I might be mistaken, but I think you have said before that this was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Probably confusing you with someone else though...

The Bad Seed was good but could have been so much better if not for the ending.
It would have been better if they had stuck to the original ending, but alas: the Hays Code.
Yeah, I read up on it. Naturally, I would have preferred the ending of the novel.

19. True Romance (1993) - 7/10
20. Charley Varrick (1973) - 7/10
21. El mariachi (1992) - 4/10
22. Planet Terror (2007) - 3/10

Yeah no, Rodriguez’ films are just not for me. True Romance surprised me with its well-fitting mix of action and romance, comedy and heart; and Charley Varrick was a charming one.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Nifty comedy about a man showing up for a Halloween "murder party", unaware that is hosted by a group of art students who wish to creatively kill a person in the name of art. The middle section is pretty weak with limited tension and urgency as the art students take a break to get high on truth serum, but everything eventually amounts to an energetic final stretch in which the protagonist has to run through pretentious art exhibits and signs that say "Art?" in a nice bit of audience-winking as Jeremy Saulnier invites us to question whether his very film is art or something else entirely.

Rewatch for the hell of it, mostly because I don't have a rating for it. And I have to say I liked it - a good not great action film. This is Jackie Chan not at his best, as I've learned watching more of his films. But still fun.

Not included... Brawl in Cell Block 99, by S. Craig Zahler (2017) 7,5/10

I always have trouble with imdb labels, as this is definitely a thriller by my judgment, much more than the following :

05. Plan 9 from outer Space, by Ed Wood Jr (1959) 2/10

The silly plot, bad acting and editing, poor use of the set, all of this would be excused if not for these long sequences of silly, endless, dialogues. The film is 30 minutes too long by any standard.
Watched (04)Show
01. Klute, by Alan J. Pakula (1971) 7,5/10 - Rewatch
02. The Man Who Laughs, by Paul Leni (1928) 7,5/10
03. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning , by Danny Steinmann (1985) 2/10
04. Pitall, by Andre de Toth (1948) 7,5/10

Set in a universe in which the tooth fairy is an evil avenging spirit, Darkness Falls comes with an intrigue premise. The overly complex mythology leaves open several unanswered questions though. There is also a lot of promise in the notion that she can only operate in the dark, and thus the characters are only safe when in the light, but all this ultimately amounts to is a whole lot of frantic, poorly shot and rapidly edited scare sequences in which it is hard to make out what is happening. Add in a whole lot of false boo-moments with over-the-top music cues and this is a real mess.

Indeed. You should count it. Suspense isn’t an IMDb category either so this challenge is more than an «IMDb-tags Challenge». Ofc up to host, but I’m pretty sure he agrees.

I will leave the decision to our host, but I agree this label thing is tricky. Many thrillers are labelled as "crime" rather than thrillers. Mystery is better defined, it seems. Or maybe I was just lucky when I browsed my available titles...

The abandoned mine location here is appropriately spooky and the possession scenes are creepy, or at least when the camera stops shaking (the action scenes are filmed with some of the most irksome jerky camerawork imaginable). There is some decent severed head gore effects too. The story is not exactly new or original with some particular lame Ouija board clichés though, and all of the exposition here is pretty cut and dry.

Two movies I enjoyed, but I noticed that both had this tendency to go really big with their score and let the music overwhelm the dialogue. In The Hangover, I think they were going for some sort of mtv vibe aimed at audiences with a median age of 16. In Suburra, I think it was more of a Nolan-esque tendency to keep a propulsive soundtrack that would heighten the intensity of the story.

14. The Hangover (2009)
I hadn't seen this since its release. This movie came at the end of a four- or five-year period when my friends and I would sneak 40s into movie theaters to see dumb comedies. We called it the MaFC (movies and forties club). Good times. Anyway, I think The Hangover held up quite well ten years later.

15. Suburra (2015)
I really liked this one. I'm surprised it's not more popular. I don't write that because I think it's a small movie that should get wider notice. I mean that I actually thought it was popular. Netflix did an entire prequel tv series, but I see the movie only has 365 checks. Now it's on my 500<400 list. Suburra suffers from very shallow characterization, but it has a tremendously enjoyable, labyrinthine plot.

23. Orphan (2009) - 5/10
24. Basic Instinct (1992) - 7/10
25. Wait Until Dark (1967) - 7/10
26. Cape Fear (1962) - 7/10

Not sure how to feel about Orphan (especially towards the end), but found it not intriguing enough to keep me interested for the two hours. Basic Instinct continues the oddity that every Paul Verhoeven movie I’ve seen so far was rated 7/10 by me (coincidentally it’s also the 7th movie by him I’ve seen). I guess I liked Wait Until Dark, but the premise had so much more to offer. Robert Mitchum made me uncomfortable in Cape Fear, thus it was a good movie.

11. The Seduction (David Schmoeller, 1982) - 5/10
Interesting, but flawed movie about a news reporter being stalked by an unhinged man. The director manages to create a cool atmosphere and there are lots of great, moody shots throughout the movie, but the script is weak and the acting is at often times wooden, especially from Morgan Fairchild, the lead actress (she was also nominated for a Razzie for her performance). Andrew Stevens gives an intense performance as the stalker, I was reminded of Ramsay Bolton every time he was on screen.

Not included... Brawl in Cell Block 99, by S. Craig Zahler (2017) 7,5/10

I always have trouble with imdb labels, as this is definitely a thriller by my judgment
Go ahead and include it - I've added it to my spreadsheet, so please just number your films accordingly. (PS: This is tagged as a Thriller on TMDB)

More generally, IMDB/ICM/TMDB tags are the ones I'd consider just auto-eligible. Other films can certainly be included as long as you're prepared to back up your reasoning. I generally defer to people who have seen the film.

According to my mother, this film features the greatest acting performance by any actress.
And it would even be eligible for this challenge.

Good guess, but nope. I did hear about that movie a ton growing up, though I've only recently seen it.

This directional debut from Jeff Nichols looks at animosity that reaches boiling point between two trios of brothers from the same father. There is quite a lot to the film thematically and Michael Shannon is solid as the indignant oldest brother from the first family. The rest of the siblings on both sides are interchangeable though and we never get that deep under their skin. The low key inconclusive ending rubbed me the wrong way too.
