But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

12. The Tiger of Eschnapur (1959) Fritz Lang 6
I don't understand the critical acclaim for this and Moonfleet. Certainly beautiful shot but incredibly stilted and wooden acting detracts. Anyone offer a defense for his later adventure films or point me in the direction of favourable reviews?

An entertaining and elegant story of identity misappropriation. Stanwyck is excellent here, and Lyle Bettger is a fantastic bad guy.

2. The Sniper. (1952) Well done film gris. The movie is sometimes used in political polemics by people who believe it's ok to treat criminals without their consent. But the movie itself, although at times preachy, is much more nuanced than this. 5.9/10

3. Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956) - The weakest and bleakest Lang movie I've seen. The plot makes absolutely no sense, but that is not its main problem. Everything is just mediocre, at best, and Lang's style is missing. I've seen this right after Lang's Ministry of Fear, which is a very engaging and masterly crafted movie. Read on wikipedia that contemplated retirement during the time of this movie because it became harder for him to make the movies he wanted. This movies seems to be a result of these problems. After this, he went back to Germany to direct some more great movies, so he still had it in him. 4.5/10

4. Clash by Night (1952) - Is a much better movie than the previous one, but not near Lang's top level. A lot of comments claim this is not a *real* noir, from people who seem to confuse noir with pulp (noir). Noir does not necessarily need to portray a crime. It's a style that invokes emotions of being isolated, doomed and stuff like that. While there are some questionably entries in TSPDT 1000, movies that are mostly pulp not noir, Clash by Night is undoubtedly a true noir. 6/10.

Marius Goring (see above) is well cast here as a sly German officer who tries to manipulate his captors, yet neither Goring nor Dirk Bogarde's ostensible protagonist is really in focus as the film constantly cuts away to supporting characters and side events. All of the supporting characters converse in either Greek or German too, which adds authenticity, but as the Archers choose to not subtitle what they are saying, it becomes hard to get emotionally invested in the film (less than half of the dialogue is in English). An ambitious film, but one whose quizzical title is more fascinating than its story.

You know, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. AMAZING shots of Rome, and exactly what I wanted for someone who has never been there and wanted to see the tourist-y shots. Fun story that didn't age great, but did OK. Loved Gregory Peck in this.

25. Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) (1959): 6.2 - All the carnival and dance scene's sure do swing, making it a vibrant movie. But they serve very little function for the plot, thereby taking the pacing out of what is a very simple story. Beside while the movie has quasi-documentary/neorealist intentions by setting the story in a real setting, that setting is shown from a Western romanticized view. Which takes away from the intention of showing the real Rio de Janeiro.
26. Shadows (1959) (rewatch): 8.5 > 8.5 - We could discuss for a long time the impact it had on film history and how groundbreaking and original it was (or wasn't). But what is most important is the strenght of the movie in itself; the pure spontaneous energy and raw emotional power which make it such a sensation to watch, despite some flaws due to its low productions values.
27. The River (1951): 5.2 - Another movie that is seen as having aged not well due to romanticized colonial view of (this time) India. But this time that bothered me less, because it can be defended by that the whole movie is from the POV of romantic Western adolescent girl. What did bother me is that it is in the end just a very boring coming-of-age tale about first love with a extremely dull lead and uninteresting characters. The poor acting doesn't help either. It’s the kind of movie that needs a voice-over, because the actors can’t convey what they are thinking or feeling. It does have colorful shots
