What were your thoughts on that? I thought it was hilarious when I first watched it ~20 years ago, but sad when I watched it a few days ago...

15. Make Way for Tomorrow (1937)
The disclaimers on this were absurd and distracting - possibly necessary at the time, but eye-roll-inducing now. Otherwise, I thought it was a fine and well-constructed film, but not something that spoke to me in any sort of way.
17. With Byrd at the South Pole (1930)
This was kinda fun - it's a documentary about a scientific exploration to Antarctica, which included the first fly-over of the South Pole. Some great scenery (hence the Oscar Cinematography win) and a nice story about what life was like then. A fun watch.
18. The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum (1939)
This is a film I appreciated a lot more than enjoyed. It was cool to see early Mizoguchi and how a lot of the shots were constructed, but plot and characters fell flat for me.
28. Hitlerjunge Quex (1933)
Say what you want but it does work as a propaganda piece. Poor hungry young people find their savior in a young political figure and soon realise that communism is bad mmmkay and Hitlerjugend is super, thanks for asking.

18. Leise flehen meine Lieder / Lover Divine (1933, Willi Forst)
This relatively understated Shubert biography, filled with light charm and just a touch of humour and sentimentality is believe it or not Willi Forst's first film. It is well shot, occasionally stunning (the field scenes are spectacular). I never quite cared for Forst's dramas, but this has a very different air to it, and feels more vibrant. Sadly, the romance that takes up the majority of the screentime is lacking the passion to truly sell it, and while a strong and competent debut it also just feels like this is all it is - incredible to think Forst would make his greatest film, Maskerade, the very next year. 6.5-7/10.
19. Dezertir (1933, Vsevolod Pudovkin)
I had relatively low expectations for Dezertir as Pudovkin is part of a select group of the highly respected directors I have never seen a single great film from. Just like Dovzhenko he simply comes of as too much of a true believer, making stale and obvious propaganda films - well made, of course, but dead on arrival. However, Dovzhenko made one film, so mad, so creative, so exceptionally cut, that I could not help but love it - Arsenal. For a long time I though Dezertir would be Pudovkin's Arsenal. Then an hour in, it goes into absurdly awkward propaganda territory - and even so, I still could not unsee the first hour (and the ending is actually quite wonderful as well).
What is so fantastic with Dezerir is the atmosphere, editing and shockingly, the use of sound. It kept my heart beating, pulled in by every noise. Pudovkin made the brilliant choice to not made a realistic talkie, but shoot long scenes as if we were watching a silent - only using sound when needed - and what sound: Industrial choices, yells, clangs, feet - it is both loud and unsettling. Dialog is often sparse, and some of the scenes are editing as if we were watching an experimental masterpiece. It is emotional, large and beautifully composed, covering a violent strike with fantastic compusure. Workers vs. police, workers vs. workers, and the environment around them: Incredible! I want spoil what brought the movie down from being a near masterpiece, to a merely great film - perhaps you will not mind as much. 8(maybe even 8.5)/10.

20. Vecchia guardia / Old Guard (1934, Alessandro Blasetti)
Yeah ... it does not seem Blasetti's heart was in this very lazy Fascist propaganda piece (though the target group seemed to have enjoyed it as it opens with a German introduction, showcasing why it was exported). The point is simple, show the "old guard" open up to Fascist ideas as the Marxist menace grows. Sadly, the plot is a blob of characters and interactions - somewhat fitting as the Marxists are just a mob, but outside of the idolized child (who we are told in the beginning will die) the focus is all over the place, without vignettes or anything to truly tie it together. The acting is lazy, the direction is lazy (none of thew typical beautiful shots Blasetti is known for) and it becomes a bit of a moderately passable bore before everyone marches on to the glory of Il Duce. 4/10.
21. Arm wie eine Kirchenmaus / Poor as a Church Mouse (1931, Richard Oswald)
The opening is quite creative, replacing the opening credit with two of the actors bickering over roles and going over who plays who, and who does what - Richard Oswald got mentioned 3 or 4 times I believe. Oswald can be utterly genius (Lucrezia Borgia, Der Hauptmann von Köpenick) but a lot of his work is simply good enough, and this sadly falls into the latter category. While thoroughly enjoyable, this could easily have been just another passable Hollywood comedy, the one thing setting it apart are the 2 random musical numbers (oh Germany). Quite simply, a poor woman manages to convince the director of a bank that she is a hard worker, becomes his secretary (essentially right away) and they seem to develop some feelings for each other - jokes concern how hard working both are, and a few slapstick side-characters. Again, perfectly enjoyable, but it does not do anything that sets it apart from the crowd. 6.5/10.

This Laurel and Hardy comedy does not quite milk the 'double trouble' premise for all that it is worth with over half an hour elapsing before the first mistaken identity mix-up. Once things warm up though, the film rarely lets up with hilarious moments involving cement, an easily irate bartender and a high class party that Laurel and Hardy infiltrate and cause to come crashing down Marx Brothers style. The film may have been funnier though were it is easy to tell which twin is which (this is especially confusing when they all inadvertently meet at the party).

10. 'No Lady' / 1931, Lupino Lane / 6.5/10 / UK

From bucolic countryside existences torn asunder by the lusting of a warlord's nephew to stark vengeance pursued in the shadow of a volcano overlooking dens of gambling and drinking, Sun Yu's film is both visually fascinating and psychologically compelling. The intensity that it builds to is remarkable.

Unfortunately, the awards I got for seeing this were the highlight. There were some great quips and one-liners that made me chuckle, but on the whole, I found this relatively dull and uninteresting. I'm not a fan of the "we're unable to talk to each other as adults - queue problems that could be prevented with a five minute conversation" plot lines. I'm also beginning to think I'm not a huge fan of Cary Grant.

I knew what to expect--I knew they would portray pot users as crazy--so that didn't surprise me. I liked the educational feel of it--I like educational films. The print I saw was so poor that I'd like to see it again, because I'm sure my viewing suffered as a result. But I liked the didacticism, and how over the top it was.

22. Sorok serdets / Forty Hearts (1931, Lev Kuleshov)
I went into Forty Hearts entirely cold and I was immediately blown away by spectacular and emotional editing as we saw workers accompanied by the title card(s) "this is a person". Imagine my disappointment when I realized this was a documentary/propaganda piece about the greatness of electricity/power ... And even so, Kuleshov did beautiful work - combining simple, but visual and fun animation, miniatures and real footage into an incredibly engaging and clever work. It was especially nice to finally see Kuleshov do "Soviet montage", I truly hope he has more sleepers like this (and perhaps with better topics) - but when it comes to teaching people about electricity he really pulls no stop, and managed to turn what could have been incredibly mundane into a great experience. 8(maybe 8.5)/10.
23. Gueule d'amour / Lady Killer (1937, Jean Grémillon)
Quite well directed, solid enough story, but it felt a little vacant. 6.5-7/10

Oh, and remember that Forty Hearts is just 50 minutes and available on youtube with English subtitles.
