1. Het paard van Sinterklaas / Winky’s Horse (2005, Netherlands) 5/10 It is a sub-standard story about a girl who wants a horse for Christmas. There is a boy painted in the Zwarte Piet fashion. We’ve discussed the Dutch tradition on the forum before, so that’s how I was even familiar with it. However, it’s in pretty poor taste. It flew in 2005. It’s something that is not acceptable in America. Otherwise, the main discussion centered on children and their belief in Santa, St. Nick, and how children from different countries believed different things.
2. Brimstone (2016, Netherlands) Dutch Top 50. - I hated it, but it was set in America, so perhaps not the ultimate Dutch experience.

Let's each pay for our own high-class wafflesShow
1. Le Fidele AKA Racer and the Jailbird (2017, Belgium)
2. Insyriated (2017, Belgium)
3. The Resistance Banker (2018, Netherlands)
4. Vet Hard AKA Too Fat Too Furious (2005, Netherlands)
This was a lot of fun - an action comedy with some heart. An overweight criminal wants to raise a ton of money for a liver transplant for his dad. Hijinks ensue. Some funny bits (probably more if you speak the language) and decent action comedy. Explosions and everything. With probably the most hilarious description of breasts I've seen.

If you haven't seen it yet I recommend watching the movie this was based on. Gamle Mænd i Nye Biler a.k.a. Old Men in New Cars (2002). It's superior in every way.

Nah, not the worst, but an ultra boring sexploitationer, with the limpest, most lifeless sex scenes ever put on film! :yucky:

On the other side, there was 'Pink Ulysses', the first I saw for this challenge, and still one of the best. You were right, I loved it.

This Dutch documentary looks at the vulnerability of privacy in the digital age. The film gets off to an interesting start, looking at equipment such as liquor store scanners to monitor the age of customers and face recognition cameras installed (but not labeled) on public transport. As the documentary progresses though, it becomes increasingly alarmist with even the suggestion that Minority Report's future crime arrests will soon be a reality (!). Much of the content also feels more relevant to Holland (and surrounding countries) with a specific focus on local laws. Still, a curious watch for sure.

4. The Son of Bigfoot (2017) Belgium | France | USA 69 checks
Another animation from the same studio I've visited before. This is more of the typical lord business enemy type movie. It could have been just a fish out of water story with dad trying to adjust to living in a house instead. But we better just watch Harry and the Hendersons for that.

Let's each pay for our own high-class wafflesShow
1. Le Fidele AKA Racer and the Jailbird (2017, Belgium)
2. Insyriated (2017, Belgium)
3. The Resistance Banker (2018, Netherlands)
4. Vet Hard AKA Too Fat Too Furious (2005, Netherlands)
5. Zwartboek AKA Black Book (2006, Netherlands)
Damn this was good. About a Dutch woman who infiltrated the Gestapo and worked as a spy for the Dutch resistance. Absolutely incredible acting and a fantastic story - just when I thought I was at the film climax, a new twist came. And although it contains one of the shittiest scenes I've ever seen, it's still an amazing watch and a decent ways up my favorites list.

The parallels to Don't Look Now are striking here with the film telling a similar tale of a skeptical husband, hopeful wife and lost child. Vinyan is never quite as atmospheric as the Roeg film, but it begins and ends very well. The garish reds and greens early on as they traverse Thailand and the wife has visions are divine (see above) while the jungle only gets stranger and more alien as the husband and wife drifter further and further apart.

05. Van God los, by Pieter Kuijpers (2003) 6/10 Netherlands

A sort of violent thriller, but the characters' motivations seemed pretty weak to me, which soured the film for me...

An interesting coming of age movie, mostly because of its stylish direction. Nicely done, mister Verhoeven...

A Dutch thriller starring Dan Stevens from The Guest. Stevens is solid in the lead role, yet we only ever see him in flashback as the entire present-day timeline of the film is shown from first person point-of-view (see above). It is an interesting filmic technique, but with constant flashbacks woven in throughout, the film never feels consistently rooted in such perspective. The special effects are very neat with large objects both drawn up to and pulled away from gaping holes in the sky, but as soon as the film starts to explain things, it gets quickly lost in all its wild sci-fi babble postulations.

This mystery thriller benefits from an intriguing Agatha Christie type premise but never quite takes off with misogynistic protagonists so vile and obnoxious that it is hard to care whether or not they are innocent. Things improve in the final third as a number of twists and turns that lead to thoughtful ruminations about friendship, trust and betrayal. The film is also very nicely shot throughout, but overall this is uneven at best.

And no, I haven't seen the original (I didn't even realise that this was an English language remake from the same director, same producers and same production company until afterwards).

There's also a Dutch remake. It's somewhere between the original Belgian one and the horrible USA remake.

FTV:3:Necrophobia (1995) (Netherlands) 5

Image

Wisely keeping to a 60 minute run-time, co-writers/co-directors Frank van Geloven & Edwin Visser go straight for short, sharp, shocks, offering eye candy for gore hounds in sticky practical special effects. Appearing to be shot on video, (giving it a nice early X-Files-style graininess) the directors surprisingly stay away from showing skin, to instead bleed Habbo Beem’s rumbling synch score and a fully charged smoke machine over the gory lashings. Intriguingly opening with Mark losing his wife Colette, the writers attempt a character study of loss and depression, which disappointingly gets chainsawed down for mild gore, not nearly as horrific as the title would suggest.

FTV:4:Amsterdamned (1988) (Netherlands) 7

Image

Whilst not their smoothest looking transfer, Shameless present a good, slightly dark picture and a very good, clean soundtrack of Dutch or Eng Dub (most of the cast did their own dubbing.)

Turning down the chance to make a Elm Street sequel (which he later said he regretted, due to missing his chance to get his foot in the door in Hollywood) to instead target his own auteur vision, writer/director/composer Dick Mass reunites with cinematographer Marc Felperlaan to dive into a Action-Crime Giallo/Slasher hybrid! Inspired by the Slasher influenced third and final wave of Gialli, Mass holds on a knife edge a balance in the murder set-pieces between the drizzled in red Slasher slayings, (complete with jump scares) with the more suggestive, foreboding tension in the long first-person tracking shots and the black scuba diving outfit-wearing psycho bubbling under the waters swimming towards the Giallo. Although featuring a surprising lack of skin, Mass, (who mentions in the making of his love for US crime films) brings the thrills in superb,off-beat Action show-stoppers. Taking full advantage of the unique location, (and backed by his own rumbling synch score) Mass connects slick tracking shots and sharp whip-pan views with a gritty edge which digs in during nail-biting boat chases down the canales, and tight car/motorbike races down the narrow, blue tint burning, streets of Amsterdam.

Setting Eric Visser’s (played by a terrific, aggressive Huub Stapel) murder investigation round the canales, the screenplay by Mass keeps the murders wickedly unpredictable, thanks to spending a little time with each possible victim, building fear of the psycho coming up for air at any moment. Holding Visser out as the lone cop not convinced the case is solved until the bitter end, Mass makes the unveiling of the killer after rough and tumble exchanges, (including a intense fight in a submerged boat) go off the boil, due to a last minute twist feeling out of place from being more in keeping with US Slashers, instead of the murky waters of Amsterdamned.

FTV:5:Meeuwen sterven in de haven (1955) (Belgium) 7.

Image

Flying a good few years before the French New Wave really got rolling, co-writer/co-directors Rik Kuypers/Ivo Michiels and Roland Verhavert swoop in with cinematographer Johan Blansjaar to ahead of it’s time fluid stylisation, spanning refined, stark Film Noir shadows looming over a harbour unveiled in a documentary level of intimacy, matched to rapid-fire tracking shots on Vreemdeling’s run to the wilderness. Despite three people sitting on the directors chair, the trio impressively present a united single vision, where in a close team-up with editor Raymonde Beaudoux, (and backed by a silky Jazz score) sawn-off jump-cuts and chic swipe-cuts line the urban skyline.

Shipping in the post-WWII pessimism to the Antwerp harbour, the screenplay by the trio holds Vreemdeling as a fading figure in the landscape ridden with wounds from the era, who only develops any level of closeness between three females, (a orphan girl, a skipper's wife and a prostitute) all of whom remain misty to him. Whilst the choice to make the characterisation vague leads to a feeling of detainment towards Vreemdeling, ( played by,a excellent, simmering Julien Schoenaerts) the writers cleverly make this a reflection of Vreemdeling embodying the Noir stranger in a strange battle-shock land, who witnesses a seagull die in the harbour.

Final double Dutch.

FTV:6: Les années 80 (1983) (Belgium) 6

Image

Filling the last 30 minutes with a showcase of Musical numbers that would not appear in a film until Golden Eighties in 1986, director Chantal Akerman composes a bridge between her early experimental style with the slickness that later played in Eighties. Doing away with any pretentious image of the musical director and film maker, Akeman brings out a melody to the multiple takes done by the cast, (with gentle direction from Akeman off-screen) with each missed & win combo leading to the sight of a joyful Akeman listening to a recording of the 80’s.

A friendly reminder that final results for this Challenge will be posted in a little under 48 hours from now (aiming for 2:30pm GMT on August 2). Please make sure that you have updated your viewings by then and/or added in countries if you have forgotten to do so since this is a requirement for your viewings to be included in the leaderboard (yes, I am looking at you again, cinephage).

It should be an interesting 48 hours with final updates to see which country wins most viewings. Belgium is ahead so far - but by less than 9 points. :shifty:

Woohoo! By far my fav Dutch film.

Yeah, I liked it, particularly the more colorful industrial/cityscape juxtapositions and textures ( "retard tom / tad tremor" (my favorite of the soundscapes too), being the standout).
