a) Nuestra Señora de Paris (Teo Hernandez, 1982)
b) Baltie zvani (Ivars Kraulitis, 1961)
c) Babakiueria (Don Featherstone, 1986)
d) Bruits d'images aux fenêtres d'osmin (Jakobis, 1984)
e) Das triadische Ballett (Margaret Hasting/Franz Schömbs/Georg Veden, 1970)

Really solid series of shorts here; a and d are the two overtly experimental examples from the bunch, respectively a view of Notre Dame and of - various cityscapes, mostly - both cut very fast, enough that I wouldn't recommend anyone who has problems with strobes or certainly epilepsy to watch them; the last is a three-part short ballet film with each dancer wearing very odd costumes and a particular color scheme dominant - I liked the last, black, the best. The second, Baltie zvani is in many ways the most conventional, a bird's-eye-view often, using some brilliant crane shots, of a little girl in pursuit of flowers and then her attempt to bring them home through a busy city under heavy construction. It may be "ordinary" but it's really beautiful and one of the best of many similar-length films about kids from this period, though far from the most famous. The third film is a very funny - but also quite serious certainly - inversion of the colonialist narrative, a mockumentary about the anniversary of the finding of "Babakiueria" by black colonists who quickly dominated the white "aboriginal" natives.

17. Anjô-ke no butôkai / The Ball at the Anjo House (Kôzaburô Yoshimura, 1947)

An end-of-an-era drama, the fall of a great family to the destruction of the nobility in the wake of World War II, this features the titular Anjo family struggling with a new order in which their old butler may come back to save them by buying their house - if a gangster who holds their debt doesn't beat him to it. This reminded me in many ways of other stories of great families in decline - The Magnificent Ambersons and Il gattopardo are probably the most obvious examples, but it's a little different too in taking place mostly over one evening, the night of the ball in question, the last held in the great house by it's longtime owners, in which their fates may be decided. This is a solid but to me not really spectacular film of it's type, notable mostly for the acting, in particular the performances of the Sesuko Hara and Yumeko Aizome as the two thirty-something unmarried daughters of the family patriarch. Hara is my favorite actress and while I wouldn't call this one of her very best performances or roles, it's interesting in that it seems to point the way to some of her great work with Ozu over the next 15 years - the loyal daughter trying to keep the family together, more concerned for her father's happiness than for finding love in her own life.

18. End Play (Tim Burstall, 1976)

Very much in the Hitchcockian vein, this to me was an only partially successful thriller, about a couple of brothers, one of them a paraplegic and the other his brother who has come for a visit, and a series of murders that the police apparently think the work of the able-bodied brother - this is all information we get early on, no real spoiler. It evolves into something more interesting and complex, but ultimately didn't work for me beyond the momentary pleasures of "how is he going to get out of this" and the acting by George Mallaby and John Waters as the siblings. It tries to be twisty and unpredictable, but really isn't, and while it starts off with a fairly strong sense of realism it really derails in the third act, in particular
SpoilerShow
the absolute idiocy of the police in the last scene beggars belief.
19. L'assassin habite... au 21 / The Murderer Lives at Number 21 (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1942)

Fun comedy-crime pic - mostly comedy - that to my mind falls somewhere between Agatha Christie and Charlie Chan in tone, with Pierre Fresnay wonderful as the police inspector who infiltrates a boarding house to catch the murderer who leaves his card "M. Durand" pinned to each of his victims. I've seen this listed as film noir on some lists - I would never categorize it as such myself, and I think those looking for something hard-boiled or exciting aren't going to get it for the most part, though the climax has a few brief thrills, and the ending is reasonably clever if not that unpredictable to those who have seen a lot of thrillers. Lots of fun and beautifully shot - the opening murder sequence was probably fairly novel in it's day, in the use of POV - but certainly not one of Clouzot's best IMO.

20. Harlequin (Simon Wincer, 1980)

I guess Robert Powell was one of the go-to guys in the 70s and early 80s when you wanted a magnetic personality, piercing eyes, tall and handsome, and mysterious and radiating power. Mahler, Jesus of Nazareth and now this film make me wonder why he didn't become a bigger star; even though I don't outright love any of the three, there's no question of the power of his presence in the central role in each film. Here he is the "harlequin", the trickster, a clown perhaps, or a spy, or a con-man, but seemingly a faith healer of some sort who comes into the lives of an unhappy married couple, a politician (David Hemmings) and his wife (Carmen Duncan) when their young son is dying of leukemia. Powell's mysterious curative powers convince the wife - and his magnetism convinces her that his healing hands might be put to other uses for her own sake - but there are mysterious powerful forces playing out against him as well, and this in the end has much of the feel of a conspiracy-thriller, with a Machiavellian power (Broderick Crawford in one of his last roles) who seems to know some things about the trickster/magician and wants none of it in his world. And interesting film, nice looking and generally well-acted that in the end just doesn't quite add up to what it promises in the beginning, feeling all too prosaic by the end despite a rather obvious OOH GOTCHA final shot.

21. The Notebook (Nick Cassavetes, 2004)

Nick's dad is spinning in his grave.

19. Panique (1946) - 7
20. Iodo (1977) - 6,5

Did not have the luckiest day at picking movies yesterday... or I must be getting tired. Even something as transgressive as Iodo didn't do it for me. The many flashbacks and convoluted exposition (not helped by atrocious subs, gramatically speaking at least, on the official DVD that I had in my collection for ages... are there better fansubs out there if I want to give it a second chance someday?) just killed it before the supposed grand finale. But I do like his trashy style, bit of a Jess Franco element, some Japanese influences, and can see how this combined with arty melodrama and weird subject matter would have influenced Kim Ki-Duk for instance.
Camille was just written and acted too stiff and theatrical for my taste, did not make me feel anything. Although there are one or two great onliners in there and the story has potential (see the many adaptations).
Panique also didn't quite work. The camerawork is nicely noir at times, the story again has great potential, the actors are good... but it felt flat for me, the plot and characters just did not come across as anything close to believable, all contrived to have some kind of
SpoilerShow
moralistic mob scene finale
...

The final day of the challenge will bring me at least three more films, maybe four or even five if I have to energy to sneak in a short one. After that it is back to regular business :) This has been the second challenge I really participated in I think (even though the Imagine festival also took up a lot of my time this month) after the female director challenge of 2, 3 years ago. It forces me to write more regular small pieces on movies, something I have been doing less and less over the years. I hope some of them have been useful to somebody! This is fun to do every couple of years ;)
Also thanks to the one person who watched Era Uma Vez Eu, Verônica (I had suspected more after I provided a way to see it, but I guess I should have picked something short and cross-challenged to peak interest ;)). Marcelo Gomes might be thé best director working in current Brazillian cinema, and I hope more people will start championing his work!

Thanks! Honestly, this is the first challenge I have ended up on the top spit since the French challenge back in '12 or '13 - so a bit of a happy surprise!

I believe I'm done as well. Flying home tomorrow, might see one or two films before Angel starts publishing the results - but that would be post-challenge.

11. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Lanthimos, 2017) 0 official lists (Nomination from TSPDT 21st Century drop-offs)
Lanthimos is one of my favourite directors at the moment, and this one has an austere brilliance for most of its running time, with the strange affectless characters who inhabit Lanthimos' worlds. I was slightly let down by the ending, which, although intense, feels like it resolves in a way that is flatter, and less weird, than the rest of the film promises.

As a mysterious woman pays a young man to marry her in the middle of the night with the promise of an annulment the next day, Homicidal gets off to an intriguing start and the opening quarter-hour is fantastic with Joan Marshall perfectly peculiar as the lady in question. This start is far stronger than the rest of the film though with lots of time dedicated to characters other than the curious Marshall. Much like Psycho to which it is often compared, the film suffers from a tacked-on psychiatric explanation at the end, but the story is generally engaging if occasionally confusing.

A brutal and intense drama about domestic abuse. Rena Owen is excellent as the woman torn between the rhetoric that she has been taught ("it's just a woman's lot") and the welfare of her children with the film veering into some dark and uncomfortable yet thematically relevant territory. The makeup for her bruises and scars is frighteningly realistic too. The film unfortunately never quite gets under the husband's skin though, but this is a relatively engaging look at learned behaviours within violent families and the difficulties of escaping unhealthy relationships.

And that's it for me this month. An even five-zero. Thanks for hosting, max. It's been a blast exploring all these films - and venturing beyond the safety of Official Checks. ;)

Hey, Teo Hernandez! Didn't know one of his works was nominated, or available for that matter. Will have to check that one out next month...

No more movies from me unfortunately. Thank you again for hosting Max. And congratulations to St. Gloede. You get the opportunity to brag about it next week! Looks like a triple win by us Norwegians.

Thanks! Honestly, this is the first challenge I have ended up on the top spit since the French challenge back in '12 or '13 - so a bit of a happy surprise!

I believe I'm done as well. Flying home tomorrow, might see one or two films before Angel starts publishing the results - but that would be post-challenge.
Well, I guess St. Gloede wasn't wrong...

I absolutely love the overview and commentary, Max! Can't imagine the work you put into that. Incredible!

(I'm certainly not going to be a contender for second though)
PS: Your three Challenge wins are Japan in '13, and the French and German challenges in '11.

René Clément is a bit like Jacques Becker in the sense of not being mentioned much in the pantheon of great directors, but everytime I see another one of their movies I am puzzled on why that is not the case. They are obviously very skilled and take on personal subject matter with a maturity that is rare to find with many bigger names. History is not always right, let's keep it at that.

22. Panna zázracnica (1967) - 8,5
I was hoping to save some of the best for last, and with this movie that certainly was the case. So many "wow" moments! The very dreamlike first part meanders in to something more regularly symbolic / surrealistic, but keeps the mystery intact to come to a satisfying conclusion. I wish it had done just a tiny bit more, so I could have given it a 9, or who knows how many accolades, but as it is, it is already great. Need to see more Uher too.

23. Kundskabens træ (1981) - 8
Innocence lost when (not only) fruits of knowledge are eaten... or something like that. I guess it feels very authentic and most of us can recognise human behaviour, and all the stupidities there can be, in this school microscosm. Well made, don't know if I actually liked it.

24. Fanfare (1958) - 7,5
More nostalgic 50's, at least when you are Dutch. The only thing that keeps this from a higher grade is the cartoonesk set-pieces feel a bit too childish for my taste. The outcome of it all is also very predictable. But again, very well made, that's why I could also enjoy it a lot, thankfully.

The end of Tatami Galaxy is actually where it all comes together, pushing it to a great series rather than just very good. I strongly encourage you to finish it. It'll be worth it. Also the film Night is Short, Walk on Girl is a sort of companion piece to the series from the same director and is easier to follow if you dig the general style but feel overwhelmed by the avalanche of dialogue.

20. Harlequin (Simon Wincer, 1980)
21. The Notebook (Nick Cassavetes, 2004)
22 The Captive Heart (Basil Dearden, 1946)

World War II POW film from the still underrated Dearden that almost manages to be something really special, but is undone by a few questionable choices in screenplay and direction I think. The biggest problem, which runs throughout the film, is a fractured focus on too many characters. While all the acting is solid, much of it first-rate, and the characters aren't uninteresting, it's the central drama/romance about Michael Redgrave's character - a non-Brit who has taken the identity of a dead British officer while on the run, only to end up in a POW camp and having to fake a life that isn't his - and the wife of the man he's impersonating back home (played by Redgrave's real-life spouse Rachel Kempson) that is really interesting and fresh; when we move away from these characters we are in more prosaic and familiar and less engaging territory. The Redgrave-Kempson relationship offers really poignancy and brings up all kinds of elements of guilt and identity in ways that are rather interesting;
SpoilerShow
and it is unfortunate that their meeting near the end is spoiled by an overbearing use of music, which really undercuts the poignancy and power of this sequence
. Still well worth seeing but I had some hopes for greatness early on which did not see fulfillment.

23. Remorques / Stormy Waters (Jean Grémillon, 1941)

My first Grémillon film, I think, a film made (or at least released) during the Occupation but with no reference to it. Jean Gabin is a tugboat captain, I guess on the North Sea though it wasn't entirely clear to this person who doesn't really know his French geography, with a sick wife (Madeleine Renaud, probably giving the best performance in the film) who won't tell him how sick she is, and a potential new romance in the form of a younger woman (Michèle Morgan) who he rescues along with her asshole husband and his crew. Obvious models aside the sea rescue scenes were well done and it's an engaging piece overall but I felt like the central love triangle didn't amount to so much overall; this is I think my first Grémillon film also and there are some stylistic oddities and editing choices that I found strange and a little off. In any case I'm sure I'll see more, and the scenes between Gabin and Renaud do stand out as more realistic and believable - more "modern"? - than a lot of husband-wife dialogues from this period.[/spoiler]

That's it for me, thanks Max!

Oh I will definitely finish it off ! The dialogues are ok but the speed of the narrator voice was hard to follow at start (reading subtitles) and until you get more familiar with storyline and characters. I love the end song.

Regarding Tatami Galaxy, I still need to go back and try to watch it. The narration speed is just so fast though.

On to westerns it is for me in May, I think. I'm glad to have watched several great DtC-nominated films here that I otherwise probably wouldn't have prioritised any time soon. Many thanks for hosting, maxwell!

That's all, folks!

Final Stats and Challenge Update

Users
Through the entire month of April, we've had 35 (+2) participants in the Doubling the Canon Nominees Challenge. Congrats to St. Gloede for predicting back on April 7th that "I'm certainly not going to be a contender for second" and taking their first challenge win in almost 6 years with a final score of 71. Kudos also to 72allinncallme and albajos for finishing in 2nd and 3rd place with 64 and 60 watches, respectively.

24 people finished in double-digits, with 14 above twenty watches. Average number of watches was 20.37, median count was 16.

Leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Years
Films watched ranged from 1904 to 2017, spanning the entire range of the nominees list, as there are no older or newer films; there are 97 unique years explored in the challenge so far. Our most recent year with zero watches is 1937. 2017 is the most-watched year with 27 watches, followed by 1970 with 19 watches. Thirty years have at least 10 watches. Here's a list of watch count by decade:

Who is Getting Their Films Watched?
This is a nominees challenge, so someone had to nominate the films, right? So who's getting their nominees watched? 72 different people - sol has been quite successful with 34 watches, nearly doubling the folks in 2nd place. jvv, maxwelldeux, XxXApathy420XxX, and OldAle1 are in a four-way tie for second with 18 watches each. Bonus Game Update
We got up to a list of 40 films (in the OP) that people love enough to want to promote and get more people to see them. 38 of them got at least one viewing, excluding only a 13-hour film and a late addition to the list. 20 different people watched at least one of the films included in the bonus game. sol, 72allinncallme, and maxwelldeux were the leaders of the bonus game, watching 22, 19, and 11 films for the bonus game, respectively.

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winner is weirdboy for "double the flavor, double the fun" because it's the exact same tag I used one month for the Triple Challenge, so weirdboy clearly has excellent taste. Congrats!
