I generally don't namedrop movies there unless they're triples. So you'd better nominate something that fits all challenges then. (Bush Christmas would fit this year f.ex)
Interestingly enough, Bush Christmas has not (to my knowledge) ever received a DVD release over here. Maybe it's more treasured overseas? The 1980s remake is quite easy to find though. Never seen the original. Nor the remake.
The original Bush Christmas does have a DVD release here, my local library has a copy. I borrowed it about a year back and absolutely loved it. Borrowed the remake as well a few months later but it went back unwatched.

Was it a "real" DVD or one of those BPS ones? I haven't been actively on the prowl for the film, but I couldn't find it a few years ago when I was looking for it - and I haven't seen it for sale anywhere since - but good to know that it's around.

Seemed legit to me. Newt time I am at the library I will take a look. I feel like I'm the only one who has ever borrowed it, it always seems to be there.

Please don't do that.

I didn't think Bush Christmas counted in this challenge. It's not listed in the Nominees list.

Don't take the dislike to heart.
Yeah, sorry - my comments aren't necessarily directed at you. It's just general frustration. You have an excuse since I asked you to watch Dr. Plonk on the other thread, but I don't know why everybody else is watching it rather than my other nominated films. I mean, half the reason why I have included a trailer with each of my promoted (where possible) was to give people a taste of what they would be in for were they to give one of my films a spin...
Sol, don't feel too bad. Nobody has watched my recommendation at all this month. :(

It's not what we're discussing. With a nomination it would be a triple, there are no triples this month.

Well, luckily you can promote a second film if you watch another four movies promoted by someone else. ;)

Looking at the OP, I think there is just a general disinterest in the Bonus Challenge. I mean, 72a and myself are the only participants who have watched more than 10 promoted movies this month, and max is the only other person who has watched more than five. It's a bit of a shame, but it definitely seems like very few out there are interested in watching other's people stuff, with most people just preferring to go with whatever they had previously lined up. So it's not all about you - or me; just lack of interest in the Bonus Challenge. But that shouldn't stop you from watching 4 more of my recommendations (other folks' recommendations) to get the chance to promote something else. :D

Well, I just want to focus on the (commonly considered) good ones first. I haven't even seen DtC nominee Ningen no jôken yet, and that one is ahead of the majority of the other nominees

Yeah, I think I am (for real this time!) going to stop focusing on the Bonus Challenge and just try to get through some of the stuff that I had previously lined up to watch. I definitely want to get through Sorcerer at least this month after picking it up on DVD on the cheap in January.

SpoilerShow
1. Hakuja Den (1958)- 7/10
2. Heroes of the East (1978)- 7/10
3. Apocalypse Domani (1980)- 6/10
4. Harlequin (1980) - 7,5/10
5. Kamera o tomeru na! (2017) - 8/10
6. Il Cavaliere Misterioso (1948) - 7,5/10
old skool adventure with lovelely production values, so a lot to love here. It is pure entertainment, so some of the plotting cuts corners and doesn't always go for realism, but never in a distracting way. I loved this, almost gave it an 8

7. Yôkihi (1955) - 7/10
also very good production values here, but with a fairly generic bit of drama at the core. The intrigues were not that intriguing and when the plotting cuts corners in a drama it becomes a bit silly. Not that it's a silly film or anything, but I can see why this is considered a weaker effort by Mizoguchi.

I've just generally lost interest in the challenges this month, as I've been working on a few side projects of my own when it comes to what I watch. On Dr. Plonk, I did enjoy it well enough, and yes, I do trust your recommendations. Don't feel discouraged. I've yet to get anything on DtC, I probably killed a couple of my chances this year too by promoting them. We'll see, I suppose.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat. I just got burnt out on films and have been playing video games with my wife more. It's not that I'm watching other films, just that I'm not watching many at all. There's actually a lot in the bonus game I want to watch, just haven't gotten up the motivation.

And I'm back in the game finally. This film nearly put me to sleep, and I mean that as a complement. Family hosts their son's Major when he's on vacation during WW2. They family bends over backwards to accommodate the Major, in hopes of currying favor for their son and to make their son's life easier. Of course, the Major is a bit odd, and the family goes to ridiculous lengths... This was hilarious - it just kept getting more and more absurd. I found myself identifying with Toth a bit - I would have hidden anywhere, too. Nice pick, St. G!

Bonus Game Update
We are up to a list of 38 films (in the OP) that people love enough to want to promote and get more people to see them. So far, we've had 16 people watch at least one film for the bonus game - sol and 72allinncallme are in the lead here with 21 and 18 watches, respectively. Come play, because there are some great gems in there!

Polite Request
The Bonus Game is getting to the point where I can't keep the list of films in my head, so it would really help out if, when posting your watches, you'd include a) the nominator (list here), and b) some indication if the film is on the Bonus Game list. Those of you already doing this, thank you - you're making my life way easier.

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winner is albajos for "Following Munchausen in his flight" because it's an allusion that's vexing me and I feel like I should know, but must concede victory to albajos. Congrats!

I do trust your recommendations. Don't feel discouraged.
Thanks. I don't know. The whole situation is just confusing for me. I nominated eight AU/NZ films for the DTC this year, six of which are currently in the Bonus Game, and yet everybody is drawn to the one the keeps getting all the mediocre/negative comments? It just seems very weird when there are so many other promoted AU/NZ films to choose from. But I do note that the Bonus Challenge itself is not very popular this month in the first place.

Some interesting facts there. I would have thought that 2007 would be one of the most-watched years, but it may be by this time next week. ;) Oh, and I have Dirty Ho lined up to watch from 1979 (no, I don't think that it is meant to be as dirty as that sounds) so I'll see if I can crack that one on its head before next week. What about second most recent year with zero watches?

2007 is at 10 watches... so let's see what you do. And after 1979, we have to go back to the 30s to find unwatched years...

1920s: 1926, 1925, 1924, 1922, 1921*

That's weird... but then maybe you're judging number of watches differently to the way that I would. Does 10 mean ten individual films or ten watches for any film? Because if it's ten watches for any film, it means that only one 2007 film has been watched in total. :whistling:

I'll see what I can do about cracking those other years, though I don't have anything from them immediately lined up...

Well, this is absolutely depressing. I just took a look at the film's iCM page and zzzorf has also watched it and marked it as a dislike. I would have never dreamed that de Heer's silent film homage would receive such a lukewarm/negative reception from a film-loving community. You're not alone, allison - nobody else who has watched it this month has had much good to say about it. Oh, well. As I said to OldAle, I hope this doesn't put you off watching the other films that I have promoted for the DTC Challenge, especially given that most of them are Challenge Doubles this month.
Sorry that you expected a better reception. Some things about it were unexpectedly pleasant. I felt the film had lots of good ideas. It would have been more like a 6.2/10 from me, but I didn't want to get crazy with the decimals. Anyway, I felt like some of the DTC noms that I watched were a waste of time, but I didn't feel that way about this one.

Spoiler tag of the week
One of my favorite part of hosting challenges is reading the captions people put on the spoiler tags. This week's winner is albajos for "Following Munchausen in his flight" because it's an allusion that's vexing me and I feel like I should know, but must concede victory to albajos. Congrats!

Malic White is excellent as an androgynous lesbian love interest here, offering a very naturalistic performance while contending with being mistaken for a boy due to her mohawk haircut and baggy clothes. The rest of the film though impressed me far less. I expected more of the intriguing 911 call opening and while her aunt's friends are an interesting bunch full of middle aged and elderly gay men and lesbians, they never factor that much into the tale. White is also pretty much absent during the dialogue-heavy first 30 minutes here, but she's electric whenever on screen.

Interesting - I had nearly an opposite reaction when I saw it for the ICMff. A very good friend of mine in college went from "guy" to "androgynous lesbian" for dating partners. I felt like I had been there, and that the feelings were spot on with what I remember. I agree with your positive sentiments, but liked the rest of it more than you.

Huh, that's interesting - and not just for your real life experiences, but the fact that the film was in the ICMFF. This is the second film in 48 hours that I have been surprised to learn was part of the festival. I really haven't been following the FF too closely since migrating from IMDb.

35. Small Roads (2011)

Image

Those who have seen 13 Lakes or Ten Skies will know what to expect here, but this James Benning project is actually slightly more playful. Sound is an important factor here as Benning toys around with our expectations of what sort of vehicle will enter the frame and from which direction, and sometimes it is something else (like a train) that we have been hearing. The deserted nature of many of the roads are intriguing too as Benning captures them at odds to the natural surrounds - adjustments to the environment that may seldom be used.

3. Die 3 Groschen-Oper (Ger 31) - Rewatch (sort of)

I thought I'd posted this a couple of days ago but I can't find it. I've long loved 3. Die 3 Groschen-Oper - had LBs of both the German and the 1950s Broadway version (Blitzstein translation) and pretty much knew both sets of songs by heart at one time.

Anyway, I saw the unrestored version of this on VHS - terrible print, terrible sound, and I have a feeling it was shorter than the restored Criterion version I watched a couple of nights ago. I remember being confused and frustrated because there were so few songs and the plot didn't make sense.

The restoration is beautiful, and once I decided to let it be itself I enjoyed it thoroughly. The extra, "Brecht vs. Pabst" (2007) was very helpful.

Tangent (stop reading here if you like):

So last night I watched Mack the Knife (1989) on youtube. Acc to IMDb it's a Netherlands/Hungary production - chiefly British cast except for Raul Julia in the title role. It follows the original plot more closely, more songs (but not all), a fair amount of dancing - Has somewhat the feel of a modern musical, plays around with who sings what -- maybe no masterpiece but lots of fun. The translation appears to be revised Blitzstein (there are later ones which I have only a nodding acquaintance with). Here begins the REAL tangent:

rant about translationsShow
The translator in me has always found the Blitzstein translation brilliant - I learned a lot from it. Sure, it's bowdlerized, had to be for the times. But. Take the refrain to Die Kanonen Song:

Soldaten wohnen
Auf den Kanonen
Vom Cap bis Couch Behar.
Wenn es mal regnete
Und es begegnete
Ihnen 'ne neue Rasse'ne braune oder blasse
Da machen sie vielleicht daraus ihr Beefsteak Tartar.

(Literal translation from internet:

Soldiers live,
On the cannons,
From the Cape to Cutch Behar,
And as it rained hard,
If they encountered,
New races,
Whether brown or pale,
Maybe they can make them into beefsteak tatar!)

Blitzstein (1954):

Let’s all go barmy, live off the Army
See the world we never saw
If we get feeling down we wander into town
And if the population should greet us with indignation
We chop 'en to bits because we like our hamburgers raw!

Revised (Mack the Knife, 1989):

Let’s all go barmy, live off the army.
We’ll march from cape to pole
We’ll meet that darker race, we’ll fight them them face to face
‘Cause clearly we are better, we kill them, it doesn’t matter
we’ll chop them up and make of them our beefsteak tartare.

Translation generally involves a tug-of-war between letter and spirit. Of course the 1954 translation soft-pedals the racist theme; but to my mind captures the spirit beautifully - for an American audience, that is. The 1989 revision, on the other hand, magnifies the racist theme out of proportion. Also, beefsteak tartare is not an American thing, and for me the last line completely loses its punch. But this was made for British audiences, so -- ? anyway, the poet in me finds the revision sorely lacking.

PS. I plan to watch The Beggar's Opera (UK 1953) with Laurence Olivier soon. I saw the previews in the theater way back when but had no interest at the time.
