FTV:23:Transport from Paradise/Transport z ráje (1963) Czech. 10.

Image

Filmed in the real Terezin Ghetto, co-writer/(with Arnost Lustig) director Zbynek Brynych & cinematographer Jan Curik present an utterly harrowing atmosphere, which dissects the Czech New Wave (CNW) stylisation with a almost documentary rawness of slightly out of focus interviews, jagged whip-pans attempting to film a unfolding event, and random lone shots of walls/buildings, (like those at the end of a reel of film.) Brynych's presentation makes a subtle comment on the manipulating manner film can be used (a staged “documentary” is shown being made, where the Nazis force the prisoners to say everything is going fine at the Ghetto for the film.)

Keeping a lone sliver of Jiri Sternwald’s score, Brynych (who was joined by fellow CNW film maker Juraj Herz, who has a small role and was second assistant director) brings a delicate minimalist touch to the soundtrack,as long, silent walks of the prisoners crackles with the landing of feet on the dry ground, and the growing noise of planes coming nearer in the final days of WWII,being matched by the increasing whistles from the train departing to take prisoners to camps. A survivor of The Holocaust ( a train taking him to his death in Dachau was dive-bombed by a US fighter-bomber) Arnost Lustig’s (who said on the film: “The movie sometimes goes beyond the book.”) intelligent adaptation of his own book with co-writer Brynych avoids any War Film stereotypes to instead hit a realist tone of the Nazis degrading/ sending the prisoners to death,in a chillingly casual manner, whilst the victims are dragged into doing depressing, mundane tasks until the train to the camps returns to the Ghetto.

FTV:24:Ecstasy (1933). Czech-Austria co-production. 7

Image

The Ecstasy of Gold.

Part-Silent Movie/Part-Talkie, co-writer/(with Frantisek Horky and Jacques A. Koerpel) director Gustav Machaty makes both formats hold together with a refined Expressionism style spun from evocative close-ups on Hermann’s face with eye-catching shards of light illuminating the disintegration of Hermann and Emil’s marriage. Going on only a five page script (!) Machaty makes each snippet of dialogue count, by using it to open up Hermann’s innermost feelings in crisp outdoor sequences, and to also unveil the drained state Emil and Hermann share.

Adapting Robert Horky’s novel into a really short and sweet script, the writers do very well at drawing a silky smooth Melodrama by holding Hermann as the key to it all,who hands out the wish fulfilment in this “Women’s Picture” of falling passionate in love with a strapping young woodsmen, met at a time when Hermann’s psychological sexual desires are reaching the surface. Lying that she was older than 17 when production started in 1932, Hedy Lamarr owns the film as Hermann, thanks to Lamarr taking left-field choices with her expressive performance, such as playing scenes when topless not as sexual, but joyfully free and liberating, and bringing a frustrated, downcast withdrawn state to Hermann on her marriage lacking any feeling of ecstasy.

As her attitude and behaviour shifts and morphs during the course of her prison stay, Krystyna Janda provides an intense and convincing performance here of an individual frustrated by a seemingly impossible situation. The movie also benefits from a strong Kafkaesque vibe, channeled through the plot (she is not told her crimes but asked to confess) as well as the drab sets and dark lighting with the whole world seeming to swallow her up.

As a narrative, this plays out a lot like Citizen Kane, full of flashbacks as a postman's son encounters various acquaintances of the great artist who each have a different opinion of the elusive man. Unlike Citizen Kane though, there are large stretches of the film dedicated to the interviewer going about his business, whereas the strength of the film lies in its flashbacks, with the black and white sequences (see above) especially well done.

Three separate tales of Polish children trying to survive in war are stitched together here. The first tale is very decent, focused on a lost boy who tags along with a soldier. The second tale is weaker, without much sense of impending danger or urgency as focus turns to a boy looking after his brothers. The third tale (which accounts for the film's title) is an absolute masterpiece though. Powered through by a mesmerising turn by its young lead actress, it depicts a harrowing tale of a Jewish orphan girl trying to find safety and shelter. The episode concludes on a breathtaking ambiguous final shot too.

FTV:26: The Shop on Main Street (1965).Czech. 8.

Image

“There’s an old saying that two glasses help you sing, three help you to embrace, and five help you to quarrel.”

Opening the shop just a few days before the first Jews and the “Slovak Republic” (a client state of the Nazis) being created, the screenplay by co-writers/(with Ladislav Grosman) co-directors Jan Kadar and Elmar Klos surprisingly begins with the scent of a comedic tone as Tono finds his hands full with dotty Lautmannova. Beneath the comedic side, the writers gradually build a psychological study of Tono, whose poor state has him jump at the chance to be a "Aryan controller" who will get bundles of cash from taking over the business, until the seeping of Nazi rule hits Tono with the realisation of what other locals are being complicit in. Whilst the state of Tono’s mind is laid bare, the writers spend a little too long in keeping Lautmannova in a dotty mode, where instead of displaying a change in her relationship to Tono, Lautmannova is kept completely unaware and dotty, until the plot needs for her to become aware in the last 20 minutes, rather than a gradual pace.

Surviving being placed in a labor camp, (and his parents and sister being murdered at Auschwitz) Jan Kadar continues what would become a 17 year collaboration with fellow co-writer/co-director Elmar Klos with a potent atmosphere from graceful two-shot whip-pans opening the fraught relationship between Lautmannova and Tono. Unlocking the anxiety of Tono on the Nazis entering the shop with fractured close-up angles, the directors & cinematographer Vladimir Novotny brilliantly build-up a dark, poetic edge touching on a Jesus motif for Tono, and a transcendence, tragic dream final. Spending the film together, Ida Kaminska and Jozef Kroner give outstanding, complimentary performances as Lautmannova and Tono, thanks to the compassionate, care-free state Kaminska dresses Lautmannova in,being a excellent balance to the raw with hurt and fear Kroner finds Tono with in the shop on main street.

Dusan Makavejev interviews the cast and crew of a Serbian film released but then withdrawn from circulation in this unusual documentary. Makavejev splices in footage of the original at random points, toying with the order of the action at times and occasionally hand-tinting certain frames (see above). The film's acrobat lead actor also re-performs many of his stunts, and the stunts themselves are quite amazing feats of balance and human strength. The film provides a limited insight into the controversy the film sparked and the background of the acrobat, but this is daringly different stuff.

And that's it for me this round. Thanks for hosting, shugs! I always enjoy your fun stats. I peaked a little too late here (too much focus on Video Nasties) to explore this region as much as I would have liked, but I saw some very good films this month, including a masterpiece or two, and it was wonderful having an incentive to check out Roman Polanski's very worthwhile (mostly silent) early short films.

Czech out the Polish food, makes me HungaryShow

1- 5 are from Czechoslovakia.

1. Kocár do Vídne / Carriage to Vienna (Karel Kachyna, 1966)
2. Horí, má panenko / The Fireman's Ball (Milos Forman, 1967)
3. Cesta do praveku / A Journey to the Beginning of Tme (Karel Zeman, 1955)
4. Happy End (Oldrich Lipský , 1967)
5. Marketa Lazarová (Frantisek Vlácil, 1967)
6. Czlowiek na torze / Man on the Tracks (Andrzej Munk, 1957) Poland

Late at night, a train hits a man on the tracks and kills him. It turns out that the man is an experienced, recently retired locomotive engineer, Orzechowski (Kazimierz Opalinski), and an investigation is opened up, resulting in a Rashomon-like narrative where several other employees at the rail yard are questioned, each giving somewhat different responses as to Orzechowski's character and the events leading up to the tragedy. While this isn't anything I, and most reading this, haven't seen before, and much in the story develops along expected lines, it's still an excellent film in significant part due to Opalinski's extraordinary performance as a proud, irascible, often unpleasant and arrogant old man, resentful of being put out to pasture for younger, less experienced men - but always holding onto a certain belief that the job is a responsibility and something more than himself. We start out seeing him as pretty much an asshole but the conviction in the performance and the skillful and nuanced writing of the character in the end give us a beautiful portrait of a troubled man who still has the capacity to astonish his coworkers, even in death.

7. Eroica (Andrzej Munk, 1958) Poland

A two-parter, with a broadly comic take on the end, or near-end, of WWII and a man who's trying to scam and fake and hide his way through the war, followed by a much more serious and sober study of the inmates in a POW camp, and the legendary escape made by one of them that turns out to be a legend indeed. This is a solid piece of work overall, though at first I didn't feel that I got why these two very different stories are put together; apart from the temporal setting they don't have that much to do with each other; on further reflection a possibility emerges though that both are in a sense ironic reflections on the title - the "heroism" of service-dodger Gorkiewicz in the first part, and of the inmates in the second part, especially one who hides throughout, and one who goes out to his death seemingly deliberately; I suppose it's all an ironic counterpoint to our ordinary notions of what a heroic act is. Overall I probably liked the first story better; the copy I saw had somewhat unreliable subs I think, which at times made the comedy a little funnier in unintended ways.

8. Na komete / On the Comet (Karel Zeman, 1970) Czechoslovakia

Theoretically based on the Jules Verne novel Hector Servadac, but a quick look at the synopsis of that work shows almost nothing in common, apart from the central conception of an extra-solar or unknown planetary body swinging by earth and taking part of it off on a swing through the solar system, with lots of hapless people on board the new planet. This looks in style closest to Zeman's Munchhausen film Baron Prášil, which is easily my favorite of his films, so I was really enjoying it at first, but while it remains worthwhile as a whole for the delightful FX and mixture of stop-motion animation, book-illustration backgrounds, mattes, etc - it's every bit as visually inventive as the early Munchhausen film - it falls short in being just not that interesting as a narrative, and awfully silly. The French, Spanish, English and Arabs who are carried off when a portion of the western Mediterranean is ripped away mostly act like children and it's only the surveyor/soldier Hector Servadac, and the girl who saves him who looks just like the image on a playing card (much more could have been done with this element) - played by the utterly charming Magda Vásáryová, who played the title role in Marketa Lazarova - who give the film any real feeling of narrative drive. Lots of pretty pictures - which is enough for me to at least like it - but not a whole lot else.

07. Meres tou '36, by Theo Angelopoulos (1972) 7/10 - Greece

An interesting approach to political smothering. The fact it was shot under a dictatorship forces it to be subtle and insinuate rather than reveal. I found it worked well...

7. Eroica (Andrzej Munk, 1958) Poland
8. Na komete / On the Comet (Karel Zeman, 1970) Czechoslovakia
9. Petla / The Noose (Wojciech Has, 1958) Poland

Pretty simple and straightforward narrative from the guy who would later go on to make complex surrealist masterpieces like Sanatorium pod klepsydra, though there are hints of oddness sprinkled throughout in this tale of an alcoholic and his struggles over one day in which drinking, trying to not drink, love, regret and thoughts of suicide all intermingle. It's powerfully done, and has a beautiful noirish deep-focus visual style that presents the post-war city that protagonist Kuba lives in as something hard and unforgiving and full of people that he clearly sees as simultaneously lower and more moral than he is. For me it's underwhelmed slightly by a certain staginess in the acting and some of the scenes go on a bit long (particularly the very pathetic bar scene near the end), and there's nothing really "new" here, but it's still pretty compelling and visually excellent.

10. Zelimir Zilnik shorts 12+18+11+17+15 = 73 minutes Yugoslavia

a) Pioniri maleni, mi samo vojska prava, svakog dana nicemo ko zelena trava / Little Pioneers (1967)
b) Ustanak u Jasku / Uprising in Jazak (1973)
c) Lipanjska gibanja (1969)
d) Crni film / Black Film (1971)
e) Zurnal o omladini na selu zimi / News of Village Youth in Winter (1967)

Five early shorts from the Serbian documentarian, who later turned to both documentary and fiction features. I guess he's pretty obscure - at least around here as only one of his films (the third on this list) is Official - but he probably deserves some looking into. I didn't love any of these little vignettes of life in Yugoslavia in that era, but they do as a whole give me some notions of that depressing era, and Zilnik's burgeoning strengths as a filmmaker. While these little stories are mostly fairly conventional - teenagers acting like teenagers, old people reminiscing about how life used to be better and how the kids today suck, former partisans in WWII re-living their victories and defeats, etc, the editing is sharp and the restrained but significant use of folk music through most of them is beautiful. Crni film, in which the director invites several homeless men into his own small apartment (shared with wife and child) to shed light on the joblessness and homelessness in the country, is probably my favorite here, but it's not hard to see why the polemical protest study Lipanjska gibanja is the one to make the Vogel list and the one that gets seen the most.

11. Rekopis znaleziony w Saragossie / The Saragossa Manuscript (Wojciech Has, 1965) Poland (re-watch)

Image

I first saw this in the cinema sometime in the 90s; it may have been a shorter version but my memory is dim - what stood out most at the time was the gorgeous b/w Cinemascope framing, the landscapes and set design, and the incredible abundance of beautiful large-chested women; Russ Meyer must have been envious. I didn't know it at the time but it was a favorite of both Luis Buñuel and Jerry Garcia (who apparently helped raise money for a restoration) and those are significant bits of trivia for me today, so it's something I've looked forward to re-viewing for a long time. And it was very much worth it - as a few commentators have noted, it doesn't at all feel it's length, thanks largely to the variety of stories, locations, and characters, and it's "light" enough (despite an obsessive focus on corpses and skulls) to be entertaining and even pretty funny at times throughout. And I personally love the stories-within-stories idea, which is carried as far here as it is anywhere (sorry Mr. Nolan, you can't compete). Zbigniew Cybulski, the "Polish James Dean" - who always reminds me more of Marcello Mastroianni - is almost unrecognizable here without his trademark sunglasses but he's compelling as always in the lead role (if there can be said to be one) as the Napoleonic-era Spanish solider/nobleman Alfonse van Worden. There's an awful lot to unpack in this film and I probably should have watched in when more wide-awake and sober, but then again the alcohol perhaps enhanced some of the more dream-like elements. Certainly one of my favorite Polish films or films from Eastern Europe generally, and just about in a tie with Marketa Lazarová for best of the few films I managed to see in this challenge.

I'm done, so thanks for hosting shugs; given the general very high quality of what I saw, and how ignorant I am of this region, I really wish I'd been able to contribute more. Next time...

Thanks for hosting shugs.

FTV:28: Bílá paní (1965)Czech. 8.

“Here we are entering a new phase of history, and they want to go calling out ghost!”

Inspired by the real Czech Folk tale the Perchta of Rozemberk, director Zdenek Podskalsky & cinematographer Frantisek Valert bring a kitsch Bewitched atmosphere to the glowing appearances of The White Lady, who casts spells, (which includes a funny gag involving freezing someone else in her painting) to improve the shortcomings in the economy and society of 1960’s Czech, with stop/start camera pauses, and ghostly overlapped images tracking The White Lady walking through walls. Following The White Lady by keeping the film in a whimsical mood,Podskalsky picks up a satirical wand to burst the self-importance of the local Communist/Government in stylish, imposing upwards wide-shots on the locals in charge making grand, vapid speeches trying to come up with explanations for The White Lady.

Framing The White Lady as a unexplainable supernatural being, the screenplay by Karel Michal brilliantly takes the light fantasy and paints it with funny satirical flourishes brushed from the local Commie party attempting to place the “miracles” of White Lady into their designated, micro-managed boxes. While taking digs at the local bureaucracy,Michal refreshingly avoids a bitterness in the comedic tone, (the film later got banned from being shown during the Soviet Occupation) instead going for warm,folk-flavoured mishaps, as the local government ( which includes a hilarious Rudolf Hrusinsky as puffed-up predseda MNV) fumble to offer rational explanations for the improvements made by The White Lady.
