20. 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957)
21. Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952)

22. I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)

Image

An updating of Mary Shelley's classic tale that feels very rushed with some silly coincidences and not enough time dedicated to the monster grappling with his ghastly appearance and identity. The film is boosted by a solid turn by Whit Bissell as the scientist though, raving like a madman at times and dropping callous insults into even the most casual conversations. His home alligator pit is pretty nifty too and the brief colour use here is great.

23. I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957)

Image

The title and out-there premise have some promise, but it takes an awfully long time before the protagonist here transforms. How the hypnotherapist believes that regressing to an animal-like state will help the youth is poorly explained too; same goes for how exactly it turns him into a werewolf. For all its vices though, the film has creepy makeup, the occasional cool upside down shot and an almost acute portrait of teenage angst.

Not your traditional vampire movie, this refreshingly different UK horror film concerns itself more with early blood research and the corrupt goings-on at an asylum for the criminally insane. The film has received a mixed reputation over time due to vampirism never being at the forefront despite the title; the doctor is also a pretty dull protagonist and his girlfriend who comes to his rescue is no more interesting, but Donald Wolfit is very entertaining though as the Dracula lookalike asylum operator and there is enough kookiness at his institute for the film to engage from start to finish.

25. King Solomon's Mines (1950)

Image

A Technicolor spectacle. Shot entirely on location with actual African tribesman, the film features some imagery that is still impressive today - a crocodile egg hatching right before the camera in particular. The story is a tad misogynistic with a large focus on Deborah Kerr not coping well in the wilderness and the predictable romance never works. The film is surprisingly respectful in its depiction of the tribesmen though, plus animal cruelty crops up as a key theme, but what really powers the film is the arguable futility of their trek. We do not see the mines until near the end though.

The subtext of this made the film, though it was subtle enough I'm glad I knew about it going in. Very nice Tennessee Williams play, though I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of his drama, though i can appreciate it. Powerful performances I really liked, but just didn't move me to that next level.

FTV:11:Manfish (1956) 6

Image

Whilst focusing a little too much on the scuba diving footage, director W. Lee Wilder & cinematographer Scotty Welbourne display a good level of ambition in getting the Manfish to sail above the low-budgets waters,in using wide-shots of the cast searching for lost treasure near waterfalls, and hoisting the adventure all together with a eerie final set in the deadly silent ocean. Looking for treasure round Jamaica, the writers keep a respectful tone for the locals, who enjoying hanging out/playing catching Calypso tunes, and are kept away from any link to the evil greed which drives the main trio. Taking Edgar Allan Poe’s The Gold Bug" and "The Tell-Tale Heart stories into Adventure mode, the screenplay by Myles Wilder and Joel Murcott make it work by scattering Poe’s unsettling Horror mood into the greed and mistrusts which grips Brannigan/Professor and The Swede. Joined by a lively John Bromfield and Lon Chaney Jr. as Brannigan and Swede, Victor Jory steals the gold as ,by keeping 'Professor',by keeping him dripping with sweat and wide-eyed to paranoia on the Manfish.

This western deliberately comes with limited exposition and it is only as facts are gradually revealed that we get a sense of just what sort of a men the main guy (Randolph Scott) and antagonist (John Carroll) really are. How each one deals with the stand-off speaks volumes about their individual integrity and the film intelligently questions both the ethics of revenge and validity of decisions made under emotional stress. A worthy 500<400 entry.

October Challenge: ImageImage
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

12. Paper Flowers (Kaagaz Ke Phool) (1959) Guru Dutt 7
Solid film but disappointing compared to the free form madness of Pyaasa.

20. A Face in the Crowd (1957): 8.5 - The character of Lonesome Dove exactly walks the tightrope between utterly charming, despicable and pathetic. Of course to use an overused but true cliché: this movie has never been more topical than during this American presidency.
21.The Vikings (1958): 6.2 - Historical adventure epic with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis as..... Vikings. It has some enjoyable action sequences but too much time is wasted on the backstory, which is also not well-done. The plot is unneccesary convoluted and despite all the time given to them the main characters stay one-dimensiosal Vikings. Mario Bava's copy of this is much better and entertaining.
22. The Defiant Ones (1958): 8.0 - It has some important and good social commentary, but as a movie it works because it doesn't forget that in its core it's a simple little prisoners escape movie.
23. Hachijikan no kyôfu [Eight Hours of Terror] (1957): 7.0 - A group of passengers due to circumstances have to take a bus instead of the train trough some rough roads and to make matter worse there is also a pair of criminals who hijack the bus. This is a movie early in the career of Seijun Suzuki and you get exactly what you can expect from that; a decently done studio genre flick. The characters in the bus clearly are meant as different representations of Japanese society at the times, with the sympathies laying with the marginalized and underdogs.
24. Les amants de Montparnasse [Montparnasse 19] (1958): 7.5 -Biopic about the last year of painter Modigliani. Guess I'm a sucker for this kind of overromanticising of the poor alcoholic suffering artist. It helps that is a visual stunning movie with good performances from the cast.
