Unofficial Doubling the Canon Challenge (2019-2020)
Copied and pasted (with some slight editing) from the iCM Favourite Movies Challenge by connordenney as the rules are very similar. Surely there's gotta be more users going through this list.
Goal:
Watch as many movies as you can from the Doubling the Canon list (2019 Edition).
Rules:
- Any single item on the list counts as an entry, no matter the length.
- Rewatches not allowed, though they are good for the soul.
Challenge runs until the next update in April/May 2020. Technically, you can include anything you have seen since May 6th, the day the list was updated on iCM.

Almost done with The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst and it's frankly boring. The twist probably isn't as effective in the last episode thanks to all the news articles spoiling it, but I guess I'll see.
Also a few episodes into The Prisoner. I hope it doesn't go downhill later on because so far this is as good as Twin Peaks.

unfortunately, it does kind of go downhill just a little bit, there's a couple episodes that seem like filler in the 2nd half but it's still one of the greatest shows ever.
and I was going to respond to your "Just because something is only one season long doesn't mean that it's a miniseries" comment in the other thread, but I'll do a twofer here, there's a ton of conflicting information out there, quite reflective of the themes of the show itself, and everyone interviewed about the show gives a different answer every time over the last 50 years, but it seems that McGoohan did actually want it to be a one-off series as a sort of political, counter-culture response to his previous series Danger Man (which ran forever, and was a generic dime-a-dozen '60s cold war spy show), and actually it was supposed to be...maybe 7 episodes? or 12, something like that, and the production company made him expand it so that it was more enticing to sell to other territories, like, in 1967 no one was going to buy a 7 episode series to air in another country (read: America), and spoilers they had to leave the door open for more episodes/seasons because shows back in the day ran forever. In fact some of that conflicting information says that the series was supposed to be even longer, in the 25-40 episode range, but was cancelled in the middle of its run, which doesn't really make sense as it finished filming months before it ever began airing in the US (and yeah despite it being a British production, it was the US distribution money that would've been the deciding factor).

It's on PTP and they don't allow tv shows there. However, it's not on letterboxd, so I think that means they don't consider it as a miniseries. It is quite confusing.

yeah. and ultimately the assignation "miniseries" as we've come to use it wasn't really a thing until Holocaust and Roots started the trend in the late '70s, so trying to define anything before that using only that specific terminology isn't really effective.
oh and regarding The Prisoner, did you know that there isn't a definitive viewing order for the episodes? have fun with that!

Either way I unfortunately won't add it to my list if I end up favouriting it. I have my list on letterboxd too and wanna keep them the same. However, if I will be convinced that it's a miniseries I won't give it a 0 when it gets revoted on DtC.

3rd place for this list now yay. If everything goes well I should be done this list in October, or maybe even sooner. Then maybe 2 more months for the holdovers. After that, I can complete the 500<400 list.

16. The Prisoner (1967) 10/10
It finally happened. The perfect TV show. It's so offbeat, surreal, fun, and very 60s. I can see some episodes being filler, but they were still so entertaining that I had a blast watching them. The last 2 episodes were the show's high point though. Apparently the lead actor went into hiding because of the reaction of the ending. There were some continuity issues like a car changing colour, actors changing in the far away shots, and some editing mistakes. However, the bigger picture of the show more than made up for it.
I would EASILY add this to my favourite films list if letterboxd had it on their database. Thank you for adding this to DtC. I wouldn't have even heard of this show without it.

Surprisingly no. I found a few experimental shorts lists on letterboxd, and 2 of them ended up being 10/10s:funkybusiness wrote: ↑May 14th, 2019, 12:33 am it's your first 10/10 in awhile, isn't it? and a television show, oh god.

If you're gonna see the latter, play the last track from Gas' Pop. They gel together so well.

18. O último mergulho [The Last Dive] (1992) 8/10
19. Wild River (1960) 5/10 I know I'm gonna get a lot of shit for this. I dunno exactly how to explain it, but it seems quite formal in how odd it is. Both the acting and the dialogue was odd, and it just turned me off.

A couple of months ago, I added "The White Meadows" to my Amazon Prime queue. I didn't know a thing about it, and I only added it because the premise sounded interesting and, well, it's foreign-language. Then it was added to the DTC list and actually became an official check. Saw it a few nights ago and really enjoyed it. An intriguing depiction of mystic rituals, mostly relating to grief and mourning. Minus: I suspect the washed-out Amazon version didn't look nearly as good as the DVD would.
I'm not really in this challenge, but I've seen this film, Love Must Love, Hajnal, Khlib, Sepio, LA Plays Itself and Passion since the DTC ballot came out. 372/1201. I think I had 367 or 369 before the list was updated.

Also a bit into Brideshead Revisited but I find it to be underwhelming for now. I've been told it picks up eventually though.
I'm also worried about one thing about The Prisoner after someone told me something. If The Prisoner is nominated, then there's probably gonna be tons of one season shows, and especially... animes that may be nominated in the future. I hope this isn't a bad sign of what's to come.

there have been anime and miniseries in the past and most don't make it in. Cosmos and The Singing Detective are the only ones I can think of that have made it, both non-anime. Serial Experiments Lain missed the cut this year and that's probably the most acclaimed and cult anime to be nominated.

The thing with Serial Experiments Lain is that it reached the point where people outside of anime fans have seen it. Those few people (myself included) ended up not liking it at all.funkybusiness wrote: ↑May 18th, 2019, 9:13 pm Serial Experiments Lain missed the cut this year and that's probably the most acclaimed and cult anime to be nominated.
The series I'm thinking about are the 20 or perhaps more episode shows that only anime fans have seen. I have a feeling plenty of those will make it next year.

I think I'll join in this year.
Started at 227/1201. If I'm ambitious maybe I'll hit a Tin for this before the next update (301, so 74 films to go). I'll also be prioritizing the revotes that I already have access to.
1. #687 Listen to Me Marlon (2015) - 7.6
2. #127 Je t'attendrai [The Deserter] (1939) - 7.8
Currently at 229/1201.

2. Graduate First (1978) 85 min.
2. Graduate First (1978) 85 min.
I'm not consciously working on this list, but since May 7, I've seen:
1. Love Must Love (1968)
2. Hajnal (1979)
3. Khlib (1929)
4. Sepio (1996)
5. LA Plays Itself (1972)
6. Passion (1990)
7. The White Meadows (2009)
8. Mujo (1970)
9. Harbor Drift (1929)
10. Black Roots (1970)
11. Nayak (1966)...loved this!
12. The Devil's Trap (1962)
13. Maudite Soit la Guerre (1914)
14. Deprisa, Deprisa (1981)
15. Drifting Clouds (1995)
(380/1201)
I watched several of these just because they were "new checks" with brief lengths, but Mujo, Nayak and Drifting Clouds already had been on my watchlist. And I was on the verge of adding The Devi's Net. To a lesser extent, I also was personally motivated to see The White Meadows and Deprisa, Deprisa, regardless of any ICM-competitive variables.
