Arthur Tauchert is well cast as the titular larrikin here and Lottie Lyell is okay as his love interest, but this is not a particularly good movie despite being a pioneer Australian silent. Part of the problem is an overreliance on lengthy title cards that are written in slang with deliberate misspellings to indicate pronunciation (see above) - something that makes them cumbersome to read. Then there is the fact the title cards are a confusing mix of first person narration and actual dialogue. It is certainly fascinating to see what Sydney looked like a hundred years ago though.

Just read the synopsis, and I'm game. No need to send a link, I found it. I was afraid to recommend it, as I wasn't too sure you'd enjoy it, but, now, I think you may, so for the "bonus game" I'll give you "That Eye, the Sky." :) You'd be the 2nd check for this one as well.

Somersault (2004)

iCM: 468 checks
iMDb: 6.8/10

The winner of a record 13 AFI Awards and directed by Cate Shortland, the lady who will be at the helm of the upcoming Marvel movie Black Widow, Somersault is another great Australian Coming of age movie. The movie is led by Abbie Cornish, a teen who runs away from home and finds herself in the Australian snowfields where she meets the character played by Sam Worthington, a farmers son unable to express himself and unsure of his own sexual identity.

18. My Brilliant Career (1979, Australia) - 5/10
My second movie for the Bonus Challenge was given to me by orarama and was an Australian classic costume drama/romance that I thought might do really well with me. Unfortunately while the film seemed to live up to its name I struggled to get into it fully and I never was able to get much enjoyment from it. A score of 5 means peeptoad remains the leader and orarama sits in behind her in second with 5 movies (at the moment) left to watch.

4. All This Mayhem (2014) Australia

The pair's fall from grace here is certainly quite interesting - as is an ongoing rivalry that develops between themselves and the legendary Tony Hawk - but both of these aspects are unfortunately left until the second half of the documentary. The result of this is a film that gets more intriguing as it goes along, but one which I found really hard to get emotionally invested in at first. I suppose it doesn't help that I have little or no interest in skateboarding. Whatever the case, this unfortunately didn't really work for me.

5. The Loved Ones (2009) Australia / 1 Official List

Image

Despite a slow start there is seldom a dull moment once things warm up here with several brutal, graphic and gory scenes. The tension is heightened as the horror is contrasted to the idyllic actual prom in on/off cutaways. The film also introduces another plot thread though (goth girl and nerd) that ultimately ends up going nowhere, barely intersecting with the main story thread. The main story is great though: a highly creative spin on the ramifications of a girl spoiled by a father harboring an unhealthy obsession with his child.

This movie is cinematic perfection. Based on the heartwarming true story of Maremma sheepdogs who protect small penguins on an island sanctuary from creatures trying to eat them. It's fun and sweet and happy. And the best thing about it? THAT'S MY DOG!!!!!!! My baby girl (Sweet Dee) is part Maremma and part Great Pyrenees (which are the Italian and French versions of the same breed). She's so cute and adorable. And every single second of that film with the dog in it reminded me of mine - similar looks, similar mannerisms, etc.

Fun coincidence: Oddball is a bit of a shit in this movie (hence the name). Paused the movie to let my dog in, only to discover she learned a new trick (yes, snapped this pic while the film was paused):

The Man from Snowy River (1982)

iCM: 617 checks
iMDb: 7.3/10

Based upon the 1890 poem by one of Australia's most celebrated poets Banjo Patterson and directed by George T. Miller (not the Mad Max director but another Australian with the same name) this movie shows the beauty that is Australia's countryside. With American cinema legend Kirk Douglas playing dual roles this movie is a must for those wanting a true taste of what Australia is all about.

Some very impressive visuals in this Pacific Islands Romeo and Juliet story. I didn't know this was an ambition of mine, but after seeing this movie I'd like at least once to make love atop an erupting volcano. #LifeGoals

A decent Australian drama, I guess, but really not my cup of tea. There are certainly some great images (see above) and nice outback vistas, but these are elements that would probably appeal more to non-Australian moviegoers; I can see similar outback imagery less than an hour's drive away. As for the story itself, there are some acute racial relations stuff, but nothing that I haven't seen handled elsewhere before and I didn't really care for any of the characters. The part where they watch the Ned Kelly silent feature was pretty fun though as a film fan.

Yeah Housos vs. Authority came out before this joining of the two shows but it is my least liked of the bunch. I do recommend checking out his more recent Dumb Criminals: The Movie, that one isn't bad.

1. Walkabout (OZ 71) - rewatch

I think this was the first Australian movie I ever saw - in a theater. (when home video came along I watched all the Aussie movies I could find.) Watching it again - tho I remembered quite a bit, it struck me again how much my understanding of film as a medium has grown in the interim.

6. Long Weekend (Australia)

I'd like to think the pitch for this movie was, "A weekend at the beach with a squabbling couple and some marine mammal howls."

Imagine a mash-up of The Birds and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, only drained of any quality whatsoever. This is a crap movie that establishes its MO very early: every minute or so there will be a weird animal noise. Also, the camera will frequently frame the leading couple from behind some bushes, as if they're being spied on. That's the strategy for 90 minutes of non-suspense.

The one redeeming feature of this movie is that
SpoilerShow
I never thought "zombie dugong" were two words I would see together. Frankly, I'm a bit charmed by the concept. From now on, for any Australian movie or horror movie I don't like, I will condemn it with the following criticism, "It could have used a zombie dugong."

06. Dinosaur Island (2014)
I watched that during the last Aus/NZ/... challenge. Facepalming is about right. I have it at a 3/10...

I didn't mind the movie, probably though it was because I watched it with the kids so I was a bit more accepting of it.

What if Albert Einstein grew up in regional Tasmania? This comedy attempts to answer this question as it depicts the famed scientist as a country bumpkin who accidentally discovered relativity and other scientific principles on a trip to mainland Australia. There are lots of silly explosions and over-the-top physical humour that easily get on the nerves. The second half is an improvement though, with the craziness of a mad scientist mental ward and a suspenseful race against time, but this still uneven at best, and would have worked better with a fictional protagonist a la Forrest Gump.

Hey everyone, just letting you all know that my home internet is playing up. As soon as I get it fixed I will be back to the regular updates. Until then I guess I will just keep watching movies. Hope you all are enjoying what you are watching.

Live action and animation are seamlessly blended in this adaptation of Beatrix Potter's quaint tales. The quality of the animation is a big plus as the rabbits have very expressive faces and while James Cordern verges on obnoxious as Peter, Domhnall Gleeson gives it his all in an energetic performance as his live action counterpart. There is also some lovely water colour traditional animation during a flashback scene. The general messages here regarding honesty and taking responsibility may not exactly be anything new, but I found this funny more often than expected and seldom cloying.

Do you have NBN yet? My area hasn't been connected yet and I only keep hearing the worst of stories about NBN service.

Yeah I have NBN but I'm not through a major provider. I haven't got much good to say about it so far but it's net and it works the majority of the time so it will do for now. I think my main issue is actually wiring in the house itself.

Not really competing in this challenge, but it's as good a time as any to watch the regional movies that I have on PVR etc. and might as well track my viewing here ...
