The 2010s Challenge
2019-2020 edition
Image

Prepare for next update of our 2010s poll in in 2020. To keep this from being just a boring accumulation of titles, it would be great if you could include a rating and/or some comments on each film and update frequently.

Goal:
Watch as many films from the 2010s as you can (or want to).

Rules:
- A feature film (anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry
- Concerning mini-series, each episodes counts as one entry. (Tv series aren't allowed)
- Rewatches are allowed and good for the soul
- Challenge runs from July 1st 2019 till June 30st 2020

Lists:
iCM Forum's Top 250 Favourite Movies of the Current Decade So Far
iCM Forum's Favourite Movies of the Current Decade So Far Complete List
IMDb Top 50 Movies of the 2010s
The AV Club's 100 best films of the Decade So Far
The Film Stage’s Top 50 Films of the Decade (So Far)
The Dissolve's The 50 best films of the decade so far
The Playlist 50 best films of the decade so far
Peter Bradshaw’s top 50 films of the demidecade
BBC's 100 greatest films of the 21st Century
TSPD's The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films
Cahiers du cinema - Yearly top 10s
(Of course only the 2010s movies of the last three are of interest for this challenge)

This thread is auto-updated! When I turn on the program to run the auto-update

Please read the following:
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
What this means is you must post in the following formats:

1. Film 1
1-2. Film 1, Film 2
1.-2. Film 1, Film 2

Only these formats are recognized. The number of the film must be the at the beginning of the line and there must be a space after the period. You can use styling on the number if you wish to do so.

If you need to post a numbered list then type !seen N anywhere in the post where N is the number of films you've seen, e.g. !seen 10. This will ignore the numbered list and use that value instead.

If you make a mistake in your post, you can try editing it real fast, but if the program reads your post before you can edit it then you can make another post with just the !seen N command or post the last seen film normally, e.g. 42. Film title.

1. Toy Story 4 (2019): 8.0
2. The Biggest Little Farm (2019): 7.0
3. Private Life (2018): 7.0
4. Rocketman (2019): 6.5
5. 170 Hz (2011): 7.5 - This movie about two deaf teens running away together is pretty standard in plot, but debuting director Joost van Ginkel succeeds very well in conveying their state of mind with some strong directing. Unfortunate the male lead, Michael Muller, isn't as strong as the female, Gaite Jansen.
6. Quality Time (2017): 7.5 - This movie consist of five small stories of 30something old men struggling with life. Sounds familiar. But for originality in execution this gets a 10. It's very absurd. It doesn't emotionally come together as good as hoped in the end, but I did laugh my ass off at times.
7. Joy (2010): 5.8 - This movie about a young damaged female looking for her real mother feels as a poor copy of a Dardenne movie.
8. Le meraviglie [The Wonders] (2014): 7.0

Thanks, LW. One of the few non-official challenges I still take a stab at (a reasonable number of current films being [urg] Good for me).

1. Wind River (17)
I loved this -- unusual, gripping and felt authentic.

2. Patriots Day (16)
I had personal reasons for wanting to see this, but ended up muting it because of the earsplitting score (which drowned out the dialog). It held my interest in its chaotic way.

Don't really participate in challenges, but I'd be at 34 without making a real a effort.

1. The Brand New Testament
2. The Trust
3. Black Mirror: White Bear
4. Vengeance: A Love Story
5. Suburra
6. Between Worlds
7. Black Mirror: Crocodile
8. Black Mirror: Men Against Fire
9. Black Mirror: Smithereens
10. Good Time
11. Arsenal
12. Legend
13. First Reformed
14. Gutland

I loved the latter three Black Mirror episodes (not White Bear). Between Worlds had its charms. And I added Suburra to my 500<400 list. On the other hand, Vengeance: A Love Story was just awful.

01. Kaguyahime no monogatari, by Isao Takahata (2013) 10/10 - Rewatch

This one is slowly becoming a classic and a favorite in my book... Didn't expect to get moved so much on a nth rewatch.

Guess I'd better get back on this. Mostly been watching newer films lately so since start of July:

1. In Fabric (Strickland, 2018)*
2. Minding the Gap (Bing Liu, 2018)
3. Lost in London (Harrelson, 2017)
4. Aquaman (Wan, 2018)
5. Las herederas/The Heiresses (Martinessi, 2018)
6. The Girl in the Spider's Web (Alvarez, 2018)
7. Les salauds (Denis, 2013)
8. Midsommar (Aster, 2019)*
9. Un couteau dans le coeur/Knife + Heart (Gonzalez, 2018)
10. Wildlife (Dano, 2018)
11-14. Escape at Dannemora Ep 1-8 (Stiller, 2018)
15. Euphoria (Langseth, 2017)
16. Incident in a Ghostland (Laugier, 2018)
17. At Eternity's Gate (Schnabel, 2018)
18. Damsel (Zellners, 2018)
19. Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (Loveridge, 2018)
20. The Little Stranger (Abrahamson, 2018)
21. Le redoubtable (Hazanavicius, 2017)
22. Vox Lux (Corbet, 2018)
23. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (Berlinger, 2019)

The two I saw at cinema (In Fabric and Midsommar) have certain similarities in their esoteric style, 70s influences and sometimes uneasy balance between horror & comedy. I liked both, but neither quite hit the spot enough for me to call a favourite. Midsommar had the same thing I felt with Hereditary - he's clearly a very talented director & can get under the skin but both films when they could have gone properly disturbing, they instead start self-parodying and it loses it a bit for me. In Fabric has a lot of enjoyable elements that don't always mesh, it's kind of like if Terry Gilliam made a giallo. The main problem was the structure it didn't feel like it really needed to be an anthology, the segments were unbalanced and it just came across as repeating itself in less effective ways.

Minding the Gap was really good, somewhat in the Hoop Dreams style.

Escape at Dannemora almost felt like it was season 4 of Fargo - not quite the right geographic location but certainly for the plot/characters.

02. Toy Story 4, by Josh Cooley (2019) 10/10

I loved it from top to bottom. I'm impressed by the script quality, as the movie keeps bypassing obvious solutions...

03. Yves, by Benoit Forgeard (2019) 6/10

A looser accepts to test a smart fridge... The result is quite interesting, even though the cast isn't really on board.

04. Di jiu tian chang / So long my son, by Wang Xiaoshuai (2019) 9/10

A beautiful melodrama, set in the recent history of the Republic of China. Heartbreaking...

05. Yesterday, by Danny Boyle (2019) 7/10

Entertaining, but really a minor Boyle...

06. Brightburn, by David Yarovesky (2019) 7/10

This negative Superman isn't surprising at all, except in its gory effects...

07. The Mustang / Nevada, by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (2019) 6/10

Solid acting, nice story...

08. Brawl in Cell Block 99, by S. Craig Zahler (2017) 7,5/10

Quite entertaining, even if uselessly violent at times, which undermines other scenes...

09. Annabelle comes home, by Gary Dauberman (2019) 7/10

This act sort of uses all of the left for later plot elements from the Conjuring franchise, but it was fun.

10. Kaijû no kodomo / Children of the Sea, by Ayumu Watanabe (2019) 4/10

A few beautiful shots, but a confused story, lost in a philosophical mumbo jumbo which didn't make any sense to me...

11. D'Ardennen, by Robin Pront (2015) 7/10

12. The Lion King, by Jon Favreau (2019) 7,5/10

I enjoyed the VFX and photorealistic approach, which makes this a strange kind of movie...

13. Cities of last things, de Ho Wi Ding (2018) 7/10 - Rewatch

Second viewing isn't as enthusiastic as the first one...

I'm in, this will be my main focus on August as I'd like to improve my rank on the All-time Box Office list. Starting at 252/785 (#35651), I need 20 to get in the top 30000. It should be a good start.

1. Dunkirk (2017) 6/10
I liked the different stories blending together, and it's always interesting to see a war film not focusing on the battlefield.

2. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) 5/10
Beautiful to look at, even though I felt the yellow got overused. My main complaint is how long it is, it could easily have been 25-30 minutes shorter.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
