Il Cristo prohibito / The forbidden Christ / Strange deception (Italy 51)
I was drawn to this because it was written, directed and scored by Curzio Malaparte, whose work I dipped into in my wayward youth. Low production values but absolutely fascinating. Fave. (Fandor)

2. Last holiday (UK 50)

August Challenge: ImageImage
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

An unusual snowbound western. The film has some decent symbolism with the title cat never seen on screen and seeming to have mythical qualities, whilst the hunt provides a catalyst for the family to reflect on their existence. And yet, everything feels so much like a high stakes melodrama that it is hard to buy into the more emotional scenes. The cast certainly boasts talent, but most of the characters were too standoffish for me to warm towards.

While it would have been nice to find out more about the homeless folk and how they came to be that way, the documentary face of On the Bowery is its strongest suit with a particularly effective dialogue-free first four minutes in which we just see various shots of vagrants doing it tough. The narrative face is not half-bad, but it is noticeably scripted and the way everything is boiled down to the detriments of alcohol addiction seems like a gross simplification of what has led the downfall of the homeless folk. I loved the camaraderie between the various men doing it tough though.

Opening with brief narrated rundown of werewolf myths and a claim that such myths must exist for a reason, The Werewolf gets off to a superb start. Things only get more intriguing as we see the beast's first kill in a dark alleyway (see above), with Steven Ritch visibly hurting as the man inflicted with the transformation condition. The film unfortunately soon goes downhill and between the doomsday-predicting scientists and 'good guys' who lament medical advances like transplants as human folly, this is too alarmist a film to take seriously. The werewolf makeup, however, is certainly decent.

36. Rock All Night (1957)

Image

For a film that clocks in at ~60 minutes, Rock All Night is a poorly paced with a neat hostage subplot only cropping up in the final 20 minutes. There is real tension with this angle, but the first two thirds of the film feel like mindless filler as we are treated to what is basically a continuous string of song performances. It is eight minutes in before there is even a break in the singing; the songs are very decent, but The Petrified Forest the film is not.

And having hit the magic 36 number with only a few hours to spare before July on my side of the world, that's it for me. Thanks for hosting, 72a!

8. To Catch a Thief (Alfred HItchcock, 1955) (re-watch)
9. Shakedown (Joseph Pevney, 1950)
10. Kill Her Gently (Charles Saunders, 1957)
11. Shadow on the Wall (Pat Jackson, 1950)
12. Czlowiek na torze / Man on the Tracks (Andrzej Munk, 1957)

Late at night, a train hits a man on the tracks and kills him. It turns out that the man is an experienced, recently retired locomotive engineer, Orzechowski (Kazimierz Opalinski), and an investigation is opened up, resulting in a Rashomon-like narrative where several other employees at the rail yard are questioned, each giving somewhat different responses as to Orzechowski's character and the events leading up to the tragedy. While this isn't anything I, and most reading this, haven't seen before, and much in the story develops along expected lines, it's still an excellent film in significant part due to Opalinski's extraordinary performance as a proud, irascible, often unpleasant and arrogant old man, resentful of being put out to pasture for younger, less experienced men - but always holding onto a certain belief that the job is a responsibility and something more than himself. We start out seeing him as pretty much an asshole but the conviction in the performance and the skillful and nuanced writing of the character in the end give us a beautiful portrait of a troubled man who still has the capacity to astonish his coworkers, even in death.

13. The Girl in the Kremlin (Russell Birdwell, 1957)

This title is better, and gives you an idea of what you're in for:

Image

Basically the story - not really a spoiler cuz it's the first scenes - is that Stalin faked his own death, got heavy-duty plastic surgery, and is now living somewhere outside of the Soviet Union with a mountain of stolen cash - and it's up to American agent Lex Barker and Zsa Zsa Gabor, the twin of a Stalin assistant who has spent years trying to find her sister, to find the deposed leader, the money, etc, and I suppose prevent a war or international incident, though this isn't much commented on. This was a HORRRIBLE YouTube copy, both in picture and sound, so it's hard to say whether I got all there was to get, or indeed whether it's worth trying to get anything out of this silly bit of schlock. Mine is only the 2nd check and this counts for two challenges this month (it was banned in Israel for reasons that aren't clear - supposedly because it might damage that new country's relationship with the USSR? Why?) - but I guess this late in the month I'm not going to manage to push many into watching it. Not that I would, really; while there are some goofy elements here, like Stalin having a fetish for shaving women's heads, overall - especially given the poor quality - I would only recommend it to the most die-hard Cold War nonsense buffs.

14. Eroica (Andrzej Munk, 1958)

A two-parter, with a broadly comic take on the end, or near-end, of WWII and a man who's trying to scam and fake and hide his way through the war, followed by a much more serious and sober study of the inmates in a POW camp, and the legendary escape made by one of them that turns out to be a legend indeed. This is a solid piece of work overall, though at first I didn't feel that I got why these two very different stories are put together; apart from the temporal setting they don't have that much to do with each other; on further reflection a possibility emerges though that both are in a sense ironic reflections on the title - the "heroism" of service-dodger Gorkiewicz in the first part, and of the inmates in the second part, especially one who hides throughout, and one who goes out to his death seemingly deliberately; I suppose it's all an ironic counterpoint to our ordinary notions of what a heroic act is. Overall I probably liked the first story better; the copy I saw had somewhat unreliable subs I think, which at times made the comedy a little funnier in unintended ways.

Final count of Alastair Sim in this challenge: 10
Alastair Sim is always great. I went to a screening of Escapade about six years ago, which was the first movie I saw him in. One of the kid actors from the movie attended the screening and said Sim was very nice and a big favorite of all the kids in the movie.

13. Illegal, by Lewis Allen (1955) 7,5/10

Edward G. Robinson gives a great performance in this courtroom noir...

14. Des gens sans importance, by Henri Verneuil (1956) 9/10

A remarkable film by Verneuil. The direction is surprisingly good...

15. The Browning Version, by Anthony Asquith (1951) 7/10

A good film, even though one can feel it comes from a play...

16. China Gate, by Samuel Fuller (1957) 6.5/10

A few good moments, but a very slow start and a misplaced love story that slow the film and spoil a few sequences...

My first was of course A Christmas Carol. But I'm not rewatching that in the middle of summer. He just comes of as natural, particularly in An Inspector Calls. And with great comedic timing in the others.

Thanks ever so much for hosting the challenge, 72. I ran something of a hole through my TV planner recordings and succeeded in clearing up a lot of space for new recordings. Made plenty of wonderful discoveries as well as rewatching some titles I hadn't seen in 15-20 years. It was quite an English language-centred challenge for me but I still greatly enjoyed my month.

That's all, folks!

13. The Girl in the Kremlin (Russell Birdwell, 1957)
14. Eroica (Andrzej Munk, 1958)
15. Petla / The Noose (Wojciech Has, 1958)

Pretty simple and straightforward narrative from the guy who would later go on to make complex surrealist masterpieces like Sanatorium pod klepsydra, though there are hints of oddness sprinkled throughout in this tale of an alcoholic and his struggles over one day in which drinking, trying to not drink, love, regret and thoughts of suicide all intermingle. It's powerfully done, and has a beautiful noirish deep-focus visual style that presents the post-war city that protagonist Kuba lives in as something hard and unforgiving and full of people that he clearly sees as simultaneously lower and more moral than he is. For me it's underwhelmed slightly by a certain staginess in the acting and some of the scenes go on a bit long (particularly the very pathetic bar scene near the end), and there's nothing really "new" here, but it's still pretty compelling and visually excellent.

That's all for me, thanks 72!
