11th Bonus Game watch, and available on Amazon Prime. A modern retelling of the Rasputin story, Robert Powell KILLS it as the creepy Rasputin-esque character. Unfortunately, this film had a couple general strikes against it from the outset - a) I don't really like the Rasputin story, and b) I'm not a fan of supernatural films. That said, I thought this was much better than I initially anticipated and enjoyed it somewhat, though it wasn't my thing. But a pretty cool creepy film for anyone who's a light-horror/thriller fan.

Also, that's my 11th watch for the Bonus Game, but since I didn't claim it for the 10th I'll promote...

Anita (2013) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/anita-2013/

This is allisoncm's nomination for DtC, and a fantastic one. It's a documentary about the confirmation hearing of Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court and how Anita Hill, who accused him of repeated sexual harassment, was treated. It's a film that was a tad ahead of its time, but has aged extremely well, especially (and I hate these terms, but I'll go with them for clarity) in the wake of the Weinstein era/#MeToo Movement/Brett Kavanaugh hearings. Utterly fascinating.

You posted while I was typing, so I had to make my comment... ;)

Also, to be fair, beavis also watched Harlequin this month, though before you promoted it.

And on a completely separate note, the first film that got you a lot of "I'll watch that even if I don't expect to like it" credit for me was Timecrimes (2007). Watched that based on your review and ended up loving it.

very exiting music, good registration, not a movie
11. A Field in England (2013) - 7/10
this one is trying a bit too hard I feel, the dialogues are clearly meant to be funny, but I didn't laugh, the trippy stuff is meant to be cool, but I wasn't blown away

on the whole very interesting movies, potential for lots of coolness, but let down a bit in different ways for each of them

b) Askeladden og de gode hjelperne / The Ashlad and His Good Helpers (Ivo Caprino, 1961)
c) Agarrando pueblo / The Vampires of Poverty (Carlos Mayolo/Luis Ospina, 1977)

4. The Gang's All Here (Busby Berkely, 1943)
5. Night Tide (Curtis Harrington, 1961)
6. Cry Vengeance (Mark Stevens, 1954)
7. Panique (Julien Duvivier, 1946)
8. The Beast of the City (Charles Brabin, 1932)
9. Clue (Jonathan Lynn, 1985)
10. Lee's Adventure (Frant Gwo, 2011)
11. La nuit fantastique / Fantastic Night (Marcel L'Herbier, 1942)
12. Dr. Plonk (Rolf de Heer, 2007)
13. Twice a Man (Gregory J. Markopoulos, 1964)

Experimental short feature that almost feels like a conventional-length mainstream film that got cut in half and then re-edited to make it as confusing and narratively incomprehensible as possible; somehow it all works, a fragmentary tale of a young gay man (maybe) brought back from the verge of suicide, a young woman (Olympia Dukakis - wow, what a journey from this to Moonstruck) identified as Young Mother who may be in love with the young man - is she his mother? his sister? IMDb credits state "stepmother" but I didn't see any indication of that, nor of her being played as an older woman by another actress. Like I said its all quite fragmentary, elliptical, shot silent with occasional voiceovers, dialogue, some of that edited to incomprehensibility. Rain..the beauty of New York City...the enjoyment of struggling to put together plot strands that certainly are there, elusive, out of reach, kept away, so we keep looking, wondering, only maybe finding them, but always finding the beauty, the rain.

14.Summerfield (Ken Hannam, 1977)

Watched a surprisingly excellent copy on YT. sol describes this perfectly as a cross between The Wicker Man and Wake in Fright which gave me very high expectations, too high I thought but... astonishingly enough they were met and perhaps even exceeded. A teacher at a remote school starts to delve into the mystery of the disappearance of his predecessor, gets involved with a strange family - a young woman, her daughter and her brother - who live isolated on an island accessible by a gated causeway - and ultimately of course gets much more than he bargained for. It is really hard to say much about this without spoiling what ended up being a quite singular film - despite it's obvious similarities to the two films cited above, especially the first. I doubt it's a coincidence that the island is called Summerfield given that The Wicker Man took place on Summerisle. And yet it's very much it's own film as well and the references to a rare blood disease and certain other elements point both to some obvious plot points that get sorted out later - and also I think some deeper underlying meanings that might take more viewings to sort out. I never quite figured out the significance of the cannon, for example, apart from it's appearance in some pictures that our protagonist stares at incessantly, trying to figure out a secret. And the ending - what we think is the ending - is powerful and dark, and then....nope, that's enough. See for yourself.

 Thanks for watching this. Hopefully your positive comments will intrigue others to watch this rather than that other film on mine that everyone has been criticising this month.

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on The Incident, Blocho, so thanks for sharing and for checking out one of my nominations. I'm glad that you didn't just dismiss it based on your initial thoughts and I'm pleased to see it clearly had an impact on you.

I would be curious to know what you will be rating it for the DTC ballot if you are willing to share but don't feel obliged if you would rather keep your votes to yourself :) Also, here is my review of the film in case you would like to read more about why I regard it so highly: The Incident
Thanks for reading my very long post. I won't be voting in DTC, but I've come very far around on this movie. I might yet put it on my 500<400 list. I already caught your review on imdb. Pretty cool to have it linked there.

Phew! Finally finished this one. Clocking in at over three hours, Bill Douglas provides a sometimes fascinating and at other times unfocused look into the formation of a pioneer workers' union in nineteenth century England. The topic is not uninteresting and several shots also have a landscape painting quality with Douglas using shadows and silhouettes very well. The film takes a long time to get going though (it is an hour in before a worker even thinks about starting a union) and I didn't feel like I really got to know any of the characters. I did like the insight into penal Australia though.

It is tempting to call Columbus a romantic movie, however, the film shies away from developing the connection between the pair as anything beyond intimate friendship, with the movie rather consisting of several philosophical conversations. As such, this is a film with limited dramatic tension and even character development takes a backseat to the audiovisual feel of the film. It is, however, simply a superb film to look at and listen too, full of carefully framed shots of interior and exterior building designs and blessed with an unusual yet very moody music score.

The first hour of this Wages of Fear remake is uneven as we are shown brief snippets of each character's crimes and how they wound up in South America, but the final hour is both intense and thrilling as the foursome set out on their journey along rickety bridges that constantly look in danger of collapsing and through rugged terrain. The Oscar nominated sharp sound recording is a big plus here, with every truck noise making it appear like the explosives are about to be triggered, and coupled with an atmospheric Tangerine Dream music score, this is a divine film to listen to.

Two childhood sweethearts decide to spend the day pretending that they are an old married couple in this unusual drama. The premise is quirky, yet all that it ultimately amounts to is the two protagonists conversing since they only interact with one other character (see above). The film does admittedly reach a rather potent emotional peak in the final fifteen minutes as we discover what tore the former lovers apart in the first place, and Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson certainly give it their all in the lead roles. Not sure if the black and white really adds to the film though.

Holy crap ive got to see Summerfield stat... Wake in Fright and Wicker Man are both in my top 10. Yeeesh... now I need to lower expectations so I don't absolutely count on seeing another film so close to perfection.

Yes, you owe it to yourself to give the film a whirl this month. ;) To lower your expectations, I would take The Wicker Man and Wake in Fright over Summerfield any of day of the week. I don't recall it being anywhere near polished, but it is a pretty neat little film with a small but noticeable debt to those earlier 70s efforts.

Fair enough, sol! My anticipation has now plummeted and I'll be looking forward as soon as I can extract myself from my work.

8. Little Fugitive

9. The Work

10. The Endless Summer
Enjoyably lazy surfing doc, with some tongue-in-cheek narration that feels a little less tongue-in-cheek when it takes a hard swerve into racism during the West Africa section.

11. Sweet Country

12. 13th
Really disappointed in this one. Poorly made and confused. I have no idea what the director was trying to do with the many, many short sections that just played a song and displayed the lyrics on screen. I also have no idea why every single time someone said the word criminal, the director cut to a full-frame image of the word criminal--happened about 30 or 40 times.

All three of these apply to the Bonus challenge.

17. All This Mayhem (2014)

Alright, Sol. Here you go.
18. End Play (1976)
19. Summerfield (1977)
I actually really liked this pair of thrillers, enjoying End Play probably a little more than Summerfield but still finding both worthwhile. End Play was quite clever but Summerfield had that gut punch of an ending. Sol, you really should have led with one of these two rather than Dr Plonk. I think your overall impression of the bonus game would've turned out better.

9. The Big Steal (Siegel, 1949) 1 official list (Nomination from jvv)
A fun minor noir that benefits from the Mitchum and Greer pairing, and excellent scene-stealing support from William Bendix and Ramon Novarro. However, it's essentially a feature-length chase without much psychological depth.
5/10 (IMDb) 1/6 (DtC)

10. Les mille et une mains / A Thousand and One Hands (Ben-Barka, 1973) 1 official list (Nomination from Angel Glez)
The lives of wool workers in Casablanca with very little story to speak of. The cinematography is good, but I found it very boring otherwise.
3/10 (IMDb) 0/6 (DtC)

Double in ParadiseShow
1. Sterne - 7/10
2. The Sea That Thinks - 5/10
3. Lee's Adventure - 5/10 (Bonus game #1)
4. Dr Plonk - 6/10 (Bonus game #2)
5. King Rat - 7/10
6. Running on Empty - 7/10 (Bonus game #3)
7. The Field - 8/10 (Bonus game #4)
8. BabaKiueria - 6/10 (Bonus game #5)
9. Fists in the Pocket - 7/10
10. Sorcerer - 8/10
11. Fucking Amal - 7/10
12. House of Games - 6/10
13. Redd Inc - 4/10
14. I, Pierre Riviere, Having slaughtered my mother, my sister and my brother... -7/10 -This was a fascinating insight into the account of a real life murder case that took place in France in the 19th Century. It delves into the psychology behind the murders and explores the intriguing backstory of the family involved. I would never have discovered this if it wasn't nominated for the DTC, so thanks to whoever picked this gem :)

15. Szamanka - 5/10 - I'm a huge fan of Zulawski and this is the only time I've been disappointed by a film of his. The ethereal and mystical qualities of the film's first half eventually dissipated in the second half and the promising storyline failed to deliver on its intriguing premise. I'm accustomed to the acting in Zulawski's films treading a fine line between sheer brilliance and being over the top but here it seemed too bombastic for its own good. The film wasn't without its flashes of brilliance but these were sadly few and far between.

16. Alpine Fire - 6/10 - I was surprised at how high this currently ranks in the DTC list. It's a fine film with some memorable sequences and a haunting ending but it didn't resonate with me as much as it appears to have done so for others on the forum.

That is probably my lot for this year, I'll be sending in a write in ballot with these updates before the deadline. It's been fun watching others nominations and I'm looking forward to finding out how the list will look after the results. The Field and Sorcerer are my favourite discoveries of this challenge and I hope they make the cut.

I'm glad you liked it  , though -7 would be far from a gem in my book. Hoping you are a more generous DtC rater. ;) :whistling:

43. Angela (1995) USA 42 checks [sol - bonus]
44. Anita (2013) USA 48 checks [allisoncm - bonus]
45.The Gold Diggers (1983) UK 2 official list 109 checks [OldAle1 - bonus]
All movies with female directors as the poll deadline is upon us.

Off. list progress
+10 Doubling the Canon (17,0%)

Nominated by
32 by users (incl. 6 shorts)
(Top users: 3: OldAle1; 2: AB537, jeff_v, ofrene, rnilsson19 & sol; 20 with 1)
10 DtC 2014 (incl. 1 short)
05 21st Century drop
02 TSPDT drop
02 DtC 2018 Nom

That brought me to 6 bonus.

The next nominated one out is Ma-Ma. Or aka Rock'n Roll Wolf, or Med Grimm og Gru in norwegian. (and still at 1 vote on the ballot, but with the new akas some recognize it now)

Anyway. There is two versions of this. One in original russian, and one in english with new arrangements. I genereally recommend the english one basically beacuse the music sounds better, but I'll link both so you can compare the songs if you want.

And yes, this is a musical. A family-oriented musical. Basically 95% of the movie is song and dance, so if that is not your cup of tea you wont get much out of it. But it is the cult film in Norway, basically everyone has seen this in their youth, and the Norwegian Broadcasting has bought it in so that we can stream it 24/7 until 2027 if we want (and they'll probably renew it then)

English version, 4:3Show

Alright, Sol. Here you go.
18. End Play (1976)
19. Summerfield (1977)
I actually really liked this pair of thrillers, enjoying End Play probably a little more than Summerfield but still finding both worthwhile. End Play was quite clever but Summerfield had that gut punch of an ending. Sol, you really should have led with one of these two rather than Dr Plonk. I think your overall impression of the bonus game would've turned out better.
Yeah, I agree about that. Thinking that Dr Plonk would appeal to most film buffs was a mistake - and based on OldAle's impressions too, Summerfield is indeed what I should have led with. I don't know about End Play; it's great that you liked film, but I would imagine that it's appeal would be rather limited to the horror/thriller loving crowd.

A suggestion, flavo. You're coming up to your second promoted film. You only need to watch one more promoted movie and you get to promote another of your own. I would suggest that you promote something that is less than 4 hours long this time. Well, that's my excuse for not watch it in case you're wondering - but I appreciate you giving some of my stuff a spin.

I think I'll go for the English one because even though the unsubbed Russian one is in attractive-looking widescreen, my knowledge of Russian is limited to да and нет. But yes, I'll watch this. Thanks for nominating something readily available!

Gordon Liu is excellent here as a mysterious rich man who manages to keep his kung fu talents hidden from his newly appointed servant in a variety of clever ways. In fact, the best fight sequences are built on this as he manipulates a woman's limbs to make it look like she is fighting and as he has meetings about wine tasting and antiques that devolve into battles. These incidents are all very funny, especially the chatter about priceless ornaments while Liu and his opponent are fighting. Plot takes a real backseat here though and the ending is extremely abrupt.

And my apologies, max. I had intended to use this one to fill in the 1979 gap in our viewings, but it looks like the release date has undergone some recent changing (see the iCM comments for the film). Three years is quite a bit of difference, but I've seen more extreme release date changes before.

@albajos: Thanks for catching that error that I made 3 weeks ago

@sol: We got 1979 earlier today, so we're good there. PS: My first reaction to your last film listed here was "Oh - I see you've ready my wife's biography..." (long story, but "ho" was the very first nickname I gave her)

And with jdidaco's watch of Babakiueria, that brings me to 4 watches, so I get to nominate another one for the bonus game... tomorrow (after I've thought about it).

PS: OP Updated, finally.
