filmmaking approach is hardly innovative, a few choice high camera angles aside. There are a few thrills towards the middle though.

1. Tales of the City Episode #1.3 (1993)
2. Tales of the City Episode #1.4 (1993)
3. Tales of the City Episode #1.5 (1993)
4. Tales of the City Episode #1.6 (1993)

Seen the first two (or three) episodes in cinema. Lovely mini-series, I wonder why so few here have seen it. 6.6/10

5. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947). Good movie about a dreamer-type ADHD writer. 8.1/10

6.The Terminal (2005). Seen today for the knockout compo. Very promising in the beginning but doesn't know where it wants to go. It is very meek and timid. It had a strong scene where the inhumanity of laws concerning importation of medication is displayed, as well as the extent to which patients like me must go, in order not be considered criminals simply for taking vital medicine. Some minutes later however, we learn that it's not the bureaucratic laws which are at fault but the public officials who don't apply common sense in hardship cases and never turn a blind eye in such cases. Contrary to populist notions, using common sense in bureaucratic matters would inevitably open the floodgates to despotism. The solution to unjust laws is to simply abolish them. The movie involves also a romance,

but because of Hollywood race hygiene norms, the lovebirds unfortunately have to split before the movie ends
. Although some scenes are entertaining, it's mostly a missed opportunity as the setting has great potential. 5.5/10

7. Party Girl (1958). Good movie 7.3/10
8. The Gangster (1947). Some great cinematography and some great lighting during/after a rain scene. But dialogues are corny and the plot was contrived by an imbecile. 5.5/10
9. Scandal Sheet (1952) Another great noir movie I've seen this month. 7.4/10

This follow-up to Those Magnificent Men has much of the same cast and crew but new characters and a new race (this time by car). While easy to watch alone and apart from the original, this is not particularly great stuff. The film improves on its predecessor by getting to the race quicker and giving the hilarious Terry-Thomas a bigger role. Very few other characters are very interesting or appealing though and the sped-up footage is grating.
