A Peaceful DecadeShow
1. 40,000 Horsemen (Charles Chauvel, 1940)
2. The Gang's All Here (Busby Berkely, 1943)

4. Panique (Julien Duvivier, 1946)
5. La nuit fantastique / Fantastic Night (Marcel L'Herbier, 1942)
6. Easter Parade (Charles Walters, 1948) (re-watch)

TCM. Checked this in 2010 though I think I had seen it once in childhood or early adulthood. This improved a little on this viewing; while the story remains extremely cliched, predictable and uninteresting, and the direction merely solid-to-good (had original director Vincente Minnelli stayed with it, I suspect this wouldn't have been the case), everything else is cake. I'm not sure Judy Garland ever sounded better overall - at 25 her voice had matured enough to sound strong and lustrous in all the songs she gets, and her interpretive intelligence had certainly reached a new peak - the brief torchy "Better Luck Next Time" might be the best example - Astaire's dancing is certainly up to snuff, Anne Miller and Peter Lawford are fine second bananas, and the color and production are MGM Grade A Standard solid. I don't really think any of the the songs are among the best ever, but none are weak either - it's one very good number after another served up with real emotional depth by Garland and flair from Astaire.

While the less skit-based plot here (compared to Saps at Sea etc.) is welcome, it is also a bit of a distraction with too much left undeveloped, such as what has lead to Stan and Ollie's employer being lied to about his health for so long. Dick Nelson is also very bland as the young man in question and he has too many alone scenes minus Laurel and Hardy. When the duo are in focus though the film rarely missteps, from elaborate gags (a bird stuck in Ollie's pants; see above), to quieter ones like Stan putting a light globe in his mouth or resting on a moving plank, there are several funny moments.

Had a quiet Easter movie-wise, but here's an update. Let's see if I can pick things up for the final week.

Image

61. Phantom Lady (1944, Robert Siodmak) - 6/10
--- Felt like a mini-thriller. Never complete, but with a lot of great ideas. Robert Siodmak brings a bit of retro from his earlier influences of German Expressionism, by 1944 what was turning into film-noir, which was really something old in new wrapping. Used a little uneven here, but a darker style was clearly is hitting Hollywood at this point. Phantom Lady (1944) is a cool picture, a template of what to come.

Image

62. Mr. Skeffington (1944, Vincent Sherman) - 8/10
--- Took a while before I was sucked in, but when I was, I found it wonderfully absurd! Mr. Skeffington (1944) really took off when her adult daughter came back and Bette Davis became a total metal case from that point. A character totally detached from reality in such a abstract manner. The focus on her wrinkles and fallen hair created the desperate nature of this obsessed creature and the ending was one of those blissful ironies which was the perfect way to end this aging-horror story. I continue to love Bette Davis movies!

Image

63. Ministry of Fear (1944, Fritz Lang) - 7/10
--- Fritz Lang directs a thrilling film. Some slow spots and the climax wasn't handled as well as the build-up, but that doesn't stop Ministry of Fear (1944) from becoming a exciting Nazi spy hunt with cakes and bombs!

Image

64. Kashchey bessmertnyy [Kashchei the Immortal] (1945, Aleksandr Rou) - 5/10
--- One of those quirky Soviet-era fantasy movies. I've seen them done more adventurous, but it's still pretty unique and grotesque.

Image

65. Music for Millions (1944, Henry Koster) - 7/10
--- So so so adorable! They could have cut down the whole telegram thing by a lot, but everything involving 7-year-old Margaret O'Brien was done to perfection. A real feel good picture!

Image

66. The Uninvited (1944, Lewis Allen) - 7/10
--- The Uninvited (1944) managed to make a ghosts story serious. Not some spoof or thing done for camp entertainment. Instead it focuses on putting together the backstory of what once happened and why the ghosts haunts the young lady. The effects were nicely done too. Not too scary, but always a specific atmosphere which sort of sucked you into the mystery of it all. Surprised at how well this worked.

Image

67. This Happy Breed (1944, David Lean) - 6/10
--- A pleasant story of a British family during the tween-war years. Hardly anything revolutionary, but the writings of Noël Coward, David Lean, Ronald Neame & Anthony Havelock-Allan digs up enough drama and reflections to make it feel like a rewarding viewing. Stylized with Technicolor adds to it's prestige.

Image

68. The Lady and the Monster (1944, George Sherman) - 5/10
--- First time in years I've seen Richard Arlen being used in a good way. Possessed by Donovan's brain, yes this is the original to the more famous Donovan's Brain (1953), Arlen shows this broken intense expression which make the horror a reality. The film is still on a low budget and the highlights are far and few between, but key moments make it a surprisingly good thriller.

Image

69. The Mask of Diijon (1946, Lew Landers) - 4/10
--- Erich von Stroheim was an enigmatic figure in Hollywood, but he rarely had the personality to carry a sound film by himself. Especially not when working for what was left of poverty row. With that said, The Mask of Diijon (1946) is a surprisingly effective little film. They definitely tried to make the most of the limitations they had. Mildly haunting.

Image

70. Laura (1944, Otto Preminger) - 8/10
--- Lovely little murder mystery. Focused to so few characters and basically Gene Tierney as bait. Mainly for the viewer. A truly captivating and natural performance from the beauty. She really was Laura (1944).

Image

71. Bathing Beauty (1944, George Sidney) - 7/10
--- The original Esther Williams. Filled with color, fun and splashes. Not to mention a whole bunch of characters to almost out-shadow her in her first swimming picture. But what a blast! Simply a good time, like musicals of old. Not so much about the plot, but all about showcasing!

Image

72. Hets [Torment] (1944, Alf Sjöberg) - 7/10
--- Enter Ingmar Bergman. Not as a director, but as the writer of this psychological drama of torment and despair. Though he did learn the ropes with this production. And it's amazing how much deeper this film in compared to the usual Swedish output of this period. All of a sudden movies seemed to have a purpose beyond the usual matinée feel of Scandinavian cinema. Multi-dimensional, provocative and rather unpredictable.

Image

73. Gaslight (1944, George Cukor) - 9/10
--- As much as I love Gaslight (1940), the almost identical American version four years later is my favorite adaptation. All due to Charles Boyer's magnificently manipulative performance! He was never better than he was in Gaslight (1944)!

Image

74. National Velvet (1944, Clarence Brown) - 7/10
--- I'm not a great fan of horse movies, but this one triggered all the 'family movie' notions. Beautiful color, likable story of a ambitious little girl, and a breakthrough spotlight on young Elizabeth Taylor! Heartwarming!

Image

75. Double Indemnity (1944, Billy Wilder) - 9/10
--- Sooooo silky smooth.... crime can barely be done any better. To the point where Double Indemnity (1944) is almost too perfect for it's own good. Splendidly Noir!

Image

76. Der verzauberte Tag [The Enchanted Day] (1944, Peter Pewas) - 6/10
--- Took a while before I was in the groove, but this turned out to be a solid tragedy. Felt more sleazy than your average Nazi-era romance, and I guess that's where the appeal lays.

Image

77. Die Frau meiner Träume [Woman of my Dreams] (1944, Georg Jacoby) - 6/10
--- A playful German musical in full Nazi-color, aka Agfacolor, and "The Nazi Ginger Rogers" Marika Rökk in full effect! Light farce, but a jolly nice farce.

Image

78. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944, Vincente Minnelli) - 7/10
--- Apparently Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) is an American classic, but not being American, I wouldn't know anything about that. What I can say is that this Vincente Minnelli/Judy Garland collaboration does warm you up. Gracefully lively and sweet. There's no denying it's charms.

Image

79. Summer Storm (1944, Douglas Sirk) - 5/10
--- The story has it's intrigue, but in a weird way the production lets it down. Weird casting choices and some less than magical key scenes stops it from delivering on it's potential. There are good scenes in there too, and the allure of the George Sanders & Linda Darnell pairing will keep you watching.

Image

80. Flying with Music (1942, George Archainbaud) - 3/10
--- A brief musical diversion with mostly unknowns and sometimes outrageous comedy, which somehow managed to get nominated for two Oscars in the musical department. That's the most outrageous part. This is a odd nothing movie from Hal Roach.

SpoilerShow
1. Forever and a Day (1943, 7 directors) - 6/10
2. The Powers Girl (1943, Norman Z. McLeod) - 5/10

4. Shadow of a Doubt (1943, Alfred Hitchcock) - 7/10

This is perhaps best thought of as Laurel and Hardy's usual brand of humour crossed with The Sting or House of Games, which works far better than it might sound on paper. The strongest moments still belong to the comic duo, but Robert Bailey is fine as a charming young confidence trickster, and there is a lot to like in how the project has a less skit-based plot than most of the duo's 40s films. There are low patches for sure when the duo are not centre stage, but this is a very different sort of Laurel and Hardy comedy in the best sort of way.

5. Secret Beyond the Door...

6. The House of the Seven Gables
Pretty good gothic drama featuring a squabbling family and ancestral curses in antebellum Massachusetts. George Sanders and Vincent Price are in fine form. The movie features the abolitionist movement heavily in a subplot, which in 1940 I suspect was still kind of risky politically for a major release. You can see it here:

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

35. Whisky Galore! (1949): 7.0 - entertaining movie about some innocent civil disobedience; the looting of whiskey from a stranded ship during a whisky shortage on a Scottish Island. But the plot feels too thin for even its mere 80s minute runtime.
36. Riso amaro (1949): 8.2 - "The combination of neorealism with noir works surprisingly well, because they complement each other. The neorealist aspects give the movie room to breath by showing the larger world beside the 4 main characters. While the noir aspects gives the plot momentum

Jeanne Crain does okay playing herself as both an adult and nervous teen in flashback, but her character is not very likeable here. Despite having a doting boyfriend in the pleasant but socially awkward Alan Young, she keeps cursing her luck, say that "beggars can't be choosers" and complaining about his Adam's apple. It is also hard not to have misgivings about the way Glenn Langan's French teacher is played out and the ending is a bit awkward. With a fine supporting cast (Hattie McDaniel, Esther Dale and Ann Todd are standouts), this is reasonably engaging while it lasts though.

I’ll be leaving on a holiday to Italy tomorrow. I will update the leaderboard regardless, but with a tan.

If not, you know the reason why. Will do a short summary at the beginning of May like I use to.

Anything happen this decade?Show
1. The Battle of Russia (1943)
2. Force of Evil (1948)
3. Know Your Enemy - Japan (1945)
4. They Live by Night (1948)

9. Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
10. The Palm Beach Story (1942)
I'm glad I requested this from the library for the Rosenbaum challenge in January... fun and funny with a lot of charm and great dialogue. The plot largely rests on the "we are unable to talk to each other like adults" which always annoys me, but it was still a pretty enjoyable watch.

Shakespeare's Scottish play undergoes the Orson Welles treatment here: lots of low camera angles, moody skies and eerily large and echo-prone sets, all of which look glorious in stark black and white. Playing the lead character, Welles taps well into his mixed feelings, insecurities and paranoia after doing the deed. Pacing is a bit of a problem with the Bard's poetic but lengthy soliloquies sometimes subtracting from the extremely visual and atmospheric treatment of the story here, but this is a very decent stuff with Jeanette Nolan solid as the conniving Lady Macbeth.

Making his English language debut, Jean Gabin is charming here an alcoholic unsure of whether he killed a man during a recent drinking binge and there is a great montage sequence credited to Salvador Dalì (see above) for the binge. Ida Lupino plays a woman who Gabin saves from suicide, but their romance felt by-the-books. Thomas Mitchell and Claude Rains have colourful supporting roles, but neither made much of an impact on me and I disliked the loud and melodramatic music score. The Oscar nominated foggy cinematography was impressive though, coupled against eerie foghorns noises.
