This was given to me by flavo5000 for the bonus challenge. This was a nice slow burn horror that really kicked into gear late in the piece yet I never found myself getting bored. In both my Australian Ranked list and on my Flickchart (barely) this beat out Priscilla so flavo5000 takes the lead in this bonus challenge giving him the lead in the first two as well as the overall challenge lead.

Not quite sure what to make of this one yet. On one hand, this is an intense and excitingly filmed account of a terrorist attack. On the other hand, this Australian film is about a terrorist attack in India and the focus is almost entirely on the rich tourists, save for one staff member played by Dev Patel. I didn't really like the way the film seemed to be all about promoting the bravery of the tourists, and the whole baby-in-jeopardy stuff was a little too obvious a plot device to grab me. Some bits also reminded me of Die Hard with the over-the-top heroics. I really dug Jason Isaacs as a Russian though.

I saw Hotel Mumbai just before this challenge started. Jason Isaacs was probably the best thing about the movie for me, too. Some of the tourists were brave, but quite a few of them were stupid, too. It certainly presented the police as heroic, presumably poorly paid people risking their lives to save the rich tourists, and the staff were likewise selfless. You don't need a detailed back story to realize that anyone's life is precious to them, and we can always use a reminder that the life of an Indian waiter is as valuable as the life of a Russian oligarch, at least to those who care for him.In the end, I felt like I had just watched a very effective piece of Indian propaganda, but I didn't have a problem with that. It doesn't seem like 10 years since this happened, but on the other hand the only targets I remembered were the train station and the Taj Hotel.

Yeah, I got a sense of that too - especially Armie Hammer's near suicidal quest to get upstairs and reunite with his baby. I would have preferred Hammer to be a supporting character rather than one of the main ones here. In fact, I think I would liked the overall film more as an ensemble piece, not really focusing on anyone more than anyone else (and I agree about the police). I didn't mind the film too much, but the focus felt a little off.

Ozploitation at its finest (at least in my eyes anyway), Felicity is the Australian version of Emanuelle (and is even referenced in the movie).

Sol gave me this modern silent film for the bonus challenge and I was quite intrigued. Stylistically the movie seemed sound but the story itself let it down greatly. Unfortunately this movie finds itself at the bottom of the heap so far.

49. Long Weekend (2008, Australia) - 5/10 - Yes I made the silly mistake of watching the crappy(?) remake before the original.
50. Opal Dream (2006, Australia) - 7/10
51. BMX Bandits (1983, Australia) - 7/10
52. Smithy (1946, Australia) - 9/10 (double)

Well, thanks for watching it. And don't worry; judging by everyone else's reactions you're not alone. Of course, I absolutely loved the story with the way the plot crossed over into modern times and so on, but quite clearly it is not a film for all tastes most tastes. I'm obviously a really poor judge when it comes to working out which films of mine will appeal to others. A well-trained dog and innovative sets will only get you so far...

An Australian take on the backwoods brutality genre. Written by Everett De Roche, the film initially seems built on a similar premise to Long Weekend with the couple bringing much of their misery on themselves by bringing dirt through the farmhouse, knocking things over, leaving the lights on and in general just not caring about their surroundings. As the owners grow increasingly vicious and nasty though, this reading does not quite stack up and the brutal middle of the film disappoints. The final third is fairly nifty though with some sadistic scenes played out in grisly detail.

Norman Kaye is excellent as the very calm, soft-spoken and mild-mannered lead here and he has some interesting conversations with his philosophical postman. As a narrative though, the film mostly consists of narrated letters interspersed with slow motion close-ups - something that grows repetitive very quickly. Some tension is injected in the final 25 minutes as Kaye comes into conflict with the boyfriend of a woman who he pays to undress and some of the shots (especially the end) could easily be mistaken for a painting, but this didn't really float my boat overall.

This Australian comedy-horror blend starts off a lot like Tucker and Dale vs Evil. This is a more twisted film than that though with the plot quickly veering in some unexpected directions best left unspoiled. Suffice it to say, this is pretty entertaining between the morbid humour, excellent gore effects and a sinister Angus Sampson as the trucker's brother. Amidst all this there are sadly no real likeable characters and some of them make some particularly odd bad decisions, but everything culminates in a perfectly grisly climax though and both the final few shots are pitch perfect.

The title here is a bit misleading since the entire movie involves the captive female protagonist trying to escape, but there are admittedly a few moments in which we wonder if she is starting to bond with her captor. Tension is in fact the area in which the film best succeeds. Some of the missed opportunities that she fails to take to escape are odd, but director Cate Shortland always keeps us on the edge, wondering what our protagonist will try next. The film has, however, a woefully undeveloped antagonist and was a little slow-moving for my taste.

I can only imagine how the conversation would go if you explained "no, I'm not really into this stuff; I'm just watching it for the checks and points". tehe Thanks for reminding me about Deathgasm; I have it unwatched on DVD in my collection and this month is certainly the month to give it a whirl...

This documentary benefits from an interesting subject and excellent shots of the desert wilderness with some really unexpected sights, like cattle bones stuck in trees as a result of flooding. There are several innovative low camera angles on the mail truck as it pushes along and the film very much captures how mail is "the only link with the outside world" for those who dwell in Australia's most remote regions. The film is rather unfocused though and while certain tangents are not uninteresting, they subtract from what is otherwise a very potent look at the difficulties of delivering the mail.

I started watching it last night on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and it's pretty damned ridiculous and entertaining. Also Joe Bob is still in fine form.

Good to know. I have it as my next AU/NZ film lined up to watch, but I also have some 1940s comedies lined up to watch, plus I'm trying to finish this long and drawn out three-hour DTC nominated film. So many movies, so little time.

Shot on location across the beautiful Western Australian coast :D this black comedy ironically looks gorgeous for a film about characters up to some very bad and devious things. The film is a bit hard to get into at first since it is deliberately told out of order and character introductions are intentionally shied over, but this stylistic decision makes the film endlessly intriguing to watch when the pieces slowly start to fit together. Simon Pegg gives it his all too as a snickering foreign hitman and has several memorable moments.

29. Eagle vs Shark (2007) New Zealand

Image

A quirky New Zealand comedy from the director What We Do in the Shadows. Both Loren Taylor and Jemaine Clement deliver well in the lead roles, but this is Taylor's film every step of the way as she gradually becomes more confident and assertive while still remaining true to her character's social awkwardness. Add in some hilarious lines (especially regarding Clement's candles) and lots of cool Jan Svankmajer style stop animation and this is an appealing look at two fully grown adults learning only slowly how to not act like children.

9. Bad Boy Bubby (Australia)
The first 30 minutes are nauseating, but then it becomes an unexpectedly successful black comedy. Sort of a mash up of Kaspar Hauser and Being There. Also, before I saw this movie I knew very little about Adelaide. After seeing it, I still know very little about Adelaide, except I'm pretty sure I never want to go there.

10. Sweet Country (Australia)
I talked myself into seeing this, bypassing a lack of enthusiasm caused by a 6.9 imdb rating and 4.4% fav/check ratio on icm. I'm glad I did. A very well made historical movie and very authentic. Recommended. I don't know if this qualifies for the indigenous narrative challenge (maybe Monty could weigh in?)

That's the 5th country. I have found other movies, but they are generally just shot in the area, not produced by them.
