Re: Official Western Challenge - May 2019

#401

Post by PUNQ » May 31st, 2019, 6:15 am

I have a feeling fori has the edge going into the final day. I'll do my best in the competitive portion of this challenge, but my wife talked about us having a date day today, so I might have to sacrifice the harmony of my marriage to win this thing. And I will too! Maybe...

137. The Kid (II) (2019, Vincent D'Onofrio) - 3/10
--- Billy the Kid might have been one of the most celebrated villains of the old west, so why is it so hard to make a good movie about him?! Not this dull mess...

138. In Old Sacramento (1946, Joseph Kane) - 6/10
--- Bill Elliott graduating from doing Red Ryder B-westerns at the Republic lot to more prestigious productions with stories of the west. I guess by Republic Pictures standards that these can be called A-westerns. Definitely have more detail and effort to them. I wouldn't say In Old Sacramento (1946) hits any climatic excitement, but it's a damn solid moral story and the film looks really nice compared to Elliott's minor westerns.

139. Death Valley (1946, Lew Landers) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Another mid-1940s color B-western in color (apparently that was becoming a thing from 1945 and on), except I saw the black & white version. Not too exciting, but it had a darker tone of greed than the usual streamlined westerns of the time, so that I appreciated.

140. Heroes of the Hills (1938, George Sherman) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The Mesquiteers fight for prison rights! The three cowboys meet a couple of escaped convicts telling their horror stories from the budget jail, and so the hunt for corrupt people begins. Decent idea, routine execution. Quite fun LeRoy Mason attempt some proper acting outside of his usual slimy persona.

141. Overland Riders (1946, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- As usual the Buster Crabbe westerns are very standard poverty row affairs, but at least he and "Fuzzy" Al St. John were likable in it. And sometimes that's enough for simple films like this.

142. Rainbow Over Texas (1946, Frank McDonald) - 4/10
--- Roy Rogers does It Happened One Night (1934). Partly. This also included his soon-to-be-wife Dale Evans dressing up as a boy and a pony express race for the climax. Decent fun.

143. Under Nevada Skies (1946, Frank McDonald) - 3/10
--- Amazing how much fun one can have with George 'Gabby' Hayes and a bunch of clocks. Too bad they didn't have much else going for them in this Roy Rogers western mystery.

This genre mashup benefits from an intriguing idea and the film begins well, focusing on how little conception the cowboys have of alien beings, futilely shooting at the flying saucers during the perfectly abrupt and unsettling initial invasion. Alas, as the film wears on, it gradually becomes more and more like a standard alien invasion movie; the aliens themselves are fairly generic too - very obviously modeled on Ridley Scott's xenomorphs.

I thought the music was effective here, varying from rousing to suspenseful, and I liked the mobile camerawork too. As a narrative though, it does not quite work. The shootouts are okay, but here are too many clumsily filmed fistfights in low lighting, limited character development (beyond flashbacks) and the whole thing feels melodramatic. A saloon song number reminiscent of the "I'm Tired" routine from Blazing Saddles (see above) is great though.

:shoot:

And that's it from me. Thanks for hosting, shugs! A very professional job for your first go at hosting. :poshclap:

Oh -- and while I didn't end up taking the opportunity to rack up extra points with rewatches of it, Old Town Road is easily one of my favourite music videos of the year so far. B)

Actually you know what, I've seen this one. Just didn't recognize it by that title (just knew it as O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro). But yea, it's definitely an interesting one. I wouldn't say quite Jodorowsky levels of insanity though.

For no reason at all I was wide awake at 5am this morning, and since my wife ended up sleeping long and deciding to have a lazy day too, I ended up having plenty of time to get a bunch of low budget westerns out of the way while the challenge lasted.

144. Song of Arizona (1946, Frank McDonald) - 3/10
--- Fun seeing a barely recognizable Lyle Talbot slumming in a Roy Rogers western, if only for a brief death scene. Westerns isn't exactly what I associate with that guy. Otherwise it was only a lesser experience with a nice little moral attached to it.

145. My Pal Trigger (1946, Frank McDonald & Yakima Canutt) - 4/10
--- Not the best of the tributes Trigger could have gotten, but fair enough. He got to aid his master Roy Rogers and also win a race in a average B-western of the type Republic Pictures used to put out.

146. Roll on Texas Moon (1946, William Witney) - 4/10
--- George 'Gabby' Hayes the sheep lover! And it's a cute little lam too. The relationship they had was so adorable! The rest was the usual stuff which got completely out-shadowed by that special bond between Gabby and the sheep.

147. Home in Oklahoma (1946, William Witney) - 3/10
--- One of Roy Rogers less interesting films. I guess some of it was alright, especially the stuff between him and his leading lady, but overall not as charming as it usually is.

148. Out California Way (1946, Lesley Selander) - 3/10
--- Republic Pictures trying to give one of their colorless lead men some color with Trucolor. What the hell is Trucolor?! Didn't do Monte Hale any favors. This was still a rather uninspired story with a even less inspired performance from him. Not even cameos from some of Republic's popular stars, like Roy Rogers, Allan Lane & Don 'Red' Barry, helped save this from boredom.

149. Heldorado (1946, William Witney) - 3/10
--- Roy Rogers ending 1946 with a filler western. George 'Gabby' Hayes & Dale Evans provide the usual diversions, but not enough to heighten the experience above the streamline production of these B-westerns.

150a. Gun to Gun (1944, D. Ross Lederman) - 17min
150b. Star in the Night (1945, Don Siegel) - 21min
150c. Hi-Five the Cactus (2018, Christopher Allan Thomas) - 9min - FIRST CHECK!
150d. First Samurai in New York (2018, Justin Ambrosino) - 13min - FIRST CHECK!

151a. Cliffside (2018, Liam Vickers) - 12min - FIRST CHECK!
151b. Horse Money's Crisis at the Corral! (2018, Josh Pulido) - 25min - FIRST CHECK!
151c. Petting Scorpions (2017, The Young Astronauts) - 15min - FIRST CHECK!
151d. Down There by the Train (2017, Andrew McNeill & Thomas Pollock) - 8min - FIRST CHECK!

152a. Riding Through Life with Love by My Side (2018, Gary Winstead) - 12min - FIRST CHECK!
152b. The Good Time Girls (2017, Courtney Hoffman) - 15min
152c. Orient City: Ronin & The Princess (2017, Ryan Colucci & Zsombor Huszka) - 12min - FIRST CHECK!
152d. Westworld to Yuma (2017, Ryan Connolly) - 5min
152e. Unbridled Mischief: A Lego Brick Film (2017, Spencer Berglund) - 5min - FIRST CHECK!
152f. Manila Death Squad (2017, Dean Colin Marcial) - 12min

153. Roaring Rangers (1946, Ray Nazarro) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- With Charles Starrett getting Smiley Burnette, the Durango Kid disappears completely in the background, as Smiley has a ton more personality than Starrett. You barely notices that it's a Durango western anymore as Burnette takes over the show with his songs and goofball antics! Not that there was that much going on to compete with. Tame script.

154. Gunning for Vengeance (1946, Ray Nazarro) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Smiley Burnette being there sure gives the Durango Kid westerns with Charles Starrett some personality, but I'm not sure their collaboration gives this the right dynamic. It's not like Smiley and Gene Autry, which felt natural. This one feels forced and there is nothing to play off of. And the plot suffers greatly from that. Especially since it's a lackluster story.

155. Galloping Thunder (1946, Ray Nazarro) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- This Durango Kid picture worked a little better. Trying their best to make the Charles Starrett & Smiley Burnette partnership work, but in reality Smiley sinks the hero in presence and relevance for low budget pictures like this.

156. Two-Fisted Stranger (1946, Ray Nazarro) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- For the 4th entry teaming together, the duo of Charles Starrett/Smiley Burnette is starting to grow on me. They just put Smiley in silly scenarios, here exploring a diamond mine with a gold digger by his side, while the Durango Kid goes exploring crooks. These are probable still among the cheapest looking westerns being put out at this point as a lot of the poverty row franchises died out during the war, along with a lot of the leftover cowboy heroes of the past not getting any more chances after flooding the market med trios-westerns as the last ditch effort to stay relevant. Starrett doesn't being anything new to the B-western genre, but at least keeps Smiley employed.

157. The Desert Horseman (1946, Ray Nazarro) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Smiley Burnette as the wost cook in the west. And he's even worse as a gunslinger! That part made me happy. And that'll be all you need to know about this cheap western.

That concludes my effort for this years Western Challenge. Hopefully it'll earn back my Sheriff badge after last years downfall, and maybe get me a hattrick - 3 months in a row winning a challenge. But that'll probable be all for me for a little while. It's not often so many challenges fit my viewing agenda, and to be honest the rest of the year, except for August, looks kind of cold for what I'm planning to see. At least as far as being a contender goes. But I might put in a few here and there if something fits the bill.

Anyway, thanks for the effort in this challenge everyone, it was almost fun.... if only I'd been in a better period for westerns. Mid-1940... not very recommended. One... ONE.... movie I loved of the 157 entries. That was John Wayne's Tall in the Saddle (1944) with a whopping 7 out of 10 rating!

Thanks for hosting, shugs. I enjoyed this challenge immensely. Several great discoveries and many very fine films, as well as quite a few very rewarding rewatches. The month went by very swiftly indeed!

Congrats appear to be in order to PUNQ. He and fori set a cracking pace that I couldn't quite go with. I had a fine time trying, though!

11. O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro / Antonio das Mortes (Glauber Rocha, 1969)
12. The Sun Shines Bright (John Ford, 1953)

Jonathan Rosenbaum has an excellent, very long review of this Doddering Relic of a Lost Cause and you can read that for plot details, and also some insight into why JR and some others see this as a great film. For myself it took some convincing on a first viewing - at first Stepin Fetchit grated too much, though to be fair he's actually less problematic here than in anything else I've seen with him - and the courtroom scene that ends in "Dixie" was amusing but also troubling - but as the film goes on, it's clear that what Ford is aiming at here is sort of a utopian vision of what racial healing and redemption of sin could have been in the 1905 Kentucky where this "southern" takes place, and maybe could be in the future. While you cannot get away from paternalism and stereotyping and these are hard to deal with throughout, the narrative linking of tales involving two black sheep - one a young man, the other a prostitute - who return to this town for the cleansing of their souls and pasts in some way, and the averting of a lynching, and the two parades, one a funeral and the other a political celebration, that close out the film all add up to something much more than a silly little story with southern belles and deferential sharecroppers under the wise guidance of a drunk ex-Confederate Judge. Something sublime. Maybe not Ford's best film, but as a vision of a somewhat better Ameriica than we've generally had, and a mixture of the best and worst of Hollywood in the 50s, it's hard to beat. Best film of the challenge for me.

And that's all for me this month, thanks for hosting shugs.

Two shorts that don't get my any more points, but that I did watch earlier this month:

Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine (2005, 17m)
El Terror de la Frontera (1929, 5m)

The first was confusing and the second was nice to see something from so long ago and so far away.

This also won't net me any points but I played through the comedy western RPG West of Loathing. Pretty amusing game, especially the spittoon dredging.

In the video game arena I played some Red Dead Redemption 2 this month. I certainly haven't finished the game yet, though!

Thanks for hosting the challenge!

And that's it for me. I could have gone on watching westerns last night but I've been reading the new Eric Idle autobiography so I opted for some Monty Python instead. I enjoyed this challenge a lot and was especially entertained by the excellent stats!

46. Deadwood: The Movie (2019)

I'm happy to end this challenge with the long-awaited Deadwood finale. I have complicated feelings about it, but overall I very much enjoyed the experience. I think that's chiefly for the same reasons I enjoyed the original series: interesting characters, wonderful production design, and a script that unfolds with deliciously labyrinthine elocution and speech patterns. It is a pleasure to hear the residents of Deadwood speak.

But let me return to the subject of characters, for it is there that I think Deadwood (the movie) falls short. And I'll also go to spoilers -- (there's also a spoiler below, oddly enough, for the 1980 mega-flop Heaven's Gate, so you might not want to read if you haven't seen that movie)
SpoilerShow
I think the makers of the movie got trapped by the desire to provide what is commonly known as fan service. As such, they shoehorned in almost all of the characters from the original series who were (a) living at the end of season 3 and (b) played by actors that have not died since 2006. Even some actors whose characters were killed in the series showed up in cameo roles (Garrett Dillahunt, who played two different roles in the series, plays a drunk in a mob scene). As a result, attention is divided far too much, leading to perfunctory and unsatisfactory subplots. For example, the Alma-Seth and the Jane-Joanie subplots. We are provided no reason these characters return to Deadwood. And once they do, they give us a few scenes of tension with their former paramours that lead either to continued separation (Alma-Seth) or reconciliation (Jane-Joanie). I have to admit I liked a few of the character returns. Con Stapleton's random appearance in one scene was a lark--one of the town's rogues has apparently now become the town minister--but many of the more dramatically important characters were given little to do.

That being said, I have to admit that the Seth-Alma and Jane-Joanie subplots have their thematic intent, unsatisfactory though they were in isolation. To me, there are two great themes in this movie: (1) the uses and abuses of the law, especially as a matter of individual conscience and (2) the coming together of a community. These themes are NOT A BIG FUCKING SURPRISE. Those were themes of the original show, and to a great extent the movie feels like a recapitulation of season 3, with the murder of Charlie Utter standing in for the murder of Ellsworth. With regard to the theme of community, I was a bit startled by the movie's optimism. The wedding scene at the end reminded me a lot of some of the celebration scenes in Heaven's Gate. Both seem to suggest that well-intentioned people can build something beautiful and fulfilling in the wilderness, thus escaping their past problems. In Heaven's Gate, that optimism is misplaced. The movie's title is ironic because 1890 Montana proves to be no heaven at all. The irony here is that the optimism is warranted, even though Deadwood was one of the most resolutely pessimistic series ever ... well, maybe it's warranted. The movie concludes happily if tearily, with Hearst jailed, Al dying but reconciled to the people he cares about, a newborn babe, a newly married couple, a reaffirmed Bullock marriage, and even some solace for Johnny Burns. But ...

Let's talk about the theme of law. Bullock gets one of the movie's standout lines when he says, "My job ain't to follow the law. My job is to interpret it and then enforce it accordingly." Bullock's divided nature was one of the through lines in the original series. He was a righteous lawman guided by a strong moral bent, who also cheated on his wife, had a very serious anger management problem, ignored multiple crimes when it suited him, and on multiple occasions beat people's faces to a pulp. He was a bully who thought himself a good man. And when he called Hearst a bully in the final episode, it was a moment of startling hypocrisy. Bullock's moment of truth in this movie comes during the mob scene. He has confronted Hearst twice already, killed his bodyguards, and now arrested him. He has done this knowing that it will not end his troubles. The mob presents a moment of salvation. If the mob kills Hearts, Bullock might just get his revenge on Hearst, prevent Hearst from further depredations (especially the threat to Trixie), and escape consequence because blame will fall on the mob. And instead he decides to rescue Hearst, providing a throwback to the first scene of the whole series. Strategically, it's a disastrous decision, and if Al saw it I think he would be furious.

And that brings me back to the seemingly happy ending. The constant refrain of the series' third season was that the people of Deadwood could not act against Hearst. The assumption was that he was so powerful and moneyed that even if they killed him, then his heirs/associates/executors would arrive quickly with enormous power and fury and destroy everyone. This assumption is what led to Al spending the entire third season moping around. At the end of the movie, with Hearst in jail, the buoyant mood of the town feels dangerous and hollow. Hearst will beat the rap for killing Utter. And he will exact vengeance. The town of Deadwood feels stuck upon a precipice. Has the world ever danced so frivolously atop a volcano?

I saw and loved the series about 10 year ago. Is the movie watchable without having recently seen the series and knowing all the detail of the story? (I will read or watch a recap of the series to refresh my memory about the basic plots lines.)
