No, many norwegian movies are shot in Hungary now because it is cheaper. None of them is East European.

Going through the Production companies there is none czech based even. Only Korea and USA.

Just like Bond 25 and Black Widow are shot in Norway right now. There is a local line producer, and thus a location production company, but these are paid for their involvment, they don't fund anything.

There seems to be Stillking Films (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillking_Films). Going through some IMDb pages, Casino Royale and Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol are also listed as Czech films. :circle:

Even though co-productions are allowed, there needs to be more of an Eastern European involvement besides financial reasons for the movie to be eligible. So, I'm not counting Snowpiercer as a valid entry for this challenge.

3. H-8... (1958) Yugoslavia

5. The Rabbit Is Me (1965) East Germany

6. The Axe of Wandsbek (1951) East Germany

A haunting drama from East Germany, best comparable to The Informer as the protagonist's initial elation at receiving so much money (for standing in as a Nazi executioner) soon turns to regret and paranoia that his friends and neighbours will found out. There is an especially compelling subplot as he repeatedly tries to get rid of the titular axe that he used in the execution, only for it to keep returning to him. Great shadowy final shots too.

Thanks for the clarifications, albajos/shugs.

And now I've reordered the list of production countries on TMDB so this one will stop showing up in my Eastern Europe searches.

An an extremely minimalist production without a single word uttered for thirteen minutes and characters who are never developed beyond plot function or even named. This restraint is admirable and makes the handheld shots that follow the characters through the woods and abandoned carriages more visceral since their actions is all that we have to care about - but it also creates an emotional distance that made it hard for me to connect to them.

FTV:13: The Boxer and Death (1963).Czech. 10.

Image

“I love red roses, they grow wild in our place.”

Shadowing Kraft’s boxing training over the opening credits,co-writer/(with Jozef Hen and Tibor Vichta) director Peter Solan & cinematographer Tibor Biath hit a knock out with an exceptional cut to Kraft in his Nazi uniform. Held prisoner by the ropes round the ring and the wire round the camp, Solan displays a Czech New Wave (CNW) stylisation in the precision of framing the sickening smoke from the gas chambers in the background as a constant reminder for Kominek, to the black, engulfing death that rules every move he makes in the ring. Facing off against the boxing Nazi,Solan makes each round Kominek takes nail-biting, a subtle sound design giving the punches a thump, which is handled with elegant, spaced two-shots freely letting tension build, all topped by CNW experimentation in going first-person for the knock-out.

Based upon the life of Polish boxer Tadeusz "Teddy" Pietrzykowski (who survived being in the Auschwitz and Neuengamme concentration camps) the screenplay by Solan/ Hen and Vichta make what should be genres which stand at odds with each other, (Sports, War and Drama) become an allied force with incredible ease. Chained to entering the ring by Kraft, the writers dig into the burning fearful pressure on Kominek to pull his punches, in full Knowledge that Kraft can have him sent to the gas chamber with a mere click of his fingers. At first a punching bag for Kraft, the writers delicately re-build the confidence of Kominek that the Nazis have tried to strip into a bitter sweet crescendo where the sound of the bell from the boxing ring fades, but Kominek can never feel freedom from the siren of the camp.

Possibly playing the only Nazi in cinema shown using a skipping rope, Manfred Krug gives a ferocious performance as Kraft, via keeping his viciousness always under the surface, where even when Kraft is being playful towards Kominek, Krug keeps Kraft power-dominating claws visible. Pushing himself up from the mat, Stefan Kvietik gives an excellent, hard-hitting turn as Kominek, pulling no punches in expressing across Kominek’s face towards the loyally he has towards his fellow prisoners, and the psychological calculations he must make as the boxer who faces death.

3. Nevinost bez zastite / Innocence unprotected (Yugo 68)
A film made during the occupation in 1942 intercut with later interviews with the people involved, archive footage, etc. - delightfully strange. [Criterion] (ICM claims I checked this in 2012, but I have no memory of it.)

Hello, morrison! I've been enjoying your participation on this challenge too, and especially delighted to see such a positive response to Peter Solan's 'Boxer a smrt', a favorite. I liked Chytilová's 'The Apple Game' very much, especially in how it creates a vivid space full of life's contradictions and everyday struggles around a most charming character - woman, nurse, midwife. A very feminine film, with a camera as intuitive and surprising as its heroine.

It is quite amazing how without dialogue and lots of swooping camera movements, Roman Polanski manages to spin quite an affecting tale of a lonely old woman in When Angels Fall. Equally ambitious is fellow dialogue-free Polanski offering Two Men and a Wardrobe. This one is fashioned like a silent comedy and has a fun cameo from a very young Polanski in a similar scene to his iconic cameo in Chinatown. I also didn't realise until reading up afterwards that it is meant to be a satire on the difficulty of fitting in the world when one comes out of the closet. Usmiech zebiczny is more silent stuff from Polanski; this time a pretty simple and tame tale of a pervert's disappointment. A bit hard to recommend except as a curio. Lev a písnicka is yet another dialogue free Eastern European short – this time an animated one from Czechoslovakia. For a film whose title translates as ‘The Lion and the Song’, it is a little odd that the lion does not appear until nearly halfway in, but from that point onwards, this is pretty great. Returning back to dialogue-free Polanski and Lampa might be the weirdest film of this unusual bunch – focused ostensibly on a toymaker and what happens to his kerosene lamp but with some amazing 'reaction shots' from a meter box (? – I think; see above) as it watches the chaos unfold.

Thanks for details JD,and I watched it tonight and found it wonderful! I've seen 3 of VC's films before, and I liked them, but felt they each ran out of steam by the hour mark, this was one which I found had a real lively flow which kept me gripped from beginning to end.

FTV:14: The Apple Game (1977). Czech. 8. (Surprisingly no IMDb review, despite Chytilova being a big name.)

Thanks to JD for bringing this to attention.

Bobbing for apples a year after a ban was lifted on her not directing again after international pressure from the film community and her writing a letter to President Gustav Husak over her support of socialism, co-writer/(with Kristina Vlachova) directing auteur Vera Chytilova makes a blazing return to cinema, busting open with Czech New Wave (CNW) ultra-stylisation in frenzied criss-crossing between human births and apples falling from the tree. Dipping the CNW into the French New Wave via shooting “on the spot” in real, dingy locations,Chytilova & cinematographer Frantisek Vlcek continue building on the unpredictable fluidity of Chytilova’s camera moves, spun from lightening fast pans around the maternity ward, to floating dolly shots bringing out an intimate atmosphere for Josef’s liaisons.

Less outwardly political than her past (and what would later be,future) work, the screenplay by Chytilova and Vlachova continues to build on Chytilova’s major theme across her work of expressing femininity, with a winning zest. Happily playing away between Anna and his wife like a little boy, the writers intelligently find the political underneath the skin, where Anna (played by an enticingly expressive Dagmar Blahova) tears off the fantasied nurse outfit which John (played by a perfectly meek, fellow CNW film maker Jiri Menzel) has become tied to,in order to peel away to her inner independence, maturely minded self, with Anna picking up the fruit of paradise.

With a main character named after Kafka's protagonist in The Trial, Joseph Kilian was a pretty great homage to Kafka as our hero gets lost in bureaucratic dead-ends while trying to search for the location of a shop where he rented a cat from and which has suddenly disappeared with everyone denying its very existence. Great imagery to match too (see above). Watched with terrible subtitles, I had trouble engaging with Oil Gobblers and even working out what is about. So we have a zoologist and his cameraman filming a documentary about some elusive creatures that drink oil? I got halfway in before curiosity got the better of me and a quick Google search made me realise that the film is actually a mockumentary. I suppose it is convincingly made for a fake doco and deserves credit for that, but I didn't really find it very entertaining, except in the scenes where we finally see the creatures. Erotyk was a bit too brief to really leave an impact, but the newspaper set design is awesome and the film has a nicely surrealistic feel to it.

FTV:15:Old Czech Legends (1953) 4

Image

Sowing together various Czech folk tales,co-writer/(with Alois Jirasek/Jiri Brdecka & Milos Vaclav Kratochvíl) director Jiri Trnka gives little in establishing the stories for viewers not familiar with their origins, where the extended narrations go more into detail over what is being shown on screen, rather than using narrations to bring clarity to the blended in tales. Backed by a biblical operatic score, the stop-motion animation style of Jiri Trnka walks close to style later used in Bible Tales cartoons shown in RE, in the large puppets moving with a rough, jerky stop/start motion in re-telling of these old Czech tales.

An accomplished film with some breathtaking visuals (outside of the nudity, that is) full of innovative camera angles (see above), atmospheric lighting and graceful camera swoops. The first sixteen minutes are especially remarkable, played out like a silent movie without a single word of dialogue spoken as actions alone convey Hedy Lamarr's disappointment and dissatisfaction on her wedding night. The potency of the tale dissipates in the final twenty or so minutes and a field workers montage at the end is pretty bizarre, if extremely well edited. The first hour here is very solid though.

I enjoyed reading your review Sol (I've been thinking of watching it,but being that IMDb list "German" as main language thought it might be excluded.)

An accomplished film with some breathtaking visuals (outside of the nudity, that is)
But the nudity is the breathtaking visuals Sol :D

I enjoyed reading your review Sol (I've been thinking of watching it,but being that IMDb list "German" as main language thought it might be excluded.)
I suppose I should have said "other than just the nudity" since that's what I was trying to get across, though I see how you misinterpreted what I wrote. And yeah, as a connoisseur of erotica and softcore films, you probably owe it to yourself to check out the barrier-shattering Ekstase. The language would not factor into its eligibility since it's on the official CZE list. Also, over 50% of the film is silent, and therefore very visual, which is pretty cool.

This curiously titled film refers to a single subplot involving a hypnotist who performs magic shows - and the project is ultimately more of a collection of subplots than a traditional narrative. The main story involves an out-of-town worker who has a romantic fling with his landlord's daughter, but as the film keeps cutting away to other locals in the town, the movie becomes both frustrating (with its lack of focus) as well as very dynamic with Dusan Makavejev's interest in showing the entirety of the town and refusal to adhere to conventional film form. Much of the camerawork is innovative too.

I'll take it slow 'cause we're not Russian this monthShow
1. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005, Romania)
2. The Loves of a Blonde (1965, Czechoslovakia)
3. Island of Death (1976, Greece)
4. Knife in the Water (1962, Poland)
5. Ashes and Diamonds (1958, Poland)
One of my weak spots in historical knowledge is post-ware Eastern Europe politics. So this was a nice film to watch and fill in a few of those gaps. I wish I knew more, though, because I think I missed out on some of the subtleties of the film.
