I shamelessly snatched the lists from the last Eastern European challenge. If there's anything you'd like added, let me know and I'll modify the OP.

I have a little list, some of which I might even (re)watch.

PS - where does Albania fit in? It was certainly Communist, albeit Maoist (I used to get Radio Tirana on the shortwave in Norway).

I'm in, but it'll be a very low number, no more than a handful. June will be a busy month for me.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Hmm, added Albania. Greece also. If there are any missing, or any in conflict with other challenges, please let me know.

Certainly in. I'll see how I go between this and the 1950s challenge. Thanks for hosting, shugs!

Interesting to see Greece added. I wasn't expecting to see them here and don't have strong feelings either way about the inclusion. The more the merrier I guess!
That's all, folks!

Yeah, Greece is sort of an orphan. We tried a Southern Europe / Mediterranian challenge once (May 2014) but it didn't fly. (I see that I hosted it, which I'd forgotten.)

Since Yugoslavia is listed, that means that every movie made before the breakup counts just for Yugoslavia, right?

what about movies made in eastern european soviet republics other than Russia? are those eligible?

1. Yes, they count for Yugoslavia.

2. They count, but for each respective country, not for the USSR as a whole.

Btw perhaps it’s too late now but Poland is considered Central Europe. They get offended if you call them Eastern Europe.

1) Der Geteilte Himmel (1964, East-Germany).

People here like Konrad Wolf a lot - And rightly so. Third Movie I‘ve seen - Ich war 19 is still the best. But this is a good one too. 7.7/10

1. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005, Romania)

Well, that was pretty bleak. A nice film about many things related to a sick, dying, poor man - bureaucracy, disinterest, pity, etc. A remarkably good film about someone who doesn't want to die. Currently on US Mubi.

1. Houston, we have a problem! (Slovenia 16)

Mockumentary about Tito's government selling the Yugoslav space program to the US during the Kennedy administration, and subsequent events leading to the breakup of Yugoslavia. lots of doctored archival footage. I found it both entertaining and thought-provoking (will know more when I've slept on it).

Well, this is basically the historical eastern europe (1945-92), so it would be odd to add East Germany and not Poland.

But it depends how long we're going to use that labeling. They have been making movies for 27 years now after the end of the cold war. The comparison do get watered thin.

Maybe we should go for EU instead ;)

Thanks for hosting Shugs!

FTV:1: The Proud Princess (1952) Czech. 8.

Image

View on the film:

Becoming a classic shown every Christmas on TV in the Czech Republic, co-writer/(with Henryk Bloch and Oldrich Kautsky) director Borivoj Zeman & cinematographer Jan Roth dance into becoming a seasonal tradition with a lovingly whimsical atmosphere of lavish wide-shots of the wild woods, and lined tracking shots down the corridors of the palace with sparkling attention to detail on the regal clothing and luxury appearance of the location. Breaking into song, Zeman gives the set-pieces a fairy tale romanticism, in layering dissolves of flowers growing to life to each ballad performed.

Whilst mostly care-free, the writers adaptation of Bozena Nemcova’s fairy-tale slyly brings out an allegorical chorus for the grand final, from the locals having been banned by the king from freely expressing themselves in song, and dreams of being able to earn a fair wage. Entering undercover as a gardener, the writers bring a warmth to the romance between Miroslav and Krasomila, by giving Miroslav a Robin Hood vibe in rebelling against the kingdom, and teaching Krasomila the joy of singing and gardening (!) Planting a seed of love when their eyes meet, elegant Alena Vranova gives an enchanting turn as Krasomila, whose toughness over not following all her dads orders,is paired by Krasomila with a sweet gentle tenderness. Swinging into the palace and professing his love in ballads, Vladimir Raz gives a sparkling performance as Miroslav, who is given a swashbuckling energy when supporting the locals, (filled with the outstanding faces of character actors) which is threaded by Raz with a bubbling sincerity over love for the proud princess.
