Yeah, me neither.

This notorious Video Nasty seems pretty tame some forty years on. It is over 30 minutes in before we see any murderous drill action, and while some of the more drawn out slayings (a drunk trying to spark a conversation with him on the street) carry some morbid black humour, most of the kills are too brief. The film almost clicks as a character study though, Joe Delia's disquieting music is great and the ambiguous ending works very well.

This thriller has been compared to the Saw franchise as the competitors have to select between equally undesirable choices, but this is less sadistic stuff. The emphasis is always on the psychology of the characters (not violence or gore) with some curious developments as they go from trying to help each other to realising that the only way to survive is to eliminate each other. There is also a fun bit in which the characters go all Deer Hunter.

8. Handmaid’s Tale - Season 3 - Episode 4 (2019) 6/10 Thriller
9. Handmaid’s Tale - Season 3 - Episode 5 (2019) 6/10 Thriller
10. Handmaid’s Tale - Season 3 - Episode 6 (2019) 6/10 Thriller- So far, there are some “moments” that make this series worth watching at all: the acting and cinematography and all the female directors on the episodes. However, it’s incredibly slow.
11. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019) Thriller - 7/10 Joe Berlinger proves he can direct narrative features as well. I went into this never being that hot on Zac Efron and expecting to turn it off. While a bit dramatized (compared to the recent four hour long doc on Bundy), it was still a pleasant watch.
12. The Handmaid's Tale - Season 3 - (2019) Episode 7: Under His Eye (2019) 6/10 Thriller

19. The Act: Season One - Episode 8 - (2019) 7/10 Thriller
20. Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) Thriller 5/10 A lot of rehashed stuff with Eddie Murphy relying on his reputation as a star. The plot was so convoluted and the technology was so outdated that it was laughable.
21. The Drowning Pool (1975) Mystery 2/10 Male gaze mania.
22. The Handmaid's Tale - Season 3 - (2019) Episode 8 7/10 Thriller
23. D.O.A. (1988) 7/10 Thriller, Mystery
24. The Getaway (1972) Thriller
25. Romeo Is Bleeding (1993) Thriller 6/10 Some derivative plot points with great actors and a writer who decided everything should be as batshit crazy as possible.
26. Killing Eve (2018– ) S1, E1: Nice Face 7/10 Thriller - Some good acting, weird choices for music but still good (just because I like to listen to retro French music doesn’t mean it necessarily fits)
27. Killing Eve (2018– ) S1, E2: I’ll Deal with Him Later 7/10 Thriller

One could easily poke holes in this film's credibility or blast it for being so over-the-top, but referencing his own Independence Day at a couple of points, Roland Emmerich makes this a delightfully tongue-in-cheek affair while also providing a touching strained father/daughter relationship tale. As the girl in question, Joey King has moxie too and is not just some helpless plot device; same goes for all the characters actually, with the tour guide even getting in on the action. I was reluctant to see this since Olympus Has Fallen didn't wow me at the time, but this is in a real league above it.

Paradise here refers (ironically) to Malaysia as the plot circles around two men who have to contend with returning there to save a mutual friend from the death penalty for drugs. Catch is that they have to serve three years jail time themselves in a complex plea bargain. The dilemma itself is not uninteresting, but over an hour of the characters debating what to do before returning is a bit much. The final stretch though is no more palatable with the film becoming incredibly disrespectful towards Malaysian laws and society; the country is pretty much demonised by the end of the movie. It's icky.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

WS
Just a ridiculous number of doors.
Monsters Inc? It'd fit the clues except I don't know how WS fits in this one either.
:poshclap:

WS... W is the 23rd letter of the alphabet, S is the 19th. This is my favorite bit of IMDB trivia for the film. So WS = 2319 = White Sock, which is what's on the back of the monster when they call a code on him.

20. Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Plays converted to films rarely work out great for me, and this was not an exception. A really good film, with some great acting in it and a solid mystery, but ultimately it fell just short of feeling special. Just didn't quite move me the way I'd hoped.
SpoilerShow
Of course one minor annoyance was the ending - I was unaware of the ending going into the film, but it's common enough now that it's verging on a trope. I've seen that same basic ending in an episode of CSI, among other places. A cool twist, but one I've seen in later films/TV.

16. Between Worlds (2018)
Great Cage, not a good movie

17. Good Time (2017)
This post-heist movie has gotten a lot of praise. The best aspects of the movie are its near-hallucinogenic willingness to just ... go ... further, crazier, deeper into a night of hapless criminal nuttiness. And it turns out (who knew?) that Robert Pattinson plays a very convincing low-level crook idiot from Queens, though I think the best acting comes from the man who plays Pattinson's impromptu accomplice, Buddy Duress. He might actually be a crook idiot from Queens. I can't find much info about him, but he's very convincing. Still, I think there's less here than meets the eye. This is a decent crime potboiler/nightmare and little more.

18. Arsenal (2017)
Good Cage, not a good movie

Huh, I wouldn't have gotten that. Or at least not on first go. I probably would have gone with Scream, maybe Scream 4, since I also watch those films on a yearly basis and they seem to be less widely appreciated than the Ocean's films...
