This Dutch comedy focuses on an anthropomorphised wealthy bear who mistakes a dragon egg for a beachball and decides to adopt the baby dragon when it hatches. Not everything about the plot adds up, but it is a cute enough tale, especially as the dragon starts to grow then shrink whenever the bear is not looking. The supporting characters in the tale are weird, including a constantly inebriated duck, but enough of the humour works.

Am I the only one who had a lot of trouble understanding the dialogue? I'm Flemish myself, but those kids were mumbling most of the time... I also felt like the background noises were louder than the dialogue, which didn't help either.

Finally a Dardenne film I enjoy, I found it more easier to get into and I thought the camerawork was better executed.

Hmmm, you're making me curious! I dislike the kind of films they make, maybe this might be a good option to give them another chance.

And with that, Belgium becomes the first country to achieve 100 points worth of viewings - and with a 20 point lead over the Netherlands at that. :o

I saw this to complete the Benelux trilogy, and for "conquer" the world purposes. It was not good.

See above me, Luxembourg domination is on! :circle:

@Onderhond: To be fair it's not a complete U-turn from their usual films. What I usually don't like about them is how close the camera feels to the actors, and I thought in this film the distance was reasonable. I also enjoyed the story more than the other times.

Well, I have issues finding Luxembourg movies that aren't co-productions.

Don't see the point in seeing Free Willy 2 for this challenge :p

Of course, we have this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_L ... guage_Film (but it's only 14 movies, the 15th was disqualified as it was a co-production with minor Lux involvment)

Has anyone here actually been to Luxembourg? I want to say it's a real place, but Gutland made it seem more like a phantasmagorical landscape, a place outside of time, with nice bucolic touches and occasional weirdness. If you've been there, what's it like?

I've been to Luxembourg and there is nothing to see there but bankers and business people.
Some trivia about Luxembourg. In Belgium we have a province/district called Luxembourg which is actually larger than the country Luxembourg.

Let's each pay for our own high-class wafflesShow
1. Le Fidele AKA Racer and the Jailbird (2017, Belgium)
2. Insyriated (2017, Belgium)
3. The Resistance Banker (2018, Netherlands)
A good film with a really cool story and some nice shot construction, but it fell flat for me. And I think a lot of it what the oversimplification of something I'd be very interested in - I'd rather watch this story in documentary or book form.

@Coryn: That's both expected and disappointing about Luxembourg. Though I'm glad you can confirm it exists, unlike Finland.

This Belgian animated comedy puts a X-rated spin on the legend of Tarzan. The plot is mostly just an excuse for an assortment of bizarre and wacky imagery. In the mix there is there is suggestion of bestiality, phallic shaped creatures that squirt a white stuff and the list goes (all too NSFW to post an image for). There is undeniably quite a bit of imagination to the animation and some of the self-referential dialogue is funny, but the plot is a mess.

Oh yes - I have that one lined up to watch either later tonight or some time over the weekend. Crazy animated comedies seems to be one area where Benelux countries excel.

This is not a bad movie. But I think using Trump as a plot point (as pictured above) have given this negative votes from both the pro- and anti-camps. I think it's a 7.

Not an official sequel to the classic fairytale, this Belgian animation is ripe with sexual innuendo and not all of the adult-themed gags work, but the film is made with a fair bit of unexpected intelligence, smoothly weaving in bits and pieces of other fairytales while featuring a prince who comes to acknowledge his own role in such stories as "a mere sex object". The film also benefits from a narrator who constantly breaks the fourth wall by talking to the characters - and even rewinding the footage at one point to replay events. The animation looks great compared to Picha's earlier stuff too.

Claiming to be the sole survivor of a voyage to Antarctica in 1905 in which the ship and crew vanished, an old man recounts his experiences here. Throughout his interview we see various snippets of silent film footage from actual polar expeditions (apparently footage from his trip) with the movie ending up somewhere between a mockumentary and one of Craig Baldwin's found footage narratives. As the man rambles on, his version of events becomes increasingly farfetched, and yet all the cutaways and inserts of authentic Antarctic footage manages to ground his tale and give it credibility.

That also puts me on exactly 8000 checks.

Opening with a graphic gang rape in which the victim's husband is made to watch, this Dutch thriller gets off to an emotionally charged start, yet the film soon falls into a standard police procedural drama. The film has been compared to A Clockwork Orange, but this plays out more like if Kubrick had rather followed the police as opposed to Alex and his droogs. There is a memorable underwater group murder, but the overall film feels rather bland.

Both lead actresses are solid here, especially Ann Petersen as an opera singer who finds her life suddenly changed by having to look after her mentally handicapped younger sister. There are also some solid dramatic moments as the younger sister is misunderstood, occasionally mocked by others. Very little of the comedy side of the film works though with all the jokes at her expense trivialising her condition. The film ends on a very solid note though.

It's kind of interesting to see how others look at Belgian cinema. I haven't seen P&P, it's the kind of film I tend to avoid, but someone like Ann Petersen is best known for crappy soap parts, bad comedy and children's TV. To see her being described as being a "solid lead actress" feels otherworldly :D

Sorry wanted to post these earlier, but been busy the last few weeks.

1. Abeltje [The Flying Liftboy] (1998) NL: 4.2 - Even when given the simplicity and broadness of the plot and characterization some slack because it's a kiddies movie, this is still just badly done.
2. Flesh+Blood (1985) NL: 6.8 - Enjoyable historic action-adventure movie, which in its day got a reputation for its more realistic depiction of violence in the Dark Ages than the usual romantic swashbuckling adventures. But nowadays the movie is most interesting as an transitional piece in Verhoeven's career. This being a Dutch-US-Spain co-production, it's a precursor for his move from the Netherlands to the US. Of course Verhoeven wouldn't be Verhoeven, if there wasn't a subversive message in this about the danger of religious fanaticism.
3. 170 Hz (2011) NL: 7.5 - This movie about two deaf teens running away together is pretty standard in plot, but debuting director Joost van Ginkel succeeds very well in conveying their state of mind with some strong directing. Unfortunate the male lead, Michael Muller, isn't as strong as the female, Gaite Jansen.
4. Quality Time (2017) NL: 7.5 - This movie consist of five small stories of 30something old men struggling with life. Sounds familiar. But for originality in execution this gets a 10. It's very absurd. It doesn't emotionally come together as good as hoped in the end, but I did laugh my ass off at times.
5. Joy (2010) NL: 5.8 - This movie about a young damaged female looking for her real mother feels as a poor copy of a Dardenne movie.

This Dutch film has been championed for its gay subtext and there are indeed hints of this, but everything is so muted here that it is no surprise to learn that the film was misinterpreted by the company that released the film on DVD. Geert Hunaerts does okay in the lead role and there is a pretty neat out-there moment involving a ball that turns out to be more than just a ball, but by the film that the film is over, it feels like it has only just begun.

The sole witness to a murder, a mute American girl finds herself on the run from a killer across the city of Amsterdam - and unable to communicate what is happening - in this nifty thriller from Dick Maas. It is an incredibly good-looking film with daunting low camera shots of the city's tall buildings, atmospheric canal shots and an amazing 360 degree shot at one point. The film is has uneven comedy too though and the killer is too goofy to be scary.

And with that, Holland achieves 100 points and closes the gap (slightly) between NL and BE. :shifty:

2. C'est arrivé près de chez vous / Man bites dog (Belg 92)
I seem to have checked this already - hmm. I guess I remember renting it on VHS but not getting very far, couldn't make head or tail of it. Shows how far my cinematic understanding has come since I joined ICM.

Well, I'm no slouch in the black comedy department, but I had to watch this in 3 pieces. (Being me, I didn't register it as horror.)
Won't be rewatching it any time soon.

Madonna's back-up dancers from her Blond Ambition World Tour are reunited in this documentary. Having all featured prominently in Madonna: True or Dare, the project initially seems like a nostalgic companion piece. As it progresses though, it explores increasingly darker territory, revealing a less sensitive side to Madonna than her public image with lots of ethical questions. The fact that Madonna never has a chance to contribute to the discussion hurts the film a little, but it is mostly fascinating to view, especially as the movie highlights just how big a deal the 1991 doco was in its day.

04. Wilde mossels, by Erik de Bruyn (2002) 6/10 Netherlands

A piece on a group of young zeelanders, one of them desperately wishes to leave for better skies... Not bad, really, but I found the direction quite average...
