A woman's torrid love affair is paralleled to flash-forwards of an autopsy and investigation of her murder here. While the non-linear structure is jarring at first, it adds much mystery and a sense of doom. The film's best aspect though is its pseudo-documentary introduction and other documentary style clips throughout, though these are infrequent. Dusan Makavejev keeps things entertaining throughout though with lots of visual gag humour (holding milk cartons over her bare breasts; a pussy cat sitting in front of her nude body) and some pure whimsy, like her childlike fascination with soap bubbles.

13. Medium (1985) Poland

While the premise is intriguing here, the complexity of the mythology leads to many non-atmospheric dialogue-heavy scenes; it also results in character development taking a big backseat to discussions about parapsychology and the occult. The film additionally makes little of its period setting (the 1930s during the rise of Nazism) but this is too intriguing a movie to discount altogether with amnesic, manipulated characters and possession themes.

14. Erotikon (1929) Czech

Image

Contrary to the title, this film is not erotic and has no nudity, but Gustav Machatý handles the chemistry between his leads very well. A dissolve-over of their faces on top of each other indicates strong attraction from early on, and there is a heated chess match in the final half-hour in which their looks (and her heavy breathing) convey all. The middle of the film is a mess though in between the initial courtship and their latter chance meeting again.

FTV:16: The End of Agent W4C (1967) Czech. 10.

Image

Taking the ingredients which were already becoming staples of the genre, the screenplay by co-writer/(with Oldrich Danek and Milos Macourek) director Vaclav Vorlicek shakes (but not stirred) the Euro Spy genre into a delightful creation, where everything is heightened to a hilariously absurdest level, fired up from Agent W4C and fellow agent Alice are sharing drinks whilst every rival spy (all dressed in the same coats!) openly keep their heads turned towards the duo, and a demo by the Q-type of W4C’s handy new clock gadget, backfiring in his hands. Sending fish out of water accountant Foustka in as the main rival to take down the duo, the writers layer on the laughs in Foustka’s (a terrific, bumbling Jiri Sovak) mishaps to remain incognito around W4C, (a great, slick Jan Kacer) which leads to a wonderfully left-field twist ending,as Foustka turns out to be not as dumb as he appeared.

Greeting W4C and Alice (a alluring, sexy Kveta Fialova) like superstars with other spies listening in from every corner, director Vorlicek & cinematographer Frantisek Uldrich bring the Euro Spy glamour to Eastern Europe, in W4C and Alice being kept in pin-sharp clothes and Pop-Art close-ups on the effortless coolness, neatly counted by the grubby, hapless appearance of Foustka (who even gets outsmarted by his own cute dog.) Confronting W4C and Alice with a endless row of counter-intelligence / rival spies, Vorlicek pours out sparkling action set-pieces, bubbling in a explosive hotel fight where rockets and punches smack the walls, and Foustka dives into winning a swimming contest, and afterwards dives into ending Agent W4C.

FTV:17:Killing the Devil (1970). Czech. 8.

Image

Full movie with Eng Subs:

“A slightly deaf lady is no use to the world, but a deaf genius, that is the salt and spice in a good society.”

Stepping in after the original chosen director Jan Nemec was barred from working over protesting against the Soviet Occupation of the country, writer/director Ester Krumbachova & cinematographer Jiri Macak take the glossy slickness of Hollywood “Women’s Picture” via startling sequences of Ona talking straight to camera in a gold framed mirror, and a outstanding use of vibrant colours, with the bright pinks of Ona’s clothes, the pristine white walls and the jaunty score from Angelo Michajlov, and dice it all with a Czech New Wave (CNW) experimentation. Retaining the CNW spirit of Nemec, Krumbachova subtly serves up food in the meals between Ona and “Devil” as a expression of status between them,by at first having Devil pile his plate high with luxury foods cooked by Ona, a plate which becomes cracked as Ona plucks raisins of independence.

Matching what is visually served on the plates, the screenplay by Krumbachova takes the CNW exploration of femininity and dips it into off-beat fantastical surrealism, by pairing the thoughtful character study of Ona breaking her own demons and finding her voice during the dinners with Devil, with heavenly whirls of demonic phone calls, and Ona throwing her Devil past into a sack of raisins. Putting a two-hander on the dinner table,Jirina Bohdalova and Vladimir Mensik each give excellent performances which compliment each other, thanks to Mensik having Devil be a greedy slob with a sharp underline of aggression, whilst Bohdalova threads a broken Ona away from the luxuries in her apartment,to brimming with confidence in a battle of the sexes that kills the devil.

04. Ostatni dzien lata, by Tadeusz Konwicki (1958) 6/10 - Poland

Beautifully filmed, with shots that look like superb photographs, and probably an innovative approach to the post WW2 unease, but I found the movie to be too theoretical for my taste.

05. Filantropica, by Nae Caranfil (2002) 8,5/10 - Romania

One of the best written comedies I've watched in a while. The subject is quite original, quite relevant in that period's Romania, and the acting was fantastic. I'm glad I discovered it.

Svankmajer style stop motion animation is combined with footage of actual live rats in this unique-looking take on the classic Pied Piper story. Clocking in at under one hour, the film only really ever works as a fable (character development is sketchy) but what a fable it is - especially with the dark twist alternate ending opted for here. Atmospheric music throughout too, weird and wacky sets and cool techniques like the characters spitting out coins when haggling prices; it is easy to see why this one ranks highly on the 500<400 list and iCM Most Favorite List, though it is certainly not for all tastes.

FTV:18:The Murderer Hides His Face (1966). Czech. 10

“I think that divorce is divorce, right? And to get ahead of yourself like this is fraud.”

Image

Crawling the camera across the face of a murder victim as Pavel Blatny's brooding score stings, co-writer/(with Lubomir Mozny) director Petr Schulhoff & cinematographer Jiri Vojta plough an incredibly eerie rural Film Noir atmosphere of long, winding wide-shots catching the locals search for victims, whilst also keeping one eye on outsider detective Kalas. Attempting to sand down the stone walls of local life, Schulhoff blocks Kalsa with stylish, restrained panning shots in the cramped houses of suspects, reflecting Kalsa and Varga being squeezed out getting a full picture of the locals.

The second in a 4 film series, the screenplay by Schulhoff and Mozny keep Kalsa and Varga as the lone links to the first, as they take him deep to the heart of rural Film Noir, where excellent dialogue cracks open the suspicion that the cops are held in,as “help” from the locals is pinned with threats over being not from these parts, and the locals wanting to keep things out of mind and out of sight, especially when it is outsiders trying to dig a hole into their town. Cutting the blades of grass down by at first appearing to be a search for a single missing person/murder victim, the writers brilliantly entwine the vines of mutterings and whispers from the locals into pulling Kalsa and Varga into cutting down the lies and half-truths the locals try to cover their eyes with. Receiving a less than warm local welcome, Rudolf Hrusinsky and Radoslav Brzobohaty give wonderfully calculating, hard-nosed turns as Varga and Kalas, both determined to find the killer who is hiding his face.

If noticeably derivative of the Saw movies and Die Hard with a Vengeance, this thriller begins well with lots of thrills and chills as both the protagonist and local police try to solve the riddles before bombs are exploded at various locations. The movie completely nosedives in the final half-hour though with lots of silly psychobabble and ridiculous plot turns. The acting is also uneven at best throughout, but some of the good vs evil ideas are decent.

Apparently a satire on Poland's then-socialist dictatorship with its portrait of a person with no authority who eventually assumes power over everyone else. The satire never quite feels as pointed as it could have been though; the humiliations he causes are pretty mild (making the adult passengers play leapfrog and make animal noises) and the satiric discussions about voting and how to punish a pervert are few and far between. There are some fun self-referential puns though as the characters complain about Polish movies having little plot and bad dialogue compared to foreign counterparts.

FTV:19:I Served the King of England (2006). Czech. 7.

Image

Going back into extended flashbacks as Dite rebuilds a deserted house, writer/directing auteur Jiri Menzel & regular cinematographer
Jaromír Sofr dine on grand symmetry shots at Dite’s (a wonderfully quirky Ivan Barnev, and a earthy Oldrich Kaiser as a older Dite) time at a grand hotel in Prague, bringing out a comedic atmosphere in the lining of waiters/guests at the hotel with Ales Brezina’s brassy score. Linking the decades of Dite’s life, Menzel continues building his sarcastic, humorous edge with stylised dissolves, that along with capturing his eyes over the years, gives Dite’s lover the face of Hitler.

Serving an adaptation of Bohumil Hrabal’s (a regular collaborator) novel which came out in 1983 after getting banned from being published in 1971, Menzel wonderfully continues to peel the themes of Closely Observed Trains (1966-also reviewed) on how the Czech population did not face the severity of the Nazis edging closer to the Occupation, reported on cinema reels and radio to a half-interested crowd. Spending decades trying to get the film made, Menzel makes striking similarities between Hrabal and Trains Hrma,in both working at a train station, (Hrabal for part-time) an awkwardness where they both have an inability to fit in with the rest of the staff, and a peculiar comedic slant to their sexual encounters, as Dite learns how the king of England was served.

Not quite the acute identity crisis tale that the premise promises. Agata Trzebuchowska is enchanting at first with her wide eyes, but this 'deer in the highlights' routine is her only expression throughout and she comes off as cold overall as neither her parents' fate nor what happens to aunt elicits any other emotional response. The film is very thoughtfully photographed though with Trzebuchowska framed in the corners and edges of nearly every shot.

FTV:20: A Game Without Rules (1967).Czech. 9.

Image

“He’s a detective, he’s paid to be unpleasant.”

Breaking in with a 8 minute robbery, the skill co-writer/(with Vaclav Sasek and Ludek Stanek) director Jindrich Polak later showed in the staging of physical comedy in 1977’s Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea is on display here in the dialogue-free opening sequence, as Polak runs down the streets of Prague to the thieves staking out the jeweler's shop, who Polak follows by circling them on screen, (a clever precursor to the photos the cops are later shown to have)and grabbing them out of the middle of real crowds with swift wide-shot zoom-ins. Driving to the beat of Wiliam Bukovy’s outstanding blend of Hard Jazz/ Electronic score, Polak & cinematographer Rudolf Milic shine a diamond Film Noir atmosphere, lit by intense close-ups on the faces of the robbers, covered with scars over the passage of time since the robbery, joined by crisp tracking shots diving into the shadows which the thieves try to remain under.

Playing the game over 4 years (the movie skips to “Four years later”) the screenplay by Polak/Sasek and Stanek weighs the passage of time down on criminologist Malek, whose inability to get all the thieves found guilty leaves Malek with a itch which leads him to cross lines and leave blood on the tracks. Going their own ways after the robbery, each gang members attempt to remain under cover becomes thrillingly splintered from mistrust seeping on from one dying during the getaway, to tense paranoia, from Malek continuing to press on and fight to get closer to them. Firming holding his ground over the passing of time, Svatopluk Matyas brings out a gripping slow-burn intensity into Malek’s growing obsession leaving him as the lone figure trying to stop a game without rules.

This drama is pleasant enough to look at and both leads are fine. The episodic narrative structure got on my nerves though, with years at a time passing between some scenes - something that made it hard for me to appreciate the character growth at hand. There is invariably something to like in the way fate keeps reuniting the couple as if they were destined to always be together, but I would have preferred for the Cold War to be less in the backdrop.

FTV:21:Larks on a String (Lettboxd list 1969,IMDb list 1990.) Czech. 8.

“We abolished saxophones as bourgeois instruments.”

Image

Beginning production during the Prague Spring and Alexander Dubcek’s "Socialism with a human face",only to end just after the Soviet invasion and a 20 year ban being slapped on the film. The earthy, surrealist humour underneath co-writer/directing auteur Jiri Menzel’s regular collaborations with writer Bohumil Hrabal are pushed to the front here via a deliriously sarcastic streak of humour ruthlessly satirising Communism (Menzel afterwards got banned for 5 years from making films) via the scatter-shot mini-tales taking in the forced workers making vast quantities of poor quality steel which no one needs or wants, and the secret police taking people to work at the yard for the most absurd reasons.

Whilst being far more comedic than Closely Observed Trains (1966-also reviewed)the humanist outlook of Menzel and Hrabal is a major theme that they wonderfully continue to explore here,in the "bourgeois elements" being grounded down by guards for re-education/to become worker drones, holding onto what they hold dear, to the point of even defying the eyes of the guards with rebellious romance. Sticking posters on the walls ripping into the vapid slogans of totalitarian on “Comrades” working for the good of all, director Menzel reunites with cinematographer Jaromir Sofr and turn the scrap yard into a excellent, post-apocalypse wasteland, where tracking shots round the slabs of rusting metal make it appear all of humanity has been wiped out, only for Menzel to zoom in on the holes in the metal,to find larks on a string.

FTV:22: Ashes and Diamonds (1958).Poland. 9.

Shining when the French New Wave was gathering pace, while also being taken by the elegance of US cinema such as Citizen Kane (1941), co-writer/(with Jerzy Andrzejewski) directing auteur Andrzej Wajda & cinematographer Jerzy Wojcik create an immaculate fusion of the two, in Wajda and Wojcik using sets for truly immense wide-shots filling the screen from the floor to the ceiling, which are threaded with fluid, outdoor tracking shots gliding round the crumbling side-streets with Chelmicki. Taking place in the raw post-WWII aftermath,Wajda contrasts the dialogue via putting the title through a modern filter of dazzling, ultra-stylised low shadows and burning bright white lights, with a New Wave “in the moment” atmosphere from stark close-ups crossed with depth of field corner shots hitting Chelmicki’s conflicting mind-set.

Altering the adaptation from Jerzy Andrzejewski’s more blunt view in the novel, the screenplay by Wajda and Andrzejewski have the fear of holding alliances linger in an air of hushed dialogue about “The Uprising”, and anxiety over which new combating force (the Soviets and the anti-Communist underground forces) can get a footing over what direction the country takes. Offering little light in the title, the writers bring a sweetness to the bubbling romance between Krystyna and Chelmicki, with the care-free nature they share being finely balanced by the tightening of screws over the assassination orders weighing hard on Chelmicki’s loyalties.

Standing out in the middle of a grubby bar, Ewa Krzyzewska gives a mesmerising, expressive turn as Krystyna, whose flirting and compassion tugs at Chelmicki. Looking incredibly cool in every frame, Zbigniew Cybulski gives an astonishing performance as Chelmicki, due to the “natural” acting method of Cybulski bringing an intimate fragility over Chelmicki having to decide to choose either ashes or diamonds.

Luminita Gheorghiu is well cast in the lead role here with some particularly powerful moments towards the end, though the real strength of the film is the way it presents the story just from her side. We do not see the central crash, nor do we spend much time with the victim's family as the film rather questions the value of legal justice; it is fair for her son's whole future to be ruined due to a split second driving error? The film is let down a bit by an excess of jerky zooms and camera pans. The tale is also nowhere near as dark as it could have been, but the film left a quiet, undeniable impact on me.

All of my choices are from Czechoslovakia unless otherwise noted.

1. Kocár do Vídne / Carriage to Vienna (Karel Kachyna, 1966)

I must admit that I had not heard of this film at all until joining this site and seeing it's rise on 500<400; I"m definitely thankful for this forum and the other site for enhancing my knowledge of and interest in Czech cinema as much as anything else, and I'm a little sad that we had to do this challenge this month, when I haven't had the time. Oh well. This is a great example of cinematic minimalism - minimalism in terms of plot, in any case, as we watch for the whole running time a young Czech woman during the war trying to escape from a couple of Nazis - one severely wounded - who have commandeered her wagon and are forcing her to take them somewhere along an old forest road. Gorgeously shot in b/w Cinemascope - perhaps my favorite format - and with a terrific central performance by Iva Janzurová, this is a really solid and impressive film overall, but I suspect it's the highly ironic ending with the partisans that put it on a lot of folks' radar, and while it certainly works I guess I... I don't know, expected a little more for some reason? In any case, if not quite a masterpiece still quite memorable and a good start for my brief tour of this cinema.

2. Horí, má panenko / The Fireman's Ball (Milos Forman, 1967)

Another very simple film in terms of it's plotting, Forman's third and last film made in his home country (until 2009) is a satire on Czech (and implicitly Soviet, and Communist) bureaucracy - a group of volunteer firemen hold a party/dance/dinner/beauty pageant in honor of their elder and retiring leader that goes entirely awry - that seems rather soft, amusing and gentle at first but gradually grows darker and angrier as it goes on - though still always maintaining a predominantly humorous tone. This is a film that practically everybody but me has seen so I"m not sure what I can add to any discussion, particularly since I remain fairly ignorant of the politics of the time and place, but it's a pretty wonderful film at any rate and probably the best thing I've seen from this director. And the ending is one of those entirely predictable but still very funny moments that you just wait for and can't help smiling at. All the theft, all the lies, all the jokes.

3. Cesta do praveku / A Journey to the Beginning of Tme (Karel Zeman, 1955)

A bunch of young school boys, studying early geology, find a mysterious cave and take an imaginary voyage down a river back into the prehistoric past, encountering cave men and dinosaurs. This was the least-interesting of the Zeman films I've seen, though it might have some value to kids as an educational tool, which seems to be what it was intended as. Pretty good stop-motion and other animation - not on the level of Harryhausen but I'm sure this didn't have a budget anything like American films at the time.

4. Happy End (Oldrich Lipský , 1967)

Another 500<400 flick that I might not have known about - at least not for a long time - without this site, and probably my favorite of the first four films in this challenge, though I liked all except for the Zeman quite a lot. An amazingly well put-together dark comedy about a murderer, showing his whole life running backwards from the moment of his execution, narrated by him, this makes use of footage run backwards and backwards dialogue at times, what is most remarkable - and obviously mostly intended - is how often the dialogue seems to work almost equally well run either in correct or in backwards order; hard to explain but if you've seen it you'll probably know what I mean. I found myself on one viewing mostly responding to the humor, and the often wonderful low-budget effects (the guy going out the window looks really good for example) but I suspect there is more meat to be found on a subsequent viewing.

5. Marketa Lazarová (Frantisek Vlácil, 1967)

A very challenging, often fairly obtuse but nearly always mesmerizing historical epic, shot like the first film in this challenge in 2.35 b/w and absolutely stunning both in sound and image - I watched about 1/3 of it with headphones and while it's in mono the way the dialogue, effects and music are integrated is quite complex. This feels comparable in many respects to the previous year's Andrei Rublev and would make an amazing - if very long - double feature with that. Certainly they are very different - Tarkovsky was a very sincere believer and I have no idea if Vlácil was, and the treatments of religion are certainly quite different and faith plays very different roles, and this film doesn't really have a central character in the same sense that the Tarkovsky film has. But in the recreation of a medieval world in which religion, faith, spirit, nature, science and medicine were all much more intimately related, all more or less the same thing, there are quite a few parallels, and both certainly portray the horrors of war and the very explicit inhumanity of man towards anyone that isn't just like him - including women - with grimness and little solace. I wish I could say more about this but it really demands some reading and another viewing, which I doubt it'll get soon - and it's also a film that jumps high on my list of things to see in the cinema some day, if there's ever the possibility. Even without really knowing what I watched - extraordinary.
